Review: D.J. Brumb is a new author for me and the title was what caught my attention. I then read the blurb and was intrigue enough to read it. Although, I am not really much for historical romance stories. They come off a bit strange to me. The problem with this story for me was pretty much the same. It has great potential but was missing certain aspects for me to make it a great story. It starts off in the present day but then goes back to when the guys meet. For me that was just off. Although I do love to find out how a couple meets the author made this just a bit hard to get into.

When Mike and Paul meet it doesn’t really get into certain details that would make it jump out at you. It was in fact a bit stiff and boring. I mean people do meet when they jog, but to drop from the meeting to falling in love should have a bit more steps to it. Then there is the fact that Mike gets lost in Australia but he comes off like he has never seen different races. It does not sound right to me, even in the fifties one has been around many different races. The description was pretty good though.

I do not like a book that has cheating in it, and here Paul was having sex with different people was not a hit for me. Then there is the fact that there is no mention of lube, which just sounds painful. Overall this book comes off as the author is new to not only writing but sex between men. Also the fact that Mike is lacking certain knowledge is a bit frustrating. I mean he sounds like a stupid hick when in fact he is not.

The whole story bothered me more than I can even mention. It had great potential but the author just missed way too many fine points to even enjoy it to a certain degree. I just couldn’t get into the whole entire story in one sitting. It didn’t keep my attention like a story should and that was a disappointment to me. I am sorry to say that this book was not for me, although some might like it.

Blurb: Caleb Hudson and Hal Zimmer became best friends the day they stood up against the schoolyard bully together. Life’s complicated enough with their friendship crossing racial lines in 1960s Charleston, South Carolina, but as time passes, they realize it’s more than their friendship that sets them apart from other kids. At first, Caleb denies his feelings for Hal could be more than companionship. He supports his friend when Hal admits he’s gay, but Caleb isn’t ready to face his own truth.

Hal becomes a staunch antiwar protester, and the divide between them widens after Caleb is drafted. But when Caleb returns from Vietnam, the time for denial is over. His homecoming sets off a series of events that force Caleb and Hal to confront their desires and what lines they’re willing to cross to get what they truly want out of life.

Review: Marguerite is a new author for me and normally I am a little apprehensive when starting books by new authors. However this was an enjoyable story that captivates you from the moment you start reading and keeps your attention all the way to the end. I could not put this book down and wanted it to continue. The story was captivating, the characters were enticing and the world was riveting. I was quite surprised by this story.

I was also surprised to find out that it stated in the future and talks about their past. It talks about how they met and fell in love, how they loved each other desperately and leaves you wanting more. You get to see their children and grandchildren, how they are celebrating their long life together.

They met when Caleb was in grade school and was so different then many of the other children. He was the only black kid in class and goes through the trouble that many blacks went through back in the past. Where as Hal’s problem was his accent, but their differences is what pulls them together. In that time and place, their friendship was not welcomed by many others. However these two have the strength and heart to keep going when many would stop.

It is a sweet story showing their strength and love. It shows what happens when they get older, how after Caleb is sent to the war in Vietnam and came back. It shows so many aspects of their lives that you can’t help but wonder what it would be like to go through life with them. Like many couples they get together only to be pulled apart, but then get back together later on. I was so very glad that nothing happened to them like many other authors has happening.

Usually when there are time differences in a story, it pulls me in the other direction. It causes me to loose interest however this story did not do that. I had so much fun reading about Caleb and Hal that I can see myself reading this more than once.

I would definitely recommend it and can’t wait to see what other books this amazing author has out.

Review: This continues from book one. Kristopher and Michel are on the run yet again. When they stop to help civilian after a bombing they are separated. From here there are two separate journeys so to speak.

We see how Michel is with the resistance and helping them with a fellow member before it’s too late. While at the same time Kristopher is trying to survive his own dilemma. There were many variables and characters interacting throughout this intense story.

I really felt for Kristopher and Michel as neither knew if the other was even still alive. Still they journeyed hoping against hope to one day be reunited. The Gestapo did not let up in their pursuits for a second. it lead to some raising moments throughout.

Well written and tense at times, this story grabs hold and does not let go until the last word.

