In This Iron Ground

(Natural Magic 01)
by

Marina Vivancos

Damien is nine years old when his parents die. He goes into foster care, seven jumps and seven houses and seven families by the time he’s thirteen. He learns what words like ‘exhausting’ and ‘I can’t do this anymore’ really mean.

Then, he’s taken in by the McKenzies.

The McKenzies can see there’s something wrong with him. They try to fix him, but Damien isn’t sure if it’s making him better. All he knows is that he feels worse.

People say that that the moon has a call that even people can feel. In the wash of their blood and tide of their soul, they can hear it calling. Maybe that’s what makes Damien run through the forest on a full moon night, trying to escape what awaits him at the McKenzies. He wants to lose himself in the green and the silver, disappear into the black. Instead, he’s found.

The Salgado family have been part of the town for as long as anybody can remember. Their Native American roots are anchored deep into the ground, and Damien has seen the Salgado children in his school. Koko, who is in his class, and Hakan, two years older and infinitely unreachable. Damien is too much of a loser to ever have anything to do with either of them, until that full moon night reveals that the Salgados are not only a family. They are a pack.

Damien is suddenly introduced into a world that had only ever existed in his imagination, where there is magic in the forest and the moon, in the earth under his feet. He meets creatures that look like monsters, but Damien knows what monsters look like. They have the same face as anybody else.

The Salgados welcome Damien in a way he never would have expected. Damien and Hakan grow closer, first into friendship, and then into something heated and breathless as they end up in the same university together. But, Damien knows, deep down in that bruised and mealy part of his core, that he’s not good enough to be part of their family. He’s not worthy of calling Hakan his home.

Damien is used to losing things, but he’ll hold onto this for as long as he can.

CONTENT WARNING: This book contains themes of (non-sexual, mostly emotional) child abuse and the subsequent emotional, cognitive and behavioural impact on said child. However, at its core, this book is about recovery through found family and love.

This story contains several sexually explicit scenes between consenting adults and therefore is meant for an adult audience.

Review: If you’ve read any of my previous reviews for Andrew Grey books – audio or written – you will know that Andrew Grey is one of my absolute favorite authors. In fact, Andrew Grey is only one of a couple authors who I automatically want to read/listen to anything he writes. I love his characters and his plots – you don’t need to suspend your disbelief for very long and his characters are so damn relatable it’s impossible not laugh or cry at some point in the story.

That’s one reason why I knew that I would love this book, for those of you who are suckers for books with firefighters and disabled heroes (because not all heroes are able and not all heroes wear capes. These guys are always stronger than they think they are and they are always a proper HEA with their own prince charming), this is also the book for you.

I looked forward to the voice that Michael Pauley would lend to the characters as he is a relatively unknown narrator for me. He was absolutely brilliant. Having previously read and loved this book I kinda had an idea what I wanted the characters to sound like, and although Pauley’s interpretation was a little different to what I expected the heart and soul was there and it was perfectly sweet.

The story follows firefighter, Morgan, and disabled ex-marine Richard. After saving Richard from a fire, Morgan realizes that the man is in fact the best friend from his childhood he had been upset about not seeing again when his father made them move to another city. But now the guys are back together and Richard is the center of a series of arson attacks. Morgan is ready to be his friend’s knight in shining armor, and now that they are men he is ready to take their friendship to a whole new level.

For fans of Andrew Grey, you will more than certainly recognize a few minor characters Morgan and Richard run into as couples from other books/series. I love little fan Easter eggs like that. The plot is probably predictable but the pace is pleasing, the characters are totally relatable and generally just pure joy to read.

The Best Worst Honeymoon by Andrew Grey

In a bid for distraction, his best friend, Grayson Phillips, suggests he takes advantage of the luxury honeymoon anyway! Beautiful Bonaire lends itself to romance, and along with close quarters, relaxing on the water, and a matchmaking kid, Tommy and Grayson soon find themselves closer than ever… and considering more, much to Grayson’s delight. But before they can plan the best best honeymoon ever, dark clouds descend in the form of Tommy’s ex and a sting from paradise that could ruin everything.

Review: Andrew Grey is one of my all-time favorite authors and while The Best Worst Honeymoon Ever is not up there with my favorite books, it is a fun book. For me Andrew Grey + Romance + Cute Kid = Awesome book. And what’s more, for me, I love the fact that the kid in this story is nuts about Star Wars – clearly, I’m easy to please at times.

Everything you need to know is in the blurb so I’ll try not to be too repetitive or let go any spoilers. The story is quite simple really, but as I previously mentioned, the execution meant that this was a thoroughly enjoyable. The book itself is also well paced with solid character development.

