Review: I have to say I was pretty damn excited to see that Dreamspinner Press has a new house imprint – Dreamspun Beyond, which is contemporary romance with a paranormal twist. I especially love shape shifter romances. It also helped that I’ve previously enjoyed Ari MacKay’s contributions to the Dreamspun Desires lines. So all in all, it was exciting to read the first book in the Dreamspun Beyond line, Out of the Ashes by Ari MacKay.

I am very please to say that I was not disappointed, from start to finish, this was an engaging and sexy romance, with a super hot shape shifter wolf alpha. I’m a sucker for soul mates/fated mates and the sometimes hard road to their HEA.

Eli Hammond is a strong and sexy alpha wolf, who comes home from a brief getaway to find his pack in disarray. He needs help and it seems that no one is willing to help. That is all except half-elf Arden Gilmarin. As soon as they meet its fate – these guys are meant to be. Well, for Eli anyway, Arden can’t recognize that Eli is his mate but is determined to help the wolf shifter all the same. However, he struggles to come to terms with having a mate and actually being able to accept his mate while helping Eli find his kidnapped pack members.

Eli and Arden have wonderful chemistry together. I love that Eli is a growling, grumpy alpha wolf that needs love in his life, especially after the kidnapping of his pack members. Arden is a total sweetheart, he is totally caring and loving once he comes to terms with his mating. He is a totally positive sort of person that Eli needs in his life. Arden is yin to Eli’s yang.

I am so glad that this is the first book in the Asheville Arcana series, because I absolutely fell in love with Arden’s best friends and confidants, Julian and Whimsy. In a lot of ways Julian and Whimsy are the heroes to this story and I want to hear their stories and hope they find their respective mates and get a sweet and sexy HEA! Too much to ask for? I hope not.

At the Overlook Resort in North Carolina, Liam meets owner Carter Galloway. Review: Before I get started on Breaking Bonds, just a quick note – this is the second in Ari McKay’s charming series the Walker Boys. They are only related in so much that one MC (the Walker boys) from each both books are actually cousins. You don’t necessarily need to go back except for a thoroughly enjoyable story which I liked a lot.

Breaking Bonds is a highly enjoyable story – a little predictable and had me thinking of rating this only 3.5/5 but in the end I couldn’t do it. In the end this is lovely and sweet romance that holds up its own and like the first book it’s a good read for fellow Food Channel addicts.

The story’s MCs are Liam Walker and Carter Galloway. Liam Walker had made his career in New York City in the, forgive the pun, cut throat cooking/restaurant industry. Liam is a world of difference away from Liam. He owns and runs a North Carolina resort. Like Liam is passionate about food, Carter is passionate about hospitality. It’s not difficult to see why the sparks fly when Liam offers Carter some much needed help to get his resort’s restaurant up to scratch. It’s also perfectly charming to see Liam come to a number of realizations about what makes him passionate about his job as he gets to know Carter more.

As I said, I had initially thought the book a tad bit predictable – in so far that I conjured up a few books I’ve read in the past and thought this was a good mix of them. But ultimately, these guys have a wonderful chemistry which is what really stuck with the most from this book. They are definitely the reason why I fell in love with the story, which in the end, isn’t that exactly what an author strives for when they write a story.

Beau Walker, owner of the Barbecue Shack, needs the help of Jake Parnell, his one-time rival and secret crush, in a televised barbecue competition. Beau is a proud man, but the stakes are high, and smart, sexy Jake is his only hope, even if being around Jake reawakens the attraction he’s fought for years.

Jake left his hometown, determined to build a life somewhere his sexuality wouldn’t hurt his family’s restaurant business—and far away from hunky, obstinate Beau Walker. Then his twin, Josh, is killed, and Jake returns to support his brother’s wife and children. Despite his reservations, he agrees to go head-to-head against Beau on national television. Between stress and grief, as well as pride and determination, only one thing is certain—the heat between Beau and Jake extends well beyond the kitchen.

Review: This is my first Ari McKay audio read, although I read this book at the end of last year so I sort of knew what I was getting myself into. However, in saying that, I have the worst memory and actually forgot most of the details except for the BBQ competition which is mentioned in the blurb. Regardless, this was as wonderful to listen to as it had been to read last year (especially since I also gave that a 5 heart rating too).

