Prime’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 4 Hearts:

How to Run With Wolves is the fifth book in the series Howl at the Moon by Eli Easton. I adore this unique series and have enjoyed all four previous books a lot. Overall, the series is sweet and really quite charming, which fits since there are characters who have not always been human and some only recently transformed into dog shape shifters. While the previous books didnā€™t have a lot of angst, this one really does ramp up the angst with one MC and a number of minor characters having very little trust to the outside world.

I read on Amazon that this book can be read as part of the series or as a standalone. And while I do agree with that, there are not plot arcs which tie this book to the previous books, I recommend reading this this series if you can just to get a feel for the world of Mad Creek as it was set up. But then again, if something is a series I canā€™t stand not reading it all.

Since the end of the fourth book, we pick up with Mad Creek Search and Rescue team having been formed and now deployed to help humans during natural disasters, in their human skins not in their dog skins. One of the rescuers is Zeus. He was born quickened and grew up in Mad Creek and had moved away for a while. Unlike other quickened, he is shy around people and has an intense dislike for crowds. But nature and the open spaces call out to him and appeal to the Saint Bernard nature of his dog counterpart. It is on a rescue in Alaska that he discovers another quick. He hadnā€™t understood at first, until he figures out that the quick that he had seen must be part of a native tribe which keep to themselves. This is an exciting revelation because the town of Mad Creek had always wondered and was sure that they couldnā€™t be the only quickened in the world.

Timo lives with the rest of his tribe, which they call themselves two-skin as they change into the Huskies that used to be sled dogs for one of the local Alaskan tribes before white settlement. His ancestors had left the human world and they now live isolated. When he found another two-skin who was using his enhanced sense of smell to locate and save humans this was not a complete surprise, the surprise was that they were helping humans. Timo is in fact on an expedition to find more two-skins on their own to join their tribe, with low live birth rates the group is dwindling in numbers rapidly. But really, he needed to get away. His brother, Yuki, is the alpha in a group that has a definite pecking order that made life harsh, especially for Timoā€™s little sister, Hitty.

With their paths now together, Zeus and Timo want to help their people. Timoā€™s distrusting nature makes his character feel cold and distant, and at sometimes a tad manipulative. He is slow to trust, even when the people of Mad Creek give their help. However, that is the harsh reality of world in which he lives. Mad Creek is a revelation to Timo, but Timo knows that he needs to save his people. Between all this, Timo needs to understand what is happening between him and Zeus. His is everything that is kind and gentle, but also strong. He has a lot to deal with emotionally, something that he hasnā€™t had to do in the past. Zeus is certainly opening him to a new world of possibilities in more ways than you can imagine.

Shorty’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

Timo and Zeus meet when their lives collide with each others when Zeus is sent on a search and rescue in Alaska after an earthquake. Zeus is sweet and caring. Timo is from a Qimmig pack who used to be dogs many, many generations before. They had a falling out after they quickened and removed themselves from the inuit they were with.

Timo has outdated ideas about a pack due to their isolation from everyone else. Timo goes to mad creek with Zeus and begins to see things in a different light. But it still takes time for him to admit and process how he feels about Zeus. Between feelings, getting to know others and finding solutions to the Qimmig’s survival love blossoms.

Amazing story with love and struggles. I loved everything about the story. The descriptions of Alaska were beautiful and awe inspiring.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Blurb: Rav Miller looked into the terrified, intelligent eyes of the chocolate Labrador on death row, and knew heā€™d do anything to save him. When the dog, Sammy, escapes and heads to Mad Creek, Rav follows. Mad Creek. The town had become legendary in Ravā€™s mind after heā€™d met that bizarre group last year. Rav dismissed his crazy suspicions back then, but when he arrives in Mad Creek, he knows itā€™s true. Dog shifters exist, and apparently they all live in the California mountains. Itā€™s enough to blow a bad boyā€™s mind.

Sammy has something in common with Ravā€”neither one of them trusts people. After Sammyā€™s abuse as a dog, he particularly dislikes tough-looking men like Rav. But when Sammy gets a chance to work with rescued dogs at the new Mad Creek shelter, his deep compulsion to help others overcomes his fear. Rav and Sammy bond over saving strays. If they can each find the courage to let someone else in, they might find their way to love.

