Torn and Frayed
(The Gabriel Church Tales 02)
by
Rodd Clark
Conscience isn’t something all people are born with…
Gabriel Church is a portrait in contrast. It would be easy to get lost in his pale-blue eyes, ache with the need to feel the strength of his masculine frame. He appears to be nothing but animal and instinct. The only people who know the full depth of that truth are dead, murdered, or two thousand miles away.
Gabe is a serial killer, and for the first time in his life, he has more on his mind than his own survival. This time he is running from Seattle to protect the only person he thinks innocent in his laundry list of crime and murder: Christian Maxwell, his biographer and unexpected lover.
Drawn to a place he never thought to return, Gabe finds new and different realities. Realities that insist he let go of his tragic past, those incredible perceptions of God, and his own divinity. He must open his eyes to what the love of a good man can do to heal a broken soul.

Bodies Beautiful
(Summerskill and Lyon 02)
by
Steve Burford
“Y’know, time was when the serial killers went after helpless young women. Now they’re taking out bodybuilders.”
When promising young bodybuilder Paul Best is found gruesomely murdered, DI Claire Summerskill and DS Dave Lyon find themselves deep in the unfamiliar territory of hard core gyms and weights, supplements and steroids. But when the one thing linking the growing list of murder victims is that they are the last men you’d expect to be victims, Summerskill and Lyon are faced with their toughest case yet.
“Bodies Beautiful” is the second in the Summerskill and Lyon series of police procedural novels.
Blurb: For Ricky Hackworth, a summer job to save money before he leaves for college is a necessity. When he lands a job as a lifeguard at the Mermaid Inn in Latona, Alabama, on the beautiful Gulf Coast, it’s like a dream come true. But once he moves into the Inn, he starts hearing stories about the lifeguard from the previous summer…and how he vanished without a trace right in the middle of the summer. Before long, Ricky realizes the Inn and the town are hiding some dark secrets…secrets someone is willing to kill to protect, and Ricky has to find out the truth before he, too, vanishes without a trace.
Review: I have read two complete series by this author and have loved each one of them, so it wasn’t a far stretch that this would be any different. It is not part of a series but a standalone story. At first it is a bit misleading; what with finding out some of the information half way though the story so I was a bit miffed with that. However the mystery soon moves into something a bit darker then I normally read.
At first I must admit that I was thinking paranormal type story, but it definitely was not. Which was a plus for me. Although I do love paranormals, mermaids were never one of my favorites. They always gave me the creeps.
So what you get here is a complete mystery with a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing. I felt bad for the young man in the end, but damn it was good. It is not as action packed as I had expected though. I was also not really into the supporting characters as I should have been I suppose. The girl comes off as a waste but she soon picks up in the story. And here I thought Ricky really went there for the job, the blurb definitely doesn’t let you know. I felt a bit let down on that part and the fact that you don’t find it out till the book is halfway done.
Ricky was trying his hardest to save money to go to college. He had decided to go away from home to do so, but there is a hidden reason behind it all. Zack had gone there during the summer to work and within a short time there ended up in a world that was dark and nasty. He turned up missing and Ricky wanted to find out why and how. That is if it doesn’t get him killed as well.
Now I am not a fan of having the readers think this is a romance, because it is not. It is just a dark mystery surrounding another, who just happens to be the main guy’s boyfriend. It starts off with a description of the place and let’s just say that I would never visit there, not even if someone paid me to do so. It is a very fascinating story that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout it all.
Now the story is very good and the writing was perfect, however it was just a bit too dark for my taste. I figure it is definitely not a story to read before going to bed, that is if you dream of what you read.
I am afraid that even though I connected with the story and Ricky, the story was just not for me. However I can’t wait to read more by this author.

Murder, Romance, and Two Shootings
by
Todd Allen Smith
The scent of his own blood shakes away the disbelief of the gunman entering the city council room. Todd remembers that smell and can’t deny that he is once more the target of a gunman’s bullet.
