Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden

by

Cheryl Headford

All Keiron wants is a quiet life. Fat chance with a boyfriend like Bren. But if he thought Bren complicated his life, that was nothing compared to the complications that begin when he opens the door to what he thinks is a naked boy claiming to be his slave.

Draven is a fairy with his sights set on the handsome human who keeps a wild place in the garden for fairies. When Draven slips through a fairy gate into the city, he sets in motion a series of events that binds him to Keiron forever, and just might be the end of him.

While Draven explores Keiron’s world with wide-eyed wonder, Keiron does everything he can to keep Draven’s at bay, until the only way to save Draven and bring him home is to step into a world that should exist only in children stories.

Review: I’m not entirely certain if I’ve read anything by Cheryl Headford but after reading Ari I was completely blown away. First and foremost, I would say that this is a young adult book, but that is just the start of it.

I’ve not come across many books where there are characters who are transgender and/or intersex (books that have addressed one or the other that I’ve read in the past and absolutely love are by Carol Lynne and Andrew Jericho). Here, however, we have on MC, Benji, who is transgender and a second MC, Ari, who is intersex. It is certainly a tricky area to cover in literature and I think that Cheryl has done an amazing job. Yet, like in any MM or FF book, we deal with the complicated emotions of the young characters as well as the reactions of the people around the young couple.

To be quite honest, everything that needs to be known before getting into spoiler territory is already stated in the blurb, so I won’t go over anything. You just need to head into this book knowing that Benji goes to a writers’ convention and meets his online pal, Ari.

Benji has had some heartache in the past when it comes to his family but I absolutely adored his little brother, Marc – at eleven he is somewhere between precocious kid and open-minded teen. Ari’s faced a lot of difficulty from people who are meant to love him when it comes to his condition. He has also faced some true horrors in the past as he had tried to find a boyfriend who accepts him for who he is, not what he is.

Ari and Benji make a quirky couple but the chemistry between them is great, the sweet and tender moments shared between them are nothing short of beautiful. I cannot find anything else to say because it all comes down to the fact that I think that this is brilliant. I love the themes and the way the characters develop. Ultimately, this is a story about love and healing and acceptance, and in a way this is something that most of us see things in life.

This is a wonderful coming of age tale, though at the same time it is an incredibly sweet love story. If you’re looking for something a bit different in the realm of LGBTQ romance fiction, I cannot recommend Ari enough.

Astrin Raphael wakes up in a strange place, frightened and confused. He is told to trust someone who seems to hate him, and he tries—he really tries. However, things change rapidly when he discovers his friend is actually his archenemy, Rowan Gabriel, whose abusive behavior stems from a deeply ingrained, if unwarranted, hatred over something that happened many years before, and simply wasn’t Astrin’s fault.

When Rowan’s uncle and Astrin’s father are kidnapped by Strebo Michael, the two crown princes are catapulted into an adventure that forces them to work together, and along the way their feelings for each other grow. Rowan is quick to let his hate go, but Astrin can’t release his inhibitions. It takes Astrin almost dying from a poisoned dagger before he finally accepts Rowan’s love.

When they return home, their problems continue as their Houses try to negotiate a way for the young men to be together. It soon becomes clear at least one of them will need to relinquish his throne.

Review: This was an amazing book about two young men having to learn to trust one another despite their emotions for one another in the beginning. I have to say it really disturbed me that Prince Rowan blamed Prince Astrin for his parents’ death. He was too young to have done anything to them so I did not understand or comprehend his resentment for Astrin. I felt it was misplaced.

Prince Astrin I felt sorry for. Being held hostage by someone who despised him was not pleasant in the least. I wanted to hug him and tell him to stay strong everything would be alright. Astrin struck me as a strong young man despite the predicament he found himself in. He seemed resilient and determined at times.

Some of the scenes were sweet between these two once they learned to trust the other. Others had me holding my breath or gasping in astonishment. Wonderfully written, this story holds the reader’s attention to the very end.

I loved the entire story and the balance between good and bad so to speak. Absolutely fantastic story.

Highly recommended.

Review: To me this story was about two young men who help each other overcome things that have happened to them while at the same time wanting to live a normal happy life. As they become closer, someone doesn’t like it and tries their best to hurt them in one way or another.

It surprised me that Ace’s parents treated him like an embarrassment rather than a son. I was horrified by the way, his brothers treated him. I just didn’t understand how anyone could treat a disabled person like that. Ace seemed like a very independent young man to me who was more than capable of doing things by himself without the need to constantly be supervised. When he did need help, he would ask for it. I was very impressed with him.

Although I understood why Haze had rage issues, I felt that Ace helped him a lot when it would hit. I really felt horrified at what Haze had been through in the past but was also glad he and Ace found each other so Haze could finally move on from the past.

Very well written however, I didn’t understand why there was the number 1 after some sentences in the book. I also didn’t understand why Logan got away with what he did with only a talking to. Other than those two things, it was a really good book to read that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. The author did a very good job with the details and capturing the emotions of the main characters as well as other characters at various times throughout the book.

Fantastic read. Highly recommended.
