Road Trip Vol II

by

B.A. Tortuga

Road Trip Collection

The course of love is a rough ride, but for ecoterrorist MJ, ridge runner Sonny, physicist Paddy, psychic Neil, genetically enhanced English professor Duncan, and the assassin known as Cowboy, the road to romance is a heart-stopping trip—one full of kidnappings, explosions, secret programs, and supersoldiers. They’re an awful ragged bunch to be considered heroes.

Under Pressure

Sonny and MJ’s retirement may be in jeopardy, but at least they’re together on a new boat—with no annoying hostages. Then Cowboy, MJ’s old friend, gets in touch, bringing with him a host of complications, including Professor Duncan, who has ties to the Program. A call for help from Paddy sets them all on a collision course with a deadly specter from the past. As MJ makes his plans, Sonny is shaken by the possibility of losing everything.

Walking on the Sun

Sonny is determined to raise hell to hunt for MJ—problem is, will MJ know anyone, or himself, once they catch up to him? Neil and Paddy are healing but reluctantly join the effort, as Cowboy and Duncan help Sonny prepare for a showdown. Sonny might be ragged, but he’s MJ’s hero, and he is not about to give up on the most important thing in his life, even if it kills him. Will everyone survive the last epic battle, or will they go out in a blaze of glory?

Wolf And The Holly

(The Rowan Harbor Cycle 02)
by

Sam Burns

Five years ago, Jesse dropped out of college and came home to Rowan Harbor to find safety with his pack. A broken man, he’s been living as though the world is ending—allergic to responsibility and spending most of his nights at the local bar.

But he can’t avoid growing up forever. On the night of his thirtieth birthday party, he finds his childhood friend Isla unconscious, attacked in the middle of their peaceful hometown. The wolf inside him wants to protect its people from the slick-haired, smooth-talking vampire who’s brought trouble to town, and Jesse can’t run from his instincts any longer.

Now that his inner wolf is out of its cage, it’s picked the most inconvenient moment to find its mate. Sean Anderson—recently back from college and much changed from the skinny preteen Jesse once knew—is just what he never knew he needed.

Trigger Warning: discussion of past abuse.

This novel is intended for adult audiences, and contains swearing and sex.

This is the second of nine books in The Rowan Harbor Cycle, not a standalone. It continues where the first book left off. Jesse and Sean will return in book five to continue their story, so this book contains a HFN, not their HEA.

Review: Mark and Luke are taking their daughter to the Epcot Center. However they need a little fun time of their own, but must wait.

Ok truth is, the blurb pretty much gives the whole story away. It is just about two parents, one who is a dragon, wanting to get it on. But they have to be parent’s first. There really is not a story here. I hope the rest of the series has action, excitement, danger because this one is just raising a kid and having sex.

It is an ok read for when you just want a little break. I am sorry but this was a big bummer.

Blurb: For the last year, Jay Warren has struggled to find the nerve to tell his wife he’s gay. Every time he gets the chance, though, he freezes up. He’s ashamed of hiding it all this time, he doesn’t want to hurt her, and the guilt has been almost unbearable.

When his wife dies suddenly, Jay’s conscience threatens to eat him alive.

Funeral director Scott Lawson deals with the bereaved every day, and he’s all too familiar with the inside of the closet. He offers Jay some much-needed compassion and understanding, and from that connection comes a friendship that quickly – perhaps too quickly – turns into something more.

But are grief, guilt, and loneliness the only things tying them together? Or, will Scott get fed up with being used as an emotional crutch before Jay realizes what he has?

Review: Not going to lie, this was a difficult book for me to get through. It wasn’t so much the story, I enjoyed the story and have enjoyed similar story lines immensely in the past. It is most like a combination of factors, which I will explain. I will try not to be too negative in my review because there was definitely a number of elements that I did enjoyed and allowed me to finish the book instead of just quitting.

For me L.A Witt is not on my go to author list, in fact her books are very much hit or miss and half the time if it’s a miss I can’t pinpoint exactly why. Unfortunately, For the living is one of those books.

What you read in the blurb is what you get in the book, so no big surprises there. One of the problems I had with this book was probably the amount of angst – I’m not a massive fan of angsty books – and another problem is that the story was a tad slow. I think normally I would have been ok with slow for the past part but combined with mid-level angst I was sorely tempted to skip parts (in fact, I will admit, I skipped the end of some chapters to move along a bit).

