Review: Ocean of Secrets is a historical MM romance by Jerry Sacher. It is a thoroughly enjoyable ride and will appeal to anyone that is into stories in the early twentieth century. Also, this will appeal to anyone who has been looking for the MM version of the movie Titanic.

Honestly, that description fits.

The story follows Scots nobleman Andrew Elliot, who has been caught in a rather compromising position with one of the local land manager’s sons, pretty standard stuff – the nobleman being caught with the help type of deal. Now his father has found Andrew a bride and is sending him off to America with his fiancé and the fiancé’s brother for company. And before you think it, no, there is no romance when it comes to the fiancé’s brother. Andrew’s father has sent him off to London so that he can board the Titanic to New York.

Then there is Matthew. He’s a poor Irish lad. His parents have died and his only brother is a shipyard worker and cannot support his younger sibling. So Matthew decides to make his own fortunes. He decides the best way to do that is find a way to America – Titanic happens to be perfect – where he could move to Texas or somewhere out West to become a cowboy.

Obviously, we all know what happens to the Titanic. And I’m going to admit that I was at first reluctant to read this one, so checked the ending to see if it was a HEA before investing myself in this book. I’m shallow like that. The adventure is what happens to bring the two men together. Then their brief romance on the ocean before the Titanic sinks to the ocean floor – then of course there is also the fall out of this event.

The only criticism I have to make is I don’t think quite enough drama was placed on the plot line surrounding Andrew’s fiancé and brother. It probably would have injected a lot more feeling into the relationship between Andrew and Matthew if there was more drama other than dropping hints of the rather obvious way in which to dispose the characters (and I’m not talking about the iceberg either).

It’s 1986, and what should have been the greatest summer of Nate Bradford’s life goes sour when his parents suddenly divorce. Now, instead of spending his senior year in his hometown of Austin, Texas, he’s living with his father in Warren, Wyoming, population 2,833 (and Nate thinks that might be a generous estimate). There’s no swimming pool, no tennis team, no mall—not even any MTV. The entire school’s smaller than his graduating class back home, and in a town where the top teen pastimes are sex and drugs, Nate just doesn’t fit in.

Then Nate meets Cody Lawrence. Cody’s dirt-poor, from a broken family, and definitely lives on the wrong side of the tracks. Nate’s dad says Cody’s bad news. The other kids say he’s trash. But Nate knows Cody’s a good kid who’s been dealt a lousy hand. In fact, he’s beginning to think his feelings for Cody go beyond friendship.

Admitting he might be gay is hard enough, but between small-town prejudices and the growing AIDS epidemic dominating the headlines, a town like Warren, Wyoming, is no place for two young men to fall in love.

Blurb: A feisty, untrained Dominant shows up at Hampton Road. Could he be the right man who Colin’s been saving himself for?
Submissive Colin loves his new life and job at The Hampton Road Club. He doesn’t mean to make the staff angry when he reorganizes everything or frustrate the available Masters by never letting them touch him. He only wants to serve someone, to make them happy, but he’s also waiting for the right man the way his grandmother had advised him to do before she died.

Another night, another brawl. Roddy had hoped that Hollywood would have better male prospects than Louisville when it came to playing rough. When Roddy’s latest would-be conquest threatens him with bodily harm, Roddy is chased right into the path of two of Hampton Road’s Masters, Ned and Aaron. They describe a wonderful club to him, where sadomasochistic men can enjoy each other, hidden safely behind the walls of an elegant mansion.

The moment Colin and Roddy spot each other, they fall hard and fast. While Master Saul is thrilled that Colin has finally found someone, what do any of them really know about their new guest?
It seems that Saul’s fears are ungrounded until tragedy strikes in Roddy’s world. It’s then that the validity of Colin and Roddy’s new love is truly tested.

Was their bond real, or did Roddy have another agenda he’d kept secret all along?

Review: If the cover isn’t hot enough to make you pick this up, and the blurb doesn’t entice you more than let me tell you…just do it! That is if you like mild BDSM and very sweet romance.

I fell in love sweet little Colin in the last book when he was brought in by Ned. Who wouldn’t love a darling little fella that wants to save himself until he meets the right man, yet yearns to taste the life he sees around him? Plus, as sweet as he is there is a touch of mischief and his OCD is too cute.

Now let’s toss in a young man who likes sex a bit rough and ends up getting roughed up every time he tries to fulfill his need. Being gay in the 20’s is bad enough…liking things a little rougher is…well, rougher.

