Fairytales and Myths for the Modern Gay

The modern age is devoid of magic.

Or is it?

How else could a stolen guitar or a lost shoe lead to love?

What but magic could spark romance at a workplace assessment?

Or turn a mean-spirited monster into a man?

Six fairytales and myths are given a contemporary MM twist in this collection of stories, proving that sometimes the mundane can be magical too.

DRAGGED INTO LOVE (Þrymskviða)

When Theo’s landlord steals a prized guitar in lieu of rent owed, he informs Theo he will return the instrument on one condition: he wants a date with Theo’s twin sister.

LOVE’S CODE (Ariadne and Theseus)

Andre must pass the examination if he wants to keep his job.

However, he is distracted by his unspoken love for fellow programmer, Eren.

GUESSING GAMES (Rumplestiltskin)

Sasha told a little white lie in his job interview and it won him the role.

Only now he is faced with a pile of work he doesn’t know how to complete.

ASSIGNATIONS AND ULTIMATUMS (The Strange Elopement of Tinirau)

Hunter and Ross are in love, but Ross’ father keeps trying to set him up with undesirable, yet powerful, older men, the latest of whom happens to be Ross’ boss.

LOST AND FOUND (Cinderella)

Cillian is dreading the work masquerade ball, but once there he finds himself romanced by a dashing stranger, only to flee when he discovers the man’s identity.

A DEBT IS A DEBT (Beauty and the Beast)

Dunstan Griffin is not a man to let a debt slide, so when debtor Alfred Siskin offers the EA services of his son, Wynn, in lieu of payment, Dunstan accepts.

Review: This is the third book in the Legend of the Silver Hunter series. It picks up where the second book left off. This book was awesome. It takes the reader on a journey where things are not as they appear and secrets are revealed.

Keiran and Cory are back again in this amazing story. I loved all the detail surrounding Beauty and the Beast as they were translated. Keiran’s determination to do away with the evil in the forest once and for all despite his nightmares was admirable.

Cory’s steadfast support of Keiran was touching as was Billy’s. I absolutely did not like the ebony mage and the beast. They were evil and didn’t care who they hurt to achieve their goals.

The battle scene was fierce. The plans and precautions taken were well thought out. I loved how Keiran dealt with his grandmother and the rest of the matriarchs. As I felt they were uncaring of what happened to other hunter candidates during their testing and did nothing to help.

All in all this was a fantastic story that I really enjoyed.

Review: Each book in the Mending the Rift collection features Rin and Merin. You get to see when they get together and how they continue to grow. You have to read book one first because if you don’t then you can get confused. Now this story is an amazing one but they have a way with them that can actually have you feeling the opposite of what was intended.

Rin and Merin are so deeply in love but a war is in the way. Rin has had the babies and even though they are happy the war has made things so difficult. The Riki are a desert type of people who are running out of water. They don’t trust anyone, so all they do is continue the war. They have brought the war to close to the tent that holds Rin and the children. It is time to go home. Merin misses his mate, but he has to find a way to get it over with. Then he is injured and Rin loses it. His control of his magic is threatened, but damn the man was made to rule.

I must admit that this is not one of my favorite series but they are inching their way there. I love Rin and Merin. Rin is just more out there than anyone I have seen. He is feisty and has an attitude that should never change. He keeps Merin on his toes that is for sure.

It took me a while to get into Valentina’s stories, but I can tell you that she has an amazing gift at giving you a world that you can lose yourself into. I have never been a fan of fantasies but this is one of my favorites in that. There is a lot of danger and action written in these stories that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.

I look forward to reading more by Valentina. They are not very big books but they have a lot of meat in them. The characters are well written with a lot of feelings and they seem to mix well with the others.

I had a blast reading them and would recommend reading them. What is better than sexy men, adorable children, hot sex, danger, excitement, suspense and action?

Blurb: The first step on the road to addiction is desire…

Tighe is Summer’s prince, the second son of the Summer Queen. The blindness of his mortal father cursed him with eyes that see too much, and now he wanders the woods of immortal Summer alone. He is an outsider in his own country or at best a curiosity—never someone anyone truly wants.

Faelan is gancanagh, one of dark Summer’s most treacherous beings. Beguiling as he is beautiful, he, like all of his kind, was made to incite lust and longing, even as he seeks true love. For anything mortal, anything unprepared, even to be in his presence is dangerous.

When the two meet by chance, Faelan can’t help but be curious about this half-mortal prince—and the prince is more interested in a companion than questioning what kind.

Tighe has never seen anything but the lie behind love. Faelan is love’s lie and knows it. Is the beginning and end of everything between them inevitable? Which is stronger, need—or nature?

