Blurb: For paramedic Adam Carson, his world is lights and sirens and saving lives. Pressures at work keep him firmly in the closet, and life is too busy to contend with the complications that come with dating and relationships. When a familiar face from his past turns up where he least expects it, Adam starts to question whether or not there is room in his life for those complications.

The last person forensic pathologist Sam McKenna expects to see at pub night is Adam, the guy who made his life hell in high school. The attraction is instant, but Adam isn’t gay and Sam has no interest in pursuing him. Still, the leftover animosity from their teenage years isn’t enough to extinguish the lust growing between them. After both are called to the scene of a horrific murder, Adam admits he’s not as straight as he led Sam to believe and they seek comfort and distraction in each other’s arms. One night becomes many as the murder investigation intensifies, but when Adam is faced with losing Sam, he is forced to make a choice: to break his silence, or to give up everything for the job he loves.

Review: For me, A Forced Silence is a simple pleasure (in a totally good way) because it is basically everything that I am a sucker for in a romance. The narration by Scott R Smith was also great too and made me not want to stop listening. More than anything, I can’t wait to get more into this series (book 2 released by Dreamspinner 29 August 2016) – either reading or audio, I think I could easily enjoy this book either way.

The story follows Adam, a paramedic, and Sam, a forensic pathologist, who cross paths again after a number of years. They knew each other in high school, when Adam became friend with Sam’s then best friend, Mason. It is a complicated relationship which I wish that there was more explanation – or some type of resolution concerning the only ever mentioned and homophobic Mason. For this reason Sam is reticent when it comes to Adam. Not only did he make his life hell but Adam also insists on using the nickname “Dex” when Sam really and truly hates that Dexter is his real name.

The plot line is straight forward, and if you’ve read the blurb there is really no surprise. The mystery and murder investigation itself wasn’t overly suspenseful, it was more background noise and the romance between Sam and Adam was at the forefront of the entire story. Still, it mystery aspect did work well woven in with the romance. The only thing that we don’t really get a feel for in the blurb is fall out in the end. Of course, something needs to be a surprise, I suppose.

The ending is a HEA and just makes me smile, because If you like your paramedics, etc. and are a complete sucker for enemies to lovers this will be a book you will easily enjoy. It’s a real easy listen if you just need something in the background as you work or if you’re commuting.

I really would love to hear the story for Sam’s best friend, Ford, who is there constantly for Sam throughout the book.

Blurb: Spartanburg Spitfires’ goalie and captain Isaac Drake ended last season with an unexpected trip to the playoffs. He’s found a home and family with his coach and mentor, Misha Samarin, and he’s looking forward to making a serious run for the Kelly Cup. But things take an interesting turn when Isaac’s archnemesis, Laurent St. Savoy, is traded to the Spitfires. After Laurent’s despicable behavior in the playoffs last year, Isaac wants nothing to do with him – no matter how gorgeous he is. But that changes when Isaac discovers the reason for Laurent’s attitude.

Laurent St. Savoy grew up the only son of a legendary NHL goalie in a household rife with abuse, constantly treated like a disappointment on and off the ice. When a desperate attempt to escape his father’s tyranny sends him to the Spitfires, the last thing Laurent wants is to make friends. But there’s something about Isaac Drake that he can’t resist, and Laurent has an opportunity to explore his sexuality for the first time, but he’s cracking under end-of-the season pressures. When facing the playoffs and a rivalry turned personal vendetta, Isaac’s not sure he’s enough to hold Laurent—or their relationship—together.

Please be advised: This book does contain some non-graphic references to past childhood physical/emotional abuse as well as issues relating to ED (bulimia and restricted eating, disordered thoughts about eating).

