Blurb: Owner of Matey’s Tavern, a popular brewpub-tavern in St. Augustine, Florida, Derick Keyes loves his adopted hometown and job. He also harbors a crush on a pirate captain.

Tour guide for the popular Pirate Pub Walking Tour, Christopher Easton portrays a pirate captain as he takes visitors on a guided tour of St. Augustine, stopping at certain taverns for a pint of grog and tales of the golden age of piracy. With a little liquid courage, Chris breaks the cycle when he talks to Derick. Things change between them. Derick wants a chance for more with Chris.

During the Annual Pirate Festival, Derick creates a treasure hunt for Chris after “cursing” him. To break the curse, Chris must find four clues before the final battle on Sunday night. Only then can the curse be broken.

States of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the United States.

Review: Derick loves owning a pub in St. Augustine but sometimes finds the crowds overwhelming, the one time he can be found at the bar is when the pirate tour is passing through because he has a crush on his favorite pirate captain. Chris is a tour guide on the Pirate Pub Walking Tour and he’s secretly admired the owner of Matey’s Tavern for a couple of years but has never had the courage to approach him, until he has a little liquid courage one night.

This is a really cute story that is fun and sweet. Derick has social anxiety and Chris finds it hard talking to people one on one, they’ve both liked the other man for years but neither man has had the courage to approach the other man. Chris liquors up so he can finally talk to Derick, and it’s the beginning of a sweet, hot courtship.

Both Derick and Chris are great characters, we get to know a little about each of them and we learn that both Derick and Chris have a lot in common. Derick surprises us with his curse on Chris, and it’s fun watching both men come together as Chris hunts for clues.

I enjoyed this story and loved the way that Derick and Chris’ courtship played out, it was fun and at times hot and it was great to see them getting to know each other in the limited time they had together. Their attraction to each other is explosive but gentle at the same time, you can see that they will have a passionate relationship that is also built on more than just sex.

I recommend this story to those who love fun light stories, great characters, sexy men, overcoming your anxieties and sweet happy endings.

Blurb: A Fairy Tales of the Open Road Novel

Modern-day fairy-tale princess Taylor Hatfield has problems. One, he’s a guy. Two, he’s an insomniac Sleeping Beauty. Three, his practically perfect brother, Atticus Hatfield, this generation’s Snow White, has been irrevocably corrupted by the Witchking. The Library, a clandestine organization, seeks to write “The End” on Atticus, and Taylor is given the impossible task when his own parents endorse his brother’s demise. With his true love, the huntsman Corentin Devereaux, at his side, they once again set out to find Atticus, but Atticus won’t go down without a fight.

The quest ends how it began. But instead of the quirky, corkscrewing Americana road trip, Taylor and Corentin must contend with the dangers of the urban jungle. With an unexpected ally at their side, they’re forced to question all they know about the legacy of Snow White.

As the world of the Enchants and the mundane hang in the balance, Taylor knows what he must do: go pick an apple.

Review: This story is part of a series and must be read in order.

Okay, so we re-join Taylor and Corentin in Lex Chase’s completely off the wall Fairy Tales of the Open Road series (aka Screw-up Princess and Skillful Huntsman), now you can’t just pick this story up and join the series (because it would be a serious mind fuck) you have to read this series from the beginning to even have a clue what was going on and to understand what’s happening.

Being honest I’m completely flummoxed on how to write this review, because everything that’s happening in this book is the result of what happened in the previous books… *shakes head* bloody Atticus. Okay I’ll give it my best shot!

After Atticus steals The Book from the Library Taylor and Corentin are given the task of finding a certain object that will finally bring an end to Atticus’ reign of terror, but they have to work with Idi the Witchking (who is Atticus’ true love) and then the journey of ‘OMG what the hell is going on’ begins. Hmmm yeah Lex Chase takes us on yet another journey with Taylor and Corentin that is just too crazy for words.

So loads of ‘huh’ moments, quite a few ‘what the hell’ moments and several ‘bloody Atticus has lost his freaking mind’ moments. This is an amazing story that has so many things going on/ overlapping that you can just keep the thread of the story while personally wishing you could get your hands on Atticus and shove the ‘certain object’ down his throat yourself.

There’s plenty of danger, lots of more danger and some more danger to boot, there some shocking betrayals, a couple of Wandering Path journeys, seeking help from a troll, facing The Emeraldine Beast, and the final showdown. There are twists and turns, ducking and diving, hunting and hiding and just… hell I told you it would be hard to describe.

This is a fantastic story that is brilliantly written and will take you on a journey that is just brilliant, it might make you wish that you’d never begun the journey but you’ll enjoy being dragged every step of the way. Lex Chase has written a trilogy that has ended in an explosive ending and it’s not till the last couple of pages that you find out if true love actually won out!