We get a bit more Aaron and Ned and, of course, Saul. I loved seeing Saul’s fatherly instincts come to the forefront. This book is a bit milder than the rest BDSM and Sadomasochism wise as we have to men learning to love and to explore this side of themselves.
If you like a really sweet romance, the 1920’s setting, first times, true love, love at first sight and some pretty hot man-sex you will love this.

Note: This is book 5 in the series and is best read in order though this one you could possibly follow OK, I still recommend you read them in order to understand and know all the characters better.

Review: This is the third book in The Swordsmen series.

Hartley has feelings for Randall but is not sure if it is love as he does not know what love feels like. He has a troubled past that interferes with these feelings. Randall wants Hartley but knows Hartley is troubled.

I really liked that these two eventually talked and brought everything out in the open. They seemed to be exactly what the other needed in a time of unrest and not knowing what will happen next. Randall showed Hartley that is capable of love.

Well written.

Review: I’m not really into historicals unless there i something else mixed in it. That being said this was a fast paced book with a slow build up on the romance. It takes place in Victorian times and was well detailed.

Basically this story was about forbidden love in a time of war and having to hide it. Lord Duncan Aldham has no use for women who simply do his bidding without hesitation. He is confused yet fascinated by the new stable hand William Fossett.

It was o.k. read.

Thomas is furious with himself for not protecting the beautiful young submissive whose company he’d enjoyed on a few occasions. He’s relieved that there have been some recent changes to help protect the men who offer themselves at the sadomasochism club. It’s about time to bring Hampton Road into the progressive age of the 1920’s. Now that the new rules are in place, perhaps he can woo Linus into giving him a chance.

As Thomas goes out of his way to be kind to him, Linus wonders if he’s misjudged the Master. He’s still not sure if there’s a future for them. What if he never wants to surrender to another man? When he allows Thomas to teach him the joys of Dominance and submission, Linus discovers that he not only wants to surrender, he wants to be claimed permanently. If only Thomas’ old life doesn’t come back to haunt them and destroy their chance of being together forever.

Review: Tomas has recently been hurt by the man he loved. His last sub left him for another. He has had his eye on Linus but realizing too late his feelings, Linus gets hurt. Hurt enough to make him afraid of dominate men, and the Hampton Road Club.

Linus was wary of the Hampton Road Club when his date brought him there and still not sure why Ned thought this would be the place for Linus. When he was under the control of master Thomas, Linus felt things he never thought he would…or should. Then things went to hell in a handbasket for Linus. (you need to read book two to see what happened.)

Both men need something the other could give. Both men are afraid to reach out and take what is right in front of them. Will Linus ever be able to submit again? Will Thomas ever be able to love again?

The Fear of Surrender is book three of the Hampton Road Club, and you do need to read this series in order as there are recurring characters and the story lines. This book you especially need to read book two. I like how each Dominate in this series is so different. Each has his needs, and it shows. Thomas doesn’t want a 24/7 sub like Saul and Aaron.

I also liked that this book stepped out of the club a lot and showed more about the feelings of these two men. I loved Thomas before now I am even more in love!

This book did have more of the 1920’s feel I missed in the last book with the houses and cars and other nuances. I absolutely love this series and am ready to dive into the next book.

Warning this is BDSM. There are some fetishes in each book. This one has figging and piercing. Both scenes were tastefully written and scorching hot.

The Philippines, 1946

After being discharged from the Marines, John Buchanan is offered a position as overseer for plantation owner Ignacio Saenz. The offer is unexpected, considering he knows nothing about coconut farming, but the presence of Mount Mayon, an active volcano within sight of the property, tips the scales in Ignacio’s favor. Finally John has a chance to put his lifelong passion for vulcanology into practice.

Gregorio Delgado, the current overseer, takes exception to this turn of events. He views John as an interloper and Ignacio’s offer as a thinly disguised excuse to marry off one of his six daughters. What neither of them expects is the powerful physical attraction that simmers between them. Could John be a kindred spirit, or is he just using Gregorio for his knowledge of farming to ingratiate himself with his potential father-in-law?

As John and Gregorio begin a tour of the haciendas, John discovers he has far more in common with his new acquaintance than he thought possible. Torn between honor and desire, John struggles to define who he is and what Gregorio could mean to him. Like the unpredictable volcano, equal parts beauty and danger, Gregorio becomes an obsession that could erupt at any minute and destroy them both.

