Blurb:   In less than a summer, shy and introverted Robbie Myers goes from eighteen and never been kissed to the passionate intensity of first love that could last forever. Literally…

Eighteen-year-old Robbie Myers has difficulty talking to people. Not only is he shy, but he seems to say the wrong thing every time he opens his mouth, especially to the mysterious, handsome stranger who shows up at his supermarket job, defends him from an aggressive colleague and then asks him on a date. He can’t believe a hot, worldly badboy like seventeen-year-old Colt Abernathy is actually interested. Yet he can’t deny that the ardor burning in Colt’s dark eyes is just for him. In the space of one breath, Robbie is launched from his plan to attend community college while living at home with his mom and saving up for a car to the tender yet passionate exploration of intense first love. Little does Robbie know…

Brought across during the height of the Civil War, Colt has remained trapped in the body of a lonely seventeen year old. When he spots the slim, blond-haired, blue-eyed young man, pushing a line of shopping carts across a parking lot, Colt knows instantly they’re destined for each other. There’s just one major problem: if he survives the impending battle between vampires and the Matarians – an army of brutal vampire slayers – he’s going to live forever. Robbie isn’t…

Review:  I absolutely loved this novel! Forever Young stars Robbie and Colt. Now, Robbie is very hardworking and sweet kid. He lives with his mom and works at a local grocery store in Boyne City, Michigan. He’s living a normal and boring life, but everything changes when he meets Colt. Why? Because Colt is a hundred and sixty-seven year old vampire.

I loved Robbie’s innocence and shyness. That made him appear weak, but I found him to be a fighter and believer. Colt, on the other hand, was freaking sexy and mysterious. He was a gentleman trapped inside a seventeen-year-old’s body. I loved Jeff Erno’s version of a vampire novel. Twilight had completely destroyed it for me and Mr. Erno made me love vampires once again. This book is filled with several intriguing characters that I found myself wanting to know more of. I really hope that Mr. Erno pens a part two for this amazing and intriguing novel.

I recommend this novel to anyone who loves supernatural novels, a good young love story fill with mystery. Trust me; you won’t regret sitting down and reading this fresh work of fiction.

Blurb: Turner Michaels is an idealistic junior enlisted communicator that wants nothing more than to successfully execute his duties. After being transferred to a light armored reconnaissance unit in the middle of the Mojave Desert, the young U.S. Marine starts to feel a bit overwhelmed and out of place from his usual role of support – that is until he is reunited with his old friend Jace Sozio. Reconnecting with one another is simple, but neither of them could have imagined the intense yet awkward attraction that would grow between them. Though admitting these feelings to one another poses a dilemma for the men, as neither wants it to threaten their close friendship. Taking things to a whole new level raises a number of other questions as well. First and foremost, would their peers accept them, or would they have to forever hide their relationship? And admitting their true feelings for one another is easier said than done. Their harsh supervisor is demanding and makes life miserable for the pair, and they also have a number of very good (though sometimes annoying) friends that make them question if they even need enemies. But with the help of their family and inspiring leaders, the two will discover that loyalty and support are stronger than bigotry and misperception. Proving that the Corps indeed is a sacred brotherhood where men can trust one another with their very lives.

Review: This is an enduring friends to lovers story that is layered with all the pressures of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell on the conflicted lover’s shoulders. Most of the story occurs during non-combat training in various bases in the U.S. Pressure builds as Turner and Jace each keep secret their attraction for each other, even though Turner has come out to his barracks mate, keeping secrets like this has an ill effect on his performance. Jace’s strange behavior starts raising red flags with another long time friend and bunkmate until the final confrontation explodes into full fury and threats of dishonorable discharge. The details of the barracks, the bases, and surrounding landscape are so descriptive I can’t help but believe the author spent some time serving or working on the bases. This is an HEA, but the struggles to get there kept me glued to the pages throughout.

Blurb: Ryunoski “Ru” Nakimura knows all about the trappings of fame. Expelled from a boy band for coming out as gay, he still wants to continue his career in music. Too bad his ex finds nothing better to do than exploit their relationship in the press, so Ru leaves California behind to lie low in Minnesota for a while.

Adam Corbin attends a Minnesota high school and wants to coast through as a typical student. He’s friends with an openly gay student, Bas Axelrod, but while Adam plays football, he also stays away from much socializing. Blending in and not outing himself has been easy because he’s never really been seriously interested in any of the guys he’s encountered.

When Adam meets Ru in a library, Adam begins to think he’s found that special young man who might make it worthwhile to just be himself. And for Ru, Adam looks like someone he might trade his fame for, if they could be together. Ru and Adam will both come to realize that courage and love must go hand in hand if they are to have a future.