However, despite that, the story itself is more than pleasing for me. I liked reading about the sweet romance between Jay Warren and Scott Lawson. Jay has been battling his inner demons where his sexuality is concerned for some time now. When he had finally gathered the courage to tell his wife, he loses her. That is the tragedy at the center of this story and the grief and guilt is almost crippling. Scott is a funeral director, working in the family business. He meets and befriends Jay, but before anything can happen Jay has A LOT of baggage to work through.

In a lot of ways, the story is predictable and yet I don’t consider it a bad thing, it makes the difficult story line and feelings a lot easier to enjoy. Additionally, despite Jay being an (understandably) angsty arsehole at times, it was so easy to relate to him and Scott. In fact, Scott was such a sweetie and fell in love with him.

A quick note on the narration, it was, to put a fine point on it, wonderful. This was the first audio book I’ve heard narrated by Charlie David and I really enjoyed the different tones he was able to add to the book. I have to admit, if I had been reading this book it could have very potentially been a DNF. I’ve never heard any of Charlie David’s work before but he is certainly a narrator I wouldn’t mind hearing again.

Before Ralph can even begin to work on Brett’s shoulder, though, Brett faces an even more difficult physical challenge, one that does more than threaten his career. He and Benj have to work through some tough issues, making decisions that will affect the rest of their lives together. Review: Brett injured his shoulder pretty bad and he might be looking at the end of his baseball career. He was a grouch at is best, but he had the best backing him up. His boyfriend was always there for him. Benji just wanted the man he loved to heal, but he worries quite a bit. Each day just seems to get harder and harder. Now they were going to go stay several months in the boondocks with a therapist and his lover, who just happens to be one hell of a cook.

Ralph and Jean have the best set up. Now they were looking at helping another couple. His goal is just to help them, but he does it in the only way he knows how. However he seems to buttheads with Brett from day one. Where as Jean is just like Benji, has such a big heart. Then another problem steps up, and it will take the three of them to get Brett back to his normal self. Even if it cost him his baseball career.

This is one of those stories that I can see myself reading more than once. It is a great story but beware you will need tissues. It was very intriquing, exciting and just a great read. I love how this author just puts together a story that makes it seem like you are right there with them all. It caught my attention from the start and kept it all the way to the end. This is one story that gave me everything I could ask for in a story.

I had a blast reading it and can’t wait to read more by this author. I would definitely recommend this book.

Blurb: Tanner is so close to his revenge that he can almost taste it. With an unusual brand of negotiation skills under his belt, he has everything he needs. Now all that stands between him and destroying Elijah Ravenhill is a dangerous mission into the depths of Hell. Accompanied by his guides, he will enter where loyalties and souls are tested, and few ever return.

Newly mated Alex just wants to keep his loved ones safe. In the sprawling grandeur of Wulfric Manor, he finally has his family under one roof, even if it may only be temporary, and his dreams of having something normal seem to be within reach. Yet what’s normal for the wolf is torture for the prey, and chaos descends on Alex with one mysterious phone call.

Can Alex have all he ever dreamed of without sacrificing his life? Will Tanner put an end to Elijah once and for all, or will his revenge go up in smoke within the fires of hell itself?

Warning: Within These Depths is the highly anticipated sequel to Broken in Silence: Demons and Wolves Series, and things are really heating up. This story is NOT a typical romance and it’s not intended for those who seek a HEA. It cannot be read as a standalone. As with book one, hold on to your knickers, because it’s going to be one hell of a ride. Oh, and just because I like to keep my readers on their toes, book 2 ends in a cliffhanger. You’re welcome!

Review: Wow. Twists and turns galore in this addition of demons and wolves. Alex and his family are moving in with Tanner due to Emily’s condition. Tanner is still standoffish where Alex is concerned but not as bad as he was in the first book.

Tanner is requiring someone to get him into hell in his search for Ellijiah. Crashing the Shadow Ball things happen that take a turn for the worse when his brother and Alex are attacked and hurt. Later Emily is taken. So much happens that it had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish.

I am looking forward to the continuation of this series and seeing what happens with Alex, Saska, Zena in hell. Not to mention if Tanner ever gets his vengeance on Ellijiah.

Awesome read and highly recommended.

