Play by the Rules

by

Frey Ortega

It was just supposed to be an interview.
It was just supposed to be one morning.
It was just supposed to be a memory…
How did it end up like this?

Sensitive and melodramatic Emmett Yang has had enough of the dating world. Enter Joe Kaminski, former quarterback–driven, determined, recently out of the closet–and knows exactly who he wants. That just happens to be Emmett.

Emmett is convinced that their chance meeting is just a one-time thing: a memory to be cherished. He doesn’t think that Joe would ever really want to be with him. After all, he’s…him, and Joe is Joe. He’s nowhere near Joe’s nebula, and there are rules and norms and mores to be followed about this sort of situation, none of which end with Joe and him together.

But can the former quarterback show Emmett that there are no rules in love?

Play by the Rules is a standalone gay romantic comedy in the first-person perspective. This book is steamy and includes full sex scenes, searing kisses, dramatic declarations of love and a protagonist’s questionable knowledge of sexual health. It is a HEA, has no cliff-hangers or cheating, and is approximately 59,000 words.

Review: Like A Love Story is a super sweet story that would have you going into a diabetic coma – and totally the type of sappy story that I love to read. Number one, Frey Ortega is a go-to on my Siren Publishing authors list. I like the writing – the style and the pace of all the author’s books is definitely an attraction. However, secondly, and most importantly this is the type of story which has a massive draw to me because I can’t resist a love story between a guy and his brother’s best friend, who in this case had left their small town home.

The story is about Seth Standford. His life appears to be in a bit of a slump, though he doesn’t see it that way. Seth lives in his parent’s basement playing games in his spare time. He’s become a bit of a hermit, something that everyone around him worries about more than himself. Seth enjoys his online friends and his family is enough contact he needs at the moment. But then he hears the news that his secret crush – Hunter Rodriguez – his brother’s best friend, is coming back to visit their small town of Camden Cove.

The Standford’s and the Rodriguez’s seem to be well to do upper crust of the local society, and add in the fact that Seth’s brother is the mayor, it’s the start of a clique group. When Seth’s brother is sent to hospital after being hit by a drunk driver, this clique gets planning when they discover that Seth doesn’t hate Hunter, but likes him. When Hunter does return he doesn’t need much pushing in Seth’s direction – at first it felt a bit shallow but it does quickly develop into something more.

There is a small dose of drama, which I have to admit that I saw coming a mile away. Nonetheless, it gave the story the little bit of a kick it needed to get Seth and Hunter to the end of HEA. Seriously can’t wait for the next installment! Here’s me hoping to read the story of Seth’s brother (the town mayor) and Hunter’s boss (a millionaire looking to invest in the town).

Review: This is not at all linked with Frey Ortega’s book, A Billionaire’s Gamble, but if you have read that you will enjoy Falling for the Assistant, perhaps even more than the former. I feel the following opinion needs repeating for this review, although I have said it before of Frey Ortega: I have yet to find a Frey Ortega book that I do not enjoy. And I really loved this one – sometimes, when I’m ultra-stressed I love nothing more than reading a book that I describe as a “trashy romance”. Trashy in the fact that the plot line reminds of a typical Mills and Boon novel minus the inevitable pregnancy, because this is neither a paranormal or m-preg book (though I would read that too!).

And this certainly does fall under the old trashy romance banner, I think. We got a rich, sexy guy who is a bit lost when it comes to love, and he happens to fall in love with his sexy, smart and super efficient assistant. There is also a crazy ex thrown into the mix. In this case, the sexy and smart assistant is Caden. He’s been Raphael Shepherd’s assistant for a few months now, in New York, after graduating college. Raphael requires Caden to leave New York and move over to California to continue his role as assistant while his California assistant goes on maternity leave. Yet, all Raphael wants not only his wonderfully efficient assistant in his life he also wants him in his bed.

The guys are complete opposites of each other but they work so perfectly together. The sexual tension is sizzling and obvious from the start. Caden is the type of man that can calm the tense millionaire and it’s not just because he can make work life easier. He just has type of fun personality that compliments Raphael’s serious personality. But in between all that, Raphael’s other assistant, Serena, is there to steer the lover’s true in some sort of energetic, pregnant fairy godmother sort of way.

Trashy in the fact that the plot line reminds of a typical Mills and Boon novel minus the inevitable pregnancy, because this is neither a paranormal or m-preg book (though I would read that too!).