Review: Ru is seventeen and already knows the pitfalls of fame. As a member of a boy band, he was dumped by his band and his record company when his then lover outed him. Ru is in Minnesota to lay low, while he writes songs for his solo career and comes across a beautiful young man in a library. A young man who doesn’t know who he is and makes him feel like the teenager he really is. Adam is sixteen and is perfectly happy to keep his head down and coast through school. when he meets a gorgeous young man in the library, he is both scared and excited and finally seizes the chance to be his true self with another person. Both young men come to realize, that to be together they need courage and love.

This story is amazing. It isn’t the usual rock-star story, but a story of two teenagers who have grown up in different surroundings and finding a youthful love. Ru has been through some difficult times, since he was outed. Hounded by the media, his ex living off the fame, and the only friend he really has is Tommy his ex-band mate. When he meets Adam, he falls for the wonderful boy and tries to spend as much time getting to know him as he can. At the same time, keeping hidden his fame. Adam knows the truth of being gay where he lives, he has seen his friend Bas badly beaten after he came out and Adam is scared to death of the same thing happening to him, if anyone found out. Meeting Ru has him being himself, he discovers more confidence in himself, and when he is outed himself, he confronts his bullies head on.

I was so impressed with this story that I re-read it immediately after I finished it. and I still loved every word in it. This story is so much more than just two young men meeting and falling in love. it’s about the family and support you have and the friends who are true friends. It’s about finding the courage to hold your head up high, in spite of the insults and abuse. And that no matter what your positions in life, bullies are still bullies. We feel drawn to the boys in this story as we get to know them and their fears. we see how they become confident and how they rely on each other for support. The supporting characters are wonderful, with Tommy being the big brother that Ru desperately needs and Bas being an incredible role model and friend to Adam.

There are many things in this story that will tug at your heart. not least of which is Bas’ speech that will hit you in the heart and bring tears to your eyes. The story is wonderfully written. The storyline is interesting and holds your attention. but, it is the characters and what they are going through that makes you love this book. The fear, depression, anger, hope, love, joy, understanding, and confidence are just some of the emotions that Ru and Adam experience and you experience it with them.

I have absolutely no choice but to recommend that everyone read this. And if you know a young gay man or a support group then donate a copy because this story might just give them hope that they are not alone.

Review:  A sweet story about two lonely guys that are searching for happiness.

I started this story in the morning before work and then was frustrated I had to wait the whole working day before I could get my mitts on it again and read, read, read. I haven’t read any of the other books (save one short story) in the Tales from Foster High series, so I’m reviewing this as a stand-alone—, and it is enjoyable without having prior knowledge of the ‘Foster’ world.

Things that worked for me:

  • The Forward & Postscript – I liked the discussion of hope and love and thought it added a nice touch to the story. It gave the whole story a more . . . polished, professional feel to it.
  • The ‘About the Author’ page at the end was creative and clever, and I had a very good chuckle while reading it.
  • The writing itself is good and the author really gets into the characters heads, so we get their thoughts, responses and emotions. This was particularly well done in the first chapters with Matt.
  • The flashbacks of the boy behind the red door really drew me in to the story and set up the romantic tension.
  •  I really enjoyed how stylistic the author was with the narrative. Some chapters are told from the perspective of other characters in the book, and it fit, because it emphasized the need Matt and Tyler had for space. At that point, they were both so upset, they just couldn’t go on. Very clever writing device.

Thing that didn’t work for me:

The biggest issue for me was that the pacing of the story felt off.

It has a great initial lead in, but as soon as Matt and Tyler meet at Christmas, the splendid pacing hits a snag as the two guys fall for each other immediately without much conflict. The insta-love at this point just didn’t flow well for me. I can understand that both the men are lonely, and maybe that would make them quick to jump into something, but as a reader, I love to have the emotional/and or physical connection drawn out a bit more.

As well as the two getting together too quickly, they suddenly fall apart after a week, and the reasons didn’t feel very mature (especially for characters that are in their thirties). The guys seemed super sensitive, and I never really got what Tyler did that was so wrong that he had to put up with so much crap from Matt and his awful fag-hag toward the end of the book. So he freaked out? Good, I say. It shows some human emotion—this needed to be worked through and not run away from.

I guess from the moment the main characters kiss, the books speeds toward an end with so much happening too quickly. But, to be fair, the blurb does tell the reader what to expect.

It feels like maybe I’m placing a lot of emphasis on what didn’t work for me in this story, but I guess I feel passionate about it because the writing was awesome, and I was/am greedy and just wanted more.

I enjoyed the read and am certainly interested in the other stories set in Foster. Definitely an author to try again!!!

Blurb:   High school can be some of the best years of life-and some of the toughest. Mark Mitchell’s strategy for surviving is to emulate the mighty turtle: pull back inside his protective shell and keep a low profile to avoid trouble. And it works-nobody bothers him. Of course, nobody really knows him, either, even in a town so small it seems like everybody must know everyone else.

