In the two months since the All Hallows’ Eve party, Tally has courted Haru, buying expensive gifts, taking the two of them to upscale restaurants and trying to find a balance in earning Haru’s fragile trust while being new parents to the Cohen joeys. Tally sees hope in the new domesticity the family has settled into, despite having some bumps along the way.

Gifts and treats have satisfied Haru’s otter, but the human half remembers the brutal lessons of giving their trust away. How can two lijun who barely know each other anticipate what will happen when times get tough? There are circumstances Tally doesn’t understand yet, and Haru struggles to find their feet with an Urusar who doesn’t know the rules.

A revelation not only throws the tentative relationship between them askew, but also starts Tally and Haru down a path the two of them can’t escape, one so heart-wrenching Haru’s not sure their heart will survive.

Traditionalist concerns that have always nipped at the Bastille clan’s heels come roaring to the forefront with demands and ultimatums. Tally needs to fall in line or face further threats to his otter, his family and his clan. Haru needs to find the strength to believe in the good despite the bad. In an environment where it’s vital to know ally from foe, Tally and Haru need to stand united or watch the community Tally’s family has built fall under the thumb of heartless, greedy autocrats.

Review: There was a lot going on in this continuation of the series. Haru and Tally are trying to settle in their new life but others conspire against them playing on the couples weaknesses and not knowing about certain things.

There is a deeper delve into the Lijun politics that was complex with a lot of rivalries thrown into the mix. A lot of characters are interwoven as certain individuals make plans behind others backs that are not on the up and up. I found the whole story intriguing.

Tally and Haru I felt needed to talk to each other and learn more about the other before cracks are found and the ones up to no good split them apart for good. I was thankful for the warning at the end of the blurb because that incident was sudden and utterly gut-wrenching to read.

Great read and addition to the series.

Review: Seth and Evan are on the path of the next witch to stop the ritual killing of their intended victim to bring back a powerful dark warlock. There is no shortage of suspense in this story. Evan and Seth also draw closer to each other as they get to know each other better.

I love this series. Seth wants those to pay for killing his brother and i do not blame him in the least. I was intrigued by how the series is going so far. Nail biting and edge of your seat this story captures your attention from start to finish as we follow along with Seth and Evan and their quest.

I truly loved this story. The journey was fraught with danger and at times the hotness between Seth and Evan set the pages on fire.

Fantastic read.

Review: Oh my god this story was so good. You have Vance and Sam who are partnered in the Enhanced team. Both men have issues that are similar but yet different. They are on a case of drugs being used with enhanced blood. An undercover mission reveals sinister goings on and it’s up to the team to stop it. Sam sends Vance mixed signals due to his past and his hang up with large guys which is to be expected. Vance is a gentle giant and understanding.

This series just keeps getting better and better the further along it continues. I love how each investigation is well thought out and written. New and old characters are always intertwined with twists and turns that have edge of your seat, nail biting results with action scenes that have you holding your breath awaiting the outcome.

It’s one of my favorite series to date as I simply adore the enhanced in this series. I am so looking forward to reading more especially with the way this story ended.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Blurb: — Being kidnapped by two werewolves is an adventure after all, right? Right?! —

Quinn

If Quinn wants to get the best photos for his travel blog, no gate is too tall, and no ‘do not enter’ sign actually means he won’t go in. What he finds in a hidden exclusion zone by Chernobyl blows his mind. Mutants? Monsters? He doesn’t know, but he is bound to find out when not one but two of them break into his hotel.
Too bad the rules and attitudes they have toward sex don’t match Quinn’s at all.

Dima

Born with a disabled hand, smaller than the other werewolves, Dima is the lowest of the low in his pack, but when he meets the loveliest human he’s ever seen, he knows his luck has changed.
The last thing he expects though is his beloved friend Nazar turning on him once Dima’s affection for Quinn deepens, and he refuses to be mounted by Nazar anymore.

