All signs point to one of the many photographers who have been taking pictures of the moose. Then Landon discovers a small piece of gold in the creek and they believe they have a motive, but they’re still lacking solid suspects.

Review: Moose Fever is the third book in AJ Marcus’s Mountain Mysteries series. While the books probably work as a standalone, I love this series so much that I’m saying if you haven’t started from book 1 (Eagle’s Blood) go back now. If for nothing else than the pleasure of reading along as Brock and Landon begin their romantic relationship in a small Colorado town.

In this installment, Brock, a state wildlife officer, and Landon, who runs and works a wildlife rehabilitation centre, are preparing to get married. But of course, there is a lot going on than these guys and their seriously sweet and hot relationship. There is the appearance of Brock’s parents, who are quite wonderful, and want to make sure that everything is perfect for their son’s wedding day.

However, there is also the mystery and suspense side of things, which sees more than a few bullets fly, the body of an unknown person turn up that is only the start of the book’s body count.

For a wild life officer, Brock finds himself in some very dangerous and precarious situations, which don’t always involve wildlife of the four-legged kind. Regardless, it is an absolute pleasure reading along with the action as Brock works and Landon does his best to help his partner. I love these guys, I love their chemistry, I love their love –in fact, I love just about everything about their relationship. They are so strong and relatable as characters that it is pure joy to revisit Brock and Landon.

Once again, I can’t wait until book 4 comes out (got a tease at the end of Moose Fever). This is a wonderful series for just about any fan of action and suspense to get into.

Review: I have read a few books by this author and I have got to say that this one is way darker. The title was what caught my attention, but I really should have taken a second look at the blurb. This story was a bit hard to read for me. Not only hard but a bit complicated in some spots.

Humans, vampires, shifters and other beings used to live among each other at one time. This is actually a different type of earth, a different or alternate universe type of story. As with our world, wars start and they turn on each other. That doesn’t seem to change much. Now they hide from each other.

Sevon was orphaned when he was a small child. Dominic tortured Sevon and made him believe everything he said. Which for a small child would be easy to do. Even throughout this Sevon still wants to help those around him. However it would seem Dominic has more control then we think. For when he sees his best friend, he doesn’t recognize Jack at all.

Jack is a shifter and he plans on saving his friend. The abuse is both destructive and very powerful on a child but as an adult he is almost paralyzed by it. He is a sexy little king who needs help.

I am afraid that most of this is from what I caught and felt then what was probably written. The story was so deep and very complex, which it was hard for me to get into. I am afraid that I had trouble concentrating from the start. I am not one for abuse of any kind, so that made it even worse for me.

While the story itself is very well written and is compelling to some, just wasn’t for me at all.

Review: This is book one in the Immemorial Year series.

This is not a romance book. Though it does have several kissing scenes and a couple of mentions of sex, but that’s it. This is a post apocalypse story set years after bombs are dropped destroying everything. The survivors are doing what they can to live in the changed world. But not all is as it seems and changes are coming.

Cavalo, the MC, keeps to himself for the most part. He is haunted by things from the past that he has seen and had to do. His only companion is a dog named Bad Dog and a robot named SIRS. Throughout this story it seems he has lost his mind with the way his companions talk to him. But I think it’s a way for him to have interactions with someone.

I imagine anyone having to go through, do the things Cavalo has had to do and seen that anyone would not be completely sane. With this being said he runs into a group called Dead Rabbits. They are vicious and don’t hesitate to kill in the most horrific ways. They are also cannibals according to the story.

Lucas is a Dead Rabbit who Cavalo captures and takes home with him. Lucas is unable to speak due to his throat being cut at some point. He is a very mysterious individual that I found fascinating. This story will blow your mind. You have people fighting for survival while others just take and take without regard.

Then you have two groups who will do anything to get Lucas. Why? I do not know exactly. I’m hoping the answers to several questions will come soon though as the first book ends with no answers.

Dark, twisted in ways and mysterious this book will have you on the edge of your seat as each chapter unfolds and more information is divulged in an awesome story of survival and secrets.

Cannot wait to read book two.

Highly recommended.