Review: The Scoring Chances series is still the only books I’ve read by Avon Gale, but I love the hell out of this series. What is even better, that other than my opinion from book 2 where I rated it 3.5/5, these have all been strong books with interesting and strong characters. The issues raised are also quite wide and varied. Another thing is great about the series so far is that we started with ECHL team the Jacksonville Sea Storm and now onto the Spartanbury Spitfires. I also have a feeling that perhaps, after the resolution of the present book, that there could be potentially 2 stories with the most hated team in the series, the Ravens.

But I get ahead of myself.

Empty Net is the fourth installment in this series. There is probably enough information that it can be a standalone but if you feel you need the background info, you only need to read book 3, as there is only a couple passing mentions of the team from the first 2 books.

Empty Net features the troubled young guy who was made captain of the Spitfires in the previous, Isaac Drake, aka Drake. He’s had a troubled past as a young adult after being rejected by his family for being gay. His character evolution really did start in book 3, Power Play, where we had seen the Spitfires’ new coaches get together and for Coach Misha to take Drake under his wing. And now we get the chance to get to know Drake more, as a now fairly well put together adult and team player. He is a strong personality, with an equally strong psyche – if that’s the right word. Put it this way, he is strong mentally and has grown up since his issues raised in the previous book.

Pairing up with Drake is new trade Laurent St. Savoy from the hated Ravens to the Spitfires. He was only mentioned is passing along with his asshole father who is a champion NHL player and now ECHL coach, Denis St. Savoy. He is the one that everyone loves to hate in the league because he is an all around asshole. But in the world of fiction, that usually means that there is something major going on that is messing with the character. Really he’s a just a reserved person who is always in self-defense mode and you find out quickly that there is a real nice guy underneath all the homophobic slurs and violence.

Since Drake faced a lot of his demons in the previous book, we just get a summary of what has happened to him as Drake attempts to help Laurent, when he realizes that the man is psychologically scarred and needs help. So in many ways, Empty Net is Laurent’s path to redemption, finding out about himself as a human being and not a boy afraid of his father, as well as the possibility of finding someone that makes life worth living and becoming a better man.

As I said in the opening of this review, the ending – Laurent’s ultimate redemption and making things right – opens up the possibility of us possibly seeing a new and improved Ravens that no are hopefully no longer the brutish, homophobic assholes that they have been. I really do hope this is true but I absolutely adore this series and, honestly, can’t get enough of it.

If hot guys and hockey is your MM fix, you’re going to love this book and this series.

The world ends not with a bang, but with a downpour. Tornadoes spin through the heart of London, New York cooks in a heat wave that melts tarmac, and Russia freezes under an ever-thickening layer of permafrost. People rally at first—organizing aid drops and evacuating populations—but the weather is only getting worse.

In Durham, mild-mannered academic Danny Fennick has battened down to sit out the storm. He grew up in the Scottish Highlands, so he’s seen harsh winters before. Besides, he has an advantage. He’s a werewolf. Or, to be precise, a weredog. Less impressive, but still useful.

Except the other werewolves don’t believe this is any ordinary winter, and they’re coming down over the Wall to mark their new territory. Including Danny’s ex, Jack—the Crown Prince Pup of the Numitor’s pack—and the prince’s brother, who wants to kill him.

A wolf winter isn’t white. It’s red as blood.

Trevor English, the nosy reporter who occasionally shares John’s bed, is demanding information about the crimes. He also wants more of John’s affections. To solve the crime—and prevent more victims—John must delve into the past. Many members of Seaside’s shifter community are involved, but it’s becoming harder and harder to tell which residents can be trusted. Even John’s family isn’t above suspicion. Defining his sexuality didn’t make sense until his best friend spelled it out.

Doug Archer did some pretty idiotic things in the first eight weeks of his junior year of college. First, he kissed his gay best friend, and second, he kissed a guy he’d mistaken for a girl. Not stellar moments for Doug. If he isn’t careful, he’ll lose his spot on the soccer team to the new freshman, or worse, he might misconstrue his new friend Rob’s overly affectionate tendencies for flirting. But if Doug isn’t bothered by another guy’s attention, and he normally dates girls, does that mean he’s gay or bisexual?