Nazar

Nazar is a high ranking soldier in his pack, but in his powerful body hides a gentle soul, and all he wants is to escape the pack with Dima. But once Dima claims Quinn as his, secrets Nazar has so far kept hidden rear their ugly head.
The werewolf language doesn’t have words to describe what they crave, so Quinn might be the only one to help them solve the puzzle of the desires that go against the rules of their pack.

Shorty’s Review: 💖💖💖💖💖4 1/2 Hearts

Quinn has wanted to visit Chernobyl and take pictures so he goes on a tour. The guides strongly caution them not to go into the darkened area on the map. Of course Quinn does not listen. There he discovers a beast roaming around but it seems friendly. He ends up having to be rescued due to injuring himself.

Dima is the werewolf he met. Dima tells his lover Nazar what he experienced and the two hatch a plan to snare themselves a human. I liked these three together. Nazar only turned human once. The rest he is in werewolf form, but Dima stole my heart. I felt for him and what he has been thrown being the bottom of the pack and disfigured. I like that Nazar took up for him when he noticed others picking on him.

It was an interesting mix of characters and details surrounding the pack that lives near Chernobyl.

Great read.

Lisa’s Review: 💖💖💖 3 Hearts

Nazar is one of the stronger wolves and Dima’s protector. He has a big heart and loves Dima quite a bit. He protects Dima, because to the pact Dima is not only the lowest of the pack but should have been culled at birth. They are at different ends of the spectrum when it comes to the pack.

Quinn is a travel blogger and pretty good at his job. He looks for the unexpected and usually gets in trouble for it. So here he was looking at the old land after the big bomb destroyed much of it, to what it looked like now. Here his guides were warning him and the others to stay away from the black zone, well Quinn is stubborn to say the least. He heads straight for it and comes across something he had never expected, Dima in werewolf form.

Kidnapped by two werewolves is not exactly what he had expected but his curiosity is going to get him into trouble. Dima is the one that falls first, but a threesome is going to be in his future.

Ok first off I am going to say that this was the longest feeling book I have ever came across. It had more detail to it but it didn’t turn out the way it was suppose to in my eyes. It felt a bit off and fell flat in many parts. I didn’t care for the characters at all, except for Dima. Quinn was an ass and didn’t really show me that he truly loved Dima. As for Nazar, he still called Dima his brother instead of his mate near the end. Plus he turns on Dima, who was suppose to be his best friend, just because he has feelings for another. It just felt off to me.

Overall I couldn’t get into the book like I should have. It was a bit on the dull side and didn’t really catch my attention at all. I felt disappointed in it and can’t say that I would read it any more than this one time.

Hunted for the unique blood that runs through his veins, half-angel, half-demon Gabriel Sinclair lives without expectations. On the run from forces on both sides of an ancient conflict, he searches for strength and peace in a world which only seeks to use him.

When Gabriel is forced to stop running, assigned a team—and a mate—he doesn’t want, and reluctantly tasked with a mission, he must overcome obstacles both real and imagined. Otherwise, the world as he knows it, and the mate he’s reluctantly come to care for, may cease to exist.

Evander Ryan is special, and he knows it. The final handcrafted immortal warrior for the light, he is the Creator’s greatest masterpiece. For fifty-eight years, he’s lived his life in black and white, coddled by his Maker, while leading his team to countless victories against their enemies. Those fights were easy. Working with a new, uncooperative mate who sees the world in shades of gray? Less so.

As Evander’s eyes are opened to the existence of light warriors who are not good, dark warriors who are, and the wider world of supernatural beings, he learns nothing is as he thought it was, and his mate isn’t who he thought he was either. Maybe there’s something to be said for not always following the rules. . .

Review: Gabriel is the kind of guy that pulls no punches in anything he does. This is never truer when his uncles Michael and Barrados, ask him to team up with Evander and his group to track down Gabriel’s father. He is not happy with this at all and it shows. Imagine his surprise when Michael tells him he has to mate with Evander who does not want to mate with him either but will do his duty.