Great read.

Blurb: Former gladiator Saevius is certain Fortune’s smiling on him when a Pompeiian politician buys him to be his bodyguard. That is until his new master, Laurea Calvus, orders Saevius to discover the gladiator with whom his wife is having a sordid affair. In order to do that, Saevius must return to the arena, training alongside the very men on whom he’s spying. Worse, he’s now under the command of Drusus, a notoriously cruel—and yet strangely intriguing—lanista.

But Saevius’s ruse is the least of his worries. There’s more to the affair than a wife humiliating her prominent husband, and now Saevius is part of a dangerous game between dangerous men. He isn’t the only gladiator out to expose the Lady Verina’s transgressions, and her husband wants more than just the guilty man’s name.

When Saevius learns the truth about the affair, he’s left with no choice but to betray a master: one he’s come to fear, one he’s come to respect, and either of whom could have him killed without repercussion.

For the first time in his life, the most dangerous place for this gladiator isn’t the arena.

This 52,500 word novel was previously published under the pseudonym L.A. Witt, and has been lightly revised.

Purchase Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: Just three fights short of his freedom Saevius is bought by a Pompeiian politician, although his chance of freedom is gone Saevius is just glad that the life as a gladiator is behind him, that is until his new master orders him back to the arena to search out the man his wife is having an affair with. Discovering that man’s name is hard which is made even harder but the eagle eyes of his new Ianista Drusus, a man whose name is well known by gladiators around the country, a man who is spoken about with fear and hate.

This is a very well-crafted story; it pulls you in quickly as we see everything through Saevius’ eyes. Saevius has lived his life as a gladiator and is looking forward to never fighting again when he is sold to Laurea Calvus and thrown right back into the life he hoped he’d never see again. He finds himself in a situation he never thought he could possibly be in, torn between his master Calvus, his new Ianista and his fellow gladiators.

I liked this story a lot, especially about the everyday life of the gladiators, seeing through a gladiator’s eyes and having his thoughts and feelings about everything was fascinating and really does pull you in. I wasn’t sure about this story when I first picked it up, I’m not into first person narrative but this really was an interesting read. I will admit that at times I did wish we could see things from Drusus’ perspective especially after we discover the truth because that would be just awesome, the story from Drusus’s view would be a must read.

We get pulled into a world filled with intrigue, danger and just a dash of mystery, Saevius really does find himself with an impossible task, spy for his master, spy for his Ianista, keeping his fellow gladiators off his back, lying to his master, his Ianista and fellow gladiators, facing punishment from all three… damn Saevius just can’t do anything right with being hemmed in on three sides and with his back to a wall full of spikes!

Now I do view this as a romance, it is slight but it is there but I also view this as a mystery because finding out who Calvus’ wife’s lover is was the main storyline.

I do feel that the story did gloss over Saevius feelings, because I’ll tell you if I had a glimpse of freedom and it was snatched away at the last moment I’d be storming mad and spitting feathers while railing at the Gods sick twisted humor. I also think the author took a couple of liberties with the way that women and gladiators interacted, because while it may have happened it happened in secret where no one could see and many mouths were firmly shut on pain of death.

I recommend this to those who love ancient Rome, Gladiators, intrigue, danger, a hint of romance and an ending that is definitely happy for our earnest while gladiator.

Harriet realizes she’s also different when she starts to swoon over Rosemary Clooney instead of Rock Hudson—and finds Sputnik and sci-fi more fascinating than sock hops.

Review: Carlos is a hard worker and takes his job at the ranch seriously. When an old flame shows up Carlos takes it upon himself to show the man he is not the way the man remembers.

Jules and his stepson Albert move to Mercy under stressful circumstances. Upon learning that the ranch has horses Al is ecstatic and quickly becomes a part of the everyday hustle and bustle of it. Jules on the other hand is wary due to Carlos being his ex lover and the man who broke his heart.

A truly wonderful and sweet story about forgiveness, love and second chances. I loved that Jules did not give in right away and made Carlos prove he was a changed man.

Great read.