Review: I wished that I could say that this rocked, but I didn’t much care for it. I should have also paid attention that it was historical even though it comes off a bit different than many others do. It has a lot of mystery surrounding it and some hot romance which pulls you in.

Will and Kit are sexy and sweet. I was surprised with their names but they fit them both. The chemistry was hot and sexy. They were fully developed with a lot of details. Their story spans over a few years and flowed perfectly for the story. Although I have to say the pace was a lot better than I had expected. It kept up the story and didn’t give a boring tone to it at all.

There were some parts of the story that even though it caught my attention, it was not favored. You can’t really give too much information without giving the story away though.

Now even though I said the heat between them was hot and sexy, there really wasn’t a lot of sex in the story. It was a complicated type of story and didn’t really pull me in as it should.

Other than my issues with the story this was a very intriguing story that if you like historicals you will definitely want to read it. It is a well written piece that makes you feel like you are right there in that time and place.

I would definitely recommend it, but it wasn’t for me.

Review: Heath has just graduated Yale. His parents have his life planned. They want him to work for his father and get married and have children to carry on their name. They even have a sweet girl they like chosen for him. They are giving him a choice of his job, but he has to choose after the summer.

His friend Frankie takes him out to celebrate his birthday. He thinks he has found a place perfect for Heath. It is a speakeasy for like-minded men like Heath. Though Frankie brought him there to meet up with Heaths college crush Julian, Heath quickly fell for the owner. In a time of prohibition and when it’s dangerous for gay men can have this relationship last or will Heath chooses to follow his parent’s wishes.

Speakeasy a beautifully written story of the prohibition eras which is my favorite historical period. Suzy Ingold does an excellent job giving the book that nostalgic feel. Speakeasy is character driven as we follow Heath through his summer and his decisions. It’s very clean with no sex, but a beautiful, bittersweet romance with a satisfying ending.

If you like the 1920 prohibition era, coming of age, new adult, clean stories, I think you will like this one!

Review: I am going to be fair and admit I am not a big fan of war books. The blurb led me to think this would be interesting. And it was. Louise needs to be applauded at the detail of all the war scenes. She must have spent hours and hours in research. The scenes were lifelike, and I could almost imagine myself in these old planes fighting Germans.

The characters are interesting as well. I was hoping for more relationship and interaction among the men instead of all the war scenes. The few scenes that did focus on the men were intriguing. I just wanted more.

However, the sex was hot! I don’t know which was hottest, The first between Jimmy and Fillip long time committed lovers, the scene Jeff saw them in the shadows and watched or the scene with the three of them (that was smoking!)

If you like war stories, Historical settings, military men, action, and some smoking hot man-sex this is for you. It just wasn’t my cup of tea.

In June of 1978 Grady Ormond, eighteen-year-old son of diplomat Peter Ormond, accompanies his father to his new posting as US Ambassador to Pakistan. Neighboring Iran is on the brink of a civil war, with the monarchy in danger of being overthrown.

Grady will be leaving for New York City in late August to study cinematography and has been warned to keep his homosexual orientation tightly under wraps while on vacation. Repercussions in the predominantly Islamic region could be severe.

On their first night in Karachi, his father hosts a cocktail party to meet the local dignitaries. Grady is introduced to His Highness Prince Kamran Izadi, nephew of the Shah of Iran. Twenty-three-year-old Kamran has recently returned from the UK, where he spent eleven years, first as a student, and then as a financial analyst.

The attraction is immediate—unforeseen and dangerously powerful—but neither one dares to make a move. Odds are so stacked against them it’s futile to even entertain a friendship, but they do, and their world tilts precariously.

With his country in turmoil and Grady about to leave for college, Kamran makes a decision that will change their lives forever.

Review: This is the first time I have read a story by this author so I was not sure what to expect. Usually I avoid them but I have heard good things about her so I knew I had to at least see. Then the second problem came when I realized it was a historical romance. I have never been a fan of them only because they come off so dry and boring. However I actually found myself enjoying this story.

I have read a few things on the Middle East, so I knew what would happen if they were found out. So I pretty much was on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what was going to happen next. This story actually did a pretty good job of keeping it straight, so to speak.

Grady is the son of a diplomat and is about to go to Pakistan with his family. He was warned to never let anyone know that he is gay over there. He is told to keep it quiet because the punishment would be harsh if anyone ever knew. Then Grady meets the Prince at a party held by his father and he is in deep trouble. It would seem Kamran feels the same way and also knows what will happen if it is ever found out.