I loved everything about this story except for the parts that seemed a little long winded. The action, suspense and mystery were off the charts. I loved that not all the characters got along at first and it made for some tense moments within the group.

I really like the way the story progressed with the many twists and turns that had me on the edge of my seat making me wonder what was going to happen next. I am hoping we learn more about the rest of the crew as the series continues.

Fantastic read.

Reunited and reignited.

While cutting through the Interstices—the post-creation gap between realms—Smith, half-demon tech specialist for Enchanted Occasions Event Planning, spies the person he yearns for daily but dreads seeing again: the ifrit, Hashim of the Windrider clan.

On their one literally smoldering night together, Smith, stupidly besotted, revealed his true name—a demon’s greatest vulnerability. When Hashim didn’t return the favor, then split the next morning with no word? Message received, loud and clear: Thanks but no, thanks.

Although Hashim had burned to return Smith’s trust, it was impossible. The wizard who conjured him holds his true name in secret, and unless Hashim discovers it, he’ll never be free.

When their attraction sparks once more, the two unite to search for Hashim’s hidden name—which would be a hell of a lot easier if they didn’t have to contend with a convention full of food-crazed vampires on the one day out of the century they can consume something other than blood.

But if they fail, Hashim will be doomed to eternal slavery, and their reignited love will collapse in the ashes.

Luckily Smith is the guy who gets shit done. And Hashim is never afraid to heat things up.

But with Enchanted Occasions’ latest booking—a competition for the hand of Faerie’s one true prince—crashing around his ears, it’s really difficult to toe that particular line. But if Andy pretends to be a contender for the prince…. It’s only temporary, so Odin can’t blame him. Right?

Conall of Odstone’s half-brother, Prince Reyner, was supposed to choose a mate before being crowned and wed. But the idiot left Con to impersonate him. Again.

When Con meets Andy, his anger turns to desire… and despair. Even if Andy forgives him for his imposture, how could someone eligible for a prince’s hand settle for the court outcast? Review: Nudging Fate looked and indeed was a very sweet romance which is based on a comedy of err… little white lies and miscommunication. When I saw the author’s name, I had initially thought that I had read a cowboy story Dreampsun Desires by the same author which I enjoyed, but alas, the book cover that I had in my head was a book by BA Tortuga and that EJ Russel doesn’t have any books published is Desires anyway. So, no idea what I was thinking, and I didn’t let that stop me from diving in.

The thing that really did draw me in for Nudging Fate was what appeared to be a heavy Norse mythology influence. (I blame the book my sister had called Indiana Jones Explores the Vikings. I’ve been fascinated with them ever since and the mosaic of Jörmungandr, the World (Midgard) Serpent, really hooked me).

The book itself follows Anders Skuldsson, he’s an event planner for the supernatural world, the company being called Enchanted Occasions. He loves his work and is very good at what he does. However, because of who and what he is, Anders can manipulate the fates of people. He is therefore under orders to never do so or face a harsh punishment from Odin himself. The story finds him knee deep in planning the choosing of a Prince’s consort by a series of dates and challenges that makes it like a royal version of the Bachelor. All Anders’ orders came from the now absent Queen. However, when he meets the Prince, Anders is immediately attracted to the man and pretends to be one of the contenders.

Little does Anders know that Prince Reyner is actually Conall Oddstone. The Prince’s bastard, illegitimate brother who had been conceived after the Queen’s Consort had a love spell cast. The outfall from that one event has left both the Prince and Conall deeply affected, especially when their father was transformed into an Wyvern as an act of revenge. Conall has masqueraded as his brother numerous times but only when the queen absent as she is the only one that can see through their deception. Conall hates the pretending, especially when he starts to fall for Anders and Anders is under the impression that Conall is his brother Prince Reyner.