The book opens with Tommy Gordon nervous for his wedding, but is bolstered by the presence of his best man and best friend, Grayson Philips, and Grayson’s incorrigible son, Petey. And within moments Tommy’s world is crashing down around him. Luckily for him, Tommy has some wonderful people to help him, least of which is his bestie Grayson with Petey right behind. When Tommy plans to cancel his tropical honeymoon (which he hadn’t really wanted as much as he had wanted to go to Paris), Grayson convinces Tommy to go and have fun. Which leads to Grayson and Petey tagging along.

This is a fun and sexy story that turns friends to lovers, which has the family friendly element with the addition of the precocious Petey, who is more than happy for his dad to get with Uncle Tommy so that he can keep Uncle Tommy for real. Seriously, cute and sneaky kid. Petey also is a highlight when Tommy gathers the courage to properly face his ex that the three of can have a chance to become a family.

For fans of Andrew Grey and the Dreamspinner Press house line, Dreamspun Desire this is one to add to your list as, at least for me, it is everything that I expect from both.

Review: This story was previously published in the “Love for All Seasons” charity anthology.

Justin kissed Luke then pretty much ignored him the rest of the time. Now it was close to the end of college life and Justin wants him. Now all he has to do is to fix his past mistake.

It is a cute little love story and was perfect for when you need a break. To me however it was leaving out some of the good parts and I could tell. I have never really been a fan of short stories for that reason. I am afraid that I just didn’t connect with the guys or their story though.

Blurb: Duke Webb has run the most successful bail recovery agency in Atlanta for over twenty years. That’s because he has a team of trained, competent hunters backing him up to keep his name feared on the streets. But Duke knows that nothing can go on forever. His hunters are in committed relationships and ready to settle down, and so is he. That’s what leads him to start his new training program.

“That’s the new vision for Dukes. Veterans operating and tracking behind the scenes with a new powerhouse apprehension team on the streets.”

Brian and Quick are the first to offer up two new recruits.

Kellam Knight has studied martial arts under his sensei, Quick, since he was eight years old. A tossed-out reject from high-society, Kell has a problem fighting on the right side of the law. If he sees an injustice, he has to correct it. He doesn’t have to run and cower from his enemies anymore, he’s a fighter who can protect himself and others. When Quick offers Kell the opportunity to join Duke’s training program, he’s all in. When Brian King – his father’s most trusted comrade – finally comes to him with the truth, he doesn’t come alone. He comes with trained men hidden in the shadows… and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join a brotherhood unlike any other.

ISBN: B07GWMHKT7

Product Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: Kellam has been raised by a strict hand I guess one would say. His father is a politician who basically is an ass and only thinks of himself. Kellam had been sent to the best schools but he was missing what most children have, love. He had seen violence from not only a father but many others around him. Growing up he was small and cute, but now one would definitely not recognize him. He was a master in four different types of martial arts but he never got his anger in check. He was an avenging angel to many but it could have cost him so much more. His sensi wanted him to work for those he works for. Being a bounty hunter does sound fun but also very dangerous. He was small and many would think the opposite of what he can do. His new partner had that look but damn if his mind is not about to be get changed.

Ty loved his family something fierce. His father had died in service and he didn’t even have a clue how. He took care of his mother and loved her very much. His father didn’t raise him like many young american boys were. He was taught to respect and to give his loyalty. When his fathers best friend and teammate showed up, he had not expected what would happen next.

Two young men whose future was about to change. This story was very long and drawn out so much so that it lost my attention a couple of times. It came off monotone in parts that would have put me to sleep on a good day. There is chemistry between the two but it also felt stilted. I was hoping for a bit more action than what was given. Although I do understand it is a new beginning for the characters, it just felt off. It didn’t give me anything to dance around about. My attention was not caught from the beginning and to me that is never a good sign.

They fell in love to fast and then to get married was not working for me. I did not get the sense of heat and passion from them to fall that fast. I even hate to admit that in the beginning when you first come across them, I didn’t care for either. They came off wrong in most accounts. It doesn’t come off as remarkable or even remotely one that would be remembered in the future.

The guys were written very well and their descriptions were a hit. You have two young men who come off as a badass but they both hold different religious beliefs but they don’t push it on each other. Now that being said I don’t care for a story that even mentions religion so it went down in ranks for me. The guys were well placed with each other as partners, although you see more of Kellam’s force then you see Ty’s.

The slow burn to the story and even the love making was dull and boring to me. I am afraid that even though it has great potential it didn’t sit right with me. I hate to admit that I don’t remember the previous books but if this is to be a new group of bounty hunters it should have been given a different series name.

But no plan of Gael’s has ever gone smoothly, and his new start on Alkirak is no exception. Things go wrong from the moment he steps off the shuttle.