I recommend this to those who love urban fantasy, who adore journeys into the unknown, who love characters that you adore and those you hate/sympathise with, who love well-crafted stories, and just maybe a true loves ending.

Blurb: Malcolm Webber is still grieving the loss of his partner of twenty years to cancer. He’s buried his mind and feelings in his legal work and isn’t looking for another relationship. He isn’t expecting to feel such a strong attraction when he meets Hans Erickson—especially since the man is quite a bit younger than him.

Hans is an adventure writer with an exciting lifestyle to match. When he needs a tax attorney to straighten out an error with the IRS, he ends up on the other side of the handsome Malcolm’s desk. The heat between them is undeniable, but business has to come first. When it’s concluded, Hans leaps on the chance to make his move.

Malcolm isn’t sure he’s ready for the next chapter in his life. Hans is so young and active that Malcolm worries he won’t be able to hold his interest for long. Just when he’s convinced himself to take the risk and turn the page, problems at the law office threaten to end their love story before it can really begin.

Review: Malcolm lost the love of his life to cancer just over a year ago and he is still grieving, his family and friends encourage him to start to live his life again even if it’s just getting together with friends but Malcolm is reluctant. When a new client walks through his door a spark of interest is ignited but Malcolm worries it’s too soon and Hans too young. Hans is interested in the tax attorney who helped him out but it isn’t until they bump into each other at a restaurant that Hans gets the chance to flirt. As their relationship progresses Malcolm can’t help but worry, but his relationship with Hans is the least of his troubles when a problem at work threatens to take away everything that is being built.

This is a great story of two older men who have both suffered loss and who find love again. I loved both Malcolm and Hans, they fit together quite well and they have a spark that isn’t just sexual but a meeting of two personalities that mesh well together. Malcolm is a well-respected attorney and Hans a popular author, they hit it off from their first meeting and while Hans is happy to dive right into a relationship Malcolm is more wary.

Malcolm is 52 so he worries that the younger Hans (42) will soon get bored with him as Malcolm has slowed down as he’s got older, Hans isn’t worried in the least he’s quite happy to enjoy the ski slopes while Malcolm takes it easy but Malcolm’s doubts keep eating away at him. Malcolm also has to worry about his firm as a problem arises; it also leads to him facing danger as a man blames Malcolm for all his troubles.

I really enjoyed this story and its slower pace, we see two characters who aren’t the young sexy boys we normal see, they are older and have both had long term relationships, they aren’t interested in going out clubbing and hooking up, they are more interested in quite nights in, nights with close friends and easy enjoyable weekends away. It’s lovely to see a story about characters over forty finding love again and the support that these characters give each other in their time of need.

I recommend this to those who love love stories for more seasoned characters, who adore men who give love another go, who love characters who support each other and are there in times of need.

Blurb: Dan White is trying to acclimate to civilian life after a long career in the military with multiple combat deployments.

Now he’s home in the Austin area, living with his brother Dixon, Dixon’s husband, Audie, and their two nine-year-olds. During the New Year celebration, Dan meets Abraham Weldon, and the connection is instant.

There’s a kiss. There’s a dance. There’s a proposition.

Then Dan finds out Weldon is bisexual.

And a dad.

With five kids. Five kids, one of whom is a blind fifteen-year-old.

Weldon has been in love twice in his life—with his high school best friend, Blake, and with his wife, Krista, who he met in a Dairy Queen as she was crying over a positive pregnancy test. Love number three hits Weldon like a hammer when he meets Dan.

But since Dan isn’t interested in a guy with kids, they might only get one night together.

Review: Dan is recently out of the military, staying with his brother Dix and wondering what he will do with his life now. While celebrating New Year Dan meets Weldon Dix’s neighbor and its instant lust, but Weldon has five children and Dan isn’t ready for that type of commitment. Weldon is looking for permanence from any person he has a relationship with, but there’s something about Dan that he just has to have a taste of, they might only have one night together but it’s a night that neither man will forget.

This is a superb story where love sneaks in and knocks both men for six. Dan is still finding his feet after being in the military for years, he’s finding it difficult to find a job and he suffers from the occasional nightmare from his time in combat. A relationship is something he isn’t looking for but he gets knocked off his feet by Weldon and his family. Weldon has a fantastic family; it’s been over three years since his wife died and he’s now looking for someone to share it with, Dan is honest and caring and Weldon wishes he was ready for more than just hook-ups.

Weldon’s children Jakob, Emma, Madison, MacKenzie & Caleb are little stars of this story; they are absolute holy terrors/cherubs and make you grin. While Weldon and Dan are dancing round the relationship dilemma and Dan accepts that he might want more than just a fling with Weldon the kids are all in the background and have an impact on Dan that he never thought would happen… they wormed their way into his heart.

