Review:  I have read two complete series by this author and have loved each one of them, so it wasn’t a far stretch that this would be any different.  It is not part of a series but a standalone story.  At first it is a bit misleading; what with finding out some of the information half way though the story so I was a bit miffed with that.  However the mystery soon moves into something a bit darker then I normally read.

At first I must admit that I was thinking paranormal type story, but it definitely was not.  Which was a plus for me.  Although I do love paranormals, mermaids were never one of my favorites.  They always gave me the creeps.

So what you get here is a complete mystery with a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing.  I felt bad for the young man in the end, but damn it was good.  It is not as action packed as I had expected though.  I was also not really into the supporting characters as I should have been I suppose.  The girl comes off as a waste but she soon picks up in the story.  And here I thought Ricky really went there for the job, the blurb definitely doesn’t let you know.  I felt a bit let down on that part and the fact that you don’t find it out till the book is halfway done.

Ricky was trying his hardest to save money to go to college.  He had decided to go away from home to do so, but there is a hidden reason behind it all.  Zack had gone there during the summer to work and within a short time there ended up in a world that was dark and nasty.  He turned up missing and Ricky wanted to find out why and how.  That is if it doesn’t get him killed as well.

Now I am not a fan of having the readers think this is a romance, because it is not.  It is just a dark mystery surrounding another, who just happens to be the main guy’s boyfriend.  It starts off with a description of the place and let’s just say that I would never visit there, not even if someone paid me to do so.  It is a very fascinating story that will have you on the edge of your seat throughout it all.

Now the story is very good and the writing was perfect, however it was just a bit too dark for my taste.  I figure it is definitely not a story to read before going to bed, that is if you dream of what you read.

I am afraid that even though I connected with the story and Ricky, the story was just not for me.  However I can’t wait to read more by this author.

L.A. Witt

The virgin isn’t the only one with something to lose…

Self-described manwhore Kieran Frost is loving the single life. Two years after moving to Seattle, he still has his friends with benefits, Rhett and Ethan, plus a never-ending supply of gorgeous, available men wandering through the bar where he works. A relationship? Spare him the drama and heartbreak. He’s got no complaints about his unattached lifestyle.

When Rhett’s daughter introduces him to newly-out-of-the-closet Alex Corbin, Kieran’s interest perks up. After all, the quiet ones are always the freaks in bed. But Alex isn’t just shy and reserved. He’s a virgin in every sense of the word, having never even kissed anyone else.

Kieran is no one’s teacher, and his first instinct is to run like hell in the other direction. But his conscience won’t let him throw the naïve kid to the wolves for someone else to take advantage of. The plan is to introduce Alex to his own sexuality, pull him out of his shell, then go their separate ways.

It’s the perfect, foolproof plan…assuming no one falls in love.

Review: This is a fantastic collection of Michael Murphy’s novels. For someone like me who has not read anything by Michael Murphy before, this is the perfect intro for any author. Each story is jam-packed with emotion and is quite simply a roller coaster which cannot be missed. One thing that I loved about all the jobs is not only the wonderful story lines but also the complex characters which are so widely varied from each other. I will briefly go over the 4 novels featured in the bundle:

Little Squirrels can Climb Trees (♥♥♥♥ 4 hearts)

This story is about the budding romance between Kyle and Joseph, told from Joseph’s POV. These guys could not be any different from each other, although this is rather stereotypical in the fact that this is a “wealthy city guy meets poor country guy moved to the big city” story. Kyle is the Little Squirrel in the story because this is very much his story despite the fact that Joseph tells it.

For me the highlights of the story are: this is something of a journey of self discovery for both characters, Joseph learns that there is more to the world and Kyle is on a journey of self discovery after being brought up in a small town by Christian fundamentalists. I also enjoyed the fact that Murphy did not make the Christian aspect of the story into a melodramatic farce, it flowed well and was completely relatable. Another point that I found relatable was the bumpy start that Joseph and Kyle had. Honestly, I was a bit unsure about Joseph at first because he came off as a bit spoiled.

