The Art of Hero Worship

by

Mia Kerick

Trembling on the floor, pressed beneath a row of seats in a dark theater, college freshman Jason Tripp listens to the terrifying sound of gunshots, as an unknown shooter moves methodically through the theater, randomly murdering men, women, and children attending a student performance of Hamlet. Junior Liam Norcross drapes his massive body on top of Jason, sheltering the younger man from the deathly hail of bullets, risking his life willingly and maybe even eagerly.

As a result of the shared horror, an extraordinary bond forms between the two young men, which causes discomfort for family and friends, as well as for Jason and Liam, themselves. And added to the challenge of two previously “straight” men falling into a same-sex love, are the complications that arise from the abundance of secrets Liam holds with regard to a past family tragedy. The fledgling passion between the men seems bound to fade away into the darkness from which it emerged.

Jason, however, is inexplicably called to rescue his hero in return, by delving into Liam’s shady past and uncovering the mystery that compels the older man to act as the college town’s selfless savior.

The Art of Hero Worship takes the reader on a voyage from the dark and chilling chaos that accompanies a mass shooting to the thrill of an unexpected and sensual romance.

Review: Oh my goodness, but I enjoyed this book! Yes, I thought the blurb made it sound like it’d be a good one, but I wasn’t really prepared to be blown away. I am so glad I was wrong.

Let me give you a quick rundown. Raven (Ok, that’s his porn name, his real name is Finlay) was a porn star. He always wears kilts, and that was quite popular with the viewers. Unfortunately, there was an accident, and he’s now scarred. He also has lost his sex drive and his confidence. In order to pay his rent, he begins to market himself as a no-sex-ever escort. The story starts with him being absolutely miserable the date for the high school reunion of a rude, nasty man.

Caleb has his own business working with heating and air conditioning. One of his contracts is the hotel where that reunion is taking place. He is called to repair Raven’s ac unit in his room. He, himself, is rather miserable because he’s so far in the closet, he’s actually UNDER it. His family (especially his mother) is pressuring him to setting down with a nice woman and start putting out babies.

That’s as far as I’ll go. No spoilers here. Just let me say, when Raven and Caleb meet the first time, there are fiery sparks between them. In fact, Raven does something hilarious to meet with Caleb again. I loved both MC’s. They tore at my heart. Each one of them was so broken, but once they meet, they begin to put each other back together again. Their romance is both tender and hot. I mean smoking hot.

They have wonderful chemistry, and the scenes are well placed in the story. There was nothing gratuitous about them. It feels like this is “instalove”, but it really isn’t. Sometimes, there is such a deep and overwhelming attraction that it can’t be contained.

The plot is well thought out and interesting. Raven and Caleb each have a head for business, and they’ve very smart. The background characters are divided into two categories. Friendly and hilarious or stomach churningly (I made up that word.) annoying. It’s a perfect balance, and they enrich the story, rather than being intrusive.

All in all, I will tell you “Tartan Candy” is a great read. It grabs from the very beginning and holds on until you see the words “The End”. It’s the first book I’ve read from K.C. Burn, and I intend to read more of her stories.

Highly recommended!

Review: Sebastien has taken a significant step. Even bigger than going far from home to college, but wanting to be completely himself. He isn’t ready to come out to his family, but he figured if he lived so far way that perhaps he could keep that secret for a while longer. He heard about a peer of his that had come to Falcon Pointe, come out and found love. He is hoping Trent can, at least, be a friend to help him along the way.

He likes the men at 959 Benton Street and is happy to get a room there. He likes one of the roommates but isn’t sure he would be interested in an inexperienced young man besides he is sure David is the one straight one at the house.

I love the diversity of these characters. I especially liked David’s difference and how it was handled in the story. When I began reading I felt the story was very similar to the first, and then once we got established, it changed up a lot. There are some Amish issues, family issues, but this one is more character driven with life issues. I also thought this one had a little less angst and, of course, it’s a beautifully written sweet romance.

If you like the Amish, unique characters, coming out, gay weddings, discipline lifestyles, cute puppies and, of course, don’t forget some hot man-sex, I think you will really like this series.

I do suggest you read them in order, so you know who all these characters are.