Mark certainly knows Bill Cromwell, whom he meets officially when his father volunteers him for manual labor at the school. Bill is his polar opposite: outgoing, gregarious, athletic. But when a massive snowstorm traps the two boys together for three days, Mark learns that being popular doesn’t mean you can’t be bullied or abused-or gay-and that bullying doesn’t stop at the school doors.

Mark isn’t naive. He’s seen the news reports of gay teen suicides, and he’s determined not to become a statistic. But it’s not himself he’s worried about.

Review: I loved the plot of this novel, but there were a few things that did not sit well with me. The story stars Mark Mitchell and Bill Cromwell. Mark is an outcast in his high school since he pulls back and tries to fly under the radar and that actually works for him. No one knows who he is or if he even exists. Bill Cromwell is the opposite of Mark. He’s popular, outgoing, athletic, and handsome. What do they have in common? They are both gay teens with unique families. When the two meet one day, there is an instant connection between them. Soon, they become good friends and then lovers.

Mark was a really amazing character just like Bill. The story is solid and there are few twists that I liked. For example, Bill is the one being abused at home by his alcoholic father. The only thing that blew me off was the way the story was written. There were a few times when Mark sounded like a teenager and in others were he sounded like a forty-year-old man. There wasn’t a constant narrative voice throughout the novel. There were a few scenarios that sounded unreal, but this is YA Fiction so that is fine by me. Besides that, I really loved the plot and characters.

I recommend this novel to anyone who loves YA novels with special little twists that will keep you wanting more.

Review: This book is part of a series and must be read in order. Chris and Josh share a dance at the prom but come up against abuse from people Chris thought were friends, Chris is disheartened by their reactions and becomes wary. Graduating high school should be one of the proudest moments of his life but the bullies make it a day of humiliation and Chris begins to wonder if the love he has for his boyfriend Josh is worth all the abuse and humiliation. Josh and Chris’ parents decide to show him that not everyone is bigoted and small-minded by arranging a weekend away at his first gay pride, but Chris doesn’t want to go until Josh sweet talks him.

This is an absolutely sweet and touching coming of age story that has angst, fear, anger, kindling hope and determination. In Dear Diary we are told the story of Chris and everything that had come about until the moment he was getting ready for his high school prom, in this story it picks up on the way to the prom continuing Chris’ and Josh’s story. Chris is cautious when he first gets to the prom, even though he knows that Josh is disappointed but he takes a chance and asks Josh to dance and it ends badly. Chris has to face up to the fact that some of his friends are now foes even though he doesn’t want to believe it, but the message is sent home further when he is cornered in the school bathroom. Josh tries to give Chris something to look forward to but to also give him perspective of the world around him with a trip to gay pride.

This isn’t a cutesy, rainbows dancing, love fest it’s a realistic coming of age, coming out story warts and all. Chris is faced with hate and anger from those he called friend, and he begins to wonder if being gay is worth the hassle. It is only because of the love and support of his family and friends that he gets through Graduation, but even that is tainted by humiliation. Josh is a super supportive boyfriend that sticks it through the tough times and gives Chris the love he rightly deserves; he also knows that seeing gay pride just might be what Chris needs.

There is a huge gamut of emotions that you feel as you read this book and we are made to see the fear, loss and anger that a young man faces when friends turn to foes. We see the effect it has on his confidence and emotions as he tries to work out why they are so prejudice and bigoted. We see the incredible support he gets from those that truly love him and the love he has for one special man. Josh and Chris’ relationship couldn’t have gone through a harder time, but their love for each other shines through and smashes the doubts. They are sweet together and their lovemaking is wonderful.

I recommend this to those who want a hard-hitting coming out story, who want a young love that’s built from stone, that want realistic problems being faced and our young couple facing the fire and coming through stronger together.

Blurb: It’s not easy for a young gay artist like Jordan Carson to grow up in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where all anyone seems to care about in middle school and high school are the sports teams. But Jordan was lucky. He met Owen Nelson in the second grade, and they’ve been BFFs ever since. Owen is a big, beautiful blond and their school’s champion wrestler. No one messes with Owen, or with anyone close to him, and he bucks popular opinion by keeping Jordan as his wingman even after Jordan comes out at school.

Their friendship survives, but Jordan’s worst enemy may be himself: he can’t seem to help the fact that he is head-over-heels in love with a hopeless case—his straight friend, Owen. Owen won’t let anything take Jordan’s friendship away, but he never counted on Jordan running off to find a life of his own. Review:  Jordan is a young gay man; actually, when the story begins he is in Junior high or younger. He has two loves in his   life. One: drawing and creating comics. Two: Owen Nelson, the star wrestler and his best friend since he was seven.

