Blurb: The only thing in Colin Mulligan’s life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he’s gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Rafael Guerrera has found ways to live with the past he’s ashamed of. He’s dedicated his life to social justice work and to helping youth who, like him, had very little growing up. He has no time for love. Hell, he barely has time for himself. Somehow, everything about miserable, self-destructive Colin cries out to him. But down that path lie the troubles Rafe has worked so hard to leave behind. And as their relationship intensifies, Rafe and Colin are forced to dredge up secrets that both men would prefer stay buried.

Review: As soon as I finished listening to the first book in this series, Middle of Somewhere, I quickly found myself pressing play on the audio for Middle of Nowhere. Now, I have to admit after reading about the third book in the series that I have some reservations on that one, but that isn’t relevant here. The point is after reading book 1 I knew that I needed to devour this book. Through Daniel Mulligan and Rex Vale’s story, it became clear that the next story was going to be about Daniel’s combative and misunderstood older brother, Colin Mulligan.

The story follows Colin’s life from about the same place in time where Daniel’s story started. We first met Colin as a complete asshole who seemed beyond redemption. But if you’re a sucker for these types of stories – another type of story I can’t help to love – this sequel is another sure thing for you to listen to or read. I also happen to think that Spencer Goss absolutely captures Colin’s tone perfectly.

Seriously, Roan Parrish is just filling these books with literary tropes that I just love!

Colin in nothing short of a broken man – he puts on an act in front of his family, even though that is broken too. The events that occur later in the book with his younger brothers cement that fact. He has hidden his true self from the world for the sake of his father and that has left his life in utter ruins. Colin Mulligan is the broken asshole you love to fall in love with and see him through his redemption.

His chance at redemption doesn’t come until he meets Rafael Guerrarra. Rafe has been through his own shitty times in life but he has come out the other side a better man for it. Colin’s self-destructive tendencies first draw him in. Later, it’s clear that Rafe’s need to care for people is what propels the start of their unsteady relationship. By the end of the book, not only has Colin worked through his shit, he is also presented with a chance to do something for someone else for a change, after all the damage he has inflicted in the past.

This is so much more than a story of romance and redemption. I simply loved this one and absolutely fell in love with both of the main characters.

Blurb: Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in – not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel’s relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he’s a city boy through and through, and it’s clear that this small town is one more place he won’t fit in.

Rex Vale clings to routine to keep loneliness at bay: honing his muscular body, perfecting his recipes, and making custom furniture. Rex has lived in Holiday for years, but his shyness and imposing size have kept him from connecting with people.

When the two men meet, their chemistry is explosive, but Rex fears Daniel will be another in a long line of people to leave him, and Daniel has learned that letting anyone in can be a fatal weakness. Just as they begin to break down the walls keeping them apart, Daniel is called home to Philadelphia, where he discovers a secret that changes the way he understands everything.

Review: This is the first time that I’ve experienced Roan Parrish’s writing – in audio or in text, starting the Middle of Somewhere series was really a big step for me. However, I have to say that the blurb took me in – I’m a sucker for the secret tough guy who is also the black sheep of the family. And that is exactly the type of story you are getting here, so if you’re like me and that’s your thing, I say give it a whirl and you will probably be pleasantly surprised.

The story follows Daniel. He is the black sheep of his family. He has been ridiculed by his brothers and father since he was a child – since the untimely death of his mother. At one point as a child his one haven was his big brother Colin but he even lost that – it’s a story line that I loved in the book and was so happy that it was picked up further in the sequel.

Daniel just never fit in, especially once he came out as a teen to his super-macho father and brothers and even more so when he decided that he wanted to go to school instead of becoming a mechanic. It seemed his decision was simple when he decided to pack up his life in Philly so that he could move to the remote town of Holiday to become a college professor. I really connected with Daniel’s woes over his career purely because it was so realistic and I am in the exact same position he is in the book in my real life. Honestly, I didn’t know whether I should laugh or cry.

In Holiday, Daniel meets Rex. Rex is a gentle giant who is painfully introverted. It was the introverted part of his character which I found I was able to come completely connect with. The fact that I connected with both MCs, which of course cannot always happen, was what kept me going with the audio. It was just so easy to get into, though there were times I thought that the pace needed to speed up a bit, but it was nothing that overly bothered me at the time.

Even the narration by Robert Nieman was a first time for me. I have quickly come to have my list of my favorite narrators and Robert Nieman has definitely made the list. He pulls off Daniel’s narration wonderfully (the books was basically all in Daniel’s POV). He pumps the words with emotion, even to the point that I may have shed a tear or two.