Healing from his physical wounds is the easy part, grounded in gratitude for his very survival. Rebuilding his life will be the hard part. But he is reminded he is luckier than others whenever he thinks of his friend Rick.
After the first time he was shot, Todd had to learn to walk again, but now he faces the bigger challenge of learning how to love.
WARNINGS: Depictions of two shootings, ptsd, a graphic gay bashing murder and rape of a corpse.
Blurb: Twelve dead children. An ex-priest with the faith to move mountains. A hunter out of the depths of legend. Together, they must find a way to overcome their pasts and become something entirely new if they are to defeat an ancient evil.
David Shaughnessy was content in his life as a police detective in Armata, California. It lacked the visceral, sick thrill that came with exorcising demons, but it was better for him, saner. Until the night he got called out to a vicious murder in the woods, and met Dallan Jaeger. The older man and Interpol agent is much more than he seems to be, and their connection is immediate, powerful. Trust blooms quickly as they learn to work together to pursue the evil fae responsible for the murders.
They must learn to do more than trust each other if David is to fulfill his birthright and claim what was so long denied him. Only then do they have a hope of catching the killer…in the Twist.
Review: When I first saw this book it fascinated me, but I still wasn’t to sure I wanted to read it. I still picked it but sat on it for quite awhile. I have never really been one to pick a story by an author I have not read before, but still the story called to me. There was just something about it that drew me to it.
I have never been a fan of dark stories, horror or even paranormal mysteries. This story however, once I started reading it kept my attention from the first word. It was compelling and extrememly dark. The characters are very unique and so are their stories.
There is a dead child in a tree, murdered and left for them to find. Then to find out that it is not one child that this evil has taken but twelve. Twelve innocent’s to be slaughtered by an evil no one knows about. David is an ex-priest who has a dark past. Parents gone, they were raised in a horrible place that did more to them in the name of evil. Only to be taken by priest that were cruel and sadistic. He has left the priesthood and is now a police detective who deals with the worst one can see.
Dallan works for Interpol and is older than dirt. He is the leader of the Hunters. A paranormal group that hunts the evils down and takes them to where they were meant to be. Twelve children have lost their lives and Dallan is sent in to find him. What it leads him to is a man who has been hurt and scarred, but whose heart is still so big and powerful. It leads him to a family he had not expected.
David must open his mind to the things that could be and what he is. He must claim his birthright and fight with the hunters. It will also lead him to his heart.
Now this is one book that I would love to put a higher than five mark on. It is a very fascinating story that made me hunger for more. I can not wait to get my hands on the next story. This is one book that might change my mind on stories like this. I would definitely recommend this.

Rubble And The Wreckage
(The Gabriel Church Tales 01)
by
Rodd Clark
Everything Crumbles
Gabriel Church knows you can’t take a life without first understanding just how feeble it is. If you desire murder, you hold a life in your hand. Whether you release it to grant life or grip tighter to end it, it is at your command and discretion.
Gabriel is a serial killer with a story to tell.
Christian Maxwell studied abnormal psychology in college but chose instead to focus on a career in writing. His background comes in handy when he thinks of writing about a serial killer. He can’t think of anyone more qualified to write the story of Gabriel Lee Church and in the murderer’s own words.
It’s been done before, but never with a killer who has yet to be captured or convicted. With nothing more than a gentleman’s understanding between them, Christian records Gabriel’s life story. Gabriel doesn’t ask for his complicity, nor does he ask for his silence. Christian’s interest in the man, though, is fast becoming something more than academic.
When Christian and Gabriel become unexpected friends and then lovers, the question remains: What is Gabriel’s endgame…and why does he want his story told?
Warning: Contains scenes of graphic violence, suggestion of child sexual abuse, on-page child physical abuse, use of derogatory language, homophobia

Psychopaths & Sinners
(Don’t 05)
by
Jack L. Pyke
Because us? Psychopaths and sinners… we don’t need fixing, Gray.”