Owen has had two things in life that he couldn’t live without one wrestling the other his best friend Jordy. The only problem is Joey is gay and he isn’t. This is such a sweet story of two best friends that truly love each other. They have been inseparable since they were seven. It’s also a story of denial, but a feeling so strong that nothing can put a wedge between them. It’s rare to read a story of youth with such convictions and no drugs, alcohol or anything with clear heads on their shoulders and such strong feelings. All we ever hear is the stereotypical bad stuff when there are kids that are actually good, and confused. It’s sweet, pure, clean, funny, and very sensual. I highly recommended this to any true romance lover.

Recommendations: if you like young adult, clean, sweet, yet sensual stories, varsity wrestling, comics, super heroes, and fulfilling endings this is for you.

Blurb:  All sixteen-year-old Alex Nevus wants is to be two years older and become his sister Alice’s legal guardian. Strapped with a mentally ill mother, Alex fears for his own sanity. Having a fairy on his shoulder only he can see doesn’t help, and his mom’s schizophrenia places him and Alice in constant jeopardy of being carted back into foster care.

There he finds his mother held captive by the power-mad Queen May and learns he is half-human and half-fey—a Haffling.

As Alex’s human world is being destroyed, the Unsee is being devoured by a ravenous mist. Fey is vanishing, and May needs to cross into the human world. She needs something only Alex can provide, and she will stop at nothing to possess it… to possess him.

Reviewer:   Pammie

Review:  A YA fantasy tale, first in the Haffling series.

I found this book quite hard going, although by the end I was rooting hard out for Alex and Jerod. The fey here are far from friendly. The world is complex, and interwoven with fairy tales we all know. Given it’s YA, some of the things that didn’t appeal to me, like the TV setting used, may appeal to a different audience. Alex and Jerod make a good team, and I really hope they ultimately have a HEA. May is a thoroughly nasty piece of work, instead of trying to save her own world, she seeks to enter the human world, and rule there, using Alex as her bridge. The power struggle to free Alex from her domination was edge-of-seat stuff.

If you like fantasy, twists on familiar fairy tales, series, YA, and a HFN, this is for you.

Review:  This story is part of a series and is best-enjoyed if read in order. This book picks up right where Choices, book one, left off. This is not a series where you can just jump in, I strongly suggest that you read the first book before you read this book or you won’t understand the characters and see the beauty of their relationship prior to reading where they are right now.

Brian has left his home and traveled to San Diego to find Jamie. What each of them find in California is so vastly different, and yet, shockingly similar. Brian found a boarding house full of other young gay men. He got a job and made friends, he’s safe. The only thing missing is Jamie. When he’s lain off, he refuses to admit his failure and go back home, not to mention he still hasn’t found Jamie. A friend in the house suggests gay porn as an easy way to make money. Reluctant at first, Brian finally gives in and applies for the job. The last thing he expected to find on a porn set was the first thing he came to California for, Jamie.

Jamie wasn’t quite as lucky as Brian was when he escaped the gay rehab center his mother condemned him to. The first person he meets and becomes friends with is brutally murdered, and in his grief, Jamie lands right in the hands of a sadistic sexual predator. Steven is emotionally and physically abusive in addition to getting Jamie addicted to drugs and making him do porn to pay his drug debt. He tells Jamie he loves him and he will keep him safe, but his love and safety come with a very high price, one Jamie might not survive.

I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I LOVE the love story of Brian and Jamie! I love Mayfield’s style of writing and the way he conveys the emotional and physical connection these two share with the reader. They actually make love on a porn shoot, surrounded by people and cameras, and Mayfield maintains the connection that is just them. I HATE the abuse Jamie has to endure! First from the one person that is supposed to love him regardless, unconditionally, his own mother. Then at the gay rehab center by delusional morons, and finally from Steven.

To spite the heavy seriousness of this series, Mayfield has my attention. I am emotionally invested in these characters and their journey. He is just that good. I cannot wait for the final installment to this trilogy and I highly recommend these books. Again, they are intense and graphic, but you can feel the love there as well. Mayfield shows both sides of the coin that is being gay and either accepted or denied by the people you love and trust. Brian’s adopted parents love him completely and there is nothing he could do to change that. Even Porn, they express their disappointment but adamantly maintain their unconditional love. Jamie’s parents dumped him off at a gay rehab center like an unwanted animal at the pound. It’s heartbreaking.

Just a reminder, read book 1, Choices, first if you haven’t yet and I promise you’ll be hooked with Brian, Jamie, their story, their struggle to just be together, and the obstacles they face along the way. (http://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=3878)

Review: Al Skelton has always been fascinated by raising the dead so he is excited to get his very own copy of Necromancy and You (From A – Zombie) that he sent away for in the back of a magazine and he can finally try to really raise the dead. Al discovers that things have been hidden from him when he actually makes a frog or two rise from the dead and… well, maybe a few bird skeletons. As Al delves into a world of ghosts, vampires, and ghouls and learns to avoid the Coalition, he discovers who he can trust and just what happened to his father.