When Dachshunds Ruled the Serengeti (♥♥♥♥ 3.5 hearts)

This is about Jose and Phillip who meet each other in college and become a totally sweet couple that you can’t help but to love. This is a very interesting story because like the previous story, these guys are polar opposites. There are a lot of highs and, equally, a lot of lows, experienced here and I think that’s what makes this raw emotionally but fully relatable.

Jose is first born child with eight younger siblings and strict Mexican parents. His family are poor; they are struggling migrant workers that want the best education for their children (something I can relate to). Philip on the other hand is the only son of rich parents, you get the impression he was born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth and it is something that becomes evident later on in the book.

I felt that first half of the book, where the guys meet and come together, is much stronger than the second half. However, regardless, I still enjoyed the story as a whole. Although I think Phillip acted totally within the bounds of his character, I found his reactions to the drama surround Jose and Jose’s family very frustrating. And despite the fact that the ending was somewhat satisfying, I found it came a tad too quick.

It Should Have been You (♥♥♥♥♥ 5 hearts)

OMG, this was just wow … It Should Have Been You completely blew me away with how fantastic it was as well as making me cry throughout.

I think what makes it hit home more so is that Michael Murphy based this off of a real story. He briefly explains in his author’s note that this was given a bit of a happy ending. The ending reveals hope for our MCs – hope that there are people to support them and hope that they will have a better life, although not specifically about romance it is an important because it is about survival.

The story is centred on Patrick, who has been kicked out of home and onto the streets and is forced to do things out of character just to survive. Then there are the people around him, specifically there is Juan, who is his romantic interest. However, we also meet Patrick’s father, who really does development along the way, as well as Father Tom. I absolutely adore Father Tom; to me he was like the voice of reason. I found he was also a good balance to Patrick’s mother’s extremist Christian views.

Swan Song for the Ugly Duckling (♥♥♥♥3.5 hearts)

This is another example of Michael Murphy’s use of characters who are polar opposites. Josh is something of the quintessential jock, while Aaron is the son and heir of an Amish preacher who maybe seems to border on crazy, though I am not entirely sure as I don’t know enough about the Amish community. In saying that though, I am totally a sucker for any book that features an Amish character who is at war within himself and finds his HEA with a Prince Charming by the end. I swear, that it not a spoiler, more than anything it brings to mind Andrew Grey’s Farm series. Yet in saying that, Swan Song for the Ugly Duckling is just so completely different.

Here we are in the world of young adults and college life. Aaron is allowed into the outside world because his father believes as a future leader of the congregation that Aaron needs to know what is happening outside of the community. However, the outside world means a world of pain from bullying for Aaron, mix in the fact that he also finds himself attracted to other boys. Then steps in Josh, he relentlessly apologises to Aaron but then becomes something of a saviour to Aaron. Hence the title, Josh helps Aaron shift from Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan.

This is essentially a young adult book which just happens to use an Amish main character. The first half of the book is excellent. The only reason why I’ve rated this 3.5 hearts is because I felt that the second half lost some of the spark from the first half and the ending (which was satisfying) seemed rather rushed in the last 3-4 chapters.

Review: Marguerite is a new author for me and normally I am a little apprehensive when starting books by new authors. However this was an enjoyable story that captivates you from the moment you start reading and keeps your attention all the way to the end. I could not put this book down and wanted it to continue. The story was captivating, the characters were enticing and the world was riveting. I was quite surprised by this story.

I was also surprised to find out that it stated in the future and talks about their past. It talks about how they met and fell in love, how they loved each other desperately and leaves you wanting more. You get to see their children and grandchildren, how they are celebrating their long life together.

They met when Caleb was in grade school and was so different then many of the other children. He was the only black kid in class and goes through the trouble that many blacks went through back in the past. Where as Hal’s problem was his accent, but their differences is what pulls them together. In that time and place, their friendship was not welcomed by many others. However these two have the strength and heart to keep going when many would stop.