With a pain in the butt brother and something running afoul in the games that would choose Reyner his consort, Conall and Anders still manage to steal time away to fall in love. But when the truth comes out, it turns out that this entire situation is far more complicated. There isn’t really a cliffhanger. Anders and Conall get their HEA. Yet, I would like to know the fate of some of the minor characters (and hope they find love) after the havoc that was wreaked between the games and the coronation of the new king.

To be perfectly honest, part of what happened at the end was perfectly predictable. To a certain extent, the whole of the ending was predictable. And that is probably the only reason I didn’t give this one a 5/5. Despite being enjoyable, the drama was a little flat. Regardless, I am looking forward to more from Enchanting Occasions and I would love to have a little resolution for one minor character in particular.

Blurb: Wendell “Wen” Darling lives in a world of shoulds and musts. Left to care for his brother and sister by his dull drudge of a father and wacko irresponsible mother, he suppresses his creativity, slaving in an ad agency 70 hours a week, letting his no-talent supervisor take the credit.

Then his bosses blow the campaign for their biggest client and Wen gets a chance to shine – but only if he can find the artist who painted a wild, glorious wall of graffiti in the subway. Hiding behind a pillar at 2:00 a.m., Wen comes face-to-face with the scarlet-haired, elven-faced embodiment of his divergent opposite – Peter Panachek, the flighty, live-for-today painter, singer, and leader of the rock group the Lost Boys.

Everything Wen takes seriously, Peter laughs off, but opposites attract, even if their kisses always lead to battles. Peter’s devil-may-care persona hides a world of secrets, self-protection, and hidden fears, until the day a drug dealer, Vadon Hooker, threatens everything Wen holds dear. Guided by the mysterious Mr. Pennymaker, Peter has to choose between facing responsibility or burrowing even deeper into Neverland.

Review: I started listening to the audiobook of Never with mixed feelings. I really do like Tara Lain’s writing and have adored all three previous books in the Pennymaker Tales series. However, I recently had problems and just couldn’t connect to and finish two of Lain’s books in Dreamspun Beyond, so I had worried that perhaps either the author’s writing had changed or there had been a subtle change in what I like to read personally. I mean, the latter can happen at any time and has nothing to do with the author of any book.

As for the series itself I really love the concept. It is a contemporary story set against the background of well-known fairytales (ie Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and Peter Pan). There is also something of an urban fantasy element in the language used by Lain for one minor character who is the essence of the entire series, helping the couples to find each other, Carstairs Pennymaker.

As I said, I love all three previous points and I have to say that I was not disappointed with the fourth book, I adored Never. Lain has created a very quirky but relatable and fun world in this story that really did border into urban fantasy. The audio narration by Kale Williams was also fantastic, his naturally soft voice suited both MCs.

Never is the story of Wendell “Wen” Darling and the mysterious Peter Panachek – see the Peter Pan references rush in now. There’s a Hook[er], a Schmee, Tinkerbelle, The Lost Boys and even Neverland. However, being a Blackadder fan, jokes made about Wen’s surname also make me think of Blackadder Goes Forth with Captain Darling, named exactly for the purpose of these jokes. Being that this was based on Peter Pan there are some clear parallels in the plot line of both stories.

Additionally, those that grew up loving the movie Hook will probably find it easier to relate to the modern setting of the movie and reconciling it with the book.

Wen is a struggling advertising worker. He works crazy hours just to keep a shabby roof over the heads of himself, his eleven-year-old brother and sixteen-year-old sister. Wen is in a lot of trouble at work when his job is left on the line after a lazy manager verges on losing the ad agency one of their biggest clients after giving a stale idea for the campaign. Wen’s boss gives him a chance to make it up and it leads Wen on a crazy ride, leading him to Peter Panachek. Wen and Peter are very difficult, yet at the same time with a mysterious past its clear that Peter really isn’t all that dissimilar to Wen. Peter has a bit of a hero complex and despite being afraid that he will be found by his family after running away two years ago, he will help Wen so that he doesn’t lose his job and become unable to feed his siblings.

