Review: The previous week I read all twenty-five stories this package contains. It was a long reading, but it was only a very interesting one. Twenty-five authors joined this event and in my opinion, each and every one of them made a great job with the theme of this collection.

And that brings me comment on the word “collection.” This is not an anthology. The stories in anthologies have a resembles that makes you feel as if you’re reading the same story over and over again, simply written from a different point of view. I didn’t feel that while reading this collection. Not one single story made me think “oh not again”. The variety of the genres was quite amazing. I was surprised to see from historical romance to sci-fi and futuristic. I felt in the end that this was a great accomplishment, and while I have no idea what the previous year’s collection was like, this was definitely worth reading.

So, while my rating for each individual story varied, I felt the entirety of them a well deserved ♥♥♥♥3.5 Hearts. If you are so inclined, I totally recommend the entire package. One thing is certain; it will keep you entertained for a long while.

Blurb: Halcyon Hush is a harsh town in an even harsher world. The apocalypse left behind a scattering of tough survivors who are finally starting to rebuild their lost civilization.

There is no room for men loving men, not when the population needs to grow. So Doctor Ira Ellis does his duty, lives his life if not quite content, then at least quietly. He has his work, he has his small home. What he doesn’t have is the strength to resist temptation when it comes, in the shape of Doctor Richard McLean.

Review: The world’s population has been decimated. The feeling of desolation and despair still lingers even after two centuries. What remains of humans is a harsh race, forced to do unspeakable things in order to survive. After two hundred years, Halcyon Hush is one of the few cities standing. Battling raids of rogues who do not aim at prosperity rather live in the present and aim to destroy. Halcyon Hush still stands and grows.

People are obligated to father at least two children so that humanity will have a chance to survival. Men like Ira are not exactly hunted or illegal anymore, but neither are they looked upon with a tolerant eye. Before they used to be instantly killed; now they are simply banished. The notion of being with another man has never crossed Ira’s mind. He craves it, oh yes, like a man in desert craves water, but he’s resigned himself to a life without a man’s touch. Until Richard comes along…

Am I conveying the feeling properly I wonder? This story made me wonder indeed. It was so short, yet in such a short length, the author managed to spin such a wholesome tale. This is perhaps the second or third work I read from this author and every time I think the same. She can write wonderful, engaging stories that carry you away with them and leave you short of breath. She managed to do the same with this one too.

Although it was a bit dark and the future of humanity was still quite fragile, in the end, this relationship gave the entire read a feeling of hope. I loved this story and I sure hope to see more from this author in the future, perhaps a proper novel to delve in.

Strongly recommended!

Blurb: On the harsh desert world of Persis, most of the inhabitants flee to the cliff cities during the searing heat of Daymonth. A young hosteller and his grandparents choose to remain in their waystation as caretakers. This proves to be a wise decision, as a Truth Seeker is stranded there with them. Isolated, the Seeker and the hosteller begin to develop feelings for each other, but the discovery that they are not alone could threaten more than their relationship.

Review: When I get a short story and the genre is sci-fi I get a bit wary. They are so tricky to accomplish, what with creating a new world and keeping up with your story in such short amount of space. However, this one quite made it and provided me with a most enjoyable read.

The World: Persis, this planet is quite peculiar. Two suns shine in a mostly desert land, aka sand everywhere. There are also periods of times when both suns shine all day and night, hence a Daymonth, and when neither sun shines at all, hence Nightmonth. There are three Cities in this world and the rest of it appears to be desert land with the occasional Oasis in it. These Oases have hostels for the travelers to rest and move on to their destination, which bring us to the core of this story.

Now as a world, I loved this one, so much so that I wouldn’t mind one bit a proper novel set on Persis. The language/voice used from the characters reminds me something akin to fantasy tales, with kings and knights. I liked it, it gave the read a different air, and it took it away completely from any resemblance with Earth.

The Romance: Rik is the grandson of a hosteller and he’s helping his opa for the Daymonth – a period of time when both suns’ shine so bright that makes it impossible to stand under their rays. Stranded there is something Rik doesn’t mind at all, but when Seeker Marc gets stranded, there with him this relatively boring month seems quite exciting suddenly.

And this was lovely. I liked Marc, he is mysterious and dangerous, while quite sensual and protective as well. This character made pay attention and wish for more of him. Rik was nice as well but he didn’t capture my “eye” same way Marc did. Both of them as a pair somehow didn’t quite work for me. I don’t know, another character might have suited Marc better.