Blurb: A fairy-tale vacation—if he can get the ending right.

American nurse Finch Mason steps beyond the comfort of his orderly life and takes a dream trip to England, complete with a National Trust Pass so he can visit numerous historical sites. At the first one on his list, he’s warmly welcomed—and told he bought a pass good for two.

Finch doesn’t hesitate to offer the pass to Benedict, a handsome Brit also there on an outing. They spend a magical week touring the countryside, and while it’s too soon to get attached, Finch wishes their time together would never end.

Then Finch finds himself stuck abroad with no money, and he has no one to turn to but Benedict. Benedict is happy to help, but he also owes Finch some answers—such as who he really is and why he was at the estate where they first met.

Review: I’m racking my brain to figure out if I’ve read anything by Elle Brownlee before. Suffice to say I still can’t remember and so I went into this one with a completely open mind. The only thing I was expecting was the OTT drama and romance – though for some stories it is more difficult to suspend your disbelief than others – is what I’ve come to expect with the Dreamspun Desires series.

Sweet guy with a tragic past, Finch, is on his dream holiday of a life time in England. A mix up in ticketing leaves him with a double pass for one week instead of one pass for two weeks. Handsome Englishman, Benedict, happens to be at the National Trust Site Finch is visiting when he finds out this information and Finch happily invites Benedict to take on the second pass. However, this being a romance fiction, it is all too obvious that there is more to Benedict than meets the eye. After the week finishes Finch feels he is ready to part ways, though there is a definite spark between the guys. But when all his belongings are stolen, Finch has no one but Benedict to turn to – which is where he learns the truth.

OK, I really did enjoy reading this book, I truly did, but I didn’t fully connect with the characters. I think the one thing that irritated me and took away my enjoyment was that I was trying to figure out who leaves their valuables in a hostel – why not keep them on you? Seriously, that was one thing that I couldn’t suspend my disbelief for. There isn’t a lot of hot and heavy romance (in fact there was no sex), which I would expect from a love at first sight sort of trope, but it was nice to see the guys get to know each other for a week before getting all angsty. For this reason I think that while there was a connection between Benedict and Finch, it wasn’t really strong and needed more development.

If you’re into sweet, old fashioned and very English types of stories, this might be your type thing. For those that hate insta-love (and I know there are lots of you), you’d probably do best to stay away from this one, particularly since there is no actual sex going on as well (I personally find insta-tolerable in even the worst cases if there is hot sex).

Dr. Mikhail “Misha” Budnikov takes one look at fellow fencer Ryan O’Connor and instantly knows his type. The undisciplined hothead is all ego with no finesse and even less control. In short, Misha’s pet peeves personified. To put the arrogant kid in check, Misha challenges him to a sparring match, which he predictably wins.

Not so predictably, Ryan asks him to be a mentor and show him how to fence. Startled by the moment of humility, Misha agrees.

What begins as fencing lessons becomes something much hotter, and before they know it, Misha is giving Ryan an entirely different kind of education. Dominance, submission, pain, pleasure—at the hands of an older, experienced man, a whole new world is opening up for Ryan.

As the trust deepens and their bond strengthens, though, Ryan retreats because that sham called love left him jaded long ago. Cynical beyond his years, he’s not letting his guard down, least of all for a thrice-divorced man twice his age.

Now Misha has to find a way to crack through those defenses…or accept defeat and walk away from the submissive who might just be the love of his life.

Nothing can stop true love. Not time. Not even the devil himself.

1805. Laurent. Indentured servant. Desperate to escape a life that is falling apart.

2017. Beast. Kings of Hell Motorcycle Club vice president. His fists do the talking.

Beast has been disfigured in a fire, but he’s covered his skin with tattoos to make sure no one mistakes his scars for weakness. The accident not only hurt his body, but damaged his soul and self-esteem, so he’s wrapped himself in a tight cocoon of violence and mayhem where no one can reach him.

Until one night, when he finds a young man covered in blood in their clubhouse. Sweet, innocent, and as beautiful as an angel fallen from heaven, Laurent pulls on all of Beast’s heartstrings. Laurent is so lost in the world around him, and is such a tangled mystery, that Beast can’t help but let the man claw his way into the stone that is Beast’s heart.

In 1805, Laurent has no family, no means, and his eyesight is failing. To escape a life of poverty, he uses his beauty, but that only backfires and leads him to a catastrophe that changes his life forever. He takes one step into the abyss and is transported to the future, ready to fight for a life worth living.