The story is very easy going for the most part, Dan and Weldon fall into a relationship after Dan sorts himself out, but danger lurks when Jakob keeps secrets. This story isn’t just about Dan and Weldon, it’s about building a new family, dealing with settling into a new way of life and helping children deal with growing up.

I loved how this story was written, there is angst but it isn’t really coming from the adults (except parenting angst, there’s plenty of that!), we see how Dan and Weldon deal with their relationship (really easy going), we see the children dealing with a new man in their dad’s life, we see the normal sibling teasing & secrets and how it affects them and we see a strong family being built before our eyes.

I recommend this to those who love fantastic characters, who adore rambunctious children, who love a dash of tension and angst, and love characters who become exceptional when they love the right man.

The team wants someone they can trust. Someone in the inner circle. That someone is Kerry. But what will happen when Kerry realizes that for him, the romance is no longer pretend? Can Jericho love him back, or is he just playing a role?

Purchase Link: https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/marriage-of-inconvenience-by-mj-oshea-7397-b

Review: Jericho is sick and tired of pretending to be straight, he wants the freedom to date who he wants but his agent and publicist have him living the playboy lifestyle parading around with beautiful women. But one moment of weakness is about to jeopardise the role that could catapult him to the big time. Kerry works as a publicist and when one of his firm’s big clients is photographed in a compromising position Kerry is given the choice be a ‘team player’ and play Jericho’s fiancé or watch as ranks are closed and Kerry is frozen out.

This is a great romance where two people are thrown together to save both of their careers. Jericho is filled with bitter resentment over having to hide in the closet, having the doors blown off gives him some relief but then he’s stuck with a fame hungry publicist to save his new series role. Kerry is caught in a situation he hates, stuck with a celebrity who makes his feelings for him plain and thrust into the spotlight that he comes to loathe, and caught by the short instances where Jericho makes him feel special.

I enjoyed this story and grew to like both characters, I really liked Kerry right off the bat, he’s a down to earth guy who just wants to progress up the ladder at his job. He has a bit of a crush on Jericho but Jericho’s treatment of him has Kerry torn. Jericho takes a while to warm up to, he behaves like a spoiled brat at times and you really want to smack some sense into him at times, but when he turns on the charm and behaves like a grown adult he just creeps in and slithers into your heart.

Jericho and Kerry are both great characters and you do root for them to get it together and admit their feelings, their relationship has its ups and downs, and you have got to love a guy like Kerry who can fall in love with a guy whose moods seemed mercurial. Jericho and Kerry are hot together, they click when both men let their walls down and although we only see one instance of on page sex their burgeoning love shines through with how they act towards each other.

I recommend this to those who love some tension in their romances, who love characters who overcome voices of the past, who accept love freely offered and a sweet happy ending.

Blurb: Sam Becker, a horse whisperer, agrees to take one last job before retiring to his Texas ranch. It’s clear as soon as he meets the Taylor family in Kentucky that he’s in for a challenge. What he doesn’t expect is the way his own wounds reopen. He’s never really dealt with the suicide of his mentally ill wife, and he won’t be able to ignore that hurt forever.

Joshua Taylor and his horse, Calla, were a force to be reckoned with on the eventing circuit until an accident ended their careers. Most of the pain is on the inside, however, and Sam knows those injuries are the slowest to mend. Sam’s unique methods help Calla and, surprisingly, Josh, but he’s still lost without riding. Their feelings for each other come hard and fast, and Josh starts his first steps of recovery, but Sam needs to return to Texas eventually. Even if Josh is able to move past the accident, they’ll still have a long and difficult journey to make before they can be together.

Purchase Link: https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/one-step-forward-by-tia-fielding-7342-b

Review: When Calla’s owners beg horse whisperer Sam for help their plight touches his heart, because the Taylor’s are hoping that Calla’s recovery will help their son, Joshua, who was injured in the same accident that ended Calla’s eventing career.

Sam loves working with horses; he helps to rehabilitate them from abuse, neglect or injury. When he’s called in to help Calla he knows before his plane has touched down that he’ll be helping Calla’s rider as well, a talented young event rider who has sunk into the pit of depression. His attraction to Joshua is unexpected and Sam isn’t sure if he’s ready to embark on a relationship after the loss of his wife.

Joshua has been ghosting through life for the last year; severely injured in a riding accident he can’t seem to pull himself out of the tar pit of depression. He hasn’t even been able to look at Calla since the accident, he rarely interacts with his family and it’s rare that he eats. But there’s something about the horse whisperer that draws him in and he begins to live again, slowly but surely he emerges from his closed off world.

This is a great story where two men begin to heal each other; Sam helps to heal Joshua’s feelings of helplessness and guilt and Joshua helps to heal the wounds that Sam’s wife’s death left on Sam. Their attraction to each other becomes apparently quickly and it’s a slow start but heats up quickly.