Jeremy Spencer never imagined the occult order he and his boyfriend, Bowyn, started as a joke in college would become an international organization with hundreds of followers. Now a professor with expertise in Renaissance music, Jeremy finds himself drawn back into the world of free love and ceremonial magick he’d left behind, and the old jealousies and hurt that separated him from Bowyn eight years ago seem almost insignificant.

Then Jeremy begins to wonder if the centuries-old score he’s been asked to transcribe hides something sinister. With each stanza, local birds flock to the old mansion, a mysterious fog descends upon the grounds, and bats swarm the temple dome. During a séance, the group receives a cryptic warning from the spirit realm. And as the music’s performance draws nearer, Jeremy realizes it may hold the key to incredible power—power somebody is willing to kill for.

Blurb: The world is gone. All that’s left are the monsters.
The creatures attacked Haven VII with no warning. An AI named Kyrios, a nearly omnipotent being, should have protected the city during the Night of the Swarm.
Except it didn’t.

No one knows why it failed, or why it saved eight specific people: the Captain, the Seer, the Sentry, the Messenger, the Engineer, the Alchemist, the Medic, and the Stewardess. They have no idea of the meaning behind the titles they’ve been given, why they were selected and brought together, or what Kyrios expects from them.

When they awake from stasis, they find their city in ruins and everyone long dead. They’re alone—or so they think. But then the creatures start pouring out from underground, looking for them. They don’t stand a chance in a fight, and with limited supplies, they can’t run forever. All they know is that the creatures aren’t their only enemies, and there’s only one place they can turn. Kyrios beckons them toward Its Portal, but can it be trusted?

In Its isolated shrine in the desert, they might find the answers they need—if they can survive long enough to reach it.

Review: I loved this book. It’s about eight individuals chosen to survive a horrible catastrophe that happens. What was surprising was the amount of time that went by after they were awoken from their deep sleep. The world they wake up in is bleak and fraught with danger.

Each character was chosen for a specific reason. They each brought a certain skill that was needed as the story progressed. Joachim, the alchemist, Marie, the stewardess, Dex, the seer, Alain, the captain, Rain, the medic, Kenichi, the messenger, Omar, the engineer and Nikos, the sentry were all unique individuals that brought a lot of different aspects to the story as they strived to survive and make sense of the changes around them.

I loved all the characters but one. I hated Marie. She acted like everyone was supposed to do exactly what she said even though some of the things she said were wrong. She seriously got on my nerves early in the story. It really broke my heart at the loss they all suffered through. Dex was complete a mystery to me. I am intrigued by the fact it said he was from an ancient race of guardians. Kyrios confused me as I knew he held great power and was fascinated by how complex he was.

The so-called monsters were creepy and disgusting centipedes that were mutated. The size of a cat or larger these things were deadly and functioned under a hive mentality destroying everything in their path. What surprised the most was where they came from.
So much happens in this amazing riveting, spellbinding story that it is impossible to go over it all.

Needless to say it was wonderfully written with harrowing details on the group’s survival step by step. I especially liked the POVs of each character as the story progressed as it gave a better understanding of each individual.

The battle scenes were deadly and gruesome at times. There is no sex in this book, so if you’re looking for hot and steamy between the sheets this book is not for you. But if you’re looking for a wonderful story to immerse yourself in that leaves you on the edge of your seat gasping for breath at times then this is for you.

I seriously can’t wait to read the next installation.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all.

Blurb: War came to the Dreamlands when Kyushu was invaded by the Egyptians and Inuzaka Keno’s old nemesis, the Trust. As the lords of Nippon maneuver on and off the field to recover their lands, the peaceful life Keno enjoyed with his lover, Samojirou Aboshi, comes to a violent end. Loyalty to their rulers and the need to drive the enemies from Kyushu tears them apart and forces them to question everything they thought they believed.

Trust refugee Mason Kairns, an ally of Keno and Aboshi’s liege lord, struggles to carve a place in a society as hostile as the Northlands he fled. Amidst the chaos and political scheming, the protection of the Hakkenshi may be all that stands between them and disaster.
With the fight for Kyushu intensifying, Keno reminds Aboshi more and more of his ancestor: a cursed warrior who spent his life covered in blood.

Review: This is the third book in the Dreamlands series.

