Review: Something Wild is a standalone romance by Anna Martin. While the author is known to me, nothing immediately comes to mind about any opinions that I’ve formed in the past. Let’s face it, I saw dinosaurs in the blurb and I was happy.

I’m going to get my negativity out of the way first. While I loved the set up of the book, the themes and the characters, I felt that there was something missing in terms of spark between the MCs. The spark was there, but I’m thinking that there wasn’t quite enough character development that meant that the book exceeded my expectations. TL:DR version – I just wasn’t feeling “it” a number of times throughout the book.

Now: the dinosaurs and the inevitable pop culture references.

Something Wild, to me, is like if Jurassic Park was a scientific commune combined with a national parks type of set-up, rather than a theme park. And the romance was as if Dr Grant (palaeontologist) and Robert Muldoon (Jurrasic Park game warden) discovered that they had romantic feelings for each other. In this world a small, isolated archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean was found to the be home of dinosaurs in the 1970s, when everyone had previously thought them extinct. Since them, the archipelago has become a protected site for these amazing animals, with the only people are the scientists who study and protect the creatures.

Basically, what you see in the blurb is what you get in the book. So there isn’t any real surprises, and to be honest with the poaching subplot, I had that figured out pretty quickly. Nonetheless it was good to see how the characters arrived at their conclusions in the end, and our heroes saved the day.

The MCs are palaeogeneticist, Kit Sterling and head ranger, Logan Beck. In the big scheme of things, Kit and Logan are nemeses by any stretch of the imagination. Instead they have a complicated relationship at the start simply because their work does not bring them together all that often. I mean, yeah, Kit and Logan would have encountered the usual academic arguments you see these days of whose name should be included on published papers, and at what line do you draw between acknowledging someone to giving them authorship. But again, in the big scheme of things, that’s actually normal in the academic world.

As a palaeoscientist specialising in dinosaur genetics, Kit doesn’t venture into the wilds of the dinosaur habitat, instead getting information and samples (from blood to carcasses) from the rangers. He is also on the ethics committee, and so he has a particular and stringent set of rules that he requires the rangers to follow when they are out among the dinosaurs.

Then there is Logan is essentially a field scientist, who had previously worked in safari parks in Africa, after completing his PhD (he is referred to as Dr Beck numerous times and is explained in the beginning) he found his calling in the wild with animals, although that also meant that many lab-based scientists overlooked his expertise. He loves working with the dinosaurs on the archipelago and is meticulous when it comes to ensuring the care of all animals on the islands.

It is perhaps fortunate that Logan’s experience in Africa means that he recognises the signs of poachers on the Island, which coincides with the possibility of dinosaur leather being sold on the black market is brought to Kit’s attention. This is the catalyst which brings Kit and Logan together, to actually work together in the field and in the lab, getting to know each other. Add in the sweetest little runt of a dinosaur, Dizzy, which pulls at Kit’s heart and has him going against the ethics code and I was happy. You can see that Kit and Logan have so much potential as they work together to find out about the poachers and foster the injured dinosaur.

Review: I always like to have a bit of look over of Dreamspinner’s Greatest Hits collection at the end of every year. For the most part, I am always satisfied by the novels featured. I’m going to change up the review format to include an individual heat and heart rating for each of the five books featured. I’m not going to go into too much detail either, just a quick summary on my thoughts of the book and an equally brief summary on the overall plot.

Anna Martin - Five Times My Best Friend Kissed Me Cover ssFive Times My Best Friend Kissed Me by Anna Martin
and One Time I Kissed Him First

Rating: Low

Heart Rating: đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’– 3.5 Hearts

This is a friends to lovers type of story, between two besties who have been fighting an attraction between each other since they were children. I’m not entirely familiar with Anna Martin’s work, so this was an interesting one for me. This is a charming tale and quite cute. I love how we get to know the characters so deeply before they get their HEA. I understand that this is greatly due to the format of the novel, the five times Scott kissed Evan is presented to us out of chronological order. Despite liking the premise (usually a sucker for these types of novels), I personally didn’t mesh well with the format and thought that it prevented me from relating to the characters, though I’m sure others will enjoy this one.