The story is paced quite well although it does seem to drag in some places, maybe just too much wandering around in Sam’s perspective. The story is also from Joshua’s perspective but we seem to stay a lot in Sam’s so although we do get to see things from Joshua’s side of things it does seem to linger on Sam’s side for a fair amount of the story.

The writing is excellent; it gives a superb view point of depression, the lingering clinging depression and the flashes and flare ups of recurring depression. Depression is a really hard subject to write about; it’s different for everyone who suffers from depression, for some it is brief flashes of cloud in a clear blue sky, for others it’s a tar pit that they struggle to pull themselves out of and for others it’s an oil slick where you go forward two paces and slide back three, where you seem to finally be free only to discover a small speck that clings on no matter how hard you try to scrub it, and it’s beautifully written about in this story.

The relationship with Sam and Joshua is a really good one; they both give themselves time to sort themselves out before making a solid commitment although I do think that they could have at least had phone conversations in their time apart rather than no contact at all.

I recommend this to those who love stories about recovering yourself, adore characters who have suffered but come out stronger, who love loving families, and relationships that are worked for.

Review: Lucas is seeking revenge after justice failed, the man who caused his sister’s death walked away with a pathetic sentence from the courts and now Lucas wants him dead. When a friend gives Lucas the name of a man who might be able to help him Lucas seeks him out, and Dante turns him away. Dante can’t understand why his old friend Avery sent Lucas to see him; he learns quickly that Avery sent Lucas for another reason, one that Lucas missed.

As Lucas plans his next move, Dante watches over him to make sure he doesn’t do something to ruin his life. The loss of a friend brings the men face to face again and this time they act on their desire for each other, but with Lucas still acting shifty and Dante watching Lucas’ every move will honesty clear a way or will it drive a wedge between the two men?

Okay this story isn’t really quite a mystery or a thriller, it doesn’t really have BDSM except more on a peripheral view and if it wasn’t set in the future I’d have said it was contemporary with a dash of suspense. There’s a lot of pain and grief as Lucas tries to make sense of the death of his sister. We also get some despondency from Dante as he faces his two girls embracing adulthood and wanting to spread their wings.

The relationship between Lucas and Dante was okay but nothing to write home about, other than a brief flash of attraction between Lucas and Dante I couldn’t feel the connection between the two men, it seemed to just pop and fizz occasionally but I think that the other emotions always seemed to drag it down.

The revenge seeking was thought out really well, Lucas’ planning shows how serious he is and Dante’s watchful eye means that we know that whatever happens Lucas has a guardian angel watching out for him. I liked the back story of both men, and how they come together to kind of heal each other. But I was expecting more, from the tone of the story I was expecting for Lucas to come out victorious and being able to visit his sisters grave and telling her justice had been found… what I didn’t expect was for it to be a hollow victory or to fizzle quite like it did.

This story had huge potential, all the elements were there and there are some great characters, but, it just missed its mark for me. I think this is the first book in a series and I must admit that although this story missed its mark for me there was something in the last chapter that has me hoping that there will be another story.

I’d recommend this to those who love a dash of mystery, a touch of suspense, interesting characters, a good storyline and an element of ‘something more to come’.

Blurb: Life in the big city wasn’t what Mackenzie “Mack” Redford expected, and now he’s come home to Hartwick County, South Dakota, to serve as sheriff.

Brantley Calderone is looking for a new life. After leaving New York and buying a ranch, he’s settling in and getting used to living at a different pace—until he finds a dead woman on his porch and himself the prime suspect in her murder.

Mack and Brantley quickly realize several things: someone is trying to frame Brantley; he is no longer safe alone on his ranch; and there’s a definite attraction developing between them, one that only increases when Mack offers to let Brantley stay in his home. But as their romance escalates, so does the killer. They’ll have to stay one step ahead and figure out who wants Brantley dead before it’s too late. Only then can they start the life they’re both seeking—together.

Purchase Link: https://www.dreamspinnerpress.com/books/flight-or-fight-by-dirk-greyson-7328-b

Review: Mack is sheriff in a small town, there aren’t any major crimes until a disturbance call comes in and Mack finds a man leaning over a dead body. Brantley is starting fresh in a small town after a scandal left his reputation in tatters in the city, he expected an easier life making a ranch for himself and getting to know his neighbors, what he didn’t expect was to return from town and discover a dead body on his porch.

When Mack clears Brantley of the murder of his realtor their attraction sparks but it soon becomes clear that someone is trying to scare Brantley off his ranch, and it’s down to Mack to protect him and discover the identity of the killer.

This is a great mystery that has a dash of suspense and romance. Mack and Brantley mesh well together, their relationship is pretty intense for the amount of time they know each other and when you add in the circumstances surrounding them it is pretty explosive at times.

