Now

Whatever happens, no regrets.

Jennifer had only seconds to act. The pounding of footsteps up the stairwell echoed against the walls. This old building had zero insulation. They probably thought they were being quiet, but Jen had good ears and fast hands. Years of experience had her moving before thinking.

One glance at her laptop showed the dual security camera feeds she’d hacked into. Sean hovered above the case of jewels and Maria waited patiently in the getaway car. Jennifer had a second to tab through the rest of the feeds to make sure no police had gotten close to either of them. She entered the kill code to erase the recordings while she still could.

At least they would be safe.

Jennifer touched her fingers to her lips and then the screen, brushing over both Sean and Maria’s faces, imagining the soft feel of the stubble on Sean’s cheeks and the flutter of Maria’s long black eyelashes. She regretted not being able to touch them one more time. Even this warning would have to be abbreviated in case she was overheard.

“I’m about to get busted.” Jennifer never thought she would be the one saying these words. “Get out, now. I’m burning the laptop.” She ripped the headset out of her right ear without waiting for a response. After five years together, she trusted them to listen, still a surprise to her even now to know that she could rely on anyone other than herself. Jennifer slammed the laptop closed and pressed her thumb against the failsafe fingerprint reader she’d installed on the bottom.

She ran out of time. The door behind her cracked under the weight of some asshole cop’s foot as she dropped the laptop onto the floor. At least she hadn’t rented this apartment—she’d never get the deposit back. No, she’d chosen an empty location with good sight lines to the jewelry store and picked the lock on the door.

If this had been a long con, they would have rented an apartment and tried to look like good neighbors. Jennifer had fond memories of jobs where they entrenched themselves, living for months or more in one place until that location felt like home. This job in particular should have been quick, in and out.

Yeah, that turned out well.

The cracked door gave way with a crash, and her once private sanctuary filled with large men in uniform. Jennifer forced down the panic as they surrounded her, black barrels of guns pointed at her. This had happened before, only she hadn’t been the target. “Put your hands in the air!”

Jennifer stood with deliberate caution, keeping her hands in view. Cops would take any excuse to get a shot off, and if she wanted to survive this night, Jen knew she had to play the game. However, the sarcastic little shit inside of her couldn’t resist saying, “Congratulations, you got me.”

Because really? Dozens of armed men for little ole her? Come on.

They didn’t seem impressed, at least no one responded other than to grab her by the shoulders and turn her around to cuff her wrists behind her back. The metal felt familiar on her skin from so much time practicing slipping out of handcuffs. Maybe that skill would come in handy tonight.

More important than slipping her cuffs would be figuring out the man in charge. If she kept her wits about her, Jennifer could think over the pounding of her heart, over the fear that this time she wouldn’t make it out. No, she had to focus. Think. None of these keystone cops were distinguishable from the others. They all wore the same damn blue uniforms with black body armor and helmets. Foot soldiers. She needed a mastermind.

That’s when he walked in. No nondescript body armor for him. He wore a suit, not an expensive one with a label, no, something utilitarian you’d pick up in the mall. Still, she noticed the bulge in the line of his jacket, a clear indication of a weapon. He carried himself like he expected to be obeyed, shoulders back and his jaw clenched. She met his eyes as he stared her down like he cataloged her for evidence, startled by the pale blue of those eyes and the contrast of that with his dark hair.

Funny. In another circumstance she’d consider him hot. Jennifer had always loved the combo of dark hair and light eyes, although his eyes were nowhere near as striking as Maria’s. She swallowed down thoughts of Maria or Sean. If she didn’t keep control of herself, if they guessed that she had partners out there, then the game was as good as lost. This stranger in a suit couldn’t know anything real about her.

When they forced her to walk past him she made sure to throw him a cocky grin.

He didn’t seem affected by it. She didn’t register to him any more than an object. Good to know. He nodded at one of the uniformed men. “Take her in.”

Asshole.

Blurb: Better to reign in hell….

Uriel 3019 has been a cybernetically altered angel since he volunteered for the program fifteen years ago. His devotion to the floating city of Heaven is fierce, and he’ll follow any command he’s given. But Uriel’s orderly world is crumbling. Angels are going mad, even hurting people. Some are rebelling, and the noble families are vying for control—by any means necessary.

Uriel’s latest assignment brings him into a secret society, where his partner, Raphael, is working for freedom and equality for all angels. Could their group be responsible for the angels’ recent erratic behavior? Uriel is determined to find out—and report on his findings. But he doesn’t count on Raphael’s confession—that he has feelings for Uriel—or the memories slowly starting to return from the time before he became an angel.

Is he on the right side? Does he dare to stand against Heaven, even if doing so will save his fellow angels from becoming soulless automatons? Uriel has to decide if his loyalty belongs to his superiors… or to the angel who’s stolen his heart.