Blurb: Kyle’s best friend Marshall resurfaces and he’s in a lot of trouble. Can the men at Kiss of Leather convince a former Dom to take on the mouthy sub?

Master Derek and his new sub Corey have signed a contract and enjoy their first scene together. The love between them is strong and Derek is as protective of his boy as ever. The only thing left that would make their world perfect would be to bring Corey’s ex-Dom and abuser to justice.

The legal firm that represents Kiss of Leather is charged with hiring a private investigator to flush out the man who orchestrated Corey’s gang rape. Stone Manning is hesitant to take the job, though. He was once wrongly accused in the death of a sub and swore never to enter a BDSM club again. But he owes attorney Glen Sharp his life after the lawyer got him acquitted.

Their meeting is disrupted when Kyle’s missing friend Marshall calls for help. Master Josh promises to help the mouthy Marshall get back on his feet under one condition—Marshall must sign a six month D/s contract as a full-time sub and prove he can fully submit to a man as well as learn to respect those around him.

Stone Manning suddenly finds himself charged with taming the brattiest sub ever. In truth, the bigger the brat, the more his heart races with excitement. Marshall promises to be just the type of challenge to inspire Stone to be a Master again. As Stone learns more about him, he sees the pain that Marshall has always tried to numb with drugs and alcohol. Stone also sees a man he could love—if he can ever reach him.

In the meantime, Stone and his investigative partner, Chuck, continue to search for Corey’s attacker. The abusive Dom appears to have gone underground. But what they don’t realize is that the closer they get to their prey, the more dangerous he becomes.

Reader Advisory: This book contains references to drug and alcohol abuse.

NOTE: book is available for early download now through Pride Publishing exclusively.

Review: PI Stone Manning hasn’t lived the life, stepped foot into a club, worked a scene… nothing since he was falsely accused in the death of a Sub. His friend and attorney, Glen Sharp got an acquittal of course, but the memory has left Stone regretful and determined to stay away from the whole D/S lifestyle. Then Glen asks Stone to work a case for a club Glen represents, Kiss of Leather. Stone is hesitant, even walking into the club and meeting the owners, he is hesitant. Then he meets Corey and decides that he has to help find the abusive Dom that hurt the young man. The owners of Kiss of Leather want something beyond Stone’s amazing PI skills though, they want him to put the leather back on and tame a very defiant Sub.

Marshall disappeared not long after Kyle and Gavin got together. He had kind of lost control of his life and he was lashing out at the people that cared about him. When he winds up in a holding cell, the threat of real jail time hanging over his head, he reaches out to Josh his former Dom, and asks for help. Josh is more than happy to help, under one condition. Marshall will have to answer to Stone for the next six months. Of course Marshall is livid, but what choice does he have, he has nowhere else to go.

The two men don’t want to like each other, not even a little. But Stone can see the scared and hurt man that lies just under the surface of all that defiance and anger. Marshall is still angry with himself for what happened with Josh, and for just turning his back on his friends. It’s hard for him to admit he was wrong and it’s hard for him to obey Stone, but with each day it gets easier. Stone commands compliance, but Marshall can see that he truly cares. As Stone and Marshall grow closer, so does Corey’s former Dom. For the first time in a long time, Marshall thinks about someone other than himself, and it just might be the last time.

Both of these guys have been out of the game for a while, neither thinking they would ever live the lifestyle again. Stone settles back into his dominant personality immediately, and of course, Marshall is a petulant child for the first few days. As I said though, the anger and vitriol that Marshall projects is a defense mechanism. Once Stone breaks down his walls and leaves him bare, it’s quite easy to rebuild. It was actually a joy watching Stone tame Marshall, and I was pleased that the Author didn’t write Marshall completely compliant, he still has a razor sharp edge about him. I think that is part of why these two fit so well. Stone wants a Sub that knows his place, but he wants a man that isn’t scared to speak up and stand up for himself. Marshall fits that personality perfectly, after a few spankings, of course.

I love that with each new book, Knight focus’ on a specific couple, but everyone else is still there in the background. The men of Kiss of Leather are very much a family. They provide and look out for each other, and though the big, brooding men are all Dom’s and expect nothing less than compliance, they are all very loving and caring and always have their Sub’s best interest at heart. So, while sometimes things are done in these stories that I can’t possibly understand, it’s so well written and conveyed that I remain completely engrossed in the story. There is some suspense and a little twist at the end of this book I wasn’t expecting and I quite liked that as well. Love it when an Author keeps me on my toes.