Kamran is from Iran and knows full well of the dangers if anyone found out that he was gay. He is trying to spend what freedom he has left having a bit of fun. Then he is being forced in to an arranged marriage. To be gay is a death sentence so the two must hide what they feel or they will both die.

Now my main problem was the fact that Grady flirted with Kamran, and I felt like slapping him silly. He definitely comes off as a teenager.
He was warned over and over not to flirt, and he said he understood it. However he kept on doing it, which would have gotten them killed if this had not been a romance story. He was well written as was Kamran. They were fully developed and had a lot of depth to them both. It felt like I was right there with them. Still wanted to smack the shit out of Grady though.

The story was very well written and definitely sparked my interest. It felt like I was right there with them, going to the markets and seeing all those people. Although I think I would rather stay in America that is for sure. Over all I must say that Grady was an idiot throughout the whole story and it definitely was fun to read about him. I still say that historicals will never be a story that I would want to read.

My attention was not as captivated as it should have been but only because it was not my favorite type of story. I like my guys a bit older, a bit wiser and a bit more sex. Also I am one for more modern type of stuff that this story did not have. I have to say that I never really thought 1970s would be historical but it was fun to hear it. I did enjoy this story to a point, but it was not for me.

However it is definitely worth reading and I would recommend it.

The Innocent Auction

Victoria Sue

London 1810.

Their love was a death sentence.

Deacon, Viscount Carlisle, was aware of the slums and gin-lanes of London. Just as he was aware of the underground traffic that furnished the brothels and bath houses with human innocents. He was also aware that the so-called justice system would hang the accused without much of an attempt at a defense, unless the unfortunate had deep pockets to pay for it.

He just hadn’t expected to be directly involved in any of it.

It started with a plea for help and ended with forbidden love, the love between a Viscount and a stable-boy. An impossible love and a guarantee of the hangman’s noose.

Will Deacon fight for Tom? Will he risk the death sentence and take that fight from the stately halls of his English mansion to the horrors of Newgate Prison and the slums of London?

Or will he realize that if he doesn’t, death will be a welcome end to the loneliness of the sentence he is already living?

Review: I am not really sure what to say about this story. I never read nor review historical novels. They always seem to lack something to me. Maybe it is because I am more the modern computer type person with a little paranormal added in me. However Victoria always manages to capture the attention of her readers and leave them with more feelings than they started out with.

It shows many things in this story that will show you just how we have changed. The guys go through so much more with their sexuality then they do these days. In the time where there is so much poverty that you never have enough food on your plate to getting killed for loving another man. It just makes me sick.

Deacon has always done what he could to stay safe, following the rules but his best friend doesn’t. He will do everything to help his friends, that is for sure. Beau somehow gets his ass in trouble, so Deacon needs to find a way to get him rescued from an underground auction. He ends up purchasing a young boy. He helps him by sending him to his family.

Five years later he goes to his family home to deal with his father’s death. Only to find out that the young boy he sent there is now a man. A man who calls to him in more ways than one. Now I was not happy with what happened with Beau so it made the story a bit harder to read. I don’t like stories that have a sadness to them.

An although the author gives you a story with a great plot, she makes her characters fully developed with a lot of attraction to them.

I can say that this story was amazing, but it was not for me. I have come to the conclusion that I still don’t much care for historical stories. It was well researched from what I can tell and shows the dangers of what happens to those who are gay. It was well written and will grab your attention from the start. That is, if you are into historicals.

I look forward, however, to reading more by this author.

Lessons for Sleeping Dogs

(Cambridge Fellowship Mysteries)
by

Charlie Cochrane

Cambridge, 1921

When amateur sleuth Jonty Stewart comes home with a new case to investigate, his partner Orlando Coppersmith always feels his day has been made. Although, can there be anything to solve in the apparent mercy killing of a disabled man by a doctor who then kills himself, especially when everything takes place in a locked room?

But things are never straightforward where the Cambridge fellows are concerned, so when they discover that more than one person has a motive to kill the dead men—motives linked to another double death—their wits get stretched to the breaking point.

And when the case disinters long buried memories for Jonty, memories about a promise he made and hasn’t kept, their emotions get pulled apart as well. This time, Jonty and Orlando will have to separate fact from fiction—and truth from emotion—to get to the bottom of things.