This is a great young adult adventure that while isn’t strictly GLBT it does have Duncan and Lucas from Vampirism and You for a large part of the storyline. Al has a secret longing, to bring his father back from the dead, Al sends off for a necromancy book in the back of a magazine and he is drawn into a world he never knew existed and makes allies and enemies along the way. The Coalition want Al but Al has been warned about them, dodging them is harder than Al thought and he briefly ends up in their hands. Running from a disgusting organization, Al discovers that he has limited choices, but he also finds he has powerful allies.

This is a great fun story that has slashes of danger, some loss, startling discoveries, and a kindling of love. Al is a brilliant character who is like a typical depressed teenager, he is obsessed with raising the dead, but as Al discovers he can really do it. With the help of his trusty Guidebook and his undead frog familiar, he begins to explore the necromancy world and soon discovers just why he has been warned away from the Coalition by a vampire. Al’s journey is filled with danger and secrets but he soon learns who he can trust. We see quite a bit of Duncan and Lucas and we also find a remorseful ghost, Al has his very first crush on a young female necromancer and he has to face a deadly foe.

I will recommend this to those that love young adult stories that has just a touch of GLBT, great characters, a brilliant storyline, angsty teenagers, danger, lots of dead things and a happy for now ending.

Blurb: Every high school has its social elite; the football players and cheerleaders … you know the popular crowd. At Butler High, Jack Barely was as close to the top as they came. Captain of the swim team, great hair, and abs that most would die for. However, that was all before the Leeches attacked, taking away everything: his popularity, his house, his grandmother, and even his best friend, Caleo, whom he secretly loved.

Now, living in a destroyed world, popularity means nothing as Jack struggles just to keep him and his twin sister, Jillian, alive. With attacks happening more frequently, Jack starts to wonder why they are even bothering to try to hold onto the past when it just reminds him of all they have lost. Just when he has given up hope, Jack hears a rumor that Caleo is still alive and sets out on a mission to find him. But will Jack make it to finally tell Caleo how he really feels?

Review: This story is part of a series and must be read in order. Jack was the swim team captain at school before everything fell apart, now he is just trying to survive with his sister, Jillian, after losing Caleo, his grandmother, his house and well just about everything. Dealing with attacks is hard, discovering Caleo might be alive drives him to try to find him, but danger lurks everywhere and rescuing Caleo is much harder than he thought, but getting Caleo back is all he can think of.

This story picks up three months after the end of Caleo and is Jack’s story. Jack is still reeling over the loss of Caleo, he never got the chance to tell Caleo how he really felt about him and now he never will. But, when Jack is visited by Caleo’s ghost and is convinced to return to their old high school, it leads to a discovery that has Jack determined to find Caleo and tell him how he really feels. Jack has quite the adventure in this story, rescuing captured humans and dealing with Leeches and he also has to deal with his own jealousy and getting through to Caleo.

I really enjoyed this story and having it from Jack’s POV, seeing his grief and regrets and then his joy and confidence, his jealousy and his strength showed how much of a well-rounded character he was. The storyline is again action pack with danger and angst, it also has loss and anger as well as hope. Nolan returns and we also see Steve again and we finally get to meet Alix, and discover just how twisted some of the Leeches have become. With this story we see how humans come together to survive the hardships thrown at them, crawling out of the ashes to rebuild. I won’t delve further into the book, but if you read Caleo, then you won’t want to miss this book.

I have to recommend this if you love Young Adult stories, paranormal, danger, angst, young love, humor, capture, escapes, death, and anger. And, with an ending that leaves us panting for the next book Nolan.

Blurb:   In Viking Age Iceland, where boys are expected to grow into strong farmers and skilled warriors, there is little place for a sickly twelve-year-old boy like Kol until he catches the eye of a seið-woman—a sorceress—and becomes her apprentice. Kol travels to the sorceress’s home, where her grandson, Thorbrand, takes Kol under his wing. Before long Kol discovers something else about himself that is different—something else that sets him apart as unmanly: Kol has fallen in love with another boy.

But the world is changing in ways that threaten those who practice the ancient arts. As Kol’s new life takes him across the Norse lands, he finds that a new religion is sweeping through them, and King Olaf Tryggvason is hunting down and executing sorcerers. When a decades-old feud forces Thorbrand to choose between Kol and his duty to his kinsman, Kol finds himself cast adrift with only the cryptic messages of an ancient goddess to guide him to his destiny—and possibly to his death.

Review:

I have to admit that when I saw this novel and read the name, I thought I was in for a very boring book. But, after reading the first pages, I knew I had made a big mistake: I judged a book by its cover.