Blurb: Since the events in Chicago, Devin and Noah dare to believe that a future is possible, and there is hope. For them and humanity.

Noah struggles to find his place at Devin’s side. Stricken with survivor’s guilt and a driving need to make a difference, Noah leaves his lover to investigate the only lead he has to stop the undead. Himself.

Devin has fought to stay sane in a world of horror for too long and his one shining light is Noah. When Noah heads off on some misguided venture to search for answers, Devin knows he can’t bear to be the one left behind again.

They are two men who have nothing, and everything, to lose.

Review: Dead Fall picks up less than two months after Dead Things so the stories must be read in order.

While Devin has settled back into life at the prison he’s still keeping his distance from Noah, he might have decided to give Noah a chance but letting go of the past is hard. Noah is still struggling with what his immunity could mean for so many people but life goes on with him unable to really help. Trying to fit in and find his place is not easy but at least he has Devin, well the little that the man gives him.

When news reaches them of Chicago the survivors at the prison become restless, and with Corden gone his little followers can only think about themselves and what they can get. With the prison in turmoil Noah thinks there’s only one place he can get answers, and to save the others he heads off alone.

This is a great addition to the Dead Things series. The story moves along at a fast pace, with lots of things going downhill. Devin is trying to help Jack keep control as there is a murmuring of trouble from those who had Corden’s favour, but that’s the least of their problems when they hear what has happened in Chicago. When Noah tears off trying to find a reason behind the cure Devin quickly follows refusing to let the one man who means so much to him go. But what they return to shocks them to the core.

We met new people in Dead Fall, new people who might know more about the outbreak than anyone knew. Noah heads face first into danger with Devin following very close behind. This story follows the in same vein as Dead Things with some pretty gruesome scenes with lots of blood… lots and lots of blood. We also discover that sometimes we readers wish we could be one of the characters because at one point I wanted to grab a gun and march some selfish gits out the prison and feed them to the zombies *grrrrr*

We find that without a strong manipulative personality in charge that some of the survivors are really just out for themselves and couldn’t give a damn about the others. Seriously there was one point my jaw dropped and I could only shake my head in disbelief at the selfish evil actions of some people.

Devin and Noah’s relationship progresses a tiny bit, just always remember that this series isn’t so much about romance but about surviving and discovering something special from the ashes. Their relationship is being developed in a time of hell, with zombies, disgruntled survivors and a military/scientist group who have been looking for someone like Noah for a long time.

I recommend this to those who love grisly zombie apocalypse, a hint at the truth, facing danger at every turn and still a hint of hope for the future.

When an opportunity arises, he grabs it with both hands and lets nothing get in his way. Trouble is, his brother has been caught in the crossfire of glorious retribution, and Tanner is in need of assistance.

Alex must fight for his life while Tanner fights for one thing and one thing only—vengeance, which has never tasted sweeter.

Can Tanner avenge his family’s death without spilling more blood? Or will his inner demon tear apart everything he has worked for, and lose the man who owns his heart?

Warning: Contains strong language, violence, and graphic, erotic scenes which require a shower to cool yourself down. This is NOT a romance. It’s hot, it’s sticky, and all kinds of messed up. Proceed with caution!

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: Let me start by saying this is not a romance story. It is a dark tale of one man’s journey as he does whatever it takes on his quest for vengeance. Tanner’s parents were murdered when they were attacked by a demon called Ellijiah. Tanner was changed that night forever as the demon passed something on to him.

Now two decades later Tanner is the leader of the underground. The place where all the under desired are forced from Zion city. Tanner is ruthless in his pursuit of the demon. he stops at nothing and I do mean nothing in his pursuit of him.

Though Alex is his mate, Tanner does not acknowledge that and treats him poorly then casts him aside and after ten years comes back for him to have him do a mission that raised my eyebrows in surprise. I honestly thought Tanner would get someone who was not his mate to do what he had Alex do.

However I did love Tanners dedication to find the demon though some of his methods were eyebrow raising. Still it was an entertaining story that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Blurb: Devin thought fighting a war in Afghanistan had shown him the worst kind of horrors.

It turned out he was wrong.

A deadly virus has infected the world population, leaving only a few survivors and creating monsters. Devin is part of a group who have found refuge in a secure place. He risks his life daily to scavenge the cities and highways for food and supplies.