The Action: So there was also a bit of suspense here as well. This fact nearly scared me on this books behalf. I mean it’s such a short one, do you really need to add suspense? It worked though, probably because it’s light and in the end when all reveals itself you get that “duh” face about you. It gave the story some spice, made it a bit more fun and funnier.

In the end all I have to say is: I love sci-fi and I loved this one. Do you?

P.S. Dear Author, write a novel about Marc pretty please. He is delicious!

Blurb: Sky rockets in flight lead to an unexpected afternoon delight when Todd finds himself on a raft with Glenn as the latter prepares for that evening’s Fourth of July celebration. The men and the fireworks both shoot off in this romantically offbeat, color-drenched, not to mention sweat-drenched, good-time holiday romp. And who could’ve guessed that a desire to become one with nature would lead to becoming two with it?

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3990

Review: See, on occasion there are these cute little shorties that have giggling like a lunatic. Totally giggling the entire read. Sometimes I’m just thankful they are so short, because the image I present to unsuspecting passersby is a bit embarrassing.

One such read was this one. You have Todd who has the day off (4th July) and he hit the wilderness. Well no so much as wilderness as it’s a bit out of his neighborhood. As he tries to settle on his hammock and enjoy the day an ear-splitting noise shatters the quiet of the day.

So when we say a day start with a big Bang, this is exactly what we mean. A BOOM, a handsome man, and fireworks… Do the math and you’ll find yourself reading a hot little story.

But that’s not what really caught my attention here. Yes, it is hot, but it’s also written in a witty way making every line somehow hilarious and funny. “Then I laid my eyes on you and started striping your clothes off,” is on high effect here and made for a scene that had this incredulity about it, yet you couldn’t deny its hotness. It had mumbling “Yeah baby” at some point, and I hate being corny for crying out loud.

So yeah, I liked this one, a lot! I found it almost irresistible inhaling it, a feat easily made of course because it was only twelve pages long. It was worth it though, and made me smile.

Blurb: Newly out of the army, and out of the closet, Paul finds himself at the local gay pride parade. Imagine his surprise when he discovers he knows one of the men walking with the military float. Paul and Dev attended Basic Training together years ago when they were both in the closet. Now that they’ve found out that they’ve got being gay in common, can they discover what else they both like?

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3988

Review: There is only one word to describe this hookup, awkward! But that is what made it perfect. Confused you a bit, didn’t I?

Well, here we have Paul, fresh out of the army and that means only one thing… he’s still getting used to civilian life. And he’s also getting used to the lack of DADT. Pushing himself into a normal life and being out Paul attends Pride where he sees a guy he finds familiar.

And Dev is familiar as they went through basic together once upon a time. Finding out he’s gay, that they both are gay, and now they can actually act on it without fear that is a high on itself, but the chemistry between them also helps a great deal literally forcing them dump the parade and go to Dev’s place.

Nothing weird until this point, but once they get there and after they eat dinner that awkwardness that follows a first hook up set in. You know the one where you constantly say the wrong thing, or don’t know what to say. That was weird for me to read, I felt like squirming in my seat while reading the book, and you know what? I loved it! It made this little short story climb a whole new level on my eyes. It became a bit real. The scene that follows was so damned perfect I was nodding my head and thinking, “Yeah, this author nailed it.” And it was hot, horny even. This pair got to me nice and easy, despite the fact that I didn’t like their first kiss at all, as it was hidden from us.

In the end, weighting pros and cons I found this book great. Recommended!

Now an activist for the environment, Kane knows a man can change. Can he convince Derek to take a new leap of faith?

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3994

Review: Now this was an interesting short story. Derek and Kane had once upon a time been lovers, but Kane had his sights on his career and made a choice. A choice that left loud and clear the fact that he’d Lost Derek forever. Now many years later Derek founds out that his tandem jumper is none other but the infamous Kane.

At this point, we get the impression that the tension is going to skyrocket the moment these two are going to get in the same room. Secretly I was expecting a bit of a fight, some punches flying, you know. That didn’t happen, but the author made a good job with the tension thing. Their first meeting after so many years was a bit of a rocker as Kane was nothing Derek expected. Kane had turn a one-eighty and the trouble Derek expected came in a completely different way.

A point that drove itself home once the jump took over.

The story being so short did not have much of a romance, but we got the feelings and what would be pretty loud and clear. I wished at some point for a small flashback in the days when this pair was together. I wished at some other point for a glimpse in the near future. I also wished for that chemistry that was all around the place to have taken a more solid outlet. While those wishes remained moot points, I did enjoy this read a lot. It was fast, it was solid, and it made my heart beat a bit faster.