Sam Garber suppressed his same-sex attraction his entire life. His father told him it was immoral, and Sam did everything he could to bury his feelings. However, after meeting Doug at a party and kissing him, Sam can’t think of anything else. He decides dating girls is the best way to keep his secret hidden. With playoffs in sight, this is no time to think about guys in any other context than soccer. Only, neither boy anticipates the difficulty in suppressing his attraction for another jock!

So, yeah, I play Heroes of Legend, y’know, the MMO. I’m not like obsessed or addicted or anything. It’s just a game. Anyway, there was this girl in my guild who I really liked because she was funny and nerdy and a great healer. Of course, my mates thought it was hilarious I was into someone I’d met online. And they thought it was even more hilarious when she turned out to be a boy IRL. But the joke’s on them because I still really like him.

And now that we’re together, it’s going pretty well. Except sometimes I think Kit—that’s his name, sorry I didn’t mention that—spends way too much time in HoL.  I know he has friends in the guild, but he has me now, and my friends, and everyone knows people you meet online aren’t real. I mean. Not Kit. Kit’s real. Obviously.

Oh, I’m Drew, by the way. This is sort of my story. About how I messed up some stuff and figured out some stuff. And fell in love and stuff.

The problem is that the blond-haired, blue-eyed Shane found Jesus a long time ago, and he’s torn between his faith and his attraction to Joe. As they make their way across Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona to their final stop on the circuit at the National Western Rodeo in Denver, Joe bides his time for what he hopes will be a relationship with Shane as fulfilling as the one he’d had with Harley. Blurb: Politics, puppy dogs, and passion, oh my!

When his Republican opponent outs him with a photo in a Facebook post, Senator Samuel Dalton doesn’t have many options open to him. It doesn’t matter that the photo is totally innocent. He has no choice but to come clean… until his staff suggest putting a spin on it that leaves Sam reeling.

Sure, he’ll end up with a lot of sympathy, not to mention the possibility of more voters from the LGBT community, but it still seems a pretty drastic solution.

Now all they have to do is persuade Gary, the other man in the photo, to play along. It sounds so easy: convince the constituents of North Carolina that he and Sam are engaged.

No big deal, except for the fact that they’ve only just met….

Review: Senator Sam Dalton is running for re-election when his opponent takes a completely innocent photo and tries to use it for his own political gain. But Sam’s staffers are smarter than that and put a spin on it that has Sam wondering if they are insane. The young staffer in the photo with Sam, Gary, is asked to help out and turn the photo into an opportunity for Sam. All Gary has to do is pretend that Sam is his fiancé and maybe marry him…

This is a great story that was sweet, humorous and beautifully written. Sam has always hidden the fact that he’s gay, he has no intention of coming out or having a relationship with anybody because he loves his career in politics and spends all his time helping the people he represents. Gary is a volunteer staffer on Sam’s campaign when he gets confirmation of his acceptance at NC State Collage for Veterinary Medicine an impulsive hug with the Senator leads to an offer that will change his life.

Sam and Gary are fantastic characters and mesh perfectly together, they are both animal lovers, they both have a great sense of humor and they both have a love of life. Their relationship starts out as a convenience but it rapidly turns into more as they both like what they discover about the other man. Although they are thrown together they make it work, spending time together they both learn to admire each other and when they do take it to the next level it seems steeped in love rather than just lust.

I loved this story and it’s laced with humor throughout, Sam and Gary handle the situation they find themselves in with panache, deftly turning bad situations into good ones and having a natural feel as a couple. I have to admit that Dinky snatched a bit of my heart, he was a little star for the short amount of time he had in the book and I was so happy that Sam and Gary adopted the dog.

I recommend this to those who adore love stories that come out of awkward situations, who love characters that just jump off the page, who love feel good stories laced with humor and love happy endings.
