Blurb: Scott Halleck and Julian Reeves are polar opposites in almost every way. Scott, a modern arts curator at a museum in Chicago, relishes the finer things in life. Julian is a strange photographer whose hair color changes as frequently as his mood. As far as Scott can see, Julian is an erratic know-it-all who lives his life one day to the next. To Julian, Scott is an uptight, too-coiffed perfectionist.

As the two men continue to run into each other, their dislike grows, but beneath that animosity, a fire is beginning to spark. Scott is baffled when he realizes he is falling for Julian, a man who burns hotter than a wildfire. Scott will have to decide, for the first time in his life, if he’ll let the flames take over.

Review: This was a difficult one for me to review. This is a fantastically put together book and the artist within the two main characters comes out clearly in the writing, to the point of poetry. However, and this is a big however, I just wasn’t feeling it. Let me explain:

Firstly, this story about art curator Scott Halleck, told from his POV. He’s got a pretty ordinary life with an attentive boyfriend that he realises his feelings aren’t so strong (yes, it’s completely okay to feel sorry for both Scott and Ryan, I understand and appreciate both perspectives). Then at a bar he meets Mark, who is basically an arsehole, but what the hey… then he meets Aaron, which is just Mark’s alias and again the guy is an arsehole… and then finally he meets Mark/Aaron as Julian, estranged brother to his best friend’s girlfriend. There is an instant connection between the guys, but Scott has Ryan and Julian is just continually being combative/ destructive to anyone who wants to make nice with him.

Now, this is where I wasn’t feeling it. I felt the sexual tension and the attraction between the MCs. I felt the conflict within the characters, too. I get that this is meant to be an unhealthy type of romance with no real HEA other than what we do get. But for some reason it just didn’t completely gel for me. Too much was left unresolved while Scott and Julian miraculously held hands and wandered off into the sunset with their HFN, they spent too many angst-ridden pages running from each other.

Of course, it might just be that I am only one of a handful that feels this way. As I said before, the writing is almost poetic and yet the talk of hollowness, destruction, etc. makes me think that Scott is borderline obsessive over Julian. While Julian has his own demons to face (which I don’t think was fully addressed by the end and could have had more), Scott also talks of his state of mind that screams to me like unaddressed depression. Neither of those sits well with me. I don’t mind dark romances, the kind of head-fucks that speak of destructive relationships, but at the same time I don’t like stories that don’t fully do justice (or acknowledge) any physical/substance abuse and other mental problems.

Yet, in all that, this is a well thought out and thought provoking book, thought provoking in the fact that I was ready to yell at my screen on public transport while reading. The writing is as artistic as the characters, though you could never really, on face value, call Scott a haunted artist. This is a dark romance where both character are fighting themselves and each other.

Review: Nash Summers is a new author for me so I wasn’t too sure what to expect. In a way I was pleasantly surprised and in another I was totally creeped out. I can’t say that I am or will ever be a fan of this story though. To me the tone was just too dark and just too intense for me to really get into. As for the story itself it was well written, with a lot of depth that will drag you in from the moment one starts reading it.

I have always felt that Louisiana was a place that was deep, dark and mysterious. You hear many things about it and it was never a place I wanted to visit, although there were some interesting areas that did sound intriguing. Nash has given us a story that makes you feel like you are right there with them, freaking out the whole way.

Levi can take one look at a person’s eyes to know what they are like. His family, as well as himself, are connected deeply to the sides of good and evil. Levi can see the soul; another can see ghosts and so forth. His soul is actually in my mind a ghost I would guess, and very few can see it. His own grandmother had told him that he would fall in love with the devil. He is aligned with the darkness and has found the one man that was his. His grandmother was right.

Monroe is full of darkness and evil, but in truth it is all a curse. His darkness is what calls to Levi. When Monroe came home, the town was not welcoming at all. He feels like he deserves everything they throw at him and sees himself as the monster they call him. It will be up to Levi to save his soul and to show him that he is more than what others see.

It has a very creepy mysterious look about it, but the characters are a different type that I haven’t really come across in all of my reading. You can tell how Monroe really is with his reaction to Levi and how he doesn’t want to hurt him at all. If he was so evil, he would not care. I definitely would not read this at night and alone.

Overall the story is very well told and flows just perfect. The pace was a bit slow for me and I can’t say that this will ever be a story that I will ever like. I can honestly say after reading this that I will probably stay away from the state as well. I am afraid that this story was just not for me and I will probably avoid the next book.

However, if you like paranormals with dark tones, a mystery to solve and evil, then this will be a hit for you. I would recommend it.

Review: Jones is part of a team in ENAD, Enforced Necessary Arms Division. He has been enhanced for strength, speed and anything else to help him in his missions. He has been out of the loop for years due to not completing the last mission his team was sent on. He has finally been called back into service only to discover that the man he was once in love with is the leader of the team.

This division was created to do the dirty work of the higher-ups wanting to keep their hands clean in my opinion. Carver seemed cold at first, though I could understand to a point as he’s been modified as well and deemed one of the best. Intense, gritty scenes leave you holding your breath for the outcome.

Although I’m not used to this type of story per se I found it intriguing and fascinating. This story keeps your attention from the beginning. I was impressed with the details of the technology in the story. Well written.

Great read.

Blurb: If Maps ruled the world, his best pal Benji would be court jester, and every day would celebrate a new experiment.

No, scratch that.

If Maps ruled the world, his best pal would still be living next door, and there wouldn’t be any gap-toothed new guy staring at him as if he’s bonkers.

Pity Maps doesn’t rule the world . . .

Review: This is a fantastic book! I liked this author’s previous books a lot, but this…I absolutely loved!!! In fact, I still feel all gooey inside, all soft and bubbling with happiness; when a writer is capable of writing a book that affects me this way, I’m a forever fan.

This is a YA story and there’s no sex involved so if you’re looking for something steamier, you’re in the wrong place. That being said, this book is still worth reading, if only for a chance to meet these adorable and quirky characters.

Maps is a 16-year-old boy who’s being overly dramatic because his best friend Benji is moving away…..a block away. I adore Maps. he’s such a hilarious character! I started laughing at the first paragraph and I pretty much continued until right before the last one….because that one put this stupid smile on my face that doesn’t seem like it will go anywhere for a while.

Maps is geeky, smart, funny, sarcastic, overly dramatic, self-centered, and socially inapt; all those characteristics shouldn’t work together, right? Well they do and the end result is a character that’s going to stay with me for a long time.

Lane is Maps’ new neighbor, and he’s the polar opposite of Maps. Lane is a jock; he’s big and tall, manly, kind and not quite so smart. Lane and Maps become good friends but there’s this chemistry, this intensity between them that I felt every time these two were around each other. They’re both young and while Lane knows he’s straight, Maps is just now discovering his sexuality. The attraction Maps feels towards Lane doesn’t go unnoticed by anyone, including

Maps’ parents and his best friend Benji. Their acceptance and support was incredibly heartwarming. But Maps is unlike anyone Lane has ever met and he can’t help but be drawn to him. So, Lane likes girls…and Maps.

This isn’t one of those in-your-face love stories, it’s subtle and sneaky and it packs a serious punch, I’m still reeling from it. And that “ending” was so perfect…because it’s not really an ending, at least that’s not the way I look at it.
“Be mine, even just for a little while.”

I hope we see more of Maps and Lane, because I believe their story is just beginning.

I recommend this book to everyone, whether you like YA or not, I guarantee you’ll love it!