This is really a fantastic series, do read in order though, the stories pick up and continue where the previous book left off.

Review: This is the first book by this author that I have read and I have to say it was a blast. I wasn’t really sure at first if I was going to like it, but damn it sure does get better. It is told from Jamie’s perspective and that was the part that I was not sure about. I am not one to normally like those types of books, but this one was a hit for me.

Jaime is from a very wealthy family and loved by his father. When things go down in the family his father does everything to protect his son. Jaime had wanted to be a doctor and he was damn good at it. Then his father was accused of fraud and things go to pieces. His father is determined to clear his name and make a life for his son. Jaime had just not expected to be sent to another country altogether.

He takes one look at the residency doctor and is fascinated with him. It would seem that the attraction is returned. Miles wants Jaime just as much.

There is a lot of action in this story, with a bit of mystery and suspense. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and look forward to seeing what other stories this author has out there. I can’t wait to read the next story.

This was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it.

Review: Heath has just graduated Yale. His parents have his life planned. They want him to work for his father and get married and have children to carry on their name. They even have a sweet girl they like chosen for him. They are giving him a choice of his job, but he has to choose after the summer.

His friend Frankie takes him out to celebrate his birthday. He thinks he has found a place perfect for Heath. It is a speakeasy for like-minded men like Heath. Though Frankie brought him there to meet up with Heaths college crush Julian, Heath quickly fell for the owner. In a time of prohibition and when it’s dangerous for gay men can have this relationship last or will Heath chooses to follow his parent’s wishes.

Speakeasy a beautifully written story of the prohibition eras which is my favorite historical period. Suzy Ingold does an excellent job giving the book that nostalgic feel. Speakeasy is character driven as we follow Heath through his summer and his decisions. It’s very clean with no sex, but a beautiful, bittersweet romance with a satisfying ending.

If you like the 1920 prohibition era, coming of age, new adult, clean stories, I think you will like this one!

Blurb: What happens when a fairy loses his wings—and his memory?
Griff was born a Love fairy, but he never quite fit in. He didn’t want to be part of a harem. At least…he didn’t think he wanted that. What with his wings gone and his memory damaged, he can’t be certain of what he felt in the past. All he does know is, he wants his wings back. Without them, he’s grounded.

Blaze is a dragon shifter who tends to stick his foot in his mouth—and some other parts in other places—when he really shouldn’t. His brother is the king, and his sister-in-law Bonny is scary. Blaze’s last screw-up got him grounded, unable to shift into his dragon form. His punishment seems harsh to him, but there’s no escaping it.

Then the Love fairies come to the castle to work on forming an alliance. Blaze has about had it with guarding the horny beings, and he’s disappointed that they don’t stay small and cute. He almost commits a major faux-pas when he swats at something buzzing him, and it turns out to be a fairy on a dragonfly.

And from that snarky meeting, something wonderful, and dangerous, will come.

Review: This is the first book in the Fire and Flutter series.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a magical journey with beautiful scenery and deadly adversaries. Blaze is a dragon shifter who has had his ability to shift and breathe fire taken from him as punishment by the queen. He is tasked to take care of the fairies when they come to form an alliance. He meets Griff, a fairy who had his winged ripped from him in an awful way and was seriously injured. As a result he has memory problems.

I really felt for Griff. He seemed so lost and miserable at times yet fierce at others. Blaze seemed sarcastic and humorous and immediately fell for Griff and vice versa. These two go on an amazing journey in search of Griff’s wings. Along the way they meet Grlind, an Orc who was purged from his group and Jade, Storm King, whose kingdom is in the middle of a coup.

The whole story was wonderfully written and transports the reader into a fantasy world where all is not as it seems. There is laughter, suspense, mystery, deception and two individuals finding each other and themselves in the process. I truly was spellbound throughout and on the edge of my seat as the mystery surrounding Griff was unveiled.

I highly recommend this fantastic story. You won’t be disappointed. I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series.

Review: This is the third book in the Mating Season series.