Review: Angels are rebelling and the head families want to know who is doing it and to stop. Uriel’s mission is to undercover the culprits but along the way his memories start to return and he is torn. Couple with the fact he finds out Raphael is part of the rebellion puts him in a tight spot. Uriel has a thing for Raphael and Raphael feels the same but according to the law of heaven that is wrong. It will take both of them to uncover the families that have done so much damage to people.

I loved the explanations throughout this story. The complex hierarchy of the heavens was unbelievable not to mention the families fighting for control. I honestly wanted to slap every single one of them for things they made these men do in order for control. Did they honestly think they would be able to get away with their evil doings forever?

Uriel and Raphael were great together when Uriel finally relented. I loved them both.

Fantastic read.

Blurb: The truth could lead to war.

Henry “Hank” Abraham enjoys being one of the most sought-after personalities in Heaven. Life is good in the floating city for someone born to one of the wealthy and influential Founding Families. Hank parties with the privileged and beds someone different every night, flouting the morality laws that control the lives of the common people on the city’s lower levels. Then someone tries to kill him—repeatedly. Terrorists have Hank in their crosshairs, and his long disinterest in politics has come home to roost.

Ian Caldwell has been a security guard for the Abraham family for years. He survives the hypocrisy by sneaking away to the BDSM clubs on Earth to feed his baser desires. When he’s assigned to protect Hank, Ian pushes his attraction for his client aside. That kind of thing could get him reprogrammed. But he doesn’t count on actually falling for a man who isn’t as shallow and self-absorbed as he seems. Neither of them is prepared for the truth behind the attacks. Their journey will take them from Heaven to hell and beyond… and it might bring the tension between the classes to a violent head at last.

Review: I loved everything about this story. Hank and Ian are basically employee and boss. But they have secretly wanted each other. Due to heaven’s law though they were unable to admit their feelings. We read about these two in Angel 1089. The dynamic between them is hot and steamy. Yet they both want a life where they can live freely.

Deals, uneasy alliances are made when Hank and Ian escape heaven for a while only to have an extremely hard time getting back. I loved the suspense not knowing what the future held for these two. It was a great mix of dynamics as we see how heaven is ruled and how downside is ruled. Fascinating and very detailed I was enthralled from start to finish.

I loved Hank and Ian and was cheering them on. I so wanted to see them be able to live their lives in as much peace as was possible in this world. I loved it.

Fantastic read.

Review: Gabriel 1089 is a genetically modified angel. He volunteered for the program not knowing what at it entails. Now many, many years later he finds himself in Jeff’s care with no memories except for when he was attacked by demons.

I found this story fascinating. The angels are not what I would call angels myself. They are humans that have been modified. To make matters worse they have no free will. Everything they do is controlled. They are sent out on missions to do what the controller wants. My heart blend for these people.

Any form of slavery is wrong. I detested what was happening to these men. Surprisingly the demons seemed to be the good guys in this awesome story. Yes they attacked Gabriel and left him stranded on earth but they had an ulterior motive. They want to take down the angel system and free those that have been trapped.

Jeff was a great character with a sad tale. But he helped Gabe as best he could. You could feel the chemistry between these two. With Gabe’s memories coming back he had a lot to struggle through. Jeff was there to help.

Awesome story.

Review: James and Cole have been best friends since junior high, and boyfriends not to long after that. James went off to join the military and Cole stayed home to teach kids. Long distance relationship is pretty hard but these two make it seem easy. This is the first Christmas however, when Cole would be celebrating alone. When James sent him a box with a puzzle in it, Cole knew he was in for a hunt.

I found that I actually liked this quite a bit, and would wish that it was turned into a longer story. It is a short story that had quite a bit of detail and depth to it. I was quite surprised, there are not many short stories that have that. Usually you just get a taste and it is done, but this gives you so much more. I enjoyed the adventure and these two are just plain perfect for each other. I will be looking at this author’s work from now on. I had a lot of fun with it and would definitely recommend it.

Review: Love in the Time of Hurricanes is part of Dreamspinner Press’ States of Love series. It’s fairly obvious from the title that this one (and predictable if you haven’t read the blurb yet) that we are looking at New Jersey around the time of Hurricane Sandy (though I suppose it could have been New Orleans during Katrina, whatever).

This is a charming tale of two young men and in some ways I think of this as something of a coming to age story. The story is largely narrated by main character Nick Henderson. He moved to New Jersey to get away from his family and the degree that he didn’t enjoy at Rutger’s University. He is getting weary from living up to his parent’s expectations – specifically his father’s. So he goes to Jersey, rents a friend’s place and enrolls in to classes that he would enjoy at the nearby Shore Community College. Clearly he comes from some money, so at first it comes across as Nick’s attempt at rebellion – but Nick is so damn sweet and adorable and lovable that you cannot help but cheer him on and sigh over his crush for the local pizza guy.