Review: Tighe, as the son of the Summer Queen and a blind mortal, has very special eyes. They saw everything hidden. He considers them a curse since he sees even truths that people had from themselves. This has led to him being alone and lonely. He is looking for something different in a lover, someone who he can actually love.

That comes in the form of Faelan, a being that draws people to himself through lust. But that lust is dangerous and can become addictive. No one sees beyond Faelan’s beauty. He wants someone to love.

These two are opposites, but both looking for the same thing in life. They want to belong and love someone. They also break their normal patterns and set out to give each other what they both need.

I enjoyed this read. The writing is good, and was very descriptive. Not just the sex, but also the surrounding and emotions. It moved along at a comfortable pace for such a short read without feeling rushed.

Review: Ummm… to find the words. First off, despite my liking fantasy and science fiction this one was, for lack of a better word: a mindfuck. As you will find out, not a huge fan of this. It’s all very fairy tale-esque and Grimm in terms of characters and setting – something that I usually enjoy reading. Honestly, this concept hooked me in the first third of this book.

Jamie ‘Redhood’ works for Granny’s in Grimmtown – see what I meant just now? He tinkers with some recipes (makes him seem like a rather sketchy sort of bloke) and that lands him in trouble. This is where the mind-fuck comes into play. Who is holding him? What do “they” really want?

It’s a bit Matrix (which I can’t stand) crossed with Tron (which I like) crossed with a Mexican drug cartel. I will admit, the story is well written and moves along well, one reason why I probably read the whole thing. It was the whole “are we in the Matrix? Are we the Matrix?” feel to it that I did not like. If that’s your thing normally, then I’m sure you will enjoy it.

Although one thing this does have that the Matrix does not is the smoking hot sex scenes.

Blurb: Playing the part of another man’s husband to fulfill a wish is easy, but what happens at midnight when the magical day is over?

Review: I have to say for a short story this packs a big punch. I was expecting a very sweet but predictable story. You know men meet, have sex, and fall in love, happy at least for now. Wow was I floored.

It started out pretty much that way. We met Scott just after he was magically taken from his motel bed and dropped in the bed of another man, Cameron. His instructions are very vague, but he can’t leave for 24 hours. After that he goes back to his old life, but retains the memory of this one day.

Cameron, Scott’s husband for the day believes they have dated for years, and been married for 6 months. Scott is there to fulfill the perfect day of wedded bliss.

What’s the catch? Where Cameron knows everything about Scott as if they had met years ago, Scott knows absolutely nothing about Cameron, not where they live, or his last name, nothing.

I loved how the Djinn would drop in occasionally with cute vague hints for Scott. The day they are together is the predictable part. I was sitting there with a contented sigh and BOOM! The twist start coming in. Oh, my Gosh I cried and cried!

I can’t think of a thing I didn’t like. I would love more of this Djinn and see what kind of romantic magic he could do.

If you like sweet romance, Magic, Djinn’s, believe in soul-mates, want a good cry and some loving , hot, fun, mansex, you MUST read this.

Blurb: Freed by his master, running for his life toward a new beginning, Androcles takes refuge from a wolf pack in a cave, not realizing it is already occupied…by a wounded lion. While self-preservation tells him to flee, the majestic animal’s pain makes him hesitate, and when the beast transforms into an equally magnificent man, Androcles knows he has to render aid.

Thus begins a new adventure for the man seeking only autonomy and a place of his own in the world. In Okyin Androcles sees everything he is running from—a man- beast who could, with passion and his commanding presence, easily enslave another. A masterful lover able to seduce Androcles into wanting whatever he can get, even into wanting what he cannot have—or should not even desire. A superior being who causes the lines between freedom and slavery to blur, and causes a true crisis to an already damaged spirit. Unable to believe in the peace and sanctuary Okyin offers, Androcles knows he has no choice but to once more flee.

Lisa’s Review: Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥3.5Hearts

This is the first book by Anya Richards that I have read and it was a great start. I must admit though that it was missing something for me to truly love. It was a bit hard to understand it at first but once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. I suppose if there was a bit more explanation in the lion’s way that it might have made it a bit easier.

Androcles had been taken from his home and made to service women and men, and then his last master Cato had bought him. He serviced his master’s needs, but what he had wanted was his heart and freedom. On the day Cato was dying, he gave Androcles his freedom. He had told him to run and escape. He had somehow ended up in a cave after escaping a pack of wolves only to find himself in front of an injured lion. He thought he was going to lose it when the lion took the form of a gorgeous man.