The plot itself is fun. It’s simple and interesting enough to capture my attention. It’s your usual nerdy, bookish guy meets rich, immature playboy. For me this book did hit close to home because one MC, Dylan, has started his PhD and was left wondering about his academic future. Seriously, if you’re doing your Masters or PhD and close to submitting your thesis, this may not be the best get away from your stress, take it from someone with that exact experience.

Dylan, however, is a sweetheart and for more reasons than his academic pursuits, he is definitely the most relatable character. Then there is Remy, although he is far less relatable he is no doubt a wonderful, dark and brooding rich man who you could just fall for. The fact that he is also a playboy and immature at the start, makes him a bit stereotypical. But his character is redeemed because Dylan comes into his life and he begins to fall in love with the lovable nerd. Remy doesn’t

I adored this book from start to finish. It was fun and honestly, that was all I needed. In fact, I would love to see some of Remy’s friends find their own HEAs in their own stories.

Review: Each book in the Caer Tarw collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

There is nothing better than a good paranormal romance with gorgeous men involved. In fact it is three gorgeous men. The world this author has written about fascinated me and had me wishing to be there also. This story was unique in the fact that the characters are Minotaurs and a little rabbit. And let’s not forget that when Minotaurs mate they get their mates pregnant and not with just one baby either.

Merrit got the letter to come to Caer Tarw and see if he was a mate to two Minotaurs. Merrit is a little sparrow shifter who has no clue what he can do. He has no idea about mates. He starts to hum a tune, which calls two very big Minotaurs towards him. He had not known what his tune could do.

David and Connor have always been best friends and were lovers when they were in the mood. They wanted each other, but knew that they needed a third. A third that could calm their beast. They had not known that a tune would almost have them drowning, but they were a bit more surprised by the little sparrow whose call summoned them. On top of that there was danger coming for their little mate.

I have no trouble recommending this title…and all the books in this series.

Review: Each book in the Lykaios collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

I must admit that this series has a different type of tone to it that makes it a bit off to me. Although it doesn’t take away from the story at all. The first time I read Frey was with the first book to this series, and at first I wasn’t sure what to expect. The gods cursed them to spend his life on Lykaois Island. After a thousand years though, fate decided it was time to let the guys love and receive love. To find their mates after so long is a blessing for the guys.

Nicodemus was a warrior all the way. He was strong-willed and strong in body. He was an ass, hot and ill-tempered most of the time. However after a thousand years he finally grew up. All he wanted was his mate, especially after watching his alpha and another pack mate find their mates. He knew who his mate was. He just had to get the courage to approach Addison.

Addison worked for the company that was building the hotel on Lykaois Island. He had been in a relationship that was not healthy for him. He had needed to escape and he had done that. Two years and he still felt like he was going to be forced back. Then he has found out that he is mated to one of the sexy wolves. Now he just had to let Nico know what was going on and pray that it would be ok. He should have known that wolves mate for life.

This book just grabs your attention from the moment you start reading and keeps it there till you have read every word. Hell my attention is caught by the cover right off the bat. This book gave me everything I could ask for in a story and so much more.

I loved this one and cannot wait for the next amazing story.

Review: This was a wacky, crazy, and pretty damn good read. I have never read a book where each chapter is by a different author. But I must say they did a great job.

Quad is changed into a wolf shifter and abandoned by his maker. Now months later Quad is driving in his new car when it decides to die outside a little town called Trinity Valley. From there things just get weirder and weirder.

Gypsy is not human himself and is able to explain to Quad a little about shifters. But Gypsy has been hurt by shifters before and has a pretty big issue with them. But that doesn’t stop these two from mixing it up both in and out of bed. The chemistry is there from the start even when they don’t seem to like each other much.

For a book written by twenty-five different authors, there was a good flow in the story. It was fast paced and gave the needed information without dragging down the story with too much. The sex was steamy and very hot. The main characters were easy to like and personable.

A lot happens in a very short amount of time. There was tons of twist and turns going on throughout as Quad and Gypsy try to figure out what the hell is going on. There was some wicked planning going on by the bad guys.

This was a well written story by some of my favorite authors. It was entertaining, humorous, sexy, and wicked fun to read.

This story was unique in the fact that the characters are Minotaurs and a little rabbit. And let’s not forget that when Minotaurs mate they get their mates pregnant and not with just one baby either.
Hayden is a little rabbit shifter who is quite bored with life. So when he gets a letter from the council giving him a three-week vacation in Ireland he was stoked.

Rabbits are a little different from most shifters. They are given more than one mate because they are always horny. They have a very high sex drive. This is a good thing because his two mates are Minotaurs. Two very big Minotaurs.