Three bodies, three mutilations, each one with something… unusual inserted into the wounds. The deaths are enough to leave Ash Thomas scrambling around to find someone to trust as the murders hit so close to home and heart. For Gray Raoul, MI5 director of G-Branch, the deaths offer something else, a fall back into a familiar life where culling serial killers cater to his own darker mindset. But the farther Gray moves away from home, the more he realises serial killer games in the field are nothing compared to who he has locked up back at home. Sometimes walking the fine line between psychopaths and live-in lovers is a far darker game. For Ash, that might just mean he’s on his own now, facing a killer who has a deadly fascination for pretty young men and dancing Holly Blue butterflies over their skin.
Release date: 22nd April 2018
About Jack!
Jack L. Pyke blames her dark writing influences on living close to one of England’s finest forests. Having grown up hearing a history of kidnappings, murders, strange sightings, and sexual exploits her neck of the woods is renowned for, Jack takes that into her writing, having also learned that human coping strategies for intense situations can sometimes make the best of people have disastrously bad moments. Redeeming those flaws is Jack’s drive, and if that drive just happens to lead to sexual tension between two or more guys, Jack’s the first to let nature take its course.
Blurb: Danny and Vince have an almost perfect gay marriage in New York, and then they move to a small gay enclave in the suburbs of Pennsylvania where they discover something interesting: most of the older gay couples have open marriages. Danny and Vince are still in their twenties, and everything about their lives is new and exciting. So when they leave New York to be closer to Vince’s job as a TV weather person in Pennsylvania, they discover they’re interested in exploring the possibilities of an open gay marriage, too. In the midst of all this “adulting,” from being first time homeowners to buying a new car, the changes Danny and Vince experience in the small town of Penn’s Grant lead them to new sexual and emotional experiences they never had in New York. They not only meet gay couples who have been together for decades, but a few who have been leading double lives and hiding deep dark secrets that have ruled their lives. Thanks to his new open gay marriage, Danny discovers a few secrets about his own strong desires for men he never knew existed. Will their open gay marriage ruin them both forever, or will it wind up bringing them closer together? And will the move to Penn’s Grant turn them into the small town gay couple they never wanted to become in the first place?
Review: While swingers are far from my preferred genre, I jumped on this book for the opportunity to read something written both by and for the actual members of the gay/mlm community. What Field advertises is a story of identity/sexual exploration, self-discovery, double lives, growth as gay men, and some teasings of gay history. This is what I’ll be paying the most attention to.
The first tidbit that strikes me is that Danny works as a freelance writer, to which I smirk and announce, “hashtag own voices” while my partner is trying to sleep (sorry partner!). To be fair, I give TV shit about that all the time, too.
There’s a certain ache of recognition in just hearing some dynamics of your own relationship described. I hear from people in heterosexual relationships who haven’t so much as kissed in years, who don’t have any clue how to initiate intimacy let alone sex. Meanwhile, 10 pages in: yep, there’s the middle-of-convo buttgrab of a regular couple who hasn’t had the chance to forget what oral feels like (or what it’s like to take advantage of a stairwell). Thank fuck.
I am grateful for the way race was addressed in this: frankly, respectfully, and without sugaring up how the average person actually *does* address race.
Our narrator has a subtle hand at introducing the things that annoy the fuck out of him but he doesn’t want to say outright. The battle of following his family of origin’s rules is both intriguing and familiar.
The politics are believable, both to the tune of laughs and sighs.
I am not Romani, and I am not sure how the American Romani experience differs from elsewhere or if the author is Romani. If Field is not, he’s treaded into some disappointingly face-palming levels of stereotyping here. If he is, well, we’ve all internalized shit we’re told about ourselves, but it sucks when we start inflicting it on our own communities, too.
I got a kick out of Nick’s “detective” story arch.
Speaking of Nick, minor nitpick: always double-check who “Nick” really is. It seems like the author might have planned him in two different roles than he eventually ended up in, and that that slipped through editing.
