Lucky

by

Garrett Leigh

Dominic Ramos is a Premiership football player with a secret. There are no trophies for being gay in his game. Locked into his rep as the meanest defender on the pitch, keeping his secret is soul-crushing, but love has no place in his sport, even if his soft heart craves it.

Lucky Coleman is on his knees when he meets a man with more money than sense. It’s a Grindr hook-up for cash, not a love match, but dreaming of his desperate, kind eyes earns a place amongst his numerous bad habits.

Meeting once was risky, twice pushes Dom’s courage to the limit. Losing Lucky seems inevitable, but his tight grip on his image counts for nothing when Lucky starts to fall.

Catching him could cost Dom everything, but if he can set his heart free, getting Lucky long term might be a risk worth taking.

Soul to Keep

(Rented Heart 02)
by

Garrett Leigh

Recovering addict Jamie Yorke has returned to England from California. With no home or family to speak of, he sticks a pin in a map and finds a small town in the Derbyshire Peak District. Matlock Bath is a quiet place—he just needs to get there, keep his head down, and stay clean. Simple, right? Until a chance meeting on the flight home alters the course of his so-called life forever.

Ex-Army medic Marc Ramsey is recovering from life-changing combat injuries while pulling nights as a trauma specialist at the local hospital. Keeping busy is a habit he can’t quit, but when Jamie—so wild and beautiful—bursts into his life, working himself into the ground isn’t as compelling as it used to be.

Marc falls hard, but chaos lurks behind Jamie’s fragile facade. He’s winning his battle against addiction, but another old foe is slowly consuming him. Both men have weathered many storms, but the path to the peace they deserve might prove the roughest ride yet.

Junkyard Heart by Garrett Leigh

Title: Junkyard Heart

Series: Porthkennack 07

Author: Garrett Leigh

Genre: Contemporary

Length: Novel (195pgs)

ISBN: 978-1-62649-549-4

Publisher: Riptide Publishing (4th December 2017)

Heat Level: Moderate

Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

Reviewer: Aerin

Blurb: Tired of the London rat race and the heartbreak that comes with it, photographer Jas Manning returns to Porthkennack, the Cornish seaside town where he spent every childhood summer on his father’s farm. Resigned to year-round rain, wind, and homemade jam, he’s sorely unprepared for the impact that artsy carpenter Kim Penrose has on his heart.

Kim’s free-loving reputation precedes him, and he’s as generous with his inked-up body as he is with his time. The sex is hot, the easy friendship even better, and Jas’s time with him building his family’s new farmhouse canteen is everything Jas was missing in his empty city life.

But Kim’s carefree existence isn’t as simple as it appears. He’s worked hard to vanquish his demons and build his dreams, but the devil on his shoulder is ruthless, and when it comes to call, their happy bubble bursts like it was never there at all. The canteen opening looms, but Kim is gone in more ways than one, and it’s down to Jas to shore up Kim’s soul and convince him that he deserves his place in Jas’s heart.

Review: I’ve admitted long ago that Garrett Leigh is like crack to me, but unlike some addicts, I don’t have any desire to get clean. I love Leigh’s brand of angst, love how it rips my heart and makes me bleed, love feeling the angst like a physical blow while I fear it at the same time. Junkyard Heart is definitely Leigh’s creation and I feel like I could tell who wrote it even if I had to guess.

We know Kim from the previous Porthkennack book written by Garrett Leigh. Kim is a bisexual man whose open relationship with his long-time girlfriend made me skeptical about reading his book. Kim is battling his own demons in the form of alcohol addiction and a sometimes fragile mental health. His need for Jas runs bone-deep; Jas a that one person that Kim needs to have in his life in whatever way possible.

Jas has been a player all his life, a serial cheater who has always dated both men and women at the same time. That is until karma caught up to him, and the person Jas fell in love with and has dedicated 5 years of his life to was revealed as a married man. Jai’s broken heart drove him all the way to Porthkennack, where his father, step-mother and brothers all live. Jas believes he’s no relationship material and he’s done falling in love with men or women both, but his chemistry with Kim turns his world upside down. Staying away from Kim is simply not possible, no matter how complicated their relationship is.