On one fateful venture, Devin finds a man with the potential to change the dark future of blood and heartbreak into one of hope and second chances.

He finds Noah Weber.

Purchase Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: Devin is part of a small group of survivors living in a prison after a deadly virus outbreak. On a scavenging trip, Devin comes across another survivor, Noah, who has managed to survive living out in the open, who the zombie bites doesn’t infect, and who could just be humanities savior. But the journey to survival is harsh, with blood, loss of life and an egomaniac leading the way. Will there be a future for any of them?

This is a very grim and bloody zombie story, which has a glimmer of hope and maybe developing new relationships after you have lost your whole world. Devin nearly lost everything when the virus struck, but with himself and his sister safe in one of the only safe places in the country, he at least has life. But, when he comes across another survivor he is made to face the fact that although he has life…he is not living. Noah lost everything when the virus struck, he has survived by himself since those first bloody days and now he has been dragged to ‘safety’ where they inject him and want his blood. The only one he trusts is Devin, but Devin holds him away at arm’s length. Can Noah crack the shell that Devin has built around him?

I really enjoyed this story as it has a slightly darker outlook on life, after a virus outbreak that turns the population into zombies. Both the characters of Devin and Noah are really well written, with both of them reacting differently to how the disaster has affected them. Devin draws into himself and continues on, because he has people relying on him. While Noah, grips life with both hands and tries to get as much joy as possible or it could just be that he is around humans who aren’t trying to eat him.

This isn’t a huge romantic, sex-filled story, far from it. It is a story of new hope and maybe new beginnings. It is a story of starting to lay old ghosts to rest and of a glimmer of happiness in the future. This story also isn’t for the faint hearted as it has some pretty gruesome scenes with lots of blood, some with characters we are just getting to know and we don’t get a hearts and flowers happy ending. What we get is the beginning of something that could be special, and a new hope for all humanity.

So, I am going to recommend this to those who love grisly zombie stories, finding the beginning of new love amid harrowing times, of an egomaniac who just hasn’t got a clue and of hope for the future.

Review: Rob is Alex brother. Rob also wants what Alex has. The problem is he feels angry, betrayed and alone so he has no clue how to achieve a life that he wants. I really felt sorry for Rob. Yes wanting a life is o.k. but I felt he should have focused more on himself rather than his brothers life. Maybe then he could have found what he wanted sooner.

Vic helps Rob in every way he can. Even though Rob fights him. One of Rob’s problem is his denial about his sexuality. This causes him to be angry, frustrated and lost at times. I liked the fact that these two guys were so good together despite the setbacks at ties.

Despite Rob’s reluctance Vic helps him see there is nothing wrong with him or his wants. Well written with a lot of drama this story is a great addition to the series.

Great read.

Blurb: Jamie “Roxy” Albright has one great love in his life and room for no other. He lives and breathes makeup. Men are nothing more than temporary distractions and romance… well, that isn’t worth his time. With a burgeoning career as a YouTube makeup artist opening doors to never before dreamed of opportunities, time isn’t something Jamie has and distractions aren’t something he can afford.

Instagram model and shirtless wonder Tyler Jackson is quickly falling for elusive Jamie. How it went from a seemingly innocent message to feelings, he’ll never know. Their chemistry is instant and fiery hot, and Tyler’s never been that good at self control. The challenges are endless, though. There’s Jamie’s walls to break through and a country worth of space between them. And just when things are starting to look up, life throws a wrench in the works.

Purchase Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: Jamie has had a love of makeup since he was five and now at twenty-three he successfully YouTube‘s makeup advice and has become a bit of a celebrity. He hasn’t got time for deep relationships or romance but when he finally gets up the courage to message Instagram model Tyler he discovers that maybe he wants to make time for more than just a quick fling.

Tyler posts endlessly on Instagram whether it’s pics of himself or his dogs, he has a bit of a modelling career but when he’s contacted by a true beauty he’s amazed that someone so amazing would be interested in him. But with the miles between them and both of their careers taking off spending time with Jamie is proving to be hard, but when you discover the one that’s meant for you sometimes a sacrifice has to be made.

This is a cute story of two men falling into something that proves to be much more than either of them expected.

Contour is a book of its time, Instagram and YouTube play a huge part in Tyler and Jamie even knowing the other exists never mind actually messaging each other or meeting, if not for the online world these two would never have met or discovered just how perfect they are for each other.