Four stars and recommending to my friends, even if Danny never does realize how awesome pickup trucks are. Delightful read.

by
Cordelia Kingsbridge
It’s the height of summer in Las Vegas. Everyone believes the serial killer Seven of Spades is dead—except Levi Abrams and Dominic Russo—and it’s back to business as usual. The one bright spot for both of them is their blossoming relationship.
But things aren’t so simple. Soon Levi is sucked into a dangerous web of secrets and lies, even as his obsession with the Seven of Spades intensifies. Dominic knows that Levi isn’t crazy. He knows the Seven of Spades is still out there, and he’ll do anything to prove it. But Dominic has his own demons to battle, and he may be fighting a losing war.
One thing is certain: the Seven of Spades holds all the cards. It won’t be long before they show their hand.

The Raven Prince & Other Stories
by
Jean-Paul Whitehall
Our Lady of the Axe: In a Regency England where magic used to be real, Eleanor, her dear friend Diana, and three young girls are kidnapped. It will take all of Eleanor’s strength and courage, plus a magical axe and cleavage (not that kind) to set them free, and foil the man behind the kidnapping.
Edging: Will a mistake about meaning make a mess for Tommy and Vince? Or maybe lead to something more?
The Plan That Didn’t Gang Aft Agley: Jack’s plans have a tendency to go way agley. He hopes his special plan for Billy at football practice is the one that won’t.
Family Be Damned: Look for the two Br’er Rabbit moments. One: She wasn’t unhappy Tommy got paid to take her to the eighth grade dance. She even slipped him $25 to agree. Two: Her mom made her older brother take her to the dance. The $50 she paid him was just a sisterly bonus.
The Raven Prince: Sixteen-year-old Mike hopes he can blend in at his new school. Except he’s short, slender, goth-looking with the shiny black hair, black eyes and thick lashes, wears an elegant suit and tie, and drives a Mercedes convertible. He’s also gay, a raven shifter in a human school and eventually he has to be the Raven Prince.
Standing up to the bullies who rule the school—Preacher’s Son, Banker’s Son, Sheriff’s Son, Principal’s Daughter—isn’t blending in. When the Four can’t get to Mike, they go after him through his best friend, Johnny, the devoutly straight wrestling star who doesn’t care about the gay thing.
If Johnny is hurt, will it take the Raven Prince to get justice? Raven justice?
100% of the author’s royalties will be donated to a local LGBT youth organization.
Blurb: Cloister Witte is a man with a dark past and a cute dog. He’s happy to talk about the dog all day, but after growing up in the shadow of a missing brother, a deadbeat dad, and a criminal stepfather, he’d rather leave the past back in Montana. These days he’s a K-9 officer in the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and pays a tithe to his ghosts by doing what no one was able to do for his brother—find the missing and bring them home.
He’s good at solving difficult mysteries. The dog is even better.
This time the missing person is a ten-year-old boy who walked into the woods in the middle of the night and didn’t come back. With the antagonistic help of distractingly handsome FBI agent Javi Merlo, it quickly becomes clear that Drew Hartley didn’t run away. He was taken, and the evidence implies he’s not the kidnapper’s first victim. As the search intensifies, old grudges and tragedies are pulled into the light of day. But with each clue they uncover, it looks less and less likely that Drew will be found alive.
Review: Special Agent Merlo and K-9 Deputy Cloister Witte are assigned to work together to solve a missing child case. These two have worked together before and are attracted to one another yet at the same time cannot stand each other. Tensions abound as the two work closely with one another.
They decide to put their differences aside and focus on the case. The case and mystery itself is complicated as the missing child is related to Javi’s FBI mentor. Needless to say the higher ups want the case solved quickly but it turns into so much more as previous events are connected.
I have to say I loved how the author did not make this story about a romance and side story about the mystery. It was a great read with two MC’s fighting their attraction for each other while at the same investigating the disappearance. There was mystery, suspense and some very hot scenes between the MC’s.