Blurb: Boston in 1888 is quite urbane, but unfortunately for Gil Porter, that isn’t the same thing as being understanding. When his sexuality is exposed by the scandalous suicide of his lover, Gil is exiled to the small town of Mercy, Texas, by his domineering father, George, who believes life on Vernon Porter’s ranch will cure Gil of his “unnatural” desires. Grieving and ashamed, Gil is determined to keep his distance from everyone until he can return home. To his surprise, he finds acceptance at Bent Oak Ranch, especially from Matt Grayson, the handsome son of the ranch foreman. Knowing he must fight his attraction to Matt, Gil courts a local girl, but an unexpected encounter with Matt leads to his discovery of Matt’s feelings for him. Torn between Matt and his desire to be “normal,” between returning to his old life and building a new one in Texas, Gil is faced with a choice—appeasing his father or becoming the man Matt knows he can be.

Review: Gil is shipped to Mercy, Texas to toughen up and become a man according to his father who found out he likes other men. Gil is unhappy and miserable and it shows. When he arrives at the ranch he meets Matt.

This is a back and forth story with Gil questioning himself and trying to come to terms with himself. While I understood it also got tiresome eventually. Matt was not about to be put off and does not let Gil’s attitude change his feelings for the man.

The details of the story were so good it almost felt like I was back in that time era. I was happy that the ranch offered a safe haven for gay men in a time whee is was not safe being found out. Enjoyable and entertaining.

Great read.

Blurb: Lew’s life is pleasantly boring until his friend Mira messes with magic she doesn’t understand. While searching for her, he is pulled back in time to 1919 by a catastrophic magical accident. As he tries to navigate a strange time and find his friend in the smoky music clubs of Soho, the last thing he needs is Detective Alec Carter suspecting him of murder.

London in 1919 is cold, wet, and tired from four years of war. Alec is back in the Metropolitan Police after slogging out his army service on the Western Front. Falling for a suspect in a gruesome murder case is not on his agenda, however attractive he finds the other man.

They are both floundering and out of their depth, struggling to come to terms with feelings they didn’t ask for and didn’t expect. Both have secrets that could get them arrested or killed. In the middle of a murder investigation that involves wild magic, mysterious creatures, and illegal sexual desire, who is safe to trust?

Review: Lew searches desperately for his foster sister Mira when she messes with The Border, something she doesn’t understand; now Lew is stuck in 1919 trying to find his feet and his missing sister… but something is lurking in the shadows, something that followed them from the Outlands.

Alec Carter has settled back into life as a police Inspector at the station he served at before the war, when he’s called into investigate mysterious deaths at a hospital. Stumped, it isn’t till a brutal murder that he gets any leads and his suspicion rises about the photographer who has secrets.

This is a great story that plunges you into the life of London in the 1920’s, it adds a twist of paranormal and a dose of forbidden longing.

The story is mainly from Lew’s perspective with Alec’s perspective thrown in at times; there isn’t a real romance just a promise of something lingering throughout the story. The story is mainly focused on finding Lew’s sister and then finding the creature that is hunting in London, we discover slowly over time the role of the Workers and The Border and what they think the creatures are.

I really liked this story and enjoyed following Lew along as he gets settled in a new time and finds his feet. Alec looks to be an interesting man and I can’t wait to see how their relationship progresses in future books.

The storyline is good and flows quite well once you understand the concept of The Border and how both Mira and Lew found themselves in the 1918 & 1919. We discover that Mira and Lew have more allies than they thought and that there just might be lives for the both of them in the time they discover themselves in.

I recommend this if you love time-travel, historical’s, mysterious creatures from another place, and the beginning of something forbidden between two men.

Jules Wingate hopes to start over in Mercy as the schoolmaster after a scandal sent him and his son fleeing their former home. But he discovers he’s left one bad situation for another when he encounters his former student and lover, Carlos. No matter how Jules tries to resist, he yearns for the passionate connection they once shared… before Carlos broke his heart.

Carlos knows his foolish, immature actions hurt Jules, but he desperately wants a second chance and to show Jules he’s changed. But trust so badly broken is hard to repair. While he works to earn Jules’s forgiveness, someone else at the ranch has his sights set on Carlos—and he doesn’t care how many lives he has to ruin to make Carlos his and his alone.