Sean Michael - The New Boy Cover ssThe New Boy by Sean Michael

Heat Rating: Explicit

Heart Rating: đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’– 4 Hearts

The New Boy is the first book in the Iron Eagle Gym series by Sean Michael. I was curious about this book because I love Sean Michael, although for me BDSM books are usually hit and miss for me. I think I enjoy books by authors that understand the lifestyle, rather than others that make the book seem like a flimsy porno. And so, long story short, I did enjoy The New Boy. Lance is a photographer just won a once in a lifetime contract to shoot photos of models in an exclusive BDSM club, the only problem he has is finding models. One model that he does meet is Tide, he is not only a model but he’s also a Dom. I loved the introduction to the host of characters and the careful way in which the relationship between Lance (the sub) and Tide (the Dom) is defined and how it works. They are contrasting characters, Lance is quiet and shy (almost naïve), while Tide is in your face, a little cocky and knows what he wants. In short they are the typical sub/Dom duo. The only issue I found was that there was not a lot of development of either main character.

Grace R. Duncan - Beautiful Boy Cover ssBeautiful Boy by Grace R. Duncan

Heat Rating: Explicit

Heart Rating: đź’–đź’–đź’– 2.5 Hearts

You know how I was just talking about those hit and miss BDSM novels? Yep, this is one of the misses for me. In part I think it’s because of the couple of Grace R. Duncan books I’ve either heard the audio for or read, I’ve always found myself struggling with connecting to the characters I think it’s now safe to say that I find the author’s style not to my taste.

This is an insta-love BDSM romance, so I know that will turn off a number of people alone. Also, I know people that don’t like orgasm denial in BDSM, yet the BDSM itself is very basic, so there is not really a lot of balance in terms of the sex play. Mal is the Dom and after tragedy struck in an ill fated relationship, he decided to turn his back on the lifestyle. But Kyle, a sub he wins at a charity slave auction, is the young man that brings him back into the lifestyle. There is danger in the form of a serial and a heck of a lot of baggage from both men.

The other thing is, I swear I’ve read a book with a very similar storyline. I’m certain it’s a different book and one that I read sometime in the past couple years – I’ve definitely not read this book before. There are details that I remember from the other book that aren’t in this one. Regardless, I can’t remember what book it was, so maybe I’m wrong.

Kim Fielding - Rattlesnake Cover ssRattlesnake by Kim Fielding

Heat Rating: Low

Heart Rating: đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’– 4.5 Hearts

This is a charming book. Although I missed it’s initial release earlier in the year I looked forward to it mostly because I love Kim Fielding’s writing. This story has a lot of heart and a sweet romance between drifter, Jimmy Dorsett and small town, average guy Shane Little. Jimmy’s encounter with a hitchhiker has him heading to Rattlesnake to deliver a letter that has come so many years too late. Shane helps Jimmy when he breaks down and the sparks light immediately between the guys. Jimmy first fights his drifter instincts, but later this turns into fighting to keep them when the prospect of settling down with Shane scares him. These guys are great together, they have a lot of chemistry but the romance is sweet.

Michael Murphy - The President's Husband Cover ssThe President’s Husband by Michael Murphy

Heat Rating: Low

Heart Rating: đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’–đź’– 5 Hearts

By far my favorite book of the collection. This is a novel from the Dreamspun Desires line, which I fell in love with earlier in the year when I heard the audio for the book. My initial thoughts haven’t changed between hearing the audio and reading the novel. Essentially, this is a story of a relationship that becomes strained due to stress. Specifically, it’s the new POTUS and his husband who are struggling between the sudden inauguration from Vice President to POTUS within the space of an hour, and the President’s husband who wants to maintain his life as doctor and med school professor while battling the conservatives that believe that the very male President’s husband cannot be in the spot light.

Blurb: Jackson Lewis isn’t a typical werewolf. He isolates himself in a small town outside Spokane and dedicates himself to making his business—Lone Wolf Brewery—a success. But he’s human. And a man.