Okyin had not remembered that he had taken his lion form, so now he feared that he would have to take Androcles’s life. However, what he wanted was his love. He offered him safety and protection in exchange for his silence, but it was also to keep the man he wanted besides him. The problem was Androcles couldn’t let the past go. So it was up to Okyin to show him the way.

This was a blast to read. I had a bit of difficulty with it, but I think I would love to check out the rest of Anya’s stories.

I would recommend reading this if you love sexy men, tender hearts, lion shifters, a bit of danger, a touch of excitement and surprises.
Prime’s Review: Heart Rating: ♥♥♥3Hearts

This book is just about everything I love – historical fantasy (there was almost the opportunity to give an alternate history, too, but we did not get that) and shape shifters. I enjoyed this one – truly, I did – the only problem I had was that this was written as first person in present tense. I’m not a huge fan of first person despite the fact I read enough of it but I really only like first person written in past tense. But I was able to ignore my dislike the first person present tense enough to at least enjoy this novella from start to end.

Androcles is an interesting one, he’s been a slave all his life and only recently freed when mortal danger came upon him. Androcles is also a realist, so he knows if he gets caught, no one will believe that he was freed by his master. Okyin, a lion shifter, is a sweet man with a heart of gold. He’s been wandering the known world after leaving his tribe for a time.

Okyin comes across as somewhat naive, or perhaps just innocent despite the fact that he has known violence. He also has a magical calmness about him, that’s the best I can do, so I hope that makes sense. Regardless, I really enjoyed his character and would have loved to have known more about him and his clan. Because of the POV, Okyin’s character was lacking and mostly because I wanted to know his perspective.

The fact that this is set in the time of Julius Caesar and the Roman Empire is just incidental, and while I love the idea of that I think it would have been cool to have a bit more involvement of the time. This is really a book that could happen at any time in history, or even in some created universe, which is why I think the involvement of the time its set in is lacking. Probably if it was longer, this would have been the case, but nonetheless this is a hot and fascinating read.

Review: My, oh my! What a tale this one was. I feel like I went back in time when I used to read Red Riding Hood, Snow White, and The Grim Brothers’ fairytales. And as you probably have seen from the blurb the speech of the text is written in such a manner that makes you fall right in that trap, using the mannerisms of the 18 century, and traveling in haze through time in that very place when the Tale of the Headless Horseman first took the breath of life. God, I’m affected by it myself.

So, what do you make of the Legend of the Sleeping Hollow? How do you think all started? Did you ever think to yourself that there could possibly be lovers involved? That their wicked and tricky minds could have worked together to perhaps take advantage from the folk’s tales.

But things were not so easy. It was a strong rivalry before it turned to passion and unadulterated love. They were enemies before they became the ultimate lovers, such the world had never seen before.

Meet Ichabod Crane, Schoolmaster and quite the gentleman. Known for his stern ways, his impeccable control, and his vivid imagination. Currently courting Miss Katrina Van Tassel not because she’s beautiful or he in love, but due to her charming wealth that will accompany her. Ambition is an awful treat, but one Ichabod cannot deny.

Enter Ichabod’s rival, Brom Bones. Not only is he courting dear Katrina, but also he is insistently tormenting and teasing Ichabod. The awful man is bound to humiliate and utterly break Ichabod in every way. Unfortunately, for Ichabod, he’s succeeding.

After a gathering that had Ichabod hopes high for winning Miss Katrina when to Hell and beyond when said darling miss completely dismissed him and his attentions, Ichabod has been left to walk through the rumored favorite paths of the Headless Horseman. His imagination ran wild fueling his fear, a fear so strong that made his heart nearly jump out of his chest when the ghost came chasing him and captured him. But the ghost did not behead him, no; this particular ghost’s intentions were far more sinister.

And thus begins a wonderful erotic tale, filled to the brim with hot scenes, kinky and somewhat painful, although always they ended in rapturous pleasure. This is how this tale will blow your mind; right after it has lured you with all that ghostly things. And before you know it, you’ll be lost in the haze, you’ll feel as if you’re living in the book, the mists and the chills will run through you without a doubt, just as if the sensual scenes will make you hot.

I loved this book, can you tell? I loved it from start to finish. If only Ichabod wasn’t such a shallow prick at the beginning, he made me want to slap him, and when Katrina dumped him cold, I admit it, I was so damned satisfied the book instantly got real high in my praise. But it had to be like that, and it gave such an authenticity to all characters. They all felt like the real deal, hence why I loved this so much.

For me this was an excellent re-told tale, one I strongly recommend to all fans of the genre. I immensely enjoyed a very, very remarkable read.

