Listener’s Remains

by

L. Julia

Gillen Lynch has a complicated relationship with his brother-in-law, Eduardo Sanchez. Gillen hasn’t mentioned his attraction to Eduardo; Eduardo hasn’t mentioned he’s a mind reader. Betrayed by the deception and mortified by his attraction to his sister’s spouse, Gillen decides to take it out on Eduardo by killing him.

Murdering a mind reader is no easy task, but this isn’t the first time Gillen has killed. His other victims didn’t mean anything to him, and they definitely didn’t use their dying breaths to copy their minds into Gillen’s head. Now, with no barriers between them, Gillen can’t stop Eduardo from digging up the secrets he’d hoped to take to his grave. He’s scared, powerless, and unprepared to face the fallout of his actions as he flees from both the cops and a group of mysterious pursuers who are as connected to Eduardo as he is.

With his pursuers closing in on him and Eduardo threatening to tear him apart from the inside, Gillen must overcome his self-hatred and take back his mind. If he can’t, he’ll be at the mercy of the man who has every right to want him dead.

Blurb: Paramedic Hayden Kinsella is single and the life of the party. He likes driving fast and saving lives, and he doesn’t do relationships—he does hookups. Except he wouldn’t hook up with copper Matt Deakin if he were the last guy on the planet. Hayden thinks the feeling is mutual . . . until clearing the air leads to a drunken one-night stand, which leads to something neither of them was expecting: a genuine connection.

Police officer Matt Deakin moved to Townsville to take care of his elderly grandfather. In between keeping an eye on Grandad, renovating his house, and the demands of his job, he somehow finds himself in a tentative relationship with Hayden and very slowly gets to know the damaged guy beneath the happy-go-lucky persona.

But the stressors of shift work, fatigue, and constant exposure to trauma threaten to tear Hayden and Matt apart before they’ve even found their footing together. In the high-pressure lives of emergency services workers, it turns out it’s not the getting together part that’s hard, it’s the staying together.

Review: Hayden and Matt didn’t really have a good start. Matt had given Hayden a speeding ticket and Hayden had flirted with him. Now every time they came across Hayden kept sneering at him and talking crap about him. That is until one night and they figured out that their actions had been taken wrong. Now here he was slowly getting to know the man.

Matt had thought that Hayden had flirted with him to get out of a ticket. Had he known that the man had liked him, things would have gone a little smoother. Then after several incidents going wrong, Hayden had lost his place in the world. It was going to take Matt some time, but he would get the smart ass back in place.

At first I will admit that this story didn’t really do anything for me. It has humor in it but it was mixed with a tone that didn’t do it any justice. However once I got into it, the story actually got better. I will tell you to have tissues waiting because there are some pretty strong feelings going on. Not all of those feelings have to do with their love life, but life itself. The characters are strong but I didn’t see an alpha character with them. They were more on an equal level.

I was actually quite surprised and very entertained once I got into it. I didn’t much care for the cover though, it just didn’t do the story right. It has an even pace to it but the story itself was a little dry.

Overall the story was pretty good. I can’t say that it will be read more than once though. I didn’t get a chance to read the first book, but I will be checking it out later.

Blurb: Embrace the danger.

Sean Rush is an adrenaline junkie. That’s why he was in the Army, why he steals and races classic muscle cars . . . and why he can’t stay away from bad boy Ryker, a Havoc Motorcycle Club lieutenant. Fortunately, Ryker can’t seem to stay away from Sean—he’s spent the last eight months breaking into Sean’s apartment and stealing into his bed, leaving Sean physically satisfied but increasingly restless.

Sean has always avoided relationships. He likes to come and go without being controlled. And Ryker is possibly the most controlling man he’s ever known. Still, he finds that he wants more from Ryker than their silent nighttime encounters.

Then one of Sean’s thefts goes bad, and Ryker’s protective instincts kick into overdrive. He takes Sean to the Havoc compound, determined to keep him safe. But Sean’s past threatens the safety of Havoc—and everything Ryker holds dear. Worse, Ryker’s hiding secrets of his own. Soon it’s obvious that the adrenaline rush can’t keep them together anymore. But maybe love can.