Jackson is straight—or at least he’s always assumed so. Though he can’t deny his attraction to Leo, it’s a lot for both of them to deal with.

While Jackson and Leo figure out what their future might hold, they face prejudice from both the human and werewolf communities—including a group of fanatics willing to kill to show humans and werewolves don’t belong together..

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: I wanted to like this story about Leo and Jackson. The tension between them is off the charts. Jackson repeatedly mentions that he’s straight throughout the story. It became annoying after a while as I understood the first time he announced it. I imagine Leo was quite annoyed as well.

But alas Jackson is not as straight as he thought and he and Leo do get closer. But not without complications in between their meetings. There is a lot of back and forth with this book as I struggled to understand what the big deal was and why the character went on and on about it. Jackson should have just walked away rather than making him and Leo uncomfortable.

I was expecting some action but got a lot of over the top drama instead. Lovers of dramatic relationships will love this story. I however did not care for it myself.

O.k. read for me.

Blurb: After spending most of his life in special schools, Caleb Stone now faces public high school in his senior year, a prospect that both excites him and threatens to overwhelm his social anxiety. As a deaf teenager, he’s closed himself off to the world. He speaks a shorthand with his parents and even finds it hard to use American Sign Language with people in his local deaf community. But Caleb finds comfort in his love of photography. Everything he can’t express in real life, he posts on his Tumblr.

Struggling to reconcile his resentment for his father’s cruelty with the grief of losing a parent, Luc Le Bautillier scrolls through Tumblr searching for someone who might understand his goth look and effeminate nature. When Luc reblogs a photo by Caleb, sparking a conversation, they both find it easier to make friends online than in person.

Luc and Caleb confront their fears about the opinions of the outside world to meet in New York City. Despite Caleb’s increasing confidence, his parents worry he’s not ready for the trials ahead. But communication comes in many forms—when you learn the signs.

Review: This is one real heart warming story. This is the story of two young men, recently turned 18 and starting to think about college and the future. They meet online by chance and beautiful relationship blossoms. Much of the story is told from Luc’s side. He’s a native New Yorker with a complicated home life, though he loves his big sister and she supports him throughout. Then there is Caleb, he lives somewhere in or about Boston – he may be deaf but he is also a gifted photographer. Caleb is also blessed with amazing parents.

This is just sweet and simple: its two boys growing up into men with their own set of complications, as well as these boys getting to know each other and falling in love. I really loved both MCs and they were easily relatable and felt real. I really loved who Anna Martin was able to articulate Caleb, which I am certain is more than tricky when he communicates only using American Sign Language. This is also a whole major thread of the book and it really does show that love is a fantastic motivator and that angst isn’t a requirement of a young adult story. Best of all, there is a happily ever after!

This is an excellent read and not just for young adults, anyone can enjoy this one. I think everyone at some stage feels like a Caleb yearning for their Luc (of course, not in the literal sense!).

Reviewer: Gigi

Review: Our lives take unseen and unpredictable turns, and the people in our lives often cross paths at different intersections, sometimes walk the path with us for great lengths before trotting off on their own journey. This lovable story is a lot about that, how important people in our lives come and go, all the while making an impact present or not. It’s about best friends, growing up together, first attraction, first loves, self-questioning… all of those deep and common experiences.

Evan and Scott have an interesting and endearing dynamic as friends and eventually as a couple, but I appreciated that other people were allowed to come into their lives throughout the story, it was realistic in that sense, and helped the overall theme resonate with me.

The passionate scenes were steamy yet realistic, beautiful descriptors and romantic settings. The narration was good, not as diverse as I like for different characters but Jesse Cota’s voice suits the youthful journey these characters take from childhood to young adulthood and he reads well.

Anna Martin’s writing is always fluid and crafted expertly. A heart-warming story of a life journey from school yard pals to lifetime lovers, you’ll enjoy Five Times My Best Friend Kissed Me, a great warm and endearing read.