What he doesn’t expect in his way is a brutal, gruff wall of tattooed muscle with a tender side that only Laurent is allowed to touch. And yet, if Laurent ever wants to earn his freedom, he might have to tear out the heart of the very man who took care of him when it mattered most.

Reviewer: Prime

Review: I’ve read about half of the Dreamspun Desires series, and now I get to hear them to! Finding Family is actually one of the books that I just haven’t got around to reading yet. For me these relatively short novellas cover a guilty desire of sweet romance – to me I liken Dreamspun Desires to the MM version of Harlequin romances. I suppose, in that sense, I can say many of the books have a predictable plot but for me that in no way takes away from the story.

I love Connie Bailey – her writing is so easy to follow and everything, in the end, comes together for a wonderful ending. As I said of the Dreamspun Desires series in general, the ending of Finding Family culminates to an incredibly sweet ending, even if it’s predictable. Okay, so there is a bit of adventure and a pretty serious corporate trouble – but between all that is two strong male leads and three great kids bursting with personality.

On top of all this enjoyment for is that fact that John Solo narrates this particular story. Seriously, I’m in love with his voice. (It’s kind of like the episode of the TV show The IT Crowd where the female lead is in love with the voice of a radio announcer. So not the point, I’m moving on.) I think I’m going to be saying this every time I review a book he narrates – John Solo absolutely nails the characters feelings and in particular for the leads, he really injects a lot of life and personality into the words he is reading off the page.

As for the story itself, everything is there in the blurb. Jonathan Lamb, aka Jon, grew up in a children’s home and raised by nuns (how Sound of Music is that?). He’s twenty and after being constantly sick as a child and then working at the children’s home, it’s time for him to get out on his own. To that end he becomes the manny for Charles Macquarrie. Charles is from a multi-millionaire family, but with a very tragic past. At twenty five he has lost his parents, runs the family corporation (despite events he does it well too) and now guardian to three much younger cousins after the death of his uncle and aunty. As I keep saying, it’s a recipe for sweetness, bordering on a diabetic coma.

There are what I feel to be a few call backs to The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, aside from the obviously stated ones. It tends to give Jon an around perfect feel, while it is Charles who is flawed, even though he is a young, rich and hot businessman/millionaire. I think it’s a bit of a change from the usual trope. If I must pick at anything, I feel that a lot more could have been made of Charles’ drinking, Jon’s reaction and the implications that alcohol seems to be a genetic problem in the Macquarrie family.

The Summer King has come to the Wode…

Yet to which oath, head or heart, shall he hold?

Once known as the Templar assassin Guy de Gisbourne, dispossessed noble Gamelyn Boundys has come to Sherwood Forest with conflicted oaths. One is of duty: demanding he tame the forest’s druidic secrets and bring them back to his Templar Masters. The other oath is of heat and heart: given to the outlaw Robyn Hood, avatar of the Horned Lord, and the Maiden Marion, embodiment of the Lady Huntress. The three of them—Summerlord, Winter King, and Maiden of the Spring—are bound by yet another promise, that of fate: to wield the covenant of the Shire Wode and the power of the Ceugant, the magical trine of all worlds. In this last, also, is Gamelyn conflicted; spectres of sacrifice and death haunt him.

Uneasy oaths begin a collision course when not only Gamelyn, but Robyn and Marion are summoned to the siege of Nottingham by the Queen. Her promise is that Gamelyn will regain his noble family’s honour of Tickhill, and the outlaws of the Shire Wode will have a royal pardon.

But King Richard has returned to England, and the price of his mercy might well be more than any of them can afford…

I buried my twin sister six months after she found out she had cancer. Her funeral was three months ago. Today is our birthday and it started with delivery of letters from her.

It seems she didn’t trust me to move on after her death. She knows me too well. But how can I go on when my other half is just…gone? That’s not something I can recover from with a snap of my fingers. But I also can’t ignore her instructions even though I’d be perfectly content to cuddle up with my buddy, Johnnie Walker, and call it a year.

She has a list of things for me to do and there are rules attached.

There’s one major problem besides the fact it’s been three months since I left the house. I have to do all these things with her jerk of an ex, Hawk Simmons. He abandoned her shortly after she found out she was sick. If that wasn’t enough to make this a really bad idea, the fact that he makes an appearance in all my nighttime fantasies probably does.

I don’t think I can do this, but I owe it to my sister’s memory to try.

This is a stand-alone male/male contemporary romance novel.

The heart’s a resilient beast…

Professionally, the FBI team of Aidan “Irish” Talley and Jameson “Whiskey” Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story. Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.