Review: Sean has done quite a bit of things that would be considered bad, but he always looks out for his friends. Stealing cars is what he is good at and what he craves, although he is damn good at fixing them too. Stealing cars and racing them seems to be his main drug of choice. He went in to the army to stay out of jail and lost one of his best friends to it. Now he tried to get out of that life, but his other best friend just can’t seem to stop. So he does it to help, but it almost gets him killed.

Ryker was also damn good at stealing cars and running with the Havoc motorcycle club. They seem to be a bad club to get into but then you see the good they are doing as well. Protecting those that need to be protected. Now he needs to protect the one man he loves.

I am not even sure where to go with this review. I can’t say that I like it or even that I hate it. It is a very long drawn out story that just didn’t keep my attention like it should have. It starts off a bit confusing and just kept on going. It is a very well told story but to me it had so much in it that it did the exact opposite of what it should have done. I liked Ryker but didn’t really care for Sean at all. His head is so far up his ass that I am surprised he could breathe. He does everything to protect his best friend, but his best friend needs his ass kicked to the curb. I didn’t like the way the whole book went.

It took so long to even get to the love part of the story that I wasn’t sure it would ever get there. If it had been written with the positive of the club instead of the negative it might have been a better read. When I started reading the book I was hoping that it was more like protection, body guard and kicking ass, but then I realized it was focused more on the idiots stealing cars. Total let down if I say so. The action in the story was not even a big impact in the story.

I am sorry that the whole book was just disappointing to me and I can’t say that I look forward to reading the next book in fear that it will come off the same way. We will see how it goes though. For now I am sorry to say that this book was not for me.

Review: Love and Murder:

Jake is a small town lawyer with his own firm. He’s in a relationship with Noah, the man he cheated on his ex with. There is a lot of bringing up the past with his his ex wife and ex lovers coming into the picture from time to time. I wondered if Jake actually knew how to be faithful to anyone. A murder has Frank hiring him to represent him in a murder trial. This case was wild with two other murders happening a long the way. Twists and turns abound as the killer or killers are tracked down as well as Jake meeting a new love interest that turns out to be someone he knows but doesn’t remember at first. I was disappointed we never found out who killed Hannah.

Love and Pain:

This book takes place a year after book one. Xavier, the FBI agent from book one, and Jake have moved in together and are trying to make a go of things. Between Jake not coming to grips with certain aspects of his past and Xavier keeping things from Jake the two have some disagreements from time to time. A job opportunity presents itself to Jake that may not be what it seems and the past comes back to haunt Jake.

I honestly enjoyed both these stories. There was no shortage of action, drama and suspense that seemed to follow Jake at all turns. Danger is around every corner and even the heroes are injured from time to time. The things that kept me from loving the first book was all the cheating that was brought up. It was obvious to me that Jake was never ready to commit to all those other relationships so it confused me as to why he married Elena and committed to the others. The second and most upsetting thing for me was all the sentences with missing words or words that were added that did not need to be there. This made for constantly having to reread sentences to understand what the story was trying to say at times. Not to mention Jake’s name was used when it should have been Xavier’s.

Review: Connor and Shawn have survived being shot and stabbed, but it looks like a disease just might kill them both. Saving a tribe from a mad man, leads to a kiss on the cheek by a sweet older woman who just happes to have a major disease that doesn’t have a good chance at survival. Now they will have to fight an unseen battle to survive.

This book showed quite a bit of change from the previous books and I must say that it was better then I had expected. I had gone in to it not really wanting to even start it, but I have always finished a complete series without giving up, well mostly. The characters have grown quite a bit and their passion shows in it. The dialog worked better with this book and I was quite surprised by it.

I can’t say that I would read it more than once though. I am not really a fan of series that follow the same characters and there are probably only a few that have written it the way it keeps a readers attention. They still don’t come off the way their past shows them to be. They don’t really come off a military or any other black op members. That doesn’t really do a story if they don’t grow more in their stages of life. The love they have for each other however has grown quite a bit and is more believable then ever.

I am still not a fan of these books and can’t say that I would recommend them. However after this story the author might change my mind. We will just have to wait and see.

The challenges continue when a Shadow Unit undercover op in Bangladesh to shut down the pipeline of terrorists being smuggled into the UK draws Shawn and Connor into a web of lies and deceit from a man hell bent on exacting revenge on the two soldiers – demanding a life for a life. Will Connor and Shawn survive? Or will the jungle become their final resting place?