Reviewer: Veronica

Review: This is a first for me reading from this author and I must say that I love how good a job she did with the characters. Kip is in the Army, and he’s about to be deployed. This means, that he’s got to say goodbye to his boyfriend Lucas of four years. He will be away for the next eight months. A couple weeks shy of Kip returning home, he calls Lucas to talk to him, but the conversation doesn’t go as he would’ve like. He wants Lucas to meet him at a hotel, and Lucas wants to be there with his family when he lands.

It gets sticky here, because Kip is in the closet, and he doesn’t want Lucas exposed to his homophobic friends and possibly parents. He doesn’t know if his parents will accept him when he tells them that he’s gay and that he’s in love with Lucas. Lucas is fed up with being Kip’s secret and wants him to tell his family about them. After his conversation with Lucas, Kip and his friends go on patrol and they’re ambushed, and one of Kip’s friends is killed.

That puts Kip in perspective, and he realizes that how short life is. Especially with the profession that he’s in. He loves Lucas, and vows to return home safely to him, and that he will tell his parents about the way that he feels about Lucas regardless of their reactions. I love the way the author ended this story with the parents’ reaction to being told that he is in love with Lucas.

I would definitely recommend this story to anyone interested.

Cooper Reed has a fairly relaxed life for someone who lives in LA. He’s no celebrity—just the guy who makes sundaes at the Dreamy Creamery, and that’s the way he likes it. The highlight of every week is the beautiful guy who turns up and orders a sundae with rainbow sprinkles. Cooper still isn’t sure if that’s a code, because he has a huge crush and the hot guy is terrible at flirting.

Drew Tanner, it turns out, is an original California dreamer. He’s as wholesome as apple pie and twice as sweet, a real-life Disney Prince at Disneyland. But while Drew’s head is in the clouds, Cooper’s feet are firmly on the ground, and their different outlooks might be more than their new relationship can take.

This is not your average love story.

Ben Easton is not your average romantic hero. He’s a tattooed, badass, wannabe rock star, working in a perfectly horrible dive bar in Camden Town. His life is good, and he’s totally unprepared for how one man will turn it upside down.

Stan isn’t your average heroine. As a gender-fluid man, he proudly wears his blond hair long, his heels sky-high, and his make-up perfectly executed. A fashion industry prodigy, Stan is in London after stints working in Italy and New York City, and he quickly falls for Ben’s devil-may-care attitude and the warm, soft heart Ben hides behind it.

Beneath the perfect, elegant exterior, Stan has plenty of scars from teenage battles with anorexia. And it only takes the slightest slip for his demons to rush back in while Ben’s away touring with his band. With the band on the brink of a breakthrough, Ben is forced to find a way to balance the opportunity of a lifetime with caring for his beautiful boyfriend.

Review: If you are familiar with Anna Martin then you know what an outstanding author she is. I’ve read several of her previous titles and have loved them all. Summer Son is a little different from what I have read in the past, from her, which is a good thing. I like to read different stories by the same author when they have more than one style to choose from. This, in my opinion, certainly fit within that guideline. The story takes off rather fast and it’s not long into it before a love connection is in the works.

Ellis is raising his son, Harrison, by himself and quite honestly is a little overwhelmed. Raising a child single-handed was not something he had anticipated. He and his husband, of three years, decided together to start a family. They even went as far as not knowing which one was the biological father because what would that information provide? They would both love their child unconditionally.

Well, that was how it was supposed to work. Ellis, now a divorced single dad, works from home in order to provide the best care to his son that he can. This, of course, leaves no time for socializing or having a fun night of his own. Leave it to his friends to take matters into their own hands. A night has been arranged, babysitter lined up, and Ellis finds himself mingling and having a good time. When a new fella joins the party, Ellis is very intrigued.

Zane is a fun-loving very charismatic young man. He loves hanging out with his friends, he loves his job, and he would love to get to know the guy across from him called Ellis. He’s not there long before introductions are made and right away he is interested. They both are interested in each other and spend their time, equally, together. The more Ellis learns about Zane the more he is captivated by his strong appeal. In Ellis’s mind Zane has his act together plus he works with kids and that pretty much seals the deal for Ellis. The guys move along pretty quickly in forming their connection.