It becomes clear as you read the story why the title is Flight or Fight, with the pressure that Brantley finds himself under you can see as he struggles with his instincts to flee back to the city, or to stand his ground and fight for the future he could have with Mack.

The storyline is fantastic; the mystery surrounding the murder and then the attempts to drive Brantley away from town is brilliant written. You get ideas as to who is responsible but then as more is revealed another suspect pokes their head up and you could easily miss the real suspect who isn’t revealed in clear light until right near the end, it’s beautifully executed.

I would have rated this story higher but with everything else going on I found that not much was put into developing Mack and Brantley’s relationship, just ‘them’ time as they learn more about each other and get to know each other better, a connection more personal than sexual, a deepening of feelings outside the bedroom or during the pressure intense times. But other than that this is a great story to enjoy.

I recommend this to those who love a good murder mystery, who love digging nuggets of truth out of murky waters, who adore characters that have got spark, and endings that are perfect.

Review: Jake returned from war minus a leg and with damage to his arm, he still suffers from some PTSD and his confidence has taken a blow. Returning to work at his family’s construction business has been a challenge but he’s been forging his own path by taking over admin and adapting his carpentry work. But his personal life is lacking with his confidence at an all-time low.

Alex wants a quieter way of life after the hustle and bustle of the high life as a renowned architect, he has plans to settle in the town of his childhood in the mansion his grandparents left him and his sister. With plans in place to turn the mansion into a B&B or Inn Alex is ready to relax but his cousin and his business colleague have very different plans in thought.

Jake saves Alex when he stumbles across him while checking out the mansion, Alex is drawn to Jake when he first lays eyes on him and Jake returns the regard… but Jake’s confidence takes a blow when he realizes just who Alex is. Alex works hard to convince Jake that his scars don’t matter, that Jake himself is a wonderful person who anyone would be lucky to have.

This is a really good story of two men from different worlds connecting and proving that any obstacle can be overcome. It also has a great mystery/suspense feel as Alex, Jake and the local police try to discover who is behind an attack, a murder and the mysterious movement of expensive bottles of wine.

The pace of the story is great, dropping hints and revealing information at just the right times. It doesn’t have a big reveal where you’re surprised as the story does let its secrets go quite easily. But it does keep you on your toes as the bad guys sure do know how to hide.

The relationship between Alex and Jake does have its moments of tension, but it is understandable as Jake struggles to understand what he could offer a man like Alex. Both men are fantastic, they accept their feelings for the each other without angst; it’s just Jake’s insecurities that cause’s tension between them.

I recommend this to those who love wounded warriors finding love, men who just want a slower pace in life, a dash of danger, a touch of mystery and a truly beautiful ending.

Aerin’s Review: ♥♥♥ 3 Hearts

Kasey is a mechanic who specializes in old cars, and we’re told from the beginning that Kasey has a muscle car fetish. When Brandon brings his muscle car in for a timing belt adjustment, he quickly figures out Kasey’s fetish and doesn’t hesitate to bring it up.

Here’s the thing: the whole beginning of their story seemed creepy and farfetched. How exactly did Brandon figure out that Kasey got a hard-on for his car? A regular person would assume his boner would be for Brandon himself, but I’m no expert in undercover kink so my opinion doesn’t count.

I liked Kasey and his personal issues and realizations, but this book wasn’t long enough to understand Kasey and Brandon as a couple, and that’s mostly because of how little I got to know about Brandon. For a second edition, this was seriously uneventful, unimproved, and underwhelming. I expected more the second time around, maybe an epilogue or a few more chapters where Kasey and Brandon’s relationship was showcased. The way this book ended can’t even be called a HFN.

Normal Enough had the potential to be outstanding, but unfortunately there was nothing special about it.

Pixie’s Review: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

This is a second edition and other than some minor editing the story remains the same.

Kasey has an unusual kink that he keeps hidden, but when Brandon drives into the garage Kasey works, in a 1970 Chevelle SS 454, Kasey is quickly smitten, with the driver and the car. Brandon picks up on Kasey’s kink and finds himself intrigued with the cute sexy mechanic, but trying to get the shy man to believe he is interested is hard. Kasey begins to worry over his kink and whether he will ever be able to hold Brandon’s attention; can he put aside his fear and embrace what Brandon offers?

Ah there’s nothing like a cute mechanic who has a bit of a kink for classic cars and a sexy lawyer who just happens to have a classic car collection, oh you can just imagine the steamy times ahead! Kasey is really wary of putting himself out there, in his experience it usually leads to him being embarrassed; Kasey has no confidence so when Brandon shows an interest in him he thinks it will be a quick fling. Brandon seems to have a bit of a fetish of his own, he is attracted to men with fetishes and Kasey’s fetish is one that suits Brandon perfectly. Kasey finds himself amazed that he can open up so much to Brandon but the doubt lingers and Brandon puts Kasey’s fears to rest.