It is a sweet story showing their strength and love. It shows what happens when they get older, how after Caleb is sent to the war in Vietnam and came back. It shows so many aspects of their lives that you can’t help but wonder what it would be like to go through life with them. Like many couples they get together only to be pulled apart, but then get back together later on. I was so very glad that nothing happened to them like many other authors has happening.

Usually when there are time differences in a story, it pulls me in the other direction. It causes me to loose interest however this story did not do that. I had so much fun reading about Caleb and Hal that I can see myself reading this more than once.

I would definitely recommend it and can’t wait to see what other books this amazing author has out.

Ahndrai believes that every creature is as cruel and unforgiving as Eita. Then Nakiirn, a dragon prince, rescues Ahndrai. Review: Ahndrai wishes he had never met sadistic vampire Eita. The vampire broke into his home and basically took over his life. Using him in any means he sees fit.

I hated Eita with a passion. I wanted to kill him myself for the despicable things he did and allowed others to do to Ahndrai. It was no wonder why he was so terrified when Nakiirn, a dragon prince, takes him from the vampire. He assumed all paranormals were sadistic after what he suffered.

But Nakiirn is patient and loving with Ahndrai. Explaining things as best as he can while at the same time trying to protect Ahnadrai from Eita evil clutches. This book was well written and takes the reader down the dark side of paranormals while at the same time showing that just like with humans there are both good and evil in the paranormal world as well.

I loved how the story had both aspects of good and evil and were detailed enough that the reader understood what was going on without having to go into horrible details about the rape, as it was mentioned a few times but that was it, beatings and the manner in which the vampire killed Ahndrai over and over only to bring him back to life.

Great, intense, powerful yet sweet. Loved it.

Review: Each book in the Marshals collection features our very sexy US Marshals. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. In my opinion I would actually start with the A Matter of Times series because that is where you will get to meet our sexy men’s boss.

Miro and Ian have been work partners for over three years, but time has changed quite a lot. Now they are partners in life as is with work and things really are not changing in my mind. They are both stubborn, feisty and down right crazy. As with many starting a relationship, things are up and dwon till you get it right, or close to it as you can get. When one of Miro’s most dangerous arrest escapes from prison, Miro knows the man is going to come after him.

Ian is a very touch special forces member as well as a marshal, but it is Miro’s touch that he needs to keep him grounded. So when Miro goes missing, you can guess what is happening to Ian. These two are only starting out and you can feel the heat from them both. However Miro wants to get married but Ian is still not in that mindset. He just doesn’t understand why Miro wants it so bad, that is until he almost looses the man.

Now as much as I love this book, I don’t really care for all of the extra stuff added in and smaller plot lines that you can see coming out. To me when you add in a lot of extra dialog, descriptions or just fluff it takes away from the story just a bit. I get tired of reading it and skim over all that extra nonsense. It doesn’t mean that I don’t love the story quite a bit, but I get bored with all of it. To me it just feels like the author is adding stuff to make her word count. Now other than that, this story is very fast pace and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I can’t wait to see what the next book has going on. This is one book I would definitely recommend.

Review: Sasha has Bliase get in contact with Harry, a reclusive creature highly intelligent, to get a leg up on the war. What he discovers upon meeting the man is an intriguing and highly attractive being. The two hit it off and create astounding chemistry together.

I have to say all in all I was disappointed with this series. If you’re looking for hot sex and romance this is the series for you. If you’re looking for a combo of romance, suspense and action this series was lacking in the action and suspense. There was a serious lack of details in each book. It seemed as though those were glanced over in favor of the physical and romance aspects of the book.

O.k. read for me.

Blurb: Captured and accused of piracy, privateer Blaise Risner, captain of the Golden Stallion, finds himself in a clinch – literally – with Confederation Admiral Peter Keller, who promises to see justice done by way of hard labor. But when the chemistry between them rivals the heat of the twin Talixin suns, the dominant admiral decides he wants to handle the rehabilitation of the provocative pirate himself. After their first close encounter, Blaise figures that serving Keller in such a personal capacity won’t be such a terrible sentence.