Seidman stars Kol. Now, Kol is a little farm boy who never seemed to fit in with his family. His dad found him weak and his brother hated him for being weak. But one day, he meets Alfdis, a powerful sorceress, and his life completely changes.

I don’t want to give the story away, but this novel takes place during the Viking Age. So you might find the names of several persons, places, and things a little bit confusing. What I loved about this novel was the paranormal element in it. I found the goddesses, gods, and spirits fascinating and thrilling.

I absolutely loved Kol. He was like the Viking Harry Potter of his era. He was very shy, but incredibly brave. Even when death was staring him in the face he stood stall and strong. I loved Thorbrand. There was something in him that I loved. Maybe, it was the way he was so overprotective of Kol. He won my heart completely and the ending was very thrilling and exciting, especially, the final battle.

I recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for a very entertaining and historical book depicting young love, magic, and adventure. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Review:  I liked Banned Books. It was a very entertaining read and you learn a lot about books in this short little novel. Now, Banned Books stars Anthony Parker, a normal gay kid who is attending an exclusive British boarding school for boys. Everything in his life is normal and boring until he is caught reading a very controversial book by Miss Lowry.

I liked Anthony. He was smart, young, and naive. He is in love with his straight best friend, Rafe, who loves him like a little brother. I loved their relationship and Rafe is a really nice guy. I liked Fritz. He was unique and a rebel with a cause. He hated how society works and following its rules.

The one thing that turned me off about this novel was the ending. It was so vague and you don’t really know if Anthony got his happy ending after all. I recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a short story about a group of friends who rebel against society and follow their own rules.

Review:  I have to be honest. I really wanted to like this novel, but a huge part of me, didn’t like it or didn’t connect with the story. Beggars and Choosers stars Brett and Cory. Two very different boys sharing the same problems.

I loved Brett. I found him to be interesting and unique. Brett was a school dropped out and lived alone in a small apartment after his mom kicked him out. She was a very popular prostitute and drug addict. He got a job at a small pub and it was there where he met Cory. I somehow didn’t connect with Cory. He was almost in the same predicament as Brett. He had an alcoholic dad and he had to work to buy his personal belongings. All his father did was play his crappy music and get drunk. I have no idea why I didn’t connect with him like I did with Brett.

This novel was well written and it covers a period of several years of their lives. Now, this is the confusing part of the novel. All throughout the novel, the author kept jumping from one POV to the other. Add that to the fact that the story was written by months and it confused me a little. It made it hard to keep up and sometimes there were huge gaps in the story. I really did not like that. I would have loved that this novel was written in Brett’s POV only. It would have made it easier to read.

I recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a good young adult novel about two very diverse boys as they become one and find the true meaning of love and happiness.

Review:  What an emotional ride this was! Whoa, I absolutely loved this novel. Yes, there were times I wanted to strangle Joey, the main guy, but at the end, he came through.

Okay, this very interesting novel stars Joey. Now, Joey is a very sexually confuse jock who would let his geeky friend, Darwin, blow him from time to time. Joey lived for the game and his dad would bully him to make him better (Yeah, what an asshole!). I hated Joey’s dad more than anything in the word. Joey’s relationship with his dad reminded me so much of One Tree Hill’s Nathan Scott with his father.

I don’t want to give the plot away, but this book was really good. Joey went through a lot in his senior year as he came face to face with his sexual orientation. My heart went out to Darwin. He went through hell for Joey, but at the end, everyone found happiness.

This novel is fascinating and I cannot recommend it enough. Yes, there will be times that you would want to kill Joey and Darwin, but just keep on reading and you will end up loving it as much as I did.

Review:  I really wanted to like this novel. It was well written and thought out. The historical pieces in the novel seemed legit and it showed that the author really did his research; however, this wasn’t my thing.

The Celestials stars Todd Morgan. Now, Todd comes from a very humbled home. He’s very small and people still call him kid even though he’s an adult. Now, Todd wants to find gold in Nevada, but what he finds is the love of his life, a Chinese guy name Lao Jian.

I really liked Todd. He was very determined and outspoken. I loved the fact that he took matters into his own hand and decided to move to Nevada to find gold and a better life for his Ma and Uncle Ed. I also liked Lao Jian. He was sweet, but a part of me didn’t connect with him. There was one character that peek my interest and that was Breandan. He seemed like the perfect guy to take the lead role in the novel, but sadly, he died.

I wanted to like the novel, but after Breandan’s death, I lost interest in it. I liked Todd, but Lao Jian seemed un-relatable to me. What I did like about this novel was the historical parts. The way the Chinese were treated back then was horrible and sickening.

I recommend this novel to anyone who is into old western novels with a very unique young adult couple who would do anything to be together. You may like it. Give it a try.

Blurb:   “Skylar is my name, tragically.”