Sheriff Lance Beaufort doesnā€™t like humans moving into Mad Creek, especially not the tattooed and defiant Rav. When Rav starts a rescue shelter, the town thinks heā€™s wonderful! But Lance isnā€™t fooled. He doesnā€™t buy Ravā€™s innocent act for one second. How much does Rav know about the quickened? What is his game? And why did he have to show up now, when Lance and the other town leaders are overwhelmed by all the new quickened pouring in?

Rav knows how to save a life. But can he save an entire town? Can he rescue Mad Creek?

Prime’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 4 Hearts:

How to Save A Life is the fourth book in series Howl to the Moon by Eli Easton. I adore this unique series. It is sweet and while there is plenty of drama and misunderstanding, which fits since there are characters who have not always been human and some only recently transformed. However, there is not a lot of angst, which is something that I liked a lot, and I felt it really fit the bubbly personalities of dogs that had been completely adored in their time before they transformed.

Rav Miller is a man with a mysterious past. He had left his life behind to help dogs by opening and running a dog shelter. He has a deep passion for helping dogs, especially those in kill shelters. For the past year the strange encounter he had with a group of men ā€“ and a couple of their dogs ā€“ from Mad Creek had him intrigued with the town. The mystery deepens for him when a new dog that he rescued, Sammy, runs out of the shelter and makes it all the way to Mad Creek on foot. Rav follows Sammy chip and is intrigued by the town. He can tell that there is something different and when ideas and bizarre suspicions are formed in his head, he figures out what is going on all on his own.

Rav is very much an alpha male and when he sees the situation in Mad Creek (high unemployment), he wants to fix it, that the town is populated by people that can shape shift into dogs gives him the idea. Having decided to start another shelter, this one in Mad Creek, Rav also has to deal with disapproving and grumpy sheriff, while trying to get glimpses of the skittish man called Sammy. But the shelter isnā€™t going to help the town financially and he has to deal with sheriff who is extremely grumpy and overprotective of his people ā€“ itā€™s definitely a clash of the alphas!

Sammy is newly quickened, he has had two owners that loved him. One of them had died and the other is a victim of domestic violence. Sammy was in a kill shelter when another quick also at the shelter told him about Mad Creek. After he was saved from the kill shelter by Rav, Sammy escapes Ravā€™s shelter and heads to Mad Creek. He goes for the job advertised at the new shelter, the caring and loyal nature of his dog half helps him to overcome his fears. Now working with Rav side by side the two men have a lot to learn.

I will admit that this is not my most favourite book of the series, but itā€™s still pretty damn good. I donā€™t know why, I think that I found it a little difficult to connect to Rav, itā€™s the only thing that I can think of. I think I also found it a little odd how he randomly decided to pick up his entire life on what seemed to be a whim.

A final side note, because I was surprisingly slow about this realisation, but I just managed to link all the titles in this series to a song. Although not all the songs have the ā€œhow toā€ in the song title, thatā€™s just minor details. This epiphany happened started because I got the song How to Save A Life by The Fray stuck in my head, I already have Wish Upon A Star from Pinocchio stuck in head. Then I remembered that song by The Script called Howling at the Moon and then it just snowballed from there. Done! Iā€™m happy I got that out and Iā€™m kind of ridiculously happy about it.

Shorty’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

I adored this story about Rav and Sammy. Sammy is so sweet and cute yet has been abused by a previous owner then taken to a pound. When it’s almost his time to be put to sleep Rav takes him in. From there Sammy escapes and heads to Mad Creek where Rav follows.

Things are not smooth for these two. Rav has to get Sammy to realize not everyone is out to hurt him. With Lance not trusting strangers Rav has a way to go in getting the town to trust that he will keep their secret. It helps when he figures out a way to bring in much needed revenue an jobs for the town.

Adorable, sweet and cute this story had me in tears at times. I loved the way the story progressed and ended.

Fantastic read.