This is a great sexy little number that is amazingly hot and has two great characters. We get to know Kasey really well, the character development for him was wonderful and we watched as he began to gain confidence not just with Brandon but also his workmates as well. Brandon we don’t get to know quite as well, but well enough to know he is a perfect match for Kasey.

Together they are hot and their relationship moves along smoothly, and for me the best thing was that they are still in the early stages and haven’t declared their love after such a short amount of time, it’s a beginning of a relationship that could develop into something much more solid and wonderful.

I recommend this to those who love hot men finding common ground, sparks flying, erotic hot sex, great character development and two men at the beginning of a hot sexy relationship.

Blurb: Twenty winters have passed since the Cataclysm brought down society and robbed people of their memories. Humanity, vastly reduced in numbers since the initial chaos, has started anew in Canal City with the aid of library books and steam technology. The Scout and Ranger Corps was established to search for possible survivors and to replenish dwindling resources.

Dev is the captain of the scout airship Smoke Sparrow, and Shay is the scholar of their newest expedition. Their destination is Innsmouth, Massachusetts, a small fishing town that is mentioned in obscure books but shows up on no maps. Might its secrets offer answers? But within the fog-covered, ruined hillside town by the bay lurk unspeakable dangers and horrors beyond imagining. The expedition team soon learns that Innsmouth is one town that should have been left forgotten.

Review: For twenty years humanity has tried to rebuild their world, after a Cataclysmic event that robbed them of their memories and knowledge. After relearning the basics and finding what they can still use to survive the population of the new Canal City have established the Scout and Ranger Corps, groups of people who fly out in the Skyships hoping to find other survivors and resources.

Dev is a skyship captain on the airship Smoke Sparrow heading to a small fishing town called Innsmouth, he’s taken many journeys just like this one and the scholar Shay is a young man he’s admired for some time. Shay is excited about Innsmouth and the mystery that surrounds it, it isn’t on any map and Shay wants to know why, he’s happy to be paired up with Dev again and although he does feel an attraction to Dev he’s already involved with their guard Malia.

Their visit to Innsmouth takes an abrupt turn when Malia goes missing during a scout of the town; it will take all their wits and bravery to face the horrors that lurk in the fog.

This is a brilliant post-cataclysmic horror story that bows its head to H.P. Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth, it’s beautifully written drawing us into the world where hate has been forgotten, where everyone is on equal footing and where love is love.

Dev and Shay are fantastic characters who face a horror that was best left forgotten, Malia is a brilliant character who surprises everyone with her strength and friendship. And the surprises that do crop up sure as hell do surprise you.

Dev and Shay’s budding relationship is tucked into the background as they investigate Innsmouth, the horrors they discover send a shiver down your spine… and being honest I’m unlikely to ever venture out when there’s a fog lingering.

The resourcefulness of the human race shines through as they try to build a world where they can survive, and although everyone has forgotten the past it also proves that some humans have an instinct for greed and power.

The world building is amazing and at times you can feel the damp fog sneaking up on you, the characters are given life as the story unfolds and the horror that comes to light really does send shivers down your spine. I can’t help but hope that there will be a sequel because that epilogue really has my hopes up 😉

I recommend this to those who love horror, post-apocalyptic stories, strong characters, a budding romance and an ending that leaves you intrigued.

Blurb: Cop-turned-bounty-hunter Gabe Dominguez is hired to capture firestarter Nat Wyatt. For a dragon-shifter like Gabe, apprehending Nat is easy, but transporting him involves more time, energy, and blood loss than he envisioned. An attack from a band of fairies, an out-of-control forest fire, and a showdown at an auction don’t faze Gabe, but Nat’s innocence might stop him entirely.

Since discovering his abilities, Nat’s lost a best friend, a boyfriend, and trust in his brother. Only his love of concerts and card games get him through life without a home. Rumors of the Judge, a giant dragon who once destroyed half of Canada avenging those he loved, provide Nat with hope of vindication. When Nat discovers his captor is the Judge, he thinks he’s finally caught a break. Through late-night conversations and a shared love of music, Nat tries to convince Gabe he’s not guilty.

Can Gabe continue his cutthroat lifestyle, or will he run away with his dragon hoard like he’s always longed to do? Can Nat escape his legacy, or will his be another spark snuffed out by people who don’t understand? The Oracle, the most powerful wizard in Canada, might be the only one who can provide answers.

Review: Bounty Hunter Gabe is a dragon shifter, when he’s given a new bounty to hunt when he’s having a rare night to himself he’s just a touch miffed, discovering the guy he’s just picked up is his bounty makes him grind his teeth, seeing said bounty driving off on his bike has steam coming out of his ears but it’s nothing compared to the journey he’s about to take as he drags his bounty across the country.