Sixteen-year-old Skylar is witty, empathetic, sensitive–and mute. Skylar hasn’t uttered a single word since his mother died eleven years ago, a senseless tragedy he’s grateful he doesn’t have to talk about.

When Skylar’s father mysteriously vanishes one summer afternoon, Skylar is placed in the temporary custody of his only remaining relative, an estranged grandmother living on an Indian reservation in the middle of arid Arizona.

Adapting to a brand new culture is the least of Skylar’s qualms. Because Skylar’s mother did not die a peaceful death. Skylar’s mother was murdered eleven years ago on the Nettlebush Reserve. And her murderer left behind a son.

And he is like nothing Skylar has ever known.

Review:  Gives Light is a very touching story. This novel stars Skyler St. Clair, a half Native American boy who lost his mom when he was six. His mom was murdered at their home and he was attacked by her attacker that slit his throat, rendering him mute. I really liked this story, but it just wasn’t for me.

After Sky father’s disappears one day, he goes to the police and he’s put under the protection of his grandmother at a Native American Reserve. Skyler and his dad left the reserve many years ago after the murder of his mother. It is there where he meets Rafael, the son of his mom’s murderer and that’s where the story takes off.

I really liked this novel. I just don’t know why it didn’t appeal to me. The story was well written and planned out. It instantly pulls you into a very rich and cultural world. My respect goes to the Native Americans in the USA. Their culture is rich and very inspirational. Sadly, this novel was not for me. I did appreciate the culture portrayed in this novel though. It was really sweet and a learning experience.

I recommend this novel to anyone who wants to read a very detailed and cultural novel about friendship, love, family, and forgiveness.

Blurb:   It is 1978 in the Twin Cities, and Kevin Doyle, a high school senior, is a marginal student in love with keggers, rock and roll, and–unbeknownst to anyone else–a boy in his class with thick eyelashes and a bad attitude. His mother Eileen died two years earlier when her car plunged into the icy waters of the Mississippi River, and since then Kevin’s relationship with his father Patrick has become increasingly distant. As lonely women vie for his father’s attention, Kevin discovers Patrick’s own closely guarded secret: he had planned to abandon his family for another woman. More disturbingly, his mother’s death may well have been a suicide, not an accident.

Complicating the family dynamic is the constant meddling of Kevin’s outspoken Aunt Nora–who will never forgive Patrick for Eileen’s death–along with Patrick’s inability to stay single for very long. His loyalties divided between his father and his aunt, between his internal reality and his public persona, Kevin is forced to accept his gay identity and reevaluate his notions of family, and love as painful truths emerge about both.

Review:  I absolutely loved The Year of Ice. This novel starred Kevin, a secret closet case who was madly in love with Jon, a straight kid. I fell for Kevin instantly. He lost his mom at a very young age in a car accident and he was left under his dad protection. But as his senior year advances, Kevin becomes a young man and he begins to see his father under a new light.

Kevin, to me, was the bomb. He was the Alpha of his group and loved bossing Jon around just to have him close. In other words, he was simply trying to attract his attention. I also loved Aunt Nora. Yes, she was a little crazy, but she was real and I really liked her. I HATED Kevin’s dad. Yes, he took care of him, but as the story unfolded, we got to see the trash he truly was. Trust me, I was shocked that he was that kind of person because at first glance, he seemed so nice and the perfect dad. Maybe, he was the reason why I fell for Aunt Nora.

You have to read this novel. Kevin’s life was really interesting and entertaining. The one thing I didn’t like was that there were a few spelling errors and missing punctuations throughout the book. Maybe, that happened when they transformed the novel into an eBook format. Overall, this story is pretty awesome since it tells the story of a father and a son as they discover their paths in life.

Blurb: Ren Mallorian is finally a hero. He helped Celestrian, the lost unicorn, complete his quest and he defeated the kingdom’s worst enemy, Grimthorn. Now Ren lives in the capital city doing odd quests for the king and his nobles—but he misses Celestrian.

One day the king summons Ren and the Prince of Toads, a noble who has taken the role of irreverent sidekick, and tasks them with assembling a team to combat an uprising in the Zombie Kingdom. On their journey across Vrelenden, they gather allies: Discimus, an accomplished wizard and a smug bastard (it’s a good thing he’s pretty). Jaron A-Dale, the captain of a city guard and an accomplished knight. Acorn, a tiny and mysterious elf girl. And an unexpected and extremely dangerous traveling companion.

But is there more to the Zombie threat and its newly raised army of the undead than meets the eye? Ren is having a tough time keeping his head straight, and with Ren and Dish distracted—both by their romance of convenience and the absence of the men they love—this may prove Ren’s most dangerous quest yet.