This book is fraught with war, mistrust and two people who are torn apart as they struggle for the balance that is lost when invading forces threaten to destroy their world. It broke my heart that Kenyo and Aboshi went through what they did as I so enjoyed them as a couple in the other books.

There are many characters that reappear in this story from the other books as well as new ones. I haven’t read many stories where there is a wide range of characters that interact throughout a book. But it definitely works in this series.

I loved all the interactions, details and descriptions throughout. I felt sorry for those caught in the crosshairs and was hoping no one was seriously injured the further I read. I was rooting for Kenyo and Aboshi to find their way to each other again as the story unfolded.

An epic fantasy that draws you in and keeps you reading until the very end. I would recommend reading the first book and continuing from their as each book continues where the last left off in a way.

Great read.

Review: I didn’t mind reading Mute Witness by Rick R Reed. I know it isn’t a ringing endorsement, but this being the second book I’ve read by Reed, I believe I have now come to the conclusion that I really am just not a particular fan of the author’s writing style.

I can enjoy a good plot, appreciate the emotion, when I read a story, but as I felt with this book, the writing style doesn’t reach out and grab me.

This book is about Sean and Austin. They have been together for a while and they are insanely happy. They have a pretty place together near the water in a small town and to make the family complete Sean’s son, Jason, visits them on weekends. But Jason goes and the small town predictably turns on the gay couple and the rest of the story becomes a bit of a mind-fuck.

There is drama within the couple’s relationship as well as the horror of the missing child and all of the things that emerge in the aftermath to shock the community. Most of the reactions to horror that has happened to Jason are very predictable, but I am unsure as to whether that is a good thing or a bad thing, but it is quickly evident that the homophobia runs deep.

As I said, I never really felt emotionally attached to any of the characters. The book is written from numerous POVs. A bit of a bug bear of mine is when minor characters become the narrators, or more accurately characters which are not the titular couple, because this is where I feel all the emotion is lost. Another issue I had was it was sometimes too wordy, to borrow a phrase, five words are used where one would suffice. There were so many times I wanted to skip ahead and find out what was going to happen.

So, yes, I liked Mute Witness it was an interesting and engaging plot. It was also intense, I don’t recommend binge reading as I had been tempted to do but in the end just couldn’t. I didn’t mind the danger, the horror and the graphically real feel to when it comes to the abuse aspects within the plot.

However, the choppy feel of the book, though, means that I just couldn’t get completely and emotionally involved in the action and the danger. I certainly never got attached to any of the characters. There is some dream sequences throughout which I felt sometimes took away from the overall story.

So, the tricky part is the recommendation. This book isn’t strictly a romance. That is all incidental even though Austin and Sean are already an established couple. This is more about the thrill and suspense with some graphic depictions of sexual and physical abuse, which I am sure, is not for everyone.

If you’re the type that like watching a good old mystery on TV (British mysteries keeps coming to mind) and it sounds good to you, this is the book for you.

(Haven Prime 01)

The world is gone.

The Philippines, 1946

After being discharged from the Marines, John Buchanan is offered a position as overseer for plantation owner Ignacio Saenz. The offer is unexpected, considering he knows nothing about coconut farming, but the presence of Mount Mayon, an active volcano within sight of the property, tips the scales in Ignacio’s favor. Finally John has a chance to put his lifelong passion for vulcanology into practice.

Gregorio Delgado, the current overseer, takes exception to this turn of events. He views John as an interloper and Ignacio’s offer as a thinly disguised excuse to marry off one of his six daughters. What neither of them expects is the powerful physical attraction that simmers between them. Could John be a kindred spirit, or is he just using Gregorio for his knowledge of farming to ingratiate himself with his potential father-in-law?

As John and Gregorio begin a tour of the haciendas, John discovers he has far more in common with his new acquaintance than he thought possible. Torn between honor and desire, John struggles to define who he is and what Gregorio could mean to him. Like the unpredictable volcano, equal parts beauty and danger, Gregorio becomes an obsession that could erupt at any minute and destroy them both.

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: I have to say the book What the Water Gave Me seemed more like someone thinking aloud as to what they knew about the events and what they could have done different but extremely short. It seemed like there should have been more to the story.

Well written and emotional.