Review: Sleep, Beauty, Glass, Snow are the titles of the four fairy-tales that have been re-written with a unique modern day twist. In Sleep, we have Prince Tristen cursed to sleep for a hundred years until his true love (Jae, a photographer/journalist in a sports car) re-awakens him and his kingdom. In Beauty, we find Finn who loves to cook, traded to a beast for his father’s life who discovers the heart beneath the beast, Prince Samuel. In Glass, we have Payne who is sick of being treated like a slave and wishes for a better life and meets his very own prince, Hayden. In Snow, we have Mason who loves to snowboard, his stepmother tries to be rid of him, Mason discovers seven snowboarders, and one of them is his knight in shining armor.

Each story we read gives us a unique modern twist, each story is changed slightly to fit more into modern times but sticks to the fairy-tale love. With Sleep it begins in the traditional setting with the birth of the much longed for child and the curse that was uttered at his birth celebration, fast forward and we have Jae who is sent to discover the truth about a sleeping kingdom. It’s a very sweet story, although you have to question the stupidity of someone trusting a stranger who promises to make you ‘feel good’. The sweetness of the story comes from Jae and Prince Tristen getting to know each other before getting their happily ever after.

In Beauty, it really stays with the traditional story with the generous youngest sibling Finn, the more selfish older brothers and sisters and the slightly bumbling father, and the horrific beast. So not much to add to it other than it was sweet.

In Glass, we have a thoroughly modern update including mouthy fairy godfather, foul-mouthed CinderFella, Payne, hunky Prince Hayden and very selfish stepmother and stepsisters. Very fast moving storyline in this one with Payne and Hayden discovering an instant attraction and connection.

In Snow, the story is twisted with Mason’s prince charming being one of the snowboarders, the evil stepmother not giving a damn about anything but herself and Mason’s father, James, just wanting the pair of them to get along. It’s a good story that has its bones in the original but swerves away from the original enough to give it a fresh twist.

Each story has sweet lovemaking in it, happy endings and perfect couples, so this is one you want to read if you want modern twists to your fairy-tales but some originality laced through them, with loads of hot men and sigh worthy endings.

Review: A fun and unique twist on classic fairy tales. The author not only successfully turned the main characters in to m/m romances, but did an interesting and sometimes humorous, sometimes edgy job of weaving contemporary settings and scenarios into our favorite classic childhood stories. You’ll never think of Snow White the same way again!

Review:  Short, Sexy and Steamy! My three favorite colors! This is the prequel to Haunted Passions and introduces us to Brom, John and Katrina. It can be read as a standalone Novella, but I strongly urge that you follow it up with the more full length novel, Haunted Passions.

Brom is still recovering from the loss of his lover during the war when the Enigmatic new school teacher, John Crane, arrives in town. Brom is immediately drawn to John’s innocence, and even though he’s an educated man he has a naiveté’ about him that reel’s Brom in even further.

John hides his attraction to Brom initially until the pair shares a glass of whiskey and a passionate kiss. Then Brom slips and address’s John as his former lover while THEY are making love, quite possibly destroying any chance he had of building something with the sexy school teacher before it even begins. But loving another man is dangerous enough as it is. Even if John can get past Brom’s slip of the tongue, so to speak, can he get past the lying and sneaking around for the few stolen moments he and Brom can share?

Blending into the background we have Katrina Van Tassel, quietly planting herself into Brom’s life as well as John’s. Given the name of the town is Sleepy Hollow and the names of the characters, it’s almost immediately obvious that Rose is giving the Headless Horseman classic tale a revamp, with a heavy dose of M/M action

Review:  Mark “Sinders” Sintorella is a throwaway kid who landed on his feet.  He might not have a glamorous life, working as a housekeeper in a ritzy resort, but he is saving money and one day he’ll be able to attend a fashion design school and really start living his dreams.

This is my favorite read this week…so far; a modern retelling of Cinderella…kinda.  There are no wicked stepmothers or evil step sisters, but there is a quirky fairy god father and a handsome prince, a bit of cross-dressing and mistaken identity and a lot of fun.

This is one of those books that would make a great made for TV movie.  Mark has been on his own since he was sixteen.  He learned the hard way that sometimes being invisible is a good thing.  He works hard, and is happy to stay in the background.  Falling in with Mr. Pennymaker’s mad schemes is fun and seemingly harmless.  In truth, the potential to meet high rollers in the fashion industry is an opportunity too tempting to pass up.  Falling in love with Ash is not in his five-year-plan.  Especially, given that Ash is deep in the closet and looking for a wife…of the female variety.

Ash has never had a reason to advertise his orientation.  On rare occasions, he pays discreet men to scratch that itch.  Not until Sinder did it occur to him that he could live a life other than the one laid out for him by his parents.  And the whole marriage clause in his grandfather’s will isn’t helping.  It’s hard to build a relationship, when you’re courting another woman.