Blurb: Theo Reese is just an average high school student with a passion for hockey and an uncanny talent when it comes to computers… at least on the surface.
What his teammates, fellow students, and even his boyfriend don’t realize is that Theo leads a double life. When he’s not putting up his facade of normal, Theo is working as an agent for Tactical Operational Support, where his technical genius is more than just a hobby. At sixteen he is responsible for helping agents in the field and keeping the TOS network secure.
It’s a secret he has to keep—from everyone.
But secrecy becomes even harder when a hacker compromises the system TOS uses to track its agents and Theo’s dad goes missing. Theo must find him and stop the hacker, which means leaving the comfort of his computer screen and venturing into a very real and very deadly world.
And if that’s not enough to deal with, all the secrecy is really putting a strain on Theo’s love life.
Review: Theo has his plate full being a student, boyfriend, hockey player and working for a secret agency. The problem is there is never enough time in the day for everything so some things have to put on the back burner like quality time with his boyfriend, Eddie, who has no idea he works for a secret agency.
I liked the explanations as to what Theo was doing throughout the book or I would have been lost. TOS is kinda like other agencies that work for the government but who go in and do things the FBI, CIA, etc can not do. In this case it’s to take down Blackbird.
I really liked that despite the danger Theo wanted to help in any way he could. Though he did not come out unscathed it felt realistic as opposed to the MC always managing to avoid being hurt. The cast of characters throughout added an extra element of suspense and mystery. I especially loved the codenames they were awesome.
I am looking forward to reading more in the series.

How to Domesticate a Russian Bear
(A Russian Bear III)
by
C.B. Conwy
So, all Mischa really wanted was sex. Hot, kinky sex, and preferably lots of it.
But then he got a sub, and then the sub turned into a fiancé, and now apparently Mischa is supposed to settle down and be all domesticated. However, Mischa does not do tame.
Well, at least he didn’t use to. Now he’s beginning to think that yes, he does indeed do tame. Unfortunately, his sub doesn’t seem to get that.
Tom knew that Mischa was a handful. Hell, that’s basically what made Tom fall head over heals for him. But figuring out how to handle his postgraduate studies combined with a long-distance relationship is driving him nuts. And not in the great, Mischa-is-torturing-me-with-kinky-sex-toys way (even though that happens, too. A lot). More like in the this-is-killing-me-slowly-and-I-don’t-know-what-to-do-about-it way. Unfortunately, Mischa finds out and puts his foot down, and then suddenly Tom has some very hard choices to make.
Then there’s Mischa’s busybody bridezilla friend, karate practice with people who actually hit back, and the arrival of the inlaws. Because just what do you do with the finest privately owned dungeon in North America when your family turn up?
That’s when Tom realizes that domesticating a Russian bear may take more work than even he realized.
Warning: An unrepentantly grumpy Dom with an unrepentantly pain-loving sub, kink so hot that the reader will be in imminent danger of blushing, and two characters who do their very best to turn a perfectly nice romance into a porn movie every chance they get.

(Seven of Spades 01)
by
Cordelia Kingsbridge
Homicide detective Levi Abrams is barely holding his life together. He’s reeling from the fallout of a fatal shooting, and his relationship with his boyfriend is crumbling. The last thing he’s prepared for is a serial killer stalking the streets of Las Vegas. Or how he keeps getting thrown into the path of annoyingly charming bounty hunter Dominic Russo.
Dominic likes his life free of complications. That means no tangling with cops—especially prickly, uptight detectives. But when he stumbles across one of the Seven of Spades’s horrifying crime scenes, he can’t let go, despite Levi’s warnings to stay away.
The Seven of Spades is ruthless and always two moves ahead. Worst of all, they’ve taken a dangerously personal interest in Levi and Dominic. Forced to trust each other, the two men race to discover the killer’s identity, revealing hidden truths along the way and sparking a bond neither man expected. But that may not be enough to protect them.
This killer likes to play games, and the deck is not stacked in Levi and Dominic’s favor.