Prime’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

How to Wish Upon A Star is the third book in Eli Eastonā€™s series Howl at the Moon. It is based around the town and people of Mad Creek in California. What makes them special is that they are quickened, which is dog shape shifters which received the spark of magic that gave seemingly ordinary dogs the ability to shape shift into human. Many of the inhabitants have passed on the ability for generations, but the newly quickened are those that started life as a dog before becoming quickened.

The characters of this book are Milo and Jason Kunik. The former being a recently turned quickened and the latter being a third generation quickened who was also a scientist who studied the potential genetic side of things on the side.

Dr Jason Kunik has returned home to Mad Creek after being away for ten years. Heā€™s done his studies, did his PhD and then went onto work for a major company in a lab, doing genetic research. On the side he has also looked into dog and human DNA, trying to begin to unravel the mystery of the quick. Unlike many quickened, he isnā€™t really in touch with his canine side and to some extent he resents his dog.

Back home in Mad Creek there isnā€™t a lot he can do without a lab, still he continues on with his research which includes interviewing the recently quickened residents of town. Itā€™s not going well for him. Jason has a lot of problems being able to communicate with them, some still struggle with human speech, but he also is a stereotypical nerd and finds it difficult to communicate. I kind of donā€™t really like that, but I do know from personal experience that many scientists do struggle to pass down information to those that are not familiar with their area. In short, Iā€™m of two minds when it comes to that part of Jason, but he otherwise a smart cookie.

Meeting Milo is something unexpected to Jason in many ways and he doesnā€™t know how to deal with his attraction, much the same as Milo isnā€™t too sure. Their situation changes when there is an illness affecting the quick of Mad Creek. The only doctor the quick have is the town vet, a human who had mated a quick lady and so the sheriff and the town doc enlist Jasonā€™s help. The scientist/microbiologist in me wants to over analyse things when it comes to Jasonā€™s work but I wonā€™t because this is fiction and I need to realise that I should let people have their fun.

Milo is everything that is sweet and naĆÆve in this book. I love his story when he eventually tells it to Jason. If anything I wanted to know more about that side of things, not necessarily from Jason but finding out how ā€œrealā€ that was. Milo was made quickened after living his life as a comfort dog in a hospice, he could sense illness and when a patient was going to pass on. He had become attached to a couple patients in particular and as he realised he was getting more smarter, he was sad when the people died of their assorted illnesses. I totally loved Milo, he has so much love to give and he can see that Jason needs a little bit of love in his life. Part of it because he was a comfort dog, but the rest is all chemistry between the characters.

Shorty’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

Jason and Milo have a town to save and a virus to destroy when the quickened in town become sick. It’s grueling process the quickened go through. It’s a race against time for Jason to find a cure before the unthinkable happens. All the while Jason starts having feelings for Milo and Vice versa.

I loved these two together. Milo was so sweet and innocent. His ability to comfort others and be able to tell when they’re sick was invaluable to Jason. The story was tense at times with the right amount of drama interspersed to make for an amazing story.

I loved everything about the book and found it quite entertaining to read.

Fantastic read and addition to the series.

Blurb: Deputy Roman Charsguard survived Afghanistan where he lost his best friendā€”his K-9 handler James. Roman was a military dog until two years ago when he developed the ability to shift into a human. Itā€™s not easy to learn how to be a man. He found a place to live in Mad Creek, a haven for the secret world of dog shifters. Finding a reason to live has been harder. That is, until a certain human walks into the Mad Creek Sheriffā€™s office and starts making trouble.

Matt Barclay has the worst luck. First he was shot in a SWAT drug raid, then he was sent as DEA investigator to Mad Creek, a little town in the California mountains. Mattā€™s job is to keep a lookout for illegal drug farms, but nobody in the town wants him there. And then thereā€™s Roman, Mattā€™s erstwhile baby-sitter. Heā€™s the hottest guy Mattā€™s ever seen, even if he is a bit peculiar. If this job doesnā€™t kill Matt, sexual frustration just might.

The town is counting on Roman to prevent Matt from learning about dog shifters, Mattā€™s counting on Roman to be his work partner and tell him the truth, and Romanā€™s trying to navigate love, sex, and a whole lot of messy human emotions. Who knew it was so complicated to walk like a man?