Beau Walker is owner of the Barbeque Shack. His rival is Jake Parnell, who now runs Parnell’s Pantry and supporting his brother’s family after the death of his twin brother, Josh. Beau had always got along with Josh, but for numerous and probably obvious reason, he and Jake never got along. The main point would be that Beau is out to their small town community while Jake is still firmly in the closet.  But now the time has come that they are going to have to work together, Beau had organized a friendly competition with Josh, which was going to be filmed for television. Now it is Jake who is going to take his brother’s place despite the tension between the guys. The money would be good for the family, the advertising for their businesses would be invaluable, as well as for tourism of their hometown.

I have to admit that I’m totally addicted to watching Food Network, so getting into this book was never a problem. Add onto that the great tension that was crafted between the MCs and then there is explosive attraction between them. I think that this is a book that will easily please many listeners.

Rusty Topsfield lends his voice to this audio and his voice perfectly fits the tone and style of the book. He also happens to be (along with John Solo) one of my favorite narrators in the MM genre. He absolutely gets both Beau and Jake and the crazy sexual tension going on between these guys.

Review: Macon hadn’t meant to listen in, but when he heard Derek talk about his breakup, he felt that he should help the man.  Playing cupid, he started with a sweet letter of encouragement and it has taken on pretty well.  He just hadn’t expected for Derek to answer.

This is a very enjoyable little story about two very sexy guys finding love, with cupid’s hep of course.  I think Ari has given us a pretty good book for this special holiday.  Valentine’s day is not far away so this little story just fit pretty good.  I haven’t read many stories around this day, so it was a nice surprise.  I loved how Macon is so damn shy, but he stepped out of his comfort zone to help another, and got exactly what he needed also.  It is a slow burn romance that ended perfectly.

Although I do have to say these two and their language was a blast, but I am still not going to read Shakespeare any time soon.  It is a very sweet story and I got a kick out of our cutie pies.  It is a bit cheesy but perfect all in all.  I had a lot of fun reading this and look forward to reading many more stories by this amazing author.

Review: Striking Sparks is a fantastic addition to the Dreamspun Desires collection – which has now become a collection I will read without hesitation, regardless of the story’s author. For the most part I have liked or loved each book in the series/collection and Ari McKay’s story of rival cooks does not disappoint.

Blurb: Breaking up with his boyfriend has left English Professor Derek Chandler feeling lonely and down. He begins to think that he just doesn’t have the passion to sustain a long-term relationship — at least until a letter from a mysterious “Cupid” tells him not to lose hope. Intrigued, Derek replies to his anonymous admirer, and they begin a correspondence where Derek discovers he isn’t the only one with doubts about his desirability.

Dr. Macon Pinney has admired his colleague from afar for quite a while, but he only intended his initial note to Derek to offer encouragement. Macon doesn’t believe that outgoing, sociable Derek could ever be interested in the type of quiet, withdrawn man he knows himself to be. Yet when Derek writes back, admitting his worries about never finding a true partner, Macon can’t help but reply, sharing his own feelings from the safety of anonymity.

But will Macon find the courage to step out of the shadows and admit to Derek his identity, or will both men spend the most romantic day of the year alone?

Review: This is an incredibly sweet and an incredibly cute story, although for any postgraduates or academics that are single this Valentines, it might hit a bit close to home.
But it is fun. What this essentially is two men – both academics, at least one is a professor – getting to know each other through anonymous notes. Not exactly, something you hear about often these days and this is what adds to the charm of the story.

Macon is a post-doctoral academic and he is painfully shy despite being a brilliant teacher. He is quick to see kindness but as he puts it, he’s “almost a hermit”. However, he is lonely and uncertain of how to approach people, let alone the man that he is attracted. Macon shares his office with Professor Derek Chandler. He’s a bit down in the dumps because of a recent breakup and with Valentine’s Day approaching, he realises just how lonely he feels.

I’ll suspend my disbelief that these guys who have shared an office space for approximately two years are only just getting to know each other because I know myself and my office mates could not be like that. Then again, I realise that this is meant to demonstrate how socially awkward Macon is.

This is a fun, quick and charming read and purely for the romance.

Blurb: Daryl Greer isn’t a bodyguard. He’s Hercules Security’s “odd-job” specialist, as wild and dangerous, as he is competent. Fiercely independent, he resents his older brother Matthew’s view that he spends his life “playing G.I. Joe.”

When he’s sent to rescue a kidnapped scientist, Dr. Emerson Winfield, from a terrorist organization, Daryl finds himself attracted to the snarky, outspoken man even though Emerson is the kind of rich, successful person Matthew claims could never be interested in a hick like Daryl.