Lou Martelli works at the family pizzeria on the Jersey Shore. He’s a sweet guy from a traditional Italian family. The stereotype of all that entails makes life or Lou difficult. Then Hurricane Sandy arrives and things just got even more complicated for the pair. Ultimately, though, these guys share one common problem – they are both too scared to face up to their high handed fathers.

Blurb: Henry “Hank” Abraham’s privileged status in the floating city of Heaven lets him flout Morality Laws that control the lives of others. But when he wakes up in the arms of another stranger, only bodyguard Ian Caldwell’s quick thinking saves his life.

Though Ian’s from the low levels and the labor class, he’s used to dealing with the pampered society of Heaven. He’s assigned to protect Hank while angels, cybernetically modified humans who defend Heaven, investigate the assassination attempt. Doing his job means Ian must ignore his growing interest in Hank. Acting on their mutual attraction would certainly get Ian reprogrammed, something neither of them can afford.

When Hank follows Ian to a popular BDSM club in Downside and his ID chip is lost during a nearly fatal mugging, he finds himself locked out of Heaven. As Ian fights to get them home, rumors of impending war begin to circulate—along with more troubling news that Ian is wanted for Hank’s murder. While struggling to keep the man he has come to love safe, Ian must find out who’s behind the plot and if it’s a catalyst for war or just a convenient excuse.

Review: This was a book whose world-set caused many, many questions in me. The basic society set up is the classic element of how rich people are viewed against the less fortunate.

Hank has everything he wants and leads a life that has no purpose besides partying all night long. When his life is endangered by assassinations attempts though, Ian, his bodyguard saves him time and again. Hank is used to getting what he wants, but there is simply one thing he can’t get his hands on, Ian. For Ian pursuing anything with Hank could mean losing everything he has achieved. Having male-male intercourse is against the law, but Ian’s lifestyle is even more dangerous than that. Being a Dom is not easy in Heaven, so Ian often travels Downside to Hell to sate his cravings.

When Hank follows him there it’s both the best thing he could do, and the very worse, for while he avoided being killed in his own apartment by doing so, both Ian and Hank are trapped Downside with assassins the last thing on their mind. They are in danger if they stay, but in greater danger if the go back too.

The plot is not challenging, yet it still remains interesting. I admit to have been charmed by it and reading it with great curiosity. It was evident from the beginning who was behind the murder attempts. Still the action was fun. Perhaps it was the most enjoyable thing in this book.

The world-set is what rather blew my mind. It was a very interesting idea what with angels being computerized humans, made of high-tech, floating cities that were called Heaven, different tiers on the Heaven’s society, politics that made even the notion of the most peaceful place a pit of hyenas and cobras set on poisoning and turning against each other. The classic angels are non-existent here and I admit that it intrigued me. God AI? Heh, it definitely had a ring about it. However, it begged for more questions. We see that Angels are humans wiped out of emotions and loaded with high-tech. So what are the Demons? Why were the demons depicted as the classic ones, with leathery wings, horns and golden eyes? Angels gained their power from technology, but where did Demons take their power from? Heaven was created after the old Earth was destroyed by greed or whatever, so humans were forced to build floating cities, the rich went higher and the laborers who built the cities remained on the lower tiers with the very unfortunate people remaining on “Hell” aka Earth. The angels abandoned the fight for earth and literally left it behind to the demons…

Still I insist on knowing where did the Demons come from in first place? How were they summoned? From where? If God was AI, who is Megatron? What was Anael, why was she so unique (I’m smelling intrigue here)? Who is behind these mysterious figures? Who created them in first place? And most importantly, what was the cause behind the angels’ reaction in the end of this story?

Questions, questions, questions… I wonder if I’ll get an answer for them, and frankly, this is the only thing keeping me intrigued and wanting to read the next book, because as it is, this entire thing is full of holes, and the intimate parts of it quite failed. I wonder if I should go there. I just need to point out for the author’s benefit as well, that having a sex scene between two people ending in about a couple of minutes to mere seconds every time is not fun. Especially when the BDSM element is thrown there and one of them is a total virgin at the scene, including the “morality” brainwashing of years, finding pain as erotic so suddenly, it was just too hasty and hazy, while it required a lot of developing. In any case, the romantic thing between Ian and Hank could have been dealt much, much better. As it was, it failed for me.

But, you’ll notice how I still have 3 Hearts for this book. I liked despite all the above. I liked the action and I want more, and if you don’t count, the sex scenes I liked the whole flirting and chasing that went between this pair so, there. I hope the next one covers my curiosity though.

Blurb: Opening a portal to love.