Review: Gael is a man desperate and at the end of his rope. Living in a city under the ground he has never seen the sun or anything above ground. On top of that he is indenture to the Trass family for debts he and his brother accumulated. Sent on a mission to take out a target with a rifle he fails to make the killing shot. Scared he runs to his friend Price for help to get off the planet as far as he can get.

Abraham puts a companion request on a site and he wants someone long term. He’s lonely. As an ex miner turned farmer his life takes on the same routine everyday on a planet where the sun is deadly so he lives in the crevasses. He’s made a good life and now seeks companionship. When he sees Gael’s profile he knows he’s the one and sends a message.

But not all is as it seems. trouble is following Gael and will intrude. Not to mention the harsh living on a planet where one mistake can mean death. Unforgiving storms, deadly poisonous mists plus people looking for a way to advance or make someone pay. I loved this story. It was not just about the relationship between these two men and the little girl who follows Gael. There is so much more to it. I found it to be quite entertaining and at several times edge of your seat worthy.

Fantastic read.

Blurb: Three men, one love—and a passion he only ever dreamed of.

Karel Novak is content with his busy job in hotel refurbishment, enjoying the social scene in Soho, London and the company of new friends he met through working at With A Kick. All he’s missing is a special man in his life. Or maybe two.

His first meeting with the mercurial pole dancer Leroy and his socially anxious partner Griff isn’t impressive, but none of them can ignore the sexual spark that flares between the three men.

Their relationship builds in steps of passion, frustration, and finally love. Both Leroy and Griff have complex issues in their lives to work through, and at first Karel brings a new dynamic that both settles and supports them.

But although he loves his men, Karel gradually realises the issues are still present. His partners struggle with living individually as well as together. His heartfelt wish is for them to create a lasting bond as a trio—but that means putting others first, all too often.
And will that mean sacrificing his own joy and dreams?

Review: Karel is not looking for a relationship but damn if he doesn’t get one. Not with one man but two. One night of hot sex and well you get the idea. And what an idea it is. He just has the normal will I fit into a already made relationship. I have only came across one book in the large amount that I have that make the threesome work. One that makes it seem that they each need the other. The heart, the soul and the glue that keeps them together is a bit what you get.

I have read a several books with threesomes in them and only a handfull actually make the story enjoyable. This story didn’t catch my attention like it should have, in fact after the first page I was ready to give it up. However once the story starts to unfold it actually gets a bit better. The guys are quite enjoyable and easy to follow in love with. It is about their love for each other and going further then what they are use to or comfortable with. It is a well written story that is engaging and compelling to a reader. It flows evenly and at the right pace to keep your attention captured. The characters come off as someone you would hang out with.

However Leroy and Griff come off whiny and very needy. It might be fine in parts but in this book it seemed a bit to much. Then Karel feels like he is their parent but you can still see the love for each other. There was the passion between the three and the heat burning. I just couldn’t connect with the story like I should have though. It was missing something that would have made it quite a bit better for me.

I will admit that this is not one of those stories that will be read more than once though. It is a good read and the characters are hot and steamy. It is one of those stories that seem like it could be real in life instead of a book. Overall the story was pretty good and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it.

Review: Love and Murder:

Jake is a small town lawyer with his own firm. He’s in a relationship with Noah, the man he cheated on his ex with. There is a lot of bringing up the past with his his ex wife and ex lovers coming into the picture from time to time. I wondered if Jake actually knew how to be faithful to anyone. A murder has Frank hiring him to represent him in a murder trial. This case was wild with two other murders happening a long the way. Twists and turns abound as the killer or killers are tracked down as well as Jake meeting a new love interest that turns out to be someone he knows but doesn’t remember at first. I was disappointed we never found out who killed Hannah.

Love and Pain:

This book takes place a year after book one. Xavier, the FBI agent from book one, and Jake have moved in together and are trying to make a go of things. Between Jake not coming to grips with certain aspects of his past and Xavier keeping things from Jake the two have some disagreements from time to time. A job opportunity presents itself to Jake that may not be what it seems and the past comes back to haunt Jake.

I honestly enjoyed both these stories. There was no shortage of action, drama and suspense that seemed to follow Jake at all turns. Danger is around every corner and even the heroes are injured from time to time. The things that kept me from loving the first book was all the cheating that was brought up. It was obvious to me that Jake was never ready to commit to all those other relationships so it confused me as to why he married Elena and committed to the others. The second and most upsetting thing for me was all the sentences with missing words or words that were added that did not need to be there. This made for constantly having to reread sentences to understand what the story was trying to say at times. Not to mention Jake’s name was used when it should have been Xavier’s.