I would probably consider this insta-love if that is important to others. For me, I like characters that know what they want and aren’t afraid to go for it. I get bored quickly in a story when trouble brews through the biggest part of the story before the first kiss has ever happened. Luckily, that is not the case here. They are attracted to each other so why not act on it.

The guys have great chemistry and they move their relationship to the next level. They both realize they are moving fast but it feels right. Zane moves in with Ellis and things are running smoothly. That IS until the ex wants back into Ellis’s life. Unfortunately, Zane has a bit of trouble following him from his old life and it appears it may be following him now, in his new life. Ellis’s ex-husband is very vindictive when things don’t work his way so he causes trouble for the new lovebirds. Will they find their happy after anyway? Or does the ex stir the pot too much and create trouble they can’t escape from? It is worth your time to read Summer Son and find out. This is a fast paced novel that will keep you glued to the pages.

Anna Martin has successfully produced another winner for me. It’s not as hard-core as others I have read and dearly loved from her but it wasn’t warranted here in this story. This is a feel good story with chemistry that ignites from the pages and the dialog is quick and intriguing. This author certainly knows how to pull the reader in and keep you invested from start to finish. Anna Martin is one that I will always read without putting too much thought behind what the story is. I know if her name is attached then it is going to be a great read.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves mm and romance and what we all want, a happy ever after.

Blurb: When paleontologist Nick Eisenberg learns that someone thinks they have found velociraptor bones in Alberta, his curiosity overrides his desire to stay in London. After all, he’s one of the world’s leading experts on prehistoric predators and has always wanted to look for the velociraptor’s North American cousins. There’s only one problem: eco-conservationist Hunter Joseph. While Nick supervises the dig, Hunter rallies support from the locals to oppose the way the team is destroying the landscape in their search for dinosaur bones.

Nick and Hunter just cannot get along. Hunter is self-righteous and pouty. Nick is narrow-minded and geeky. But they have to figure out how to work on the same site without killing each other, especially since someone else out there seems determined to cause Nick more problems than he could have ever imagined.

Review: I am quickly becoming a big fan of Anna Martin. I was wondering how she would top Cricket, but she has, and with a wonderfully refreshing tale of adventure, mud and bones! I love that she combined paleontology with romance, making those geeky fossil lovers into hot heroes! Throughout the book, we learn several interesting bits of terminology regarding the field of paleontology. In fact, the author helps us out by giving us a dictionary of dino-terms in the beginning of the book.

The book brings us the competitiveness of the paleontologists, the dirt, mud and dust of the not so glamorous digs, and the methods of how a site is set up, how people organized site and reported, and the risks both physical and environmental this type of work includes. It was a very clever and exciting twist to have two opposing people, the environmental warrior, and dino-discovering doctor, be at odds with each other to the point of fisticuffs. But, you know what they say…opposites attract.

When Eric White, the original site-managing doctor gets attacked, Nick takes over the dig, expanding in a direction he knows will be a better path, and reorganizes using some of his best connections in the field. The dig is going well, full steam ahead until Hunter stops Nick’s dig to threaten him with a shut down due to environmental protection issues. The two get into an angry confrontation, the dig site is being sabotaged, and they still haven’t found Eric’s attacker, but something that cannot be denied through all the turmoil is Nick and Hunter’s attraction to each other.

Throwing in one more complication is Boner, Nick’s sometime lover and long time best friend working side by side with him on the dig. Is what Boner and Nick have romantic love and will Hunter and Nick’s affair get in the way of that? Can one even form a lasting relationship with such a big adversary? Will rains, sabotage, and attempted murder make all of these questions null and void? Too exciting to tell!

This is a great read, fast paced, entertaining and even educational! I’m impressed with Anna Martin’s research and creativity, oh yes and I can’t forget…very steamy romance writing skills!