Keller dispenses his own forms of painful justice and sensual discipline, which usually involve a not-so-resistant Blaise on his knees bound and determined to give as good as he gets. The privateer can’t deny that suffering the handsome admiral’s punishments makes him burn like the fires of the Horsehead Nebula. Serving in the roles of prisoner and captor defines their ‘relationship’, but no power can stop a shooting star … the star of startling passion that flares every time they touch.

Just when Blaise thinks he can navigate the treacherous asteroid field of emotion to find common ground with Keller, an interstellar war tears them apart. Through it all, Blaise’s desire for his captor stands as tall and strong as the monoliths of Maraven, and he’ll go to the very edge of the galaxy and back if that’s what it takes to crack the ice around the admiral’s heart.

Review: Peter uses his position to use Blaise as he see’s fit which did not sit well with me. Blaise is accused of piracy. Seeing no way out of it he makes a deal with Peter to serve out punishment as he see’s fit.

Peter seemed a bit too aggressive to me. I did not really care for his attitude toward Blaise then all of a sudden he changes his tune.

This story fell flat for me. I wanted to like it but could not due to Peter as I did not care for him as a character at all.

Juo is a healer and takes Ryan in when he comes along with the sick. The two grow closer together but Ryan comes down with the plague.

While I liked the overall story I was honestly expecting more explanations about the disease and where it comes from plus the actual treatment of the crew but the story focused on Juo and Ryan. It felt more like a regular contemporary story to me.

It was an o.k. read.

Review: Rowe is still grieving for his wife when his old army buddy Noah shows up after leaving the military. The one time these men were together comes roaring back as long lost feelings are slowly rekindled. However, I have to say that even though I understood Rowe’s grief and reluctance with Noah it pissed off with the hot and cold game he played with him after each time they are together.

I did not figure Rowe to be someone to play with someones emotions after everything he had been through but that’s what it felt like he did until he got his head out of his ass. The threat to Rowe and the crew seemed never ending. Danger, action, suspense and some hot scenes are all throughout.

I was glad Rowe finally came to his senses considering how long Noah has had feelings for him. Even though I was mad at Rowe a good majority of the book I am happy with the end result.

The mystery part was outstanding in it’s explanations, planning out and execution. Fantastic read.

It’s easy for them to believe the worst and mistrust him before they’ve even spoken to him, but Calder is out to prove that he’s more than his Dockalfar blood, especially to a certain Rein Dear who has caught his eye. Events out of their control happen and Calder is asked to help. I loved the festiveness and suspense of the story as Donner realizes you can not judge someone by what others have done. It is truly a magical tale of two opposites who come to love one another.

Review: This book is about the outwardly cold Snow or Doctor Frost. Snow’s character was a bit dark at times but I understood given his background. What surprised me was Jude, a paramedic was able to get through his walls to the caring man inside.

Jude was a strong force to be reckoned with. He wants the good doctor and so he goes after the man. Snow does not what hits him. I found it awesome that despite Snows firm control he knew when to let Jude lead.

Snow is a man with deep issues that often result in him needing something out of the ordinary. I really felt for Snow. He seemed almost lost at times. His connection with Lucas, Ian and Rowe is strong. A bond that will never die. He protects his friends at all costs.

When a ghost from the past emerges into the present Snow throws himself into discovering where the man is and finding out what he wants. When the truth is revealed sinister does not even begin to cover it.

Highly recommended.

Review: Blitz and Cupid have been best friends since college. They are both on the Rein Deer squad. But Cupid has a secret he has been keeping from everyone. When on a mission for Rudy Blitz and Cupid become closer and then run into problems along the journey.

A jealous and resentful person decides to tell the truth as they know it at a gathering and sends everyone into shock and betrayal. I loved this story. Blitz and Cupid are so sweet together. The atmosphere of the story is both jolly and adventurous.

Fantastic addition to the series. Highly recommended.

Review: I was interested in this series after reading Psycho Romeo and figuring out quickly from the beginning that there were other books connected that came first. So I requested the series and I’m so glad I did as I was taken on a superb roller coaster ride of a great mystery/suspense series.