I loved Jas and Kim together, their relationship and chemistry is intense and passionate, pretty much everything I could hope for. What didn’t work for me, and the real reason this book only gets 4 hearts from me, is Lena and the weird part she plays in Jas and Kim’s relationship. I get who she is to Kim, I understand their friendship, but…. why the fuck would Jas desire to see Lena and Kim fuck? I didn’t feel like Jas and Kim’s relationship had any room for a third, even if that third person is only hypothetical. I disliked that Lena watched Jas and Kim fuck, and it creeped me out that she kissed Jas’s head in the middle of it. I was half expecting her to guide his dick as well! *Lena did not have any actual sex with either of them and there was no cheating!*

Aside from the awkwardness that is Lena, I love everything about this book! Great read!

How do you find a home when your heart is in ashes?

With their mum dead and their father on remand for her murder, Leo Hendry and his little sister, Lila, have nothing in the world but each other. Broken and burned, they’re thrust into the foster care system. Leo shields Lila from the fake families and forced affection, until the Poulton household is the only place left to go.

Charlie de Sousa is used to other kids passing through the Poulton home, but there’s never been anyone like his new foster brother. Leo’s physical injuries are plain to see, but it’s the pain in his eyes that draws Charlie in the most.

Day by day, they grow closer, but the darkness inside Leo consumes him. He rejects his foster parents, and when Charlie gets into trouble, Leo’s attempt to protect him turns violent. When Leo loses control, no one can reach him—except Charlie. He desperately needs a family—a home—and only Charlie can show him the way.

Reviewer: Aerin

Review: For me Garrett Leigh is the author I go to when I need a dark, angsty read, because she never fails to deliver. It takes a lot of talent to write angst with taste’ and without melodrama, but Leigh knocks it out of the park every single time. Strays is a beautiful and dark love story with a constant edge of danger that is anticipated but not overwhelming.

The focus stays on Nero and Lenny, and the slow and steady chemistry that’s building between them, regardless of the element of danger. Nero is dark and broody and remains mysterious for the better part of the book. We know that he’s been to jail and that he’s missing a finger, but it takes a while for Nero to unveil that part of his past. Nero’s nights are plagued by nightmares, and he spends his days trying to keep people away; nothing screams ‘stay the fuck away from me’ more than Nero’s dark looks and constantly pissed off mood.

Lenny is a scared little rabbit when he comes to hide in Nero’s living room and restaurant; a deranged stalker has been tormenting Lenny for a long time now, and it doesn’t look like the cops will do anything to stop him. Staying with Nero does Lenny a world of good, because little by little Nero brings Lenny out of his shell. The chemistry between them is slow burn and delicious as hell, and the sex is much anticipated throughout the book. The sex, when it happens, is steamy and passionate and emotionally fulfilling.

What I loved the most about Lenny and Nero together was the reassurance I got that they’re a solid couple; nothing about their relationship read as fleeting to me, just a sweet affair that weathered the storm and was made stronger because of it. If you haven’t read Misfits yet don’t hesitate to do it, because not only is it an amazing book, but the guys make a lot of appearances in this book and play a very important supportive role.

I hope for more books in this series, but if this is the end, I’m perfectly content.

Review: This book has been a surprise from the very beginning, because it didn’t start with Rupert and Jodi meeting each other and falling in love. This book starts with an established couple who has been happy for the past 4 years. Rupert and Jodi are everything to each other. That happy couple you can’t help but envy. By the end of the prologue, Rupert and Jodi’s world crumbles around them as Jodi fights for his life and Rupert prepares himself for the struggles ahead.

The next few chapters alternate between Jodi’s recovery and amnesia, which was heartbreaking, and flashbacks from the time Jodi and Rupert met and fell in love. I can’t tolerate flashbacks at any time, and god knows I tried! So I skimmed through the flashbacks and devoured the present. What a complete contrast, isn’t it?

This book was painful, especially when we get Rupert’s POV. Because it hurts so much when the person Rupert loves more than life itself looks at him like he’s a stranger. This book is full of feels, emotions, and angst (although not as bad as it could have been) and once the flashbacks stopped completely (after 10 chapters or so) I couldn’t put this book down.

I have a weakness for books with characters who suffer from illnesses/disabilities, be they temporary or permanent, and this has become one of my favorites. I think my absolute favorite thing was the fact that we get Jodi’s POV throughout his amnesia and the recovery period that follows. It was absolutely fascinating to get a glimpse of how Jodi thinks and how he feels, because it made the difference between grudgingly accepting his condition and being absolutely fascinated by it.