Blurb: After their B-24 crashes into the Pacific, Lieutenants Andrew Mackenzie and Harry Glassman make it onto the plane’s life raft just ahead of the sharks. With their survival in doubt, they discover that their love for each other goes deeper than friendship. They promise each other that if they have any future at all, they’ll make sure it’s a future together.

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3993

Review: Well damn, I just love WWII stories, and I wasn’t disappointed by this one.

Lieutenants Mackenzie and Harry Glassman are forced in a rescue mission that was doomed not only to fail, but put in danger the life of the rescue crew. The airplane they were using was lacking at best, its engines both failing them in the middle of the Pacific.

Out of the crew, the only survivors of the crash were Mac and Harry, with Mac being injured, and they missed being shark food by a hair. It seems almost impossible a rescue for them would happen anytime soon and their future is looming a bit dark.

It’s the fact that they may die that encourages Mac to confess he’s attracted to men and furthermore being in love with Harry.

And this is why I love War stories. You know those stories that have you face to face with death and therefore make you a bit reckless, going for it even if the results might not be what you hope for. It’s that desperation of dying that throws to the wind any fear of rejection we face on our times. Here neither one of the characters wanted to die without making one last effort and try to find that elusive feeling of love.

From there on the story moved with such a lovely impact, I was lost in the sensations of these two lovers. A bit macabre at first with all those deaths around, it swiftly turned utterly romantic.

Insta-love? Yes, but who didn’t say I love you back then when your life measured with days, not years. Insta-bond? Yes again, but stranded in the middle of the ocean, facing being shark food with one wrong move, and even  rescue seeming a bit slim, well I do believe I would’ve sworn eternal love myself. I liked the story a lot. I got lost in it and despite being a quick one, it felt wholesome to me.

Blurb: Ethan Turner never liked living in a city, and his job as park ranger at Glacier National Park is just what he dreamed of. He loves protecting the animals and land under his care, and dealing with the occasional tourist — well, all jobs have their drawbacks.

Caleb Sagan, a recent journalism graduate, works at the Billings Tribune. He got stuck with a two-month assignment at Glacier National Park to write a series of articles extolling outdoor life meant to draw more tourists to Montana.

Can these two men overlook their differences long enough to make it to their first date?

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3992

Review: Well there are several ways meeting a guy, but nothing beats saving him from distress. There are also many types we like in a guy, but nothing, nothing beat that one and only type that you don’t like surprising the heck out of you.

So when Ranger Ethan was tasked with finding the city-guy, dumb-lost journalist, Ethan was not too happy about it. And I just love reading about the shock these types of characters get when they face their so-called nemesis. And if Caleb were a bit more confident making Ethan lose it a bit more, it would have made my day.

As it was, it was a pretty nice read, quite enjoyable albeit way too short. It leaves you with the wish of more, of being behind a plant when they have their first date, or in the closet when they have their first… uhm yeah, you get me.

So if you like a nice, quick read, settled in the wildness with two gorgeous guys, give this one a try.

Blurb: Frank Ross is ninety-eight years old, and he’s come to the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. to pay his respects and remember his remarkable lover, Tom Willard, who died at sea during World War II while stationed on a battleship. Except that there’s familiar music in the air, and Frank suddenly isn’t as alone as he’d thought, standing amidst the granite sea of the memorial, with the bronzed metal of the Lone Sailor statue just an arm’s distance away.

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3998

Review: This was such a melancholic read it made me a bit sad and slightly unnerved me.

Frank had once a best friend, who eventually became his lover too. Considering he is now ninety-eight years old (that’s a lot), back when he and Tom were together things were not so easy for gay men, so their relationship must have been tight and closely guarded. However, his memories are quite vibrant and pretty much alive in his mind.

He lost his Tom in the war, but no one ever took his place. Now-days Frank is simply waiting. He’s been waiting an entire life to get back together with his only love.

It is apparent that his time is running out, but when the Lone Sailor’s statue turns into his Tom, Frank is certain that he is dying.

Yet, as a song plays in the background Frank is granted a few minutes with his loved one, he is assured they will be together, and he’s also granted the time to say his goodbyes.

As I said, this is a rather melancholic story, deeply romantic, and tugs to your heart. I liked it, the way it was told was very good and you could easily get lost in this, but I suppose I was rather unprepared for it.

However I don’t hesitate to recommend this to romantic hears out there.

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3996

Review: This is a sweet story about a Marine who comes home from his last deployment to his husband and little baby daughter.