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Connor’s past comes back to haunt him even though it was not his doing. The child of the man who had killed his family wanted revenge. And the brother of his target was also coming for them. Connor and Shawn barely have time to recoup from their last mission to only end up in trouble again.

There is quite a pattern with these stories. There is no shock and no surprise to them. There is no heat to this story nor the guys. There is no passion in the sex scenes which is boring as hell. The guys are not developing the way they should. In fact the story should have excelled from the last two books but there is no change in the way the story is told. It is monotone to the point that one would fall a sleep. I have trouble getting through the story. Now I will admit that this one was a tad bit better then the others but not by much.

I was quite disappointed in this book and have trouble with even wanting to read them. The story feels rushed and dull. There is so much potential but it hurts the heart to see them fail. I am sorry but I doubt that I would bother mentioning to anyone else to read.

Reviewer: Prime

Review: Clare London is not unfamiliar author to me – I’ve read a few of her books in the past, although 72 Hours is the first audio book I’ve heard from the same author. However, I will say from the outset that this book for me was not as enjoyable as other books. Yet, I will also say that the narration by Michael Pauley really did add to the book in a way that kept me going. This is the first time I’ve heard Pauley’s narration (that I can think of anyway) and I really enjoyed his tone and inflection throughout the story.

As for the book itself, Tanner and Niall work for some sort of shady, MI6 type of agency and they are currently in all sorts of trouble. Their affair ended in a mess when their personal life spilled over into a mission that they were working together and left their reputations in tatters. Tanner decided that it was best to all but fall off the face of the earth, while Niall continued. When the agency is compromised, and Niall is need of a safe house, it is Tanner who is meant to be the knight in shining armour.

While I found the book enjoyable and the story well-paced for the most part, I know that there were a couple things that really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. For the most part these guys took miscommunication and childish antics to a level that makes me wonder how the hell these guys made it as secret agents and successfully pulled off missions before they got together. One thing that

I thought was pulled off well was the writing from Tanner’s POV – because despite my earlier criticism it was great to see him grow by the end of the book, because let’s face it he was a bit whiny at the start of the book. I will admit, I really liked their chemistry and it really worked. Unfortunately, though, for me there was a lot of unnecessary drama and a predictable villain that detracted from the storyline, which overall was really fun.

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Recovering from a previous op and now about to set out on a new one. One that brings someone from the past back full force. Shawn’s old lover and boss from the CIA, but he doesn’t trust someone so cold. Then Connor accidentally kills a child when going after his father. It leaves Connor questioning his whole existence. Now they are going after another, and with Julian in the mix things are bound to get well you can guess.

Well at least they were changing who gets hurt in this book. It is about the same characters as in book one. No imagination needed to figure out who the bad guy is and there is no surprises. This book was better with the plot, but it felt like it was just as rushed as the first one. There was absolutely no spark of life coming from the book. The cover was dull and not a bit like the two soldiers who have the past that they do. Shawn believes that Julian is bad news but then he basically drops it in away. The whole story had potential but it failed to deliver.

The story felt very off and dull. I did not connect with the characters and didn’t see any true heat. Even the sex scenes were boring to me. The writing never really changes. I hate to admit that this book was poorly done and did not a thing for me. It will be put in the never to read again column. I truly can’t say if I would recommend this book to anyone. We will see if it gets any better in the next book.

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Connor and Shawn were not only teammates but lovers. They were part of an anti-terrorism task force sent in to for the worst. It took them into dangerous situations and could cost them their lives. Although they have not done what is about to be done. Shawn was going to have to get real close and personal with the target.

Even though Shawn gave his conscent for the sex between him and Jae, to me it was still rape. I started reading this before I remembered I have read it once before and ditched the book. It has drug use, which we knew about from the warning on the blurb, so it might be trigger to some. The story did have potential but the way the author took it made the book bottom out for me. It was more drug and sex, then actual story. It felt like you were being dropped into the team without warning. It actually felt like the actual story was just a back drop to what was really going on.

The first thing I noticed was the cover, it doesn’t match the guys at all, so that was a bad sign. Now a drug, arms dealer who deals with death would not take some guy off the streets to back him up, so that was another sign. This book was definitely lacking in background and major information that would lead up into the actual story. Then there is the big boss who is just going to let his man go in there and get high as a kite to get the bad guy, that is a big NO. There was definitely no research done into black ops or at least something believeable. I couldn’t even get a good read on the actual case.