For quite some time in this story Tyler and Jamie are apart, their contact is through messages (which we get to enjoy) until they can be together but they hardly ever phone each other… is that a thing now? I couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t have at least phoned each other a couple of times, but maybe my age is beginning to show *shrugs*.

At first Jamie seems to be very flighty and self-centred but we quickly warm up to him as he does show to be more than just a vapid empty head. Tyler comes across as a true sweetheart who adores his dogs and is a general nice guy. Together they make a great couple, but they do live hundreds of miles apart, so a bit of tension does rise.

I liked this story but it didn’t rock my world, while Tyler and Jamie were an interesting couple and their together time was special I felt that their apart time was very impersonal as they just messaged or texted each other while getting to know each other. I don’t know about other people but to me messages and texts are just so impersonal, like you can’t really be bothered to just ring someone and speak to them. Hearing someone’s voice and talking brings nuances that just aren’t there with the written word, hearing the joy in a voice, a suppressed smile, a teasing tone, or hearing the tiredness or the restlessness is what makes a connection and for me that was missing.

But the story is interesting and the characters are fun and sweet, it’s a great story for a lazy afternoon.

Review: Bowen is the new music teacher in a Lancaster school. I was intrigued reading that Bowen has sound-to-color synesthesia, which allows him to see the color of music and voices. Bowen ends up meeting Felix, a shy business man with an apple orchard.

Felix has been in a fire and as a result tends to keep to himself a lot. He has his struggles to progress through. I liked that Bowen and Felix’s overall personality were similar. There was insta-love from the moment they met.

My only complaint was that I think it would have been nice to see Felix’s POV. His thoughts on certain matters would have made this an even better story. The actual mystery of who is trying to sabotage these two is made known near the end. It all wraps up in a pretty package.

Well written and emotional this story pulls at the heartstrings.

Great read.

Review: Although fast paced this story of Blackwelder and others getting ready for war was quite intriguing. The characters were every bit as diverse as the plot. Though I was surprised it took place in our galaxy I was still impressed by how well the story flowed.

Blackwelder was certainly different than I expected an MC to be. He was extremely flirty which fit his character and the romance with Juan. I really liked the details throughout that were added that gave the reader a view of where the characters were.

Overall it was an interesting read with a great group of characters.

Review: Kellan is a transgender young man trying his best to keep his secret from everyone. But when one of his step fathers friends tries to assault Kellan he fights with everything in him to get away. As a result the step father is now after him for revenge.

While on the run Kellan is scared to trust anyone after the incident. All he knows is he wants to be safe. Along his journey to find safety he meets some people who he feels safe with but alas it is not. With others in the group not wanting him there and his step father closing in will Kellan ever find the safety he wants?

Compelling and gripping. My heart went out to Kellan at the unfairness that has been thrust on him due to the actions of one. I was glad when he met Shade and Shade protected him along the journey. The two seemed to be made for them. They travel far and wide trying to stay away from Kellan’s step dad.

Great read.

(Balance 02)

King Zagan, Commander of the legions of the damned and one of the higher echelon in the Underworld, never fancied a mate. Demons weren’t that way inclined. But when Botis met the Archangel Raziel and their relationship actually worked, Zagan was intrigued. Of course, it wasn’t as though he planned on claiming anyone, but tangling in the sheets with a forbidden angel was a vice he could and would enjoy. Or so he thought.

Anael has always considered himself the annoying younger brother of angels like Raziel. As the angel of love, passion and sexuality, he could see love connections that others couldn’t. When he saw his connection with Zagan he was so excited. Not only was he part of the big “Mating Scheme” devised by Head Office, but he snagged King Zagan, the secret crush he’s had for centuries. Now if only things could go right for them both.

A marriage proposal from Lady Zoltus is just the first sign of trouble for the new couple. When Lucifer sticks his nose in and detains Zagan in the Underworld, leaving Anael to roam earth alone, more secrets are uncovered. After a confrontation Anael starts to question if anything he does is right. Will these two ever find their HEA?

This book is a continuation of the Balance series although it focuses on a new couple. It advisable to have read book one, The Viper’s Heart (Raziel’s and Botis’s story) to gain a sense of context for this one. MM intimate experiences divulged in the pages. Suitable for adult readers only.