Warrior dragons Deimos and Krakken have been searching for their third and all but given up never finding him. At the lottery this year something was different as the summer event began.

Cloud Martin entered the lottery and was chosen. He’s a nervous hopeful young man who doesn’t want to be passed around to any dragon. I was surprised that two dragons were able to manipulate and lie to a human to get them in bed with no repercussions. It seems deceitful and underhanded to me.

The people in charge of the tower should set up some rules for the dragons as they do for the humans as in my opinion it’s not fair that the dragons can do whatever they want but if the humans are scared and don’t want to go through with it they are literally branded and thrown in prison.

I really liked how Deimos and Krakken took the time to make sure Cloud was ready after what happened. I was disappointed in the book bringing up something that happened only to leave the question of who and why unanswered.

Aside from that it is a great read with hot sex.

Review: This is book twelve in the Rogue Wolfhounds series.

Joey is back with pack after being brainwashed and turned into a wolf. Joey struggles to come to terms with everything that happened as well as trying to control the compulsions brought on by the brainwashing.

Dean never gives up on Joey. He loves him yet feels guilty that he couldn’t protect his mate when he needed it the most. It was heartbreaking reading this book. I so wanted to hug them both and tell them with time and love that all would be alright.

I was horrified as at the end of the book it mentions that the people responsible for what happened to Joey will now be targeting humans. It seemed that one of the targets is Peter, Phoenix’ mate.

This was a great addition to the series. That is an emotional struggle for all in the pack as well as trying to figure out who all is involved for the happenings to Joey.

Highly recommended.

Review: Kate Lowell has a way with words and for me I am very grateful. This story was such a blast to read. It has a little bit of a serious tone but the rest of it will have you laughing your ass off. My attention was caught with the first line and kept all the way to the end. The characters are well written with a lot of depth to them and trust me these two will keep you on your toes.

Nathan has met Vince’s family but he was to chicken to introduce him to his. His family and the other weres were absolutely nuts. He thought he could take him camping and introduce him to some normal shifters, but a crazy friend told everyone. Crazy hummingbird hyped up on sugar. Vince was about to get an eye opener.

This story was such a blast to read and I can’t wait to read the next one. I hope it is when Vince gets to meet the other squirrels. I loved the little red panda’s and who knew a moose scream so loudly.

This was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend it.

Review: I have only read one book by this author and I have to say that Jo does know how to put a story together. However when I saw the title to this I thought the story would go in another direction.

That is until I saw the blurb and wasn’t really sure what to think. It is a very touching story and talks about friendship. However I am not really sure what to think other than that. I am never one for books with teenagers so I wished I had taken another look at it.

Jim had been dating two girls at one time and had been having sexual relations with them. Then they both turned on him and said that he had raped them. He spent time in a teen’s correctional center but he had always blamed himself. He had not been the great guy, but he never thought he would get time for rape.

So when he moved away he decided to stay away from everyone. However Manny refused to let him do that. He had one friend in town and maybe three others who trusted him. Then a girl in town decided to get him in trouble, and messages were showing up. He really needed someone to stand by him.

Manny was a great kid who didn’t let anyone talk shit about others. He had made the choice to be friends with Jim, even when Jim pushed him away. He knew Jim had not done anything towards the girls. And that they had  a witness to the fact that he had not. Also he knew Jim hadn’t posted those notes, seems whoever did had no clue you could find the truth. It seems Jim has found a true friend.

It was well written and fully developed, although when I started reading I realized that I had no clue what happened in the beginning so I was a bit lost. It was told with a serious tone and very little humor in it which was another part that didn’t work for me. I will admit that it is a great story but was not for me. I don’t much care for stories with teens so I don’t really have much to say on it.

However like I said it is a really good story with a great story line and plot. The author rocked it perfectly.

It is a very touching story and I would recommend it.

Review:  Wolf, Becoming is a wonderful novella by Rory Ni Coiliean. It is wonderful in the way that it is a dark and gritty view in the world of the paranormal. It is wonderful in the way that it looks at wolf shifters in a very unique and interesting way. It is wonderful in the way that it is purely about survival.