Going undercover on a new case gets them out of town and off the killer’s radar. Max Tremblay should be happy. His nightclub, Frantic, is one of the most popular gay clubs in Toronto, and his childhood refuge, Ringside Gym, is well on the way to reopening. But when he finds yet another drunk in the alley beside the bar, Max isn’t sure this is the life he truly wants.

Grady Barnes has it all. He’s rich, famous, and wants for nothing. Well, nothing but a good relationship with his father. When he discovers that his father is going to force him into an arranged marriage, Grady has had enough. He tracks down Max, the man who got him to safety after a night of overindulgence, and makes him a proposal: pretend to be his fiancé for two weeks and he’ll invest in Ringside Gym.

When the pair travel to Vancouver to attend a family wedding, the flames of their mutual attraction ignite, and they discover that the only difference between pretend and reality is how well they can fake it.

Two plus one equals scorching hot fun.

Dumped by his boyfriend and reduced to living in a grotty bedsit, Josh Carpenter lives for his job as a glassblower. That and occasional glimpses of his sexy downstairs neighbours, Rai Nakamura and Evan Truman.

Whenever he overhears the diminutive academic and the hunky plumber having loud and obviously kinky sex, Josh is whipped into a state of frenzied lust… and a longing for a relationship like theirs.

To his amazement, Rai and Evan find his embarrassing tendency to blush utterly charming, and the three men grow closer over the course of the long, hot summer. Despite enjoying Rai’s charming flirtation and Evan’s smouldering gaze, Josh is determined never to do anything to split them apart.

However, when a naked Josh falls—quite literally—into the middle of one of Rai and Evan’s marathon sex sessions, the force of their mutual attraction takes over. But just as Josh dares to hope, he senses a change. If the three of them can’t renegotiate the rules of their new relationship, Josh risks losing their friendship—and any chance at love—forever.

Warning: Contains one well-endowed stud with a sexy accent, one improbably toppy bottom boy with an unfortunate owl obsession, and one blushing naïf who can’t believe his luck. Also, the occasional indulgence in mathematical spanking and some shameless armpit sex.

Bonus Christmas Hot Floor short story included in this edition!

The Queen and the Homo Jock King by T.J. Klune

Blurb: Do you believe in love at first sight?

Sanford Stewart sure doesn’t. In fact, he pretty much believes in the exact opposite, thanks to the Homo Jock King. It seems Darren Mayne lives for nothing more than to create chaos in Sandy’s perfectly ordered life, just for the hell of it. Sandy despises him, and nothing will ever change his mind.

Or so he tells himself.

It’s not until the owner of Jack It – the club where Sandy performs as drag queen Helena Handbasket – comes to him with a desperate proposition that Sandy realizes he might have to put his feelings about Darren aside. Because Jack It will close unless someone can convince Andrew Taylor, the mayor of Tucson, to keep it open.

Someone like Darren, the mayor’s illegitimate son.

The foolproof plan is this: seduce Darren, and push him to convince his father to renew Jack It’s contract with the city.

Simple, right?

Wrong.

Review: If there is something better than reading a TJ Klune novel, it would have to be listening to a TJ Klune audiobook. The Queen and the Homo Jock King is the sequel (and if you follow TJ on Facebook you will know that there are another 2 stories to go with this series). For fans of TJ Klune, I don’t need to gush about how awesome and uproariously hilarious this is (and no trademark Wookie cry face) – that is for those who have not read the book before.

The Queen and the Homo Jock Queen shifts to the story of a different couple from Tell Me It’s Real (the name of book 1 and the series), although Paul and Vince feature heavily throughout the plot as this centres on the romance between Vince’s half-brother, Darren, and Paul’s best friend, Sandy, a.k.a. the drag queen Helena Handbasket.  Sandy and Darren are about as crazy and just as hilarious as their friend/brother. Their attraction is palpable through the audio. Their story is a series of misunderstandings and well meaning friends, which means that this seems anything but normal.

I have to say, that Michael Lesley did an absolutely wonderful job narrating the book. He captured Helena’s and Sandy’s persona wonderfully, along with the other characters – I personally love his voice for Vince, Darren, Charlie and Paul. Also, another Easter egg for TJ’s fans – when Paul starts babbling about sending Sandy away, he mentions that Sandy should use the name Gustavo Tiberius. Paul also says that anyone called Gustavo Tiberius would be totally kick ass. For fans of How to be a Normal Person, we all know that why Gustavo is a totally kickass person it definitely is not in the same way that Paul had been thinking.