Overall this book is going into my never to read again folder. It was lacking so much to make it a good story. The characters needed a bit more edge to even make them real to me. It did show a true drug addict’s reaction though so I will give that part props. This story felt rushed and not well thought out. I hate to admit that this book was definitely not my kind of book.

Torn and Frayed

(The Gabriel Church Tales 02)
by

Rodd Clark

Conscience isn’t something all people are born with…

Gabriel Church is a portrait in contrast. It would be easy to get lost in his pale-blue eyes, ache with the need to feel the strength of his masculine frame. He appears to be nothing but animal and instinct. The only people who know the full depth of that truth are dead, murdered, or two thousand miles away.

Gabe is a serial killer, and for the first time in his life, he has more on his mind than his own survival. This time he is running from Seattle to protect the only person he thinks innocent in his laundry list of crime and murder: Christian Maxwell, his biographer and unexpected lover.

Drawn to a place he never thought to return, Gabe finds new and different realities. Realities that insist he let go of his tragic past, those incredible perceptions of God, and his own divinity. He must open his eyes to what the love of a good man can do to heal a broken soul.

Blurb: Someone is trying to kill Marc Foster.

Attempted poisoning was bad enough, but when the would-be killer messes with the brakes on Marc’s precious Porsche, the art dealer admits he needs help. He just wasn’t expecting help to be quite so dark and sexy.

Royce Karras loves his job at Ward Security. He’s making up for a lifetime of bad decisions and a bloody past he’d rather forget. But Marc isn’t the spoiled rich boy he thought he’d be protecting. Sticking close to Marc as his “boyfriend” gives Royce insight into his toxic family, but it also reveals a brilliant, compassionate man who completely disarms Royce. Against his better judgment, Royce finds himself falling.

But can they find a way to make it work when Royce’s past threatens to tear their lives apart? Their future hinges on a lost Renaissance painting, six Bichon Frises, and a pornographic Robin Hood.

No worries, right?

Review: According to the blurb someone is trying to kill Marc. However once the cameras and bodyguard Royce are in place there is no long term investigation which shocked me. The most I read was Royce making sure the house was secure and keeping a watch out at night. He only checked the cameras once. Most of the book was centered on Royce and Marc’s relationship which started out of the blue.

There was a secondary plot as Royce comes face to face with his past and has to deal with that aspect as well. This book was not as good a read for me as the first two were. It almost seemed like it was rushed in certain places and filled in at the last minute in others. That’s not to say it was not a good addition to the series because it was.

All in all it was a good read.

Publisher: Jackson Marsh (June 12, 2018)

Blurb: What if you could prove that the greatest Gothic horror novel of all time was a true story?

Dexter and Morgan meet on their eighteenth birthday. The attraction is instant but confusing. As they deal with coming out, they are bound together by more than first love.

Both keep diaries, and each has the same goal – to prove that Stoker didn’t write ‘Dracula’. They are convinced that Harker, Van Helsing and the others existed and wrote the novel’s journals themselves. If Dex and Morgan can prove it, they will blow the lid off the vampire myth: Dracula existed.

As the two teenagers fall in love, so they fall into an adventure as thrilling as it is dangerous. They are being watched, and someone is willing to kill to stop them from making ‘The Stoker Connection.’

The Stoker Connection is an MM Romance treasure hunt thriller. It draws on the original text of ‘Dracula’, but it is not a story about vampires. It is a story of first love and the power of friendship. Sometimes funny, it is an intriguing and honest account compiled from Dex and Morgan’s original diaries.

Review: I loved this story. It was different from any other I’ve read. Dex and Morgan’s journal entries showed an insight that was unique and refreshing as we get how both of them feel on different things happening in their lives. I found it interesting that both were born on the same date but that is not the only thing. There are many coincidences that cannot be discounted between the two.

The way the story is told is refreshing and invigorating. The story leads Dex and Morgan on an adventure to discover what they feel for one another, as well as what is truth and what is not regarding Dracula and the accounts that have been documented and told from various accounts.

It was fascinating to see the journey culminate in anticipation of what they do and don’t find, plus the element of danger as someone does not want them digging any further than they have. I was captivated from start to finish. I loved the entire book.

Fantastic story and highly recommended.