Both Wen come with a tonne of baggage. Peter doesn’t like the stodgy world that Wen lives in and thinks that he acts like an old man. While, on the other hand, Wen thinks that Peter is too irresponsible and vague, reminding Wen and his siblings of their absent mother.

And, of course, there is the enigmatic Carstairs Pennymaker. A seemingly rich entrepreneur who is ready to help save the day and make sure the couples find a way to see that they truly belong together. This character injects a sense of whimsy that irresistible, albeit you may need to suspend your disbelief just for moment to believe in him.

Review: Quenched in Blood is the third book in Ari McKay’s Asheville Aracana series. If you’ve not read the previous books in this series, you won’t be able to follow with a great deal of the plot, as it is an ongoing story that started way back in book 1. To be honest I had to go back and reacquaint myself with the previous books as I had forgotten some of the details and found myself a little muddled at first.

I was really looking forward to this book, after falling in love with Eli and Arden and then with Whimsy and Harlan

I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for Arden and Whimsey’s best friend, Julian.

Julian is your typical brooding, loner vampire. He is best friends with Arden, who has known him 300 years, and who later introduced Julian to Whimsy. They were not only Julian’s only true friends, aside from the people that he knew professionally in the business of demon hunting (which obviously has a high mortality rate), but they were also his lovers when he needed physical touch and pleasure. However, that all changed when Arden, a half elf, and Whimsy, a mage, found their mates. In their individual stories, both friends worried for Julian and his loneliness.

The ongoing story of this series is the rise in possessed shifters and demons being summoned to earth, which could be apocalyptic unless the small group of paranormals in Arcana figure out how to find the artifact that could save them all. The only problem is that this could mean the death of some much loved characters. Julian who knows more than a thing or two about what’s they are dealing with, meets Thomas in the pursuit for clues.

Thomas comes from a long line of demon hunters who descended from an angel. However, he had no clue about any of this. His parents had died and recently his grandfather had died as well. When Julian arrives at the failing family farm where Thomas lives, Thomas’ entire world had changed. Now Thomas dives into a world of demons and training to fight demons. Julian is his teacher and the two of the find that they have some pretty hot chemistry quite quickly. Julian is reticent to let Thomas is but that is all part of his charm and is half the drama of the story.

That was a wonderful end (pretty sure it’s the end) to the series. Julian has shaped up into a fantastic character, who is so much deeper than the brooding vampire that he had first presented. He has a lot on his mind and is wicked intelligence. Thomas is also a great guy to get to know, the only thing is that his character didn’t develop quite so deeply as I had hoped he would. However, together both guys are dynamite. I really loved reading this story, fans of paranormal fiction, those that have read this series will love this story.

Vampire With Benefits

(Supernatural Selection 02)
by

E.J. Russell

A match between a vampire and shifter could be deadly—but this broken beaver doesn’t give a dam.

Silent film actor Casimir Moreau had imagined that life as a vampire would be freewheeling and glamorous. Instead, he’s plunged into a restrictive society whose rules he runs afoul of at every turn. To “rehabilitate” him, the vampire council orders him mated to an incubus with impeccable breeding who’ll mold Cas into the upstanding vampire he ought to be. Or else.

As an inactive beaver shifter, construction engineer Rusty Johnson has fought—and overcome—bias and disrespect his entire life. But when his longtime boyfriend leaves him for political reasons, Rusty is ready to call it a day. Next stop? Supernatural Selection and his guaranteed perfect mate, a bear shifter living far away from Rusty’s disapproving clan.

But then a spell snafu at Supernatural Selection robs both men of their intended husbands. Rusty can’t face returning to his clan, and Cas needs somebody on his arm to keep the council happy, so they agree to pretend to be married. Nobody needs to know their relationship is fake—especially since it’s starting to feel suspiciously like the real thing.