Lucas’ life is in danger and so his good friend Rowe, who owns Ward Security, sends Andrei as a bodyguard to protect his friend. Lucas and Andrei are attracted to each other yet Andrei fights it as he has a job to do. We learn about the tight bond between Lucas, Snow, Rowe and Ian.

These men are strong and fierce when it comes to protecting the others. I loved their easy going yet teasing manner with each other. Lucas and Andrei were hot together.

The plot and mystery were edge of your seat worthy with A few action scenes thrown into the mix. A wonderful suspense, drama, and action packed start to a an amazing journey into four men’s lives and the men they meet, love and fight along the way to find happiness at the end of the dark tunnel they find themselves in.

Fantastic read. Highly recommended.

Blurb: Toby and Damon’s whirlwind romance continues, but can they find a balance between love and work? Do they even want to?

Toby can scarcely believe that his life has changed so much in less than two weeks, but it has. His predictable little life has gone from routine to sexually adventurous in a matter of days. And to be honest, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Damon’s just as into Toby, more interested in exploring with his new lover than spending all his time at the bar. Luckily things are running fairly smoothly there with his hand only occasionally needed on the rudder.

Their idyllic love affair has a few bumps to withstand, though, in the form of an intruder with a gun. Can Toby and Damon survive what happens next?

Review: Damon and Toby are back in this sequel as they continue to get to know one another. Toby is still in shock about his relationship with Damon while Damon is spending less time at work and more time with Toby.

More sexy explorations abound as Toby and Damon explore each other further in the bedroom and where ever else the need them. Hot and sexy read.

Great story.

Blurb: Sometimes unpredictable is exactly what’s needed, but can Corner Pub owner Damon convince shy Thursday night regular Toby of that?

Damon loves his life—his bar, his employees and his beer. He especially loves Thursdays. That’s when the mysterious little red-head dances into his bar, drinks two honey wheat brews, and flits right back out.

Toby’s comfortable. He has a good job, great friends, and he gets paid to do what he loves—sculpt. His life is great, if a little predictable. And if he secretly wears a plug to Corner Pub every Thursday, well…that’s nobody’s business but his.

But when Toby meets Damon, his predictable little life flies right out the window. Damon shows him the big, wide world of the Dom/sub lifestyle, plugs and piercings, and teaches him that maybe, unpredictable is exactly what Toby needed all along.

Review: This book has mostly sex in it and some humorous scenes as well. By the end of the book I felt as though Toby was still confused so I was confused as to why he was in a relationship with a Dom.

Never the less it was an entertaining read as I watched Toby stutter and seem to do whatever Damon tells him to do.

After reading I’m wondering about Toby and whether he was actually ready for sex and a relationship all at the same time.

Good read.

Blurb:Tomas Kemp has two successful novels to his name and the true belief that a successful sequel is only a matter of a little inspiration. When Tomas meets a mysterious stranger under the branches of an old oak tree, he feels compelled to tell him about a book he holds dear and the sequel he wants to read. But Cathal doesn’t share that deep belief that the sequel Tomas seeks ends happily. Cathal has seen enough of a world where stories are real to know that happy ever after is sometimes the dream that won’t come true.

But stories have never let Tomas down, and as he follows Cathal across the reality shift between their worlds, he learns that Cathal is right: Happy ever after is never just given—but sometimes, it can be fought for and won.

Review: Tomas is a writer with writer’s block. He decides a change of scenery is in order to hopefully find his spark again. But that’s not all he is hoping for. I liked Tomas’ moodiness. You never knew how he was going to be from time to time.

Cathal, I loved, was a mysterious character. The more I got to know him the more intrigued I became. Though the story starts out slow it begins to pick up after all is set in place. We get to see how the characters interact and communicate with one another.

The scenery is breathtaking as well tranquil at times. I felt as though I was there with them. A truly lovely story that had me from the start.

Fantastic read.