For his part, Emerson doesn’t care about Daryl’s lack of polish; he’s more interested in the incredible chemistry between them. He sets out to prove to Daryl that they can make a relationship work despite their differences.

But Daryl’s defensiveness about his career drives a wedge between them — and if he doesn’t find a way to deal with his issues, Daryl might lose Emerson forever.

Review: Each book in Herc’s Mercs collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. For me there is nothing better than men who carry guns but in this story the fact that these gorgeous men do what they can do to save others. Now they show what hero’s really are.

Daryl has a horrible child hood, caused a lot of trouble, joined the military only to get kicked out, and is now one of Herc’s Merconaries. He goes in and save those who are in need of saving. He can hot-wire a car in seconds, track those that don’t want to be found, annoy his brother to no end and find his ass in hot wire without trying. He is sent in to find a scientist and get his sexy ass back to safety. What he does not expect was to come across a scientist with an attitude and a mouth that doesn’t shut up. Nor does he expect to fall in love.

Emerson is the type that could get the Nobel Prize. However, what he ends up getting is his ass abducted by a terrorist organization and then rescued by one of the sexiest men alive. However, he has so many smart-ass remarks, I am surprised that Daryl hadn’t smacked him, but in the end, it seemed to turn the man on. They have their problems but these two have the strength to fight for their happiness in the end.

This is a fascinating story that I absolutely loved. I had a blast reading it and look forward to reading the next book in this amazing series. It caught my attention from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end. It gave me everything I could possibly want in a story and so much more.

If I could ever get the chance to meet someone like these men, I think I would be in heaven. They are so well described and their hearts can be seen in their eyes. You can usually tell when a story is written with a lot of passion and love, and this is one of them. I loved this book and would recommend reading it.

He is now the owner of a yarn store; Jason loves to give classes on how to knit to the women and men who are interested.

All Tomy Peralta got for Christmas is a broken heart. His boyfriend not only refused to accept his marriage proposal, but he broke up with him in order to pursue his dreams. Can knitting help Tomy put his broken heart back together like it helped Jason when he needed it?

I don’t know about that, but the relationship and friendship that form between our main characters sure will. Their romance develops slowly and sweetly, in the span of a year and it’s very believable. I liked the knitting and the dancing, and I loved how it brought them close together.

The main characters are likeable and supportive, and overall it was a pretty good story. I would’ve liked some tension and maybe a little bit of angst. This story is a little too sweet for my taste and some parts were downright cheesy, but I still enjoyed reading it.

Review: Micah a thirty-six year old Silicon Valley retiree fell in love with the Delany House when the realtor showed it to him. He is spending a large amount of time and money to fix it up. The locals tease him about buying the “haunted” house but he doesn’t believe them at first. Until he starts seeing and hearing things, he can’t explain. Finally, Micah decides to talk to the ghost and learn who he is.

This a cute little story. Micah and Richard are so sweet together. Even as a short, this story gave me a warm happy feeling at the end.

Blurb: Boston in 1888 is quite urbane, but unfortunately for Gil Porter, that isn’t the same thing as being understanding.

When his sexuality is exposed by the scandalous suicide of his lover, Gil is exiled to the small town of Mercy, Texas, by his domineering father, George, who believes life on Vernon Porter’s ranch will cure Gil of his “unnatural” desires. Grieving and ashamed, Gil is determined to keep his distance from everyone until he can return home. To his surprise, he finds acceptance at Bent Oak Ranch, especially from Matt Grayson, the handsome son of the ranch foreman.

Knowing he must fight his attraction to Matt, Gil courts a local girl, but an unexpected encounter with Matt leads to his discovery of Matt’s feelings for him. Torn between Matt and his desire to be “normal,” between returning to his old life and building a new one in Texas, Gil is faced with a choice—appeasing his father or becoming the man Matt knows he can be.

Review: Gil has been sent to his uncle’s ranch in Texas by his father after his male lover commits suicide. The father thinks that ranch life will cure him of his gayness and make him a “proper man.” Gil has so many self-esteem issues mostly caused by his father. The reaction of his father and those he thought were friends had Gil believing he is unnatural. Determined to do what he has to be “normal” Gil does what he thinks he should be doing and that is to ignore his growing attraction to Matt.

Gil changes over the course his stay at the ranch. He started off as arrogant and distant and slowly starts to mature and grow. Matt and Gil build a friendship all while hiding the feeling they are each having about the other. Matt is slowly falling in love with Gil, and Gil is doing his best not to fall in love with Matt. It comes as a shock when both realize they are gay.