Nat is a firestarter who just wants to get on with his life, but with yet another bounty out on his head he knows it will be near impossible to escape his brother again. Discovering his hunter is the Judge has him grasping at the slim hope of someone believing the truth, but getting Gabe to see the truth is freaking hard. During the journey to the meeting point Nat and Gabe share a love of music and Gabe begins to accept that not everything he has been told about Nat is the truth, but can he let go of his duty as a bounty hunter to try and help Nat.

This is a great urban fantasy story that has a paranormal world that is like nothing we are used to. Gabe shut himself off from the world after that death of his lover, turning to bounty hunting to survive he’s earned the name of the Judge but when he’s sent to pick up Nat it has him questioning what he is doing and what he truly wants. Nat is stuck; his brother wants him for his firestarting powers and just won’t let him go, he tries to keep under the radar but with his brother setting him up for arson and murder he just can’t keep moving fast enough.

When these two men meet it truly is a moment of sparks flying between them, their attraction to each other is instant but they end up at odds when Gabe takes a bounty that Nat has on his head. This really is a fantastic story that has many moments of near misses and digging for the truth. The paranormal aspects are brilliant with the world being a place where paranormals are accepted with laws in place to govern them.

The actually storyline is fascinating as we are dragged deeper into Gabe and Nat’s world, startling revelations become clear with Gabe left feeling betrayed. We meet several characters who add a great deal to the storyline and make this story just a little bit more special, but Nat and Gabe are the stars of this show, especially when they face down the Oracle!

I recommend this to those who love real world paranormals, fantastic urban fantasy stories, accepting the truth an doing the right thing and a love that blooms during the harshest of times.

Review: When Maine and Colby’s plane crashes in the Cascade Mountains their true feelings for each other slip the tight leash that both men have held for two years, their passion ignites but it takes another near death experience for Maine to see the truth of his future.

This is a lovely story of accepting love and forging your own path. Colby has been working for Maine for two years and somewhere along the way he fell in love with his boss, he’s always kept a very tight leash on his feelings though because Maine is straight and set to be married. But Colby discovers that Maine isn’t as straight as he thought when their plane crashes.

Maine has always been gay but he lives the life other people expect of him, he’s slightly insecure in his abilities but is determined to push forward being the best man he can be. Crashing and near death experiences has him re-evaluating his own needs and acting on his feelings for Colby.

I really enjoyed this story as it has that great Mills & Boon/Harlequin smoochy feels, with just a dash of angst that is quickly resolved. The entire story is played out over about four days so it does move pretty quickly along, once Maine and Colby admit their feelings it’s pretty much full throttle for both men. We have a pretty fleshed out story and there’s some great daydream scenes from both Colby and Maine that show what they both long for.

There are moments of tension as Colby has to put his faith in Maine as Maine meets his fiancé to admit the truth to her, and again later when Maine confronts the board. I do admit to wishing we could have seen a scene where Maine told his parents as it did seem strange that he never told them before he told the board. There is a great undertone to the story of nasty dealings but even that is quickly resolved, but you do have to suspend disbelief of getting the preliminary report back for the crash so quickly.

Vivien Dean and Rick R. Reed work fantastically together in this joint venture and I hope that they will pair up again in the future.

Overall this is a great read for those who love Mills & Boon or Harlequin romances, for those who love a touch of tension, underhand dealings and true love winning out.

Lisa’s Review: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 Hearts

This is the first story by this author that I have read and I must say I am ecstatic about it. Although I have to tell you that I was thinking sexy man in a uniform, hot sex and so forth. That is not what this story is about; there is romance to it, but more action, suspense and danger then anything.

Simon Monk is ex-army, ex-delta force who was drummed out when his lover turned out to be a traitor to their country. He had finished five tours in Afghanistan and ended up working for the CIA in a way. He was sent to kill those who posed a danger to others. He is extremely lethal and hard to kill.

This story is an action packed one with espionage, assassinations and deadly men. Egypt is not known for allowing gays so when a known married couple are assassinated, it is time for Simon to step in. He is ordered to lead the investigation. However, in what would seem like a case of homophobic hate, the situation has turned into something more dangerous. Someone wants to take over Egypt and it is up to Simon and Ben to stop them.

If you like dangerous situations, espionage, politics, foreign relationship, traitors, spies and so forth then this is the book for you. This story turned out to be quite extensive in how long the author had to do research. The plot is so damn twisted and complex, but it works for this particular story. The details were fully developed and so damn well designed that it was jaw dropping. The pace is a little off to me though.