Brian and Ronan have done the unusual. They have taken each other for mates. They knew that they needed a third because let’s face it they are both very dominate. So when they saw Hayden they knew that this man was theirs, or that they hope he was. Now Hayden knew right when he saw them that they were definite mates. The sex is hot between them but let’s face it men don’t always use their brains. They forgot to tell their little mate that he can get pregnant. Talk about a blast.

When these three meet and get together it was kind of anti-climactic. I expected some type of fight but nope Hayden was all for it. The story does move a little too fast for me but it didn’t take away from the story itself. It gives you three gorgeous men, hot sex, excitement but it needed a bit of danger and suspense added to it.

This story however was just cute and sweet. I did love the fact that when Brian and Ronan think they have screwed up they ended up fighting among themselves. That shows their love for their little mate.

Review: Each book in Into the New World collection features a different romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. There is nothing better than a good paranormal romance with two gorgeous men involved. There is something about the way that Frey tells a story that will not only draw you in and keep your attention the whole time. The characters are beautifully written with big hearts, however if you cross them, they have no problem putting you down. They will protect their mates with their entire lives. I had a blast reading this story. This story is perfect for when you are trying to take a break.

Micah saved Erik’s life when he bonded with him to get him away from the witch that held him prisoner. He had no realized that it basically mated them. He wasn’t so sure what to think about it, even though he did want Erik. He felt like he didn’t deserve his mate. However, he was turned on all the time.

Now that his master had been killed, he was running on hope. That ended when his home’s leader wanted him back. He wanted to beat, torture and possibly rape him. He was terrified and even more so. His family was in danger from the man. Now he could only pray and hope they find a way to save his mother and father.

Erik was saved by Micah and loved the fact that he was bonded to the little man. He did love to tease him by calling him pretty, although his mate did have a feisty attitude about it. He was slowly falling in love with the man who save him and bonded with him. He would do everything in his power to keep him safe.

I absolutely love this book almost as much as I have loved the other’s in this series. I can’t wait to read the next story. When Frey puts out a book, I am usually there to eat them up. They do have a bit of a serious tone to them but there is a bit of humor in them that I love. It caught my attention from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end. It also gave me almost everything I could want in a book.

I would definitely recommend reading this book. Trust me it will keep you laughing, crying, loving, and having fun.

Kai was a human who saw things in his dreams. He had been dreaming of a sexy man, but he only saw him from the backside. He was friends with many of the paranormal world, even if he didn’t truly know it. He was a gentle young man, whose family disowned him when he was gay.

Now here he stands with his friends, and his eyes are on one big man standing across the room. He was turned on, but didn’t know if he should approach or not. He was known for sleeping with others, but I am not too sure about that. In one part of the story, it came across as if he had not been breached. So I am not too sure about that part. However when he looks at Darius, he is looking for the future.

Darius is looking at his mate. He knows a bit about Kai, but would love to know more about him. Now if only he would get off his ass and approach the young man. He knows that he will have to tell the man what he is, but until then they have many things to learn about each other.

Review: This is part of the Into the New World series and they should be read in order. Each story gives you a new romancing couple but the stories mingle with the previous books. The characters are beautifully written with quite a lot of heart and soul put into them. This is the second book but it was way better than book one, and book one was pretty good. I love the kick ass feeling one gets when someone you loves kicks ass to get you back. I also am left a little heartbroken to learn who sold Jaycee to begin with.

Jayce had been at home, alone when the door was broken down, and he was abducted. He was sold to a man as a slave, but another man bought him to save him. He wakes up to find a very sexy man but he is a bit lost in why anyone would do what they did to begin with. Demitri and his family bought Jayce from the slave traders to save him from the horrible fate that many receive. Demitri is surprised that Jayce is more willing to go forward without a fight and Jayce is surprise to learn that Demitri is a vampire. Who knew the paranormal world existed.

When the sparks fly between these two, you might as well just hold on for dear life because it is extremely hot with these two. However, the dangers still come for Jayce and when he realizes who sold him to begin with it is up to Demitri to help him overcome the pain.

I loved this book and cannot wait to get my hands on the next one. It gave me everything I could possibly want in a story and in fact went way over my mark. It caught my attention the moment I started reading and kept it going all the way to the end. I was a little surprised at how easy Jayce takes it all but he is one of the strongest young men I have ever had the fortune to read about. He is so young that you would expect parties and fun, but he goes to school, works two jobs to support himself and help his family. He is so easy to fall in love with. Demitri comes off a little bit lazy but when it comes to his mate, heads will fly.

I loved this book and I can’t wait to check out the rest of this author’s stories.