We first meet Volyk, a wolf shifter which are known as oboroten’. When tragedy strikes, a human killed his father, Volyk is left to protect his pregnant mother though he is still a child. That is when they meet a pack of real wolves. However, when it is revealed he is gay, Volyk is rejected by the pack and left to wonder as a lone wolf. I find it difficult to form an appropriate and brief explanation of oboroten’ vs real wolves – this isn’t quite the same as other shape shifter stories. Here, it is more like that the oboroten’ have a human skin beneath their wolf skin, rather than the other way around. The oboroten’ communicate telepathically, something they need to hide from normal wolves, which communicate via body language. This is definitely one of the main reasons that I find the story exciting to read.

Then there is Ilya. We meet him as a child and it is immediately obvious that he is more tender-hearted than his father and brothers. Then years later when it is discovered he is gay, his brothers plot to get rid of him. Ilya is a real sweetheart and the guys have real chemistry. This is where Ilya and Volyk’s worlds clash. Volyk goes to save Ilya and in the end the only way to do so is to turn him into a werewolf.

From there, it is about making sure Ilya can live as a werewolf. Then there is danger from the old pack who do not want Volyk anywhere near their territory. There are some surprises along the way, which in the end lifts some of the darkness from the book. This is, ultimately, a story of survival. Anyone who loves to read about shape shifters should enjoy this darker twist on the genre.

Review: I simply love returning to Pat Henshaw’s world of the Foothills Pride series, where a community in Sierra Foothills near San Francisco is the location for a small group of gay men to settle and call home.

This story we get to know more about Adam – he was once a famous TV chef with fancy San Francisco restaurants and cook books – he had also been a local boy and had moved back to Stone Acres when things turned to shit in San Francisco. Adam had been both lover and best friend to Jason when the two set out to make their fortunes in San Francisco. But San Francisco seemed to have swallowed Jason whole in a world of drugs and sex.

Adam has been in the series since the start in What’s In a Name? – a real funny and quirky book for those who have not read it yet. We pick up the story of Adam and Jason when a clean and sober Jason (now David, which is his middle name) goes to Adam’s restaurant to talk. The guys still great chemistry together despite the years, heartache and trauma that had initially led to them losing each other.

I love that David (Jason) is not bitter at Adam or has any abandonment issues. David has no illusions to what he was. It seems that abandonment was exactly what he needed to get clean.

This is a story about rediscovery and lost love. It is totally sweet. The only thing that I would have liked to have know more about was a bit more of an injection of emotion when it came to their shared past, I think that would have made their future all the more sweeter.

If you’ve been reading the Foothills Pride series this is another satisfying instalment. If you’ve not read the books, while this reads well as a standalone, I think it would be nice to go back and read the first three – if not for anything else you get to read about other charming characters such as Fredi, Max, Jimmy and Guy. Although Abe and Jeff from book 3 do not make an appearance there is a brief mention of them.

Review: This the third book in The Rift series.

This is an action packed book as we find the master hell-bent on world domination. Jason questions his growing feelings for both Blaine and Gabriel, which I thought the three were hot together.

I loved the different paranormals in this book as it added an extra surprise every now and then. The whole book was a great read that left me feeling like I had been on a journey of great importance with the main characters. It had action, mystery, suspense and some hot sex that added spice.

Loved it.

Review: This is the first book in Bonded by the Yume series.

After devastates earth humans try to survive the best they can. Miah has always had a goal in mind. He has no time for partying, relationships, or settling down. When his friend Keon mentions Natures Wrath, a dome where shifters can hunt humans, he is intrigued but doesn’t let it show. Later he finds an indent/ticket to the place and decides to go there.

I absolutely loved Moshe and Lisco, alien shifters. They were different from one another in their shifter forms, which I found refreshing as the things they shifted into are not normally written about it. But both were Yume. They are both attracted to Miah from the start and want to bond with him in their way but that goes horribly wrong. So they decide to get to know Miah in the human way.

I was fascinated by their history yet saddened by what happened to their race at the hands of another alien race. I was horrified that they were all but exterminated by these aliens all because they could change into any living thing.

It was a fascinating story with great details to add depth and understanding about the aliens. I did not want to give everything away so some things in the book are not mentioned in this review. I could not stop reading until the very last word and was held spellbound by descriptions of various events and technology used.

I am looking forward to seeing what else happens in this amazing series.

It was a great story that I highly recommend.