Prime’s Review: šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts

How to Walk Like a Man is the second book in Eli Eastonā€™s Howl at the Moon series. While I hadnā€™t known what to expect when I started book one, I was really excited to read book 2. I strongly recommend reading this series in order, not only is it a fun, charming and sweet series, it is also totally unique. Also, there are a number of sub plots that are directly linked to book one and I think it would difficult to appreciate this book on its own.

After reading book 1, I couldnā€™t wait to start How to Walk Like a Man after I read the blurb. We me Roman, one of the MCs of this book, while reading Lance and Timā€™s story in book 1. Roman had instantly intrigued me in the first book, he had such a gentle, firm but protective nature that I wanted to know more about the man and the dog that he was. After all, Roman is quickened, meaning that he had been born a dog but the love and emotion from his human owner meant that Roman received the spark that caused him to transform after his owner died.

Romanā€™s back story is one that will appeal to most readers. He was a military dog and had complete adoration for his handler, of course this affection was returned him. He was in Afghanistan with his handler, sniffing out bombs and the like. I wonā€™t spoil and give the full back story, but itā€™s easy to figure out even reading the book. I loved the emotional connection I felt to this story line.

But now that he lives in Mad Creek and over the past couple years has learnt to be a man, he finds a new place in life. His military training makes him perfect to help the sheriff and has been recently made a deputy. With drugs threatening to encroach, Roman now has the job of babysitting the human DEA agent who has come to scope out Mad Creek for drugs.

In fact, the human DEA agent, Matt Barclay had also appeared in book 1, albeit very briefly. He had been shot in the cross fire and Roman had saved him then. Again, I wonā€™t go into it because this all ties in with Romanā€™s backstory. But trust me, it is all very sweet. Matt knows that there is something different about Mad Creek, and he also knows that Roman is keeping him away from the town, which puts him on alert. The fact that the two men have a lot of chemistry is just another added layer for Matt.

This story is everything that is sweetness with the added strength of characters that are from law enforcement. Roman is naĆÆve when it comes to human love and physicality, so he is learning a lot along the way. It is this naivety that adds the charm into the story, while Matt is more worldly but isnā€™t about to storm Romanā€™s defences. Once again, I loved this story. This is an excellent series I recommend to those that love a good shape shifter story.

Shorty’s Review: šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts

I loved this story about Roman and Matt. Keeping a secret from Matt was hard for Ro as he was such an honest and open person but keep it he did. With the threat of possible drug being grown in their town Lance and Roman attend a meeting where they learn a DEA agent will be assigned to their town. It’s up to Roman to keep the man from learning the truth about them.

Roman’s back story is both happy and heartbreaking. He was a brave German shepherd and served his country well while in the service. He had a hard time adjusting as a human which was to be expected. Matt suspects things are going on but does not report the strange things he see’s to his superior. As the investigation continues he and Roman grow closer.

I found this story to be dramatic, humorous and intense at times. I liked the way the story flowed and progressed. Amazing addition to the series.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Blurb: Sheriff Lance Beaufort is not going to let trouble into his town, no sir. Tucked away in the California mountains, Mad Creek has secrets to keep, like the fact that half the town consists of ā€˜quickenedā€™ā€”dogs who have gained the ability to become human. Descended on both sides from Border Collies, Lance is as alert a guardian as they come.

Tim Weston is looking for a safe haven. After learning that his boss patented all of Timā€™s work on vegetable hybrids in his own name, Tim quit his old job. A client offers him use of her cabin in Mad Creek, and Tim sees a chance for a new start. But the shy gardener has a way of fumbling and sounding like a liar around strangers, particularly gorgeous alpha men like Sheriff Beaufort.