They were hiding from each other so much that it was an accident they figured even figured it out. They have a passionate moment, and Gil screws it up by saying it can never happen again. Again with his “normal” life idea that has been drilled into his head.

Matt and Gil go through a lot. Matt tries so hard to get it through Gil’s head that there is nothing wrong with him. But the emotional damage Gil’s father has dished out over the years has nearly ruined Gil. It makes it hard for him to see outside the narrow box his father has drawn. It takes almost losing Matt completely, to finally get his ass in gear and make his own choices to be happy.

So it’s 1888, in Texas, on a ranch. Where still today there are issues with gay rights. I found it a little hard to believe that Gil would find a ranch that was OK with Gil and Matt being together. I most definitely blame my own preconceived notions, but it made it very hard for me to get into the book.

The writing is as good quality as I have come to expect from this author, I just could not get pulled in. I am sure people will disagree with me and that is perfectly fine. This book has left me in the middle, I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it either.

Review: I am amazed by the gifts that many people have to tell you a story. Ari is one of those gifted authors. She gives you an amazing story with incredible characters that you can believe in. This story was amazing. I love the fact that a man gave everything to his country and was still willing to give his life to protect someone he loves. Although when he took the job, it sure wasn’t because of love. Cade was an ex-marine and mercenary till he saved a fellow marine from getting hit by a car, but got himself injured. His leg had been crushed and reconstructed so now he he’s the owner of Hercules Security, which provides the best bodyguards in the business.

Cade doesn’t do fieldwork anymore – until a challenge is issued to him by wealthy Kate Morgan, who wants her “bookish” grandson protected from a stalker. She insists on having the very best bodyguard available, and that is Cade himself. He was expecting this nerdy looking geek but what he got took his breath away. Although his first contact with Jude did not go so well. He had punched the man in the face when Jude made the mistake of calling him a coward. Once Jude apologized, he realized that everything that was happening was in fact dangerous. Jude’s ex-boyfriend was a psycho and dangerous, Jude was a pain in the ass, and Cade was falling for him.

Jude had always felt that everyone in his life was trying to control him and to suffocate him. He wanted to do everything on his own, but when he made the mistake of calling Cade a coward, was when he felt like he was at the lowest point in life. He was terrified of what was happening, terrified of the man standing in front of him would be hurt because of him. He knew that Cade would give his life to protect him and that might just be the worst feeling ever. However what he felt for Cade that was growing stronger each day made him jump for joy and cheer. Now all they had to do was get past the dangers and past the manipulating grandmother. She proves to be even more manipulative than once expected.

This is one amazing book and I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on the next one in this series. It should prove to be one heck of a great fine for my library. If you love hot and sexy men, tender moments, spicy conflict, military men, mercenaries, bodyguards and a bit of danger than this is a book that you will want to read. It caught my attention from the first sentence and kept it all the way to the end. This book will give you what you are looking for I can guarantee it. You will love it just like I do.

Blurb: Noah Coleman doesn’t do casual relationships. After losing his partner, Jeff, and raising their daughter Emily by himself, he’s not used to thinking of anyone in a romantic way. But when he moves back to Chicago and meets former classmate Andy Lane again, Andy somehow manages to worm his way into Noah and Emily’s lives – and into Noah’s heart. Noah watches Emily and Andy grow closer, but Andy doesn’t seem to want anything more from Noah than friendship. What’s a father to do when he realizes balancing love and parenthood isn’t as easy as he’d always thought?

Review: A delightful story about love a second time around.  Noah is a man grieving the loss of his partner while now raising their child.  When Andy Lane enters his life, he doesn’t think he’s ready for a relationship, but Lane’s quiet and non-threatening presence breaks through Noah’s grief and he begins to care. Feeling that the sentiment is not returned, he ends his lukewarm relationship with Andy, which depresses both men.

Once Noah realizes his mistake via how heartbroken his daughter is by Andy’s absence, he swallows his pride and goes to talk with Andy, which will allow both men to talk about their misunderstandings and begin to build a relationship with each other.  The Epilogue of the story explains the title, which just makes the story all the sweeter.

The characters of Noah, Andy and Emily are well-developed and the reader roots for not just the two men to be together but also for the three of them to build a family with each other.  The power to love is infinite and often death is tragic, but that doesn’t mean that love will never ever be there again. This story is about family, trust and how love can heal anything.