Jason has never seen in person their little girl, as he was already gone when they got her. He has missed everything about her life thus far and his husband’s. As for Ridley, well there’s nothing worse than to have the man you love far away from you, missing out on your child’s life, and not knowing if he’s coming back this time. Thus, when Jason is finally home his emotions are overwhelming him, but a mere word has him dreading tomorrow. Jason wants to talk to him and Ridley hopes with every fiber of his body that Jason isn’t to leave again soon.

This story is indeed sweet. The plot is emotional and urges you into some sweet and sour feelings. The scene where Jason meets Ridley and their daughter at the airport though felt a bit lacking, I expected some more emotional charge there and didn’t quite feel it. However, the story in its entirety was quite decent with characters that demanded respect and attention even as I felt it had room for improvement.

If you’re in the mood for a romantic sweet read though this is quite the story for you.

Blurb: Steven is used to working from home and setting his own schedule, so fulfilling his civic duty by participating in jury duty is getting on his last nerve. But on the morning the trial is set to begin, Steven catches the eye of an adorable bailiff named Mike. A chance meeting at lunch gets the two men talking, and they realize they have more in common than they thought. Their half hour of bonding is interrupted, however, by an unspeakable act. Mike will prove to his fellow officers that being gay doesn’t make him any less of a man, and Steven will learn that there are far worse things to endure than jury duty.

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=3995

Review: Wow, this was a fast and furious read. Jury duty is something I’m not familiar with, but hell if I haven’t seen too many movies/TV-series with them featuring there.

I liked this story; Steven is called to jury duty and he’s so grumpy that he got the “honor” I couldn’t stop chuckling there for a while. Not only does he have to wake up and present himself at the courthouse at 9 a.m. but also he has to like it? Nah, not Steven!

But while he expects to be losing his time there for a week or so life has other plans for him. First comes Mike to rock his day and render him speechless. As his mind is consumes with fantasies about Mike, a most unexpected shocking thing happens that has Steven reeling.

I found this read a bit too short. It was only 13 pages, but the way the events followed backed with the nice writing I completely inhaled this story, reaching the end and looking at the bold letters for a while. It was good, it was very good, but it left me wanting more as there was no real romantic part except for a light flirt and the exchange of phone numbers. I made me wish for a bit more romance there.

However, it was a nice short and I’d recommend it to people who like the “don’t-make-plans-for-life’ll-throw-em-away” idea.

Before they can make amends, a frantic driver interrupts, reporting a badly injured hiker. The other rangers in the area are all occupied, but Mason needs assistance to rescue the wounded teen. Will Jax be willing to set aside their differences to help, before the storm breaks?

Product Link: http://www.torquerebooks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_111&products_id=4004

Review: This story is a follow-up from Avery Dawes’ Mountain Memories, featuring ranger Mason Lake pianist/composer Jackson “Jax” Chamberlain.

The story itself is quite simple, easy flowing, and a rather unchallenging one despite the title wanting this to be a bit of a drama. At least I didn’t see anything dramatic happening, more like a couple having a little bump along the way, which they easily overcame.

From the blurb I also expected some sort of angst what with the couple running against time to save a teenager before the storm caught up to them, however that intensity was nowhere to be found in the text and as I already said everything flew out quite predictably.

What made me not get attached to this story though was mostly the lack of chemistry between the pair and the rather bland narration of their life together. I kept thinking that I needed something more, something to keep me pinned on my desk eager to read this. As it is, I never felt anything more than a slight detachment, even as the core of the story was interesting and should have held my attention.

While there is not much of a plot here, I think the emotions displayed the injured veteran and the kid that had to grow up and take life seriously, along with understanding what a relationship with Andy really means were quite nicely written.

Very short, quite sweet, and utterly engaging with an underlying sense of humor this story is perfect for a break read.

Review: I’m going to sound so cheesy, but this was a naughty, naughty read. Made me giggle like stupid. What can I say, I find threesomes awesome, but this one was written in such a fun, fun way. Yeah! Made giggle on top of everything else…

Honestly, there’s nothing more plot-wise here. This is a story about a threesome relationship. Two of the guys used to be Marines once upon a time and Rig secretly misses that. So once in a while, when he’s alone, he explores this uniform fetish he’s developed, until one day he gets caught.

Imagine getting early home and finding your lover working himself. Now that is an invitation one can’t resist, and damn if Sean Michael doesn’t deliver a hot erotic scene to blow your mind. It’s playful, sensual, and sexy as hell. It had me verging between panting and giggling stupid at the whole deal.