Blurb: Deputy US Marshal Miro Jones has a reputation for being calm and collected under fire. These traits serve him well with his hotshot partner, Ian Doyle, the kind of guy who can start a fight in an empty room. In the past three years of their life-and-death job, they’ve gone from strangers to professional coworkers to devoted teammates and best friends. Miro’s cultivated blind faith in the man who has his back… faith and something more.

As a marshal and a soldier, Ian’s expected to lead. But the power and control that brings Ian success and fulfillment in the field isn’t working anywhere else. Ian’s always resisted all kinds of tied down, but having no home—and no one to come home to—is slowly eating him up inside. Over time, Ian has grudgingly accepted that going anywhere without his partner simply doesn’t work. Now Miro just has to convince him that getting tangled up in heartstrings isn’t being tied down at all.

Review:  I first came across Mary Calmes when she wrote about Kage and Jory in A Matter of Time series.  There is something about a man with a gun that just wets my appetite and gives me what I want right off the bat.  The way she puts together a story just seems to captivate me throughout the whole story, so when I came across this series I knew it was going to be the same.  To top it off Kage is our sexy men’s boss.

With this story you have two very sexy US Marshals who start out partners at work but it soon builds into something very steamy.  Miro had wanted his partner for so long, but damn that man is straight.  However when Ian comes home from a tour, it soon becomes apparent that the man was more into Miro then he thought.  The first half is their partnership at work and the trouble these two seem to get into, and then it changes into something I really loved.

This story is told mainly from Miro’s perspective and you really do get to know a man when you are listening pretty good to what they are saying and wishing.  Ian is a big hit for me, because not only is he a US Marshal but he is also special forces, but there is a side that many do not get to see but his partner.  I have come across many stories where the characters are law enforcement, but you don’t really see that many with US Marshals so it was a big hit for me.

What made me laugh the most was at the beginning the others around were jealous that a newbie got to work with special forces, but then it turned to pity because Ian was the type to run headlong into danger and Miro just had to follow.  Which meant Miro would usually get banged up pretty good.

This story is so filled with actions, suspense, danger and some hot sex that your mind will be blown away.  I loved the two young witnesses and can’t wait to see if they get their own story in the future.  I had a lot of fun reading this and look forward to reading the next book.  I would definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves sexy men who are armed to the teeth.

Review: This book starts off showing the type of hell Leo has been living in for the past several months.  The fact that he thinks his second “master” isn’t as bad as the first because he doesn’t get raped is sad.  Leo has really given up.  He hopes that one night a vampire will finally take too much blood and kill him.  Or that maybe the drugs they force on him will.

Take one traumatized man and drop him into the lap of his lion shifter mate and watch the fireworks.  Yes, things move fast considering the hell Leo has been through, but again it’s only a novella.  So some leeway has to be given.  I think the biggest part is that Leo finally felt safe with Maddox.  Plus, there was the mating heat.

These two are cute together.  Leo is really cute totally deserved to have a big mate to protect and love him.  And really they are sexy hot together. There is even sex in the third shifter form.  Which is always interesting.

I first read this book when it was released in 2011.  I followed through on the others books in the series and was unhappy that the series didn’t continue when the publisher went defunct.  I am happy to see that Dawn H. Hawkes has found a new home and is releasing the series and hopefully continuing it.

It was great to revisit this story again after so long and I look forward to re-reading the others.

When fifteen-year-old Romeo’s mother leaves one day and doesn’t return, he finds himself homeless and trying to survive on the streets. Mute and terrified, his silence makes him vulnerable, and one night he is beaten by a gang of other kids, only to be rescued by a boy who pledges to take care of him.

Julian is barely two years older than Romeo. A runaway from an abusive home, he has had to make some difficult choices and sells himself on the street to survive. Taking care of Romeo changes him, gives him a purpose in life, gives him hope, and he tries to be strong and keep his troubles with drugs behind him. But living as they do is slowly destroying him, and he begins to doubt he can be strong enough.

This is the story of their struggle to find a way off the streets and stay together at all costs. But when events threaten to tear them apart, it is Romeo who must find the strength within himself to help Julian (and not let their love story turn into a Shakespearean tragedy).