Lanceā€™s hackles are definitely raised by the lanky young stranger. Heā€™s concerned about marijuana growers moving into Mad Creek, and heā€™s not satisfied with the boyā€™s story. Lance decides a bit of undercover work is called for. When Tim hits a beautiful black collie with his car and adopts the dog, its love at first sight for both Tim and Lanceā€™s inner dog. Prime’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

How to Howl at the Moon is the first book in Eli Eastonā€™s series, Howl at the Moon. I wasnā€™t quite sure what to expect, Easton is not an unknown author to me and Iā€™ve always enjoyed her writing style. I canā€™t think of a book that I havenā€™t either liked or loved. The thing that I wasnā€™t sure about was the shape shifting part, as I donā€™t think Iā€™ve read anything by Easton that involves paranormal themes.
However, all these concerns were for nothing. Other than an excellently written book that was easy to follow and had be completely engrossed from start to finish, this was a really different take on the whole shape shifter thing. While it wasnā€™t dark and gritty, this is a rather light hearted series that is great to read when you donā€™t want to go full angst, this was a creative and unique look at how shape shifters come about. Itā€™s fascinating because I love that the creation/emergence of shifters gets a back story. To put it simply, that is really cool.

The story starts with Sheriff Lance Beaufort, from the little town of Mad Creek nestled in the Californian mountains. He, like his father and grandfather before him, protect the town from any threats and discovery by humans. Lance and much of Mad Creek are called ā€œquickenedā€ or ā€œquickā€. A quickened is a dog, an actual pet dog, who was so loved that they received the ability to shape shift, becoming half man and half dog. This transformation is called receiving the ā€œsparkā€. Lance is a third generation quickened, which means that he was never a pet, instead he was born with the ability to change.

For Lance, life is not smooth, trying to help the newly quickened as they arrive in town, and adding the danger of discovery caused by humans with increasing drug trade Lance is on alert. When a new human moves into town, Lance is concerned especially since he appears to be an adept gardener. Despite his physical attraction to the man, Lance canā€™t do anything with the human ā€“ not until he sure that man is not growing and distributing marijuana. But the other obstacle of having a human around, until there is complete trust Lance cannot betray the town and his family and reveal the secret of the quickened.

When Tim Weston moves into a house in Mad Creek, looking for a safe place to regroup. After losing the rights and trademarks of the hybrids he had created from the boss that he had trusted, he has nothing and the opportunity for free rent while working on new hybrids is an enticing offer which he takes. He likes Mad Creek and begins to fix things so that he can start creating his hybrids. The problem is that when he arrived, he attracted the interest of the sheriff and not in a good way.

This is a totally unique story and a lot of fun. The characters have a bit of a slow burn chemistry, but they are also completely endearing. Loved this book, canā€™t wait to move onto the next book.

Shorty’s Review šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ’– 5 Hearts:

I loved Lance and Tim together even though Lance screw things up at first by deceiving Tim. This story is about a misunderstanding leading to investigating an innocent man and the antics of several characters that lead to anger and an attack by people who have ill intent.

I loved everything about the story. It progressed beautifully. there was the right amount of sexual tension, shyness, frustration, humor, and suspense to make for a well written book that fully immerses the reader in a quaint little town and it’s inhabitants.

The explanation behind quicken was intriguing to say the least. I loved all the characters and am looking forward to getting know more of them as the series continues.

Pretending to be a pet is about to get Sheriff Beaufort in very hot water.

Review: Tim Weston’s youth and naivetĆ© have caused him a lot of pain in his life. He is in his early twenties and never had a positive role model. His father was abusive, his former boss a worthless liar and a thief.

So Tim quits his job, packs up and heads to Mad Creek where a friend is lending Tim her house for six months so he can work on some hybrid seeds for plants and vegetables. Right away he draws attention, since Mad Creek is a town full of shifters, Tim sort of sticks out like a sore thumb.

Sheriff Lance Beaufort has his doubts about Tim’s intentions from the start, so he befriends Tim in his shifter form, a border collie that Tim names Chance. In his shifter form, Lance can spy on the newcomer to see if he is up to no good.

The more time Lance spends with Tim, in both forms, the more attached he becomes. Things can’t help but end badly when Tim discovers that someone else he could care for has been lying to him.

Let me tell you how refreshing it was to read a story about something other than wolves. I love Easton’s unique take on the shifter world with the dogs, how some don’t manifest their first shift until later in life, and some have issues acclimating to the real world after being in their dog form for so long.

Even better than the unique story was the narration. My first listen with Matthew Shaw and I loved his take on the story. He literally dove into the characters, right down to every growl, howl and bark.

If you are looking for a fast, fun story that is both well written and entertaining, you should give this story a go.