There’s also the duality of feeling Rupert’s angst, desolation, depression and sadness while understanding and making sense of Jodi’s actions and the reasons he’s acting the way he is. Absolutely fabulous and the best kind of mind-fuck, one I thoroughly enjoyed! To make everything even more perfect, Rupert’s endearment for Jodi boyo made me melt into a puddle of goo.

I don’t want to give any spoilers by telling you how Jodi’s amnesia progresses. But don’t make any assumptions, because I assure you this will not go the direction you’re thinking. Rupert and Jodi do get their HEA, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Any book that ends like this deserves to be read:

“I fucking love you, boyo, you know that?” Jodi looked up and grinned.

“Course I do, knobhead. That’s why I made it this far.”

“Knobhead?”

“Yeah . . . knobhead, my whole fucking world, whatever I call you, it all means the same, ’cause I love you too, Rupe. More than you’ll ever know.”

Between Ghosts

by

Garrett Leigh

In 2003, journalist Connor Regan marched through London to add his voice to a million others, decrying the imminent invasion of Iraq. Eight months later, his brother, James, was killed in action in Mosul.

Three years on, Connor finds himself bound for Iraq to embed with an elite SAS team. He sets his boots on the ground looking for closure and solace—anything to ease the pain of his brother’s death. Instead he finds Sergeant Nathan Thompson.

Nat Thompson is a veteran commander, hardened by years of combat and haunted by the loss of his best friend. Being lumbered with a civilian is a hassle Nat doesn’t need, and he vows to do nothing more than keep the hapless hack from harm’s way.

But Connor proves far from hapless, and too compelling to ignore for long. He walks straight through the steel wall Nat’s built around his heart, and when their mission puts him in mortal danger, Nat must lay old ghosts to rest and fight to the death for the only man he’s ever truly loved.

Review: It’s been a long time since I’ve read any military MM books, especially ones that are set in a war zone. I knew this wasn’t going to be a traditional romance because that wouldn’t be very believable given the circumstances. But I love Garrett Leigh and so I HAD to read this! I’m so happy I did, because this was a very lovely book, realistic, and a definite eye-opener when it comes to our troops and their experiences while deployed.

Connor is a journalist who lost his brother, James, 3 years prior to the events taking place, while his brother was deployed with the British Army. There’s a lot of confusion surrounding the exact circumstances of his brother’s death, and Connor feels compelled to go give voice to those brave soldiers who sacrifice themselves for their county’s safety. Connor is still brokenhearted, and he hopes this experience will also bring him some closure and ease the pain the loss of his brother brought.

Nat Thompson is a veteran commander, the person in charge of his elite SAS team, a much respected person and a wonderful friend. Nat lost his best friend (Pogo) and team member 3 years ago, and he still hasn’t recovered from the loss and the guilt and responsibility he feels over Pogo’s death.

Taking a civilian journalist under his wing and keeping him safe at all cost is the last thing he wants to do and a hassle his team doesn’t need, but Connor is not the wallflower Nat expects him to be. There’s this chemistry and sexual tension between Connor and Nat at all times from the first second they met, which I absolutely loved.

Nat’s bisexuality was well-known among his close friends and teammates, but it was something Nat was keeping quiet about outside hit close-knit group. Connor is everything Nat likes in a man, and he can’t get him out of his hear, no matter how hard he tries to do just that.

This book isn’t full of romantic dates and slow love-making, because this wasn’t the time or the place for something like that. Instead, Nat and Connor have a lot of stolen moments, and fast and furious sex, and the need for secrecy makes it all so much more intense. It was exactly what I expected and it fit with the story setting.

When dealing with extremist forces, things don’t always go as planned, which I suspected ahead of time, but I honestly didn’t think Connor was going to have such a big part in solving the mystery. When it all went to shit and Connor was in mortal danger, things got a little weird for me and certainly very confusing.

I hope I’m not giving away any spoilers here, but when the time to save Connor and extract him from the enemy hands came, there were over 20 soldiers against 4 or 5 enemies. And somehow, they all mysteriously vanished or something, because the showdown happened between Connor, Nat and the #1 enemy.

Of course, they almost died, yada-yada and all that drama, and the whole time I couldn’t stop wondering where the rest of the extraction team went. I was a little disappointed with how that whole scene played out. It was the deciding factor in my rating of this book.

There were plenty of things to love, like the banter and friendship between teammates and comrades, the behind-the-scenes glimpses in the everyday lives of our heroes (which sometimes are funny and heart-warming, while other times they are completely heartbreaking), the relationship between Connor and Nat, and definitely that beautiful HEA.

Great book!