The support cast of players are cute…especially Ash’s mom.  I can see her at a Pride Rally, as long as she has the right thing to wear.

Tara Lain is brilliant.  She writes love stories that feed my romantic soul.  Sinders and Ash is sweet and sexy and I highly recommend it.  I hope she is somewhere thinking of other poor charges that Mr. Pennymaker can work a little magic for.

Blurb: A CinderFella Story

It’s all fun and games until somebody loses a shoe…

Eldon Cinder would give anything to see Prince Xavier one last time, but only women are invited to the royal ball. When the local witch offers to make Eldon female for just one night, he agrees.

One spell. One night. One dance.

What could possibly go wrong?

Review: Ooooohhhhhh this is ssssssoooooo sweet and it is a fantastic twist to Cinderfella. Eldon Cinder is treated like a slave by his aunt and 2 cousins, when he meets Prince Xavier in the woods they strike up a friendship and become good friends.

This was really well written and I loved the twist of the cousin being mistaken for the missing girl, ooohhh aaahhh, you know this would make a great Pantomime. This is sweet, cute and marshmallow-y (don’t think that’s a real word), Eldon has always left a treat for the witch in the woods so for one night she gives him the chance to see Xavier one last time, what follows is a comedy of errors that leads us to a wonderful ending where the Prince marries the girl/man of his dreams.

Both characters are really good and although the romance is slow, the friendship is the main selling point for me, they got to know each other and respect each other as people instead of Prince and Servant and there was a foundation for their relationship to build upon. The cousins were really hateable (nicely done), the aunt forgettable and Milton the dog was the star of the show.

This one I recommend to those who love fairy-tales, fantasy, cousins getting what they deserve, sneaky Princes and a happy ever after.

Review:  I have read plenty of GLBT “fairy tales, and have yet to find one that really floats my boat…until now.  I loved fairy tales as a child and read them well into high-school and beyond.  Not the Disney variety, but the dark tales of the Brothers Grimm and the magical stories of Andrew Grey.  This is a tale that could fit nicely into a canon of classical tales.

Érard is the eldest of royal triplets.  The young men have been sent on a quest by their father, the king.  Not long after beginning his journey, Érard is swept overboard and presumed dead.  But, of course, Érard is not dead.  That would have made for a very short tale indeed.  Instead he finds himself in a deserted place and wanders until he stumbles onto the home of Cat, a beautiful magical creature.

The language of this tale is phenomenal.  An air of mystery shrouds the entire piece.  Little by little, the bits fall into place until the required happily ever after is achieved.

Like all good fairy tales, sex is alluded to more than shown, so if you’re looking for an erotic story…this ain’t it.  What this is is an extremely well paced, entertaining story where good vanquishes evil and love conquers all.  Brilliant!!!

Blurb: By the time Galen Olaf-kin woke up and smelled the spiced ale, it was too late, and he never finished the wicked deed for which he stood trial. Banished from his home, he flees to the forest, taking nothing but the unwanted infant he’s rescued. Perhaps the legends are true and the forest lord will take them both in. The lord is said to give sanctuary to outcasts, but none of the stories mention the naughty, tempting things he whispers, or that he shares Galen’s forbidden passions.

Lord Erik rolls his eyes at the prophecy that says when human hands deliver a babe to the forest, he’ll meet the mate destined to reunite forest folk with humankind. What interest has he in a child? The handsome human who brings the babe is another matter entirely, and a little thing like destiny won’t stand in Erik’s way of claiming the golden-haired Galen as his own. Or will it?

Sometimes prophecies are overrated, legends incomplete, and heroes not always the sharpest swords in the scabbard.

Review: Galen is banished from his village and chased into the forest for a crime he didn’t commit; he’s also been given the task by the village’s wise woman to deliver a baby to the Lord of the forest. Lord Erik is impatiently biding his time for his mate to show up and in the meantime he is trying to civilize his pack.

I loved these characters as they are cheeky, funny and adorable, they are also both quite clueless but are helped along by Erik’s aunt Eydis and the Seer Jarl. In fact, all the characters in the forest are brilliant.   The villagers are sneaky, mean and nasty and they certainly get what they deserve at the end.

Eden Winters has written a charming, engaging, witty, funny and loveable story which is well plotted out, has enjoyable characters and will make you giggle. One of my favorite parts has got to be the inner monologue between Lord Erik and his wolf, they are just so funny.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves romance, wolf shifters, comedy, hot sex and well m/m in general because this is a truly incredible light read.