Blurb: Alone in his East London shop, a man known only as Dalton makes living prosthetics: bionic, mechanical limbs, from leather, metal, and magic. It’s to this little corner of the capital that Finn Croucher, an elite army marksman, travels after an accident leads to his hand being amputated.

While Dalton fashions Finn’s new hand and teaches him how to use it, he reveals some secrets long hidden, and he and Finn become lovers. But Finn must return to duty, and a string of letters becomes his only connection to the love he left in London.

Review: Dalton and Finn meet when Finn visits Dalton’s shop for a mechanical hand to replace the one he lost during a battlefield accident. Dalton makes living prosthetics that react to the nerves in the remaining limb, while he creates a hand for Finn they become lovers. Finn still has time left to serve in the military but he swears he will be back.

This is a sweet story that brings two men together and brings love their way. Finn lost his hand in an accident and has traveled to Dalton’s shop on the recommendation of a friend, getting a new hand that works is all he wants so he can go back to fighting in the war. Dalton is a bit of a social pariah he creates limbs that can move as though the limb was never lost, when Finn walks through his door he quickly becomes enamored with the young man. Finn has never had a relationship with a man but Dalton introduces him to the delights of male love, but it is also Dalton’s kink that appeals to him.

This story is quite sweet with Finn being the innocent introduced to male love and Dalton falling for the soldier and his love of women’s stockings. The relationship develops from a slight attraction between them with Dalton using their passion for each other as a way for Finn to fine tune his new hands movements, they fall for each other quickly and when Finn returns to war they exchange risquĂ© letters (for the time) that could get them in trouble if discovered. The Steampunk aspect of the story fascinated me with the explanation of existing nerves working with the magnetic points of the prosthetics, the way that Finn is surprised that he still has feeling in the hand and the way that, with patience and practice, the hand will work like the real thing.

I did enjoy this story and thought that Dalton and Finn made a fine couple, they seemed to both share the same type of need for someone else, and they were very indulgent in their kink, which was kinda sexy. Their coming together came suddenly after Finn discovers Dalton’s secret kink, because although you had an idea that Dalton was attracted to Finn you don’t really get that feeling from Finn at first. Their letters to each other made their feelings plain for each other and you pray that nothing will happen that stops Finn from returning to Dalton.

I recommend this to those who love historical Steampunk, first time love, slight kink, and a sweet story with a sexy ending.

Blurb: New York native Henry Richardson needs a change. His boyfriend just dumped him, and his business has fallen victim to the economy. But is jumping on a plane after a surprise phone call taking things too far?

The promise of a new opportunity drags Henry away from the city to a tiny village in the English countryside and an enormous manor house his great-grandmother wants to bequeath him. As an experienced wedding planner, he sees the potential in renovating the dilapidated building and using it for events. All he needs is to find some local businesses to provide the essentials.

That’s how Henry meets Ryan Burgess, the shy but hardworking owner of an organic farm. The spark between them sizzles slowly while work on the house continues, but Ryan is deeply in the closet and unwilling to take the last step. They finally find something that clicks in cricket, something that Henry, a former amateur baseball player, is surprisingly good at. For him, cricket helps bridge the gap between England and New York—but unless Ryan can find something to span the divide between his sexuality and his fear, their relationship doesn’t stand a chance.

Review: Bloody hell! I think this is one of the sweetest love stories I’ve read! Let me tell you it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy. I relaxed into the warm, salt of the earth atmosphere of the Cheddar countryside as I read along Martin’s romance. From the grand old house, to the honest, hard-working farm boy Ryan, I fell in love with this sweet story. Martin paints with words the perfect likeness of the British public house, a place where families gather to share a pint, have a dinner of beef and roasties, and shout over a game of cricket. Also, the history and diversity of the British countryside.
I enjoyed watching Henry regain his confidence, work his way into getting to know the locals, and reconnect with family he had thought long gone. The only thing that could have made this story better would have been a more in-depth description of some of the Stretton House renovations, and that’s only because I’m a This Old House junkie! I highly recommend this wonderful story, but warn you you’ll want to book a flight to the British Isles when you finish!