I had trouble concentrating on the story because it was a slow building story. If you’re looking for hot sex then you might want to read another story because this is more about the action, suspense, danger and assassinations. Although the author seemed to be really into details because I thought some of it was just not needed. It took away from the story itself for me. Also the fact that women were in it, not as sexual characters but as military and so forth was a bit strange to me, I just could not see the bad guys having a female assassin or spy or infiltrator or whatever she was.

I understand that this is a series, but I am afraid that as well written that this story is, it was not for me. If you are into military and war stories though, this will be for you, but it is not really a romance story.

Pixie’s Review: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 Hearts

I agree with a lot of Lisa’s review, this story is action pack, with a lot of dangerous situations, espionage, political minefields, foreign relationship, traitors and spies. The story flows smoothly and it’s pretty fast paced for the type of storyline.

The story is really all about Simon Monk; nearly everything that happens happens around him with a couple of scenes with other characters highlighted to move the storyline along. Monk’s love interest is a man called Ben Namajunas, Special Forces, who is called in to help Monk with his mission. Ben and Monk have a long history and this time around Ben longs for something more from Monk rather than brief sexy times together.

Whereas Lisa finds it strange that women are used as strong key characters whatever their role, I found it to be quite refreshing that women were fit into roles that many authors would have left to men. The only thing that irked me was that the women were all stunningly beautiful; I’d have liked it if at least one of them was a ‘plain Jane’.

The storyline is strong; it keeps you gripped as it drags you along after Monk, dodging bodies, bombs, gunfire and traitors. The relationship between Monk and Ben was low key throughout the story, hanging around in the background with just a hint every now and again to keep the interest piqued. I loved the way the story was built; layers were added with every chapter until you had a full picture of Monk and what his life entails. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.

I recommend this to those who love mystery and suspense laced with action and danger, who adore in depth characters, who love a solid storyline that is laced with just a bit of budding relationships.

Blurb: Kaden Pace, a soldier injured while on a mission, hides the extent of his damage by wearing his high-tech armor, desperate to prove his worth to his administrators and make himself useful in order to hold on to his independence. But during a simple assignment to escort two cadets across the country to retrieve the armor of a dead warrior, things start to fall apart.

They meet Shun, a young man with a secret, who steals the armor they were supposed to recover. Chasing Shun brings them to an abandoned town, where they encounter even more trouble. Stranded in the deserted city, Kaden finds himself relying more and more on Shun, the person he’d come to capture, while fighting off an invasion from the neighboring country.

But even when he returns to camp, Kaden’s problems are not over. Now he has to find a way to save Shun, whom he’s growing to care for, and keep his team alive as they make one last-ditch attempt to get back the armor Shun stole. Armor that is now in enemy hands, on an island in the middle of the sea, at Ground Zero where it all began.

Review: Kaden was orphaned by war, joining the army was for the security of three meals a day, as rumors fly that the Army was going to send anyone who was not ready to join the armored unit back to the orphanages for another three years has Kaden trying out for the armored unit. Injured while on a mission Kaden is now desperate to prove that he is still an asset before anyone realizes the extent of his injuries. Sent on a simple mission to oversee two cadets (Wayland and Bradley) retrieving the armor of a dead warrior, things begin to go wrong.

Shun has one mission in mind, destroy the armor of the man who hurt his mother. Meeting up with three armored warriors gives Shun the perfect opportunity to exact his revenge… but things go drastically wrong when he confides in a friend.

Kaden is a fantastic character; he has a strength of will that just jumps off the page. Shun is a little harder to get a grip on as a character as the story is from Kaden’s perspective, but he seems to be a great man who is a little naïve and a little too trusting with those he calls friends.

Their relationship gets off to a rocky start… what with Shun nicking the armor that Kaden was trying to retrieve! But they quickly start to semi trust each other when they have to work together to get it back from the man who stole all the armor units when Shun is betrayed. Their trust builds quickly though and their physical reaction to each other helps a lot with that, and their relationship does move quickly although it isn’t an easy one.

Wayland and Bradley (the cadets) also play a large part in this story; they have their own problems with each other due to sibling rivalry, both girls trying to prove themselves so it’s gets a little sticky at times as their resentment spills over.

The storyline is amazing, we have fantastic armor that is so much more than any of them realize, then we have the danger that seems to lurk everywhere, there’s loads of action as they try to get the armor back and then we also have a huge great doozy of a surprise that just comes out of nowhere and leaves you gobsmacked as the ramifications hit you.

This is a well-crafted story that shows us the strengths of the characters as well as their weaknesses, it shows a love that begins to blossom in really hard times, it throws you into settings that come alive around you and it reveals treachery from unexpected quarters.

I recommend this story to those who love science fiction that is laced with mystery and suspense, who adore characters who will overcome any obstacles to prove their worth, who love difficult love stories, and an ending that is just the beginning.