Socket and Valor have been best friends—and part time superheroes—for years. When an invasion force threatens the Earth, they form a team of heroes to face the threat.

Closeted media darling Valor has no idea that Socket has been nursing a crush on him since their high school days. When a buffer, grittier version of Socket emerges from one of the alien portals, Valor discovers his own attraction, but his refusal to out himself gets in the way of his and Socket’s budding intimacy.

The alternate Socket has his own agenda, however. One that doesn’t include attachments or a team of do-gooders getting in his way.

Product Link: http://musapublishing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=593

Review: This was a very nice story, I admit to being partial to this genre though and super heroes always have a special allure to me. This is the story of Earth and how it came near to being conquered by aliens if now for the existence of men and women with special abilities, powers if you will.

In this version of Earth, accidents happen. That’s how most characters became special, but others simply were born that way, manifesting their changes in adolescence as is common in comic books. Our main characters are Valor and Socket. They’ve been friends for years ever since a teen Valor prevented a teen Socket from taking the wrong path. They became fast friends and their friendship always verged on a bit more. For ten years, they were everything they had; Valor was Socket’s family since he was pretty much alone, and Socket became the only person who knew the real man behind Valor’s mask. No matter how many secrets and experiences they shared together through the years though, they both had one little secret each kept from the other.

Socket, out and proud since a teenager never shared with Valor that he has been deeply in love with his best friend. And Valor, always the golden boy, the public and media’s darling never admitted to Socket he is in fact bisexual. Imagine the guilt of Socket pinning after his straight best friend, and imagine the shame Valor feels for being attracted to men and yet not able to share this thing with the only person that knows everything about him.

It isn’t until Earth is endangered by robots and alien invasion through portals that things become delicate, the lines blur, and their friendship literally gets on the line.
Valor in front of the cameras and Socket behind in the shadows pulling the strings create a team of super heroes called The Division to fight for Earth.

The story is written fairly well. We have Valor who is blessed with enormous strength, near indestructibility, and the ability to fly. Socket who can talk with computers. He is the puppeteer, the guy that stays behind and coordinates everything, the mastermind behind all their technology. Doc Lightning, a doctor in real life and mistress of electric energy, her bolts are scary powerful. Dash with her supper-speed, Mace with his magnetic field mastery, and Tiana, the purple alien of the Ellorian people who’s got stranded on Earth and adopted by Socket. There are other characters who come in and out, but this is the core team, The Division.

Now, if I let the complete nerd take charge I’ll have to say that there ought to be more in this story on all counts. I’d have loved for reasoning, more elaborate that is, for these characters’ powers. I’d have loved for their background and cover stories to have been more solid. I’d have loved for their fights to have been more… logical, and I’d have loved for the villains to have actually had a bit more intellect, because really they sucked, and we all know the best part of a super-hero story are the villains.

As the plot will have it there are portals that open up connecting this Earth with another dimension, a parallel Earth, that has already been taken over by aliens, and their citizens are already slaved to the Overseers. The same people existing in this dimension exist in the other… almost. So our heroes are taken aback when along with the robots Peter charges in from a portal killing them as if it was no big deal.

Now Peter Barnes is the other self of Socket. They look alike if Socket actually had it in him to leave his command base and exercise. Peter is hot, with a killer body, and a fabulous mastery of swords. He ought to be though as he’s survived in his world by being good enough for the arena the Overseers indulge so much to. Peter comes with the story of having escaped his Master and landed on this dimension by chance, and is therefore given refugee by our team.

Did I say this story has some holes in there? Well, there are plenty and again if I really want to be the nerd that can’t let go of little details I’d say the entire villainy plot is wobbly at best. You just can’t have a proper, powerful super-team if you don’t have perfect bad guys, and these bad guys here were far, far from great, let alone perfect.

As for the romance of the story, Peter becomes the reason Valor realizes he’s in love with Socket, and while things seem perfect for a while there, those little secrets they have between them two and the hang-ups and the different mind-set quickly turn things sour. And we all know when a hero is distracted by unrequited love, love gone wrong etc. etc. they can hardly think straight and see what’s in front of their eyes. There is not much challenge left in the end for Peter to accomplish his goal.
As for the pair itself while having some seriously hot scenes, it failed to make me feel that spark, the real chemistry that would make me drown in the words and emerge only to gasp for air. It failed to give me the longing those two should have had.

Overall, as I said at the beginning, I’m partial to this genre. I’m also a bit demanding when it comes to it. This book could have been much, much better. Normally I’d have rated it lower too, but I let myself go and for the most part, I managed to enjoy it. If you indulge in the genre once in a while you’ll find it enjoyable as well and probably love it and want some more. If however you’re one of those nerdy types that eat comic books for breakfast I think you’ll find the above and many more to ruin the experience for you.