Will love mean rebirth… or death?

Vampire Julian Schaden has been warning the Asheville Paranormal Council of an impending demonic incursion for more than two decades. Over the past two years, he and his friends have fought as hard as they can with little help, since Micah Carter, the demon hunter who should have led them, shirked his responsibility and then perished.

Desperate for anything that might aid the fight, Julian enters the Carter property and finds something he never dared hope for: young Thomas Carter, the heir to a long line of demon hunters.

Thomas knows nothing about the supernatural world. But the prospect of a real life, outside the sheltered, isolated farm where he grew up, calls to him, and the idea of fighting the Unholy feels right.

Julian agrees to train Thomas, but he struggles against an unexpected, unwanted attraction. Thomas is too young and innocent to get involved with Julian, but opposites attract, and this is one battle Julian seems fated to lose. But a prophecy from a dying mage comes with a bleak warning: the upcoming battle will claim Thomas’s life. To keep his home and friends safe, Julian may have to sacrifice the only love he’s ever known.

The Burning Magus

(Blue Unicorn 03)

Love can make a good crime go bad.

JT was a perfectly happy orc building cars in the Arizona desert until his old friend and sometimes lover Austin showed up and talked him into one last crime. Now “one last crime” has snowballed. With a new team of thieves — a supersoldier, a hacker, a driver, a graffiti artist, and a seafaring wizard — JT and Austin are determined to free an artificial intelligence from the dungeon of the Burning Magus.

For JT, this job is more than a prison break; it’s a do-over of The Job That Went Bad two years ago, the catastrophe in which JT lost his closest friend and then chose to abandon everything, even Austin. Maybe this time no one will die. Maybe this time JT can return to Arizona and bury his old life for good.

Except Austin won’t be buried. After two years alone, Austin knows he wants JT — not just as a partner in crime, but as the lover he always should have been. Maybe this time they won’t make the same mistakes, especially when it comes to each other.

Review: Simon and Vic head to Pittsburgh to spend Thanksgiving with Vic’s family. It’s a lively and entertaining holiday until a ghost intrudes and asks for Simon’s help about her murder. What they discover is she passed by mysterious means and the perp is not finished.

I really enjoyed the whole story. It was well balanced and entertaining. The mystery part was intriguing and kept me on my toes. Simon and Vic are a great couple to read about.

Great read.

Blurb: Detective Zach Johnson never resented his lack of magic, although he hated that as a mundane he had no power to stop a corrupt Talent council from stealing the resources of the magical community. However, the return of the ancient ifrit guides led a blood-thirsty hummingbird to choose him as a partner. Now he can be a true equal to his shaman lover, Art Lammas, and the two of them can take on the council and the entire community if need be.

Art Lammas loves Zach’s enthusiasm and sense of justice, but the Talent community is much more complex than he assumes. Not only does El Paso struggle under the corrupt leadership of the council, but it stands at a place where three different traditions clash: the Vatican-trained shamans from Mexico, the Egyptian-trained shamans of mainstream America, and the Native Peoples traditions, which are far more complex than Art can possibly describe. Art would far rather focus on solving their cases. More than that, Art fears that Talent might be the one force in the universe that could drive a wedge between them. Art would happily burn all the magic out of the world before allowing that to happen, but he may not have that choice.

Review: I adored Zach and Art in this story. They have a solid relationship with the other as they work their cases. I loved how well they worked together and how the story evolved. The continuation of the series was apparent as struggles over power and the many different shamans are prevalent in this continuation.

There is not a lot of action in the story it’s more an explanation of different things that overall add to the series as a whole in the understanding of things happening. Art tries his best to stay out of the magical situations when they pop up.

I simply loved this addition to the series. I am looking forward to the next installment where we will hopefully find out who the evil ifrit is.

Great read.