Review: This book is part of a series and is best read in order. Ren is now the Kingdom’s Hero after his adventure with Celestrian. But, he misses Celestrian desperately, not knowing when he will see his True Love again. When the King summons Ren and the Prince of Toads (Ren’s adopted sidekick) to take up a Quest, they discover some truths about zombies. They leave to gather a Party that will help them to quell the uprising in the Zombie Kingdom. But collecting their Party is going to be hard, as they have side Quests to fulfill before their allies can join them.

Ahhh, God. I just love fantasy adventures that are filled with the familiar and the new, and that has just the right amount of humor to make an enjoyable story. Ren is back and he is the Kingdom’s Hero. Celestrian is never far from his thoughts, but not knowing when they will next be together has Ren seeking comfort, and he knows Celestrian would never begrudge him those brief moments. Setting off on a new Quest to save the Kingdom has Ren and the Prince seeking the best of the best to complete their party; Discimus, a great wizard, Jaron A-Dale, a mighty warrior and Acorn a great healer. They also pick up the unexpected and dangerous ally Setsuo. They face danger and sneak attacks, they have to help with side quests to get the aid they need and there is bickering, falling out and finally they have friendships developing.

I loved this story, although I was a bit wary at first because Ren and Celestrian are separated and a new man comes into Ren’s life. But as the story progresses you come to see that although Ren finds Quest love, no one will ever replace his True Love. and you just know that Celestrian isn’t sitting chastely waiting for Ren. The characters in this story are just brilliant. Ren has developed his Hero skills greatly, and the Prince is as incorrigible as ever with his drinking and women chasing ways. The new characters, Discimus, A-Dale, and Acorn all add something in their own way to this story. Discimus is vain, smug, and self-involved, but you get used to his abrasiveness. A-Dale is a mighty warrior who has a good heart and seeks justice for those who can’t protect themselves. and then we have Acorn, a young elf girl who repeatedly save the Party’s lives… she is sweet and gentle and just wants to be loved after being terrified by her own father.

This is an action-filled story where the hero’s risk their lives constantly. they meet fascinating characters and have some interesting twists with characters from the previous book The Unlikely Hero, both good and bad, popping up. The villages we visit are wonderful, along with the colorful characters that live there. And there are strong hints of admiration for other high fantasy stories. There are some great scenes where it is hard to stifle your laughter. When some of the party are pretending to be Zombie, it’s just brilliant. The story is brilliantly woven, taking us on adventures that are exciting and at times that need tact. They face death and danger, and an old foe and just want are they going to do if the baddies succeed in making a dragon into a zombie?

I will recommend this to those who love high fantasy, young adult, fantastic characters, fleeting love, great adventure, danger and an ending that leaves you wondering what Ren will face next.

Review:  Brian and Jamie have been best friends since they were children. Brian is a foster child that has been in and out of several horrible foster homes until he was placed with the Schrieber’s when he was 11 years old. He and Jamie have been best friends since that day. Over time, friendship has grown into stronger feelings of desire and love, but neither boy has told the other. Until one day in their shared tree house, Jamie throws caution to the wind and kisses Brian.

This isn’t an insta love relationship, these two young men now 17 years old have been falling in love for close to 6 years. Due to their strict religious families, they haven’t shared their feelings for fear of rejection and hatred. When they finally open up and are honest with each other about how they feel, it is beautiful and touching. It’s what comes after that will break your fucking heart!

This was a hard book to read, I must warn you. The story of Brian and Jaime is beautiful, endearing, emotional, and tragic. Mayfield wrote a prolific story of the reality that is growing up gay in a small town with narrow-minded people. I mean, Brian isn’t even safe at school! I have to wonder how much of this book is reality since the author gave a main character his name.

This really is a powerful read that shows what some young gay men have to endure for being who they are. Brian is ostracized for being gay, and not only is he bullied and ultimately critically injured at school by his peers, but the adults gang up on him. I was floored by the reaction and treatment this young man received at the hands of the very people who are supposed to protect him. His foster parents, local martial arts teacher, and a fellow gay teacher are his only allies. When Jamie’s parents find out the truth behind the relationship between them they force Jamie out of Brian’s life and eventually place him in one of those “we cure the gay” programs that I think should all be blown off the map!

There is a positive in this story as well thankfully. Watching Jamie and Brian grow closer in the beginning and ultimately loving each other completely was my favorite part. Mayfield captured the true pain and pleasure of their first sexual encounter flawlessly. After Brian was hurt he was very bitter and withdrawn, rightfully so, but he came through it and learned how to protect himself in the end. I loved the addition of Adam and how he feels the same way about Brian that Brian feels about Jamie. I can’t wait for the next book to see how the trifecta that is Brian, Jamie and Adam plays out.

If you are looking for a fluffy young love story, pass on this one. If you are looking for a reality based love story where heroes’s have to fight not only to be together, but also to be true to themselves, grab it NOW! As hard as it was to read at times, I still loved this book overall and highly recommend.547439_552265354817823_811746604_n
