Shadows of the Past

PI Cassie Tam is not the only person who lives with regrets, and like most people, she just wants to get on with her life. But in New Hopeland, the past never remains buried. When she’s hired to track a stalker that’s been using some interesting tech to mask their identity on the city’s security cameras, Cassie ends up face-to-face with her darkest memory.

Can Cassie find out who’s responsible before her past mistakes tear her – and her friends – apart?

Review: This book finds Ales being sent get an agreement on a planet by his lover Turo. While there he realizes he does not like the way things are going between him and Turo and so ensues a lot of thinking and realizations on the matter. Ales struggles with who he has become and who he wants to be.

There are a lot of twists and turns, double crosses and betrayal are all in abundance with this installment of the series. Some I never saw coming others I did. It also has a dreary feel to the story, given what happens I understood.

It was an interesting mix as the story unfolded. I was intrigued by the twists and such. I felt that Ales needed to leave certain people alone for his own sanity. As always these books must be read in order as they pick up where the previous one ends. This story ends on a cliffhanger that will continue in the next book.

Great read.

Blurb: The South Pacific Archipelago is home to a tiny island community of around three hundred scientists… and twenty thousand dinosaurs. As a paleogeneticist, Kit Sterling leads a team studying the dinosaurs to unlock the unanswered questions of evolution.

But there is something more dangerous than dinosaurs on the islands.

Head ranger Logan Beck discovers evidence of poachers, while rumors of a black market for dinosaur leather swirl around the community. Kit and Logan haven’t always gotten along professionally, though that has nothing to do with their attraction to each other. So when they’re thrown together to save an injured infant dinosaur, their professional disdain turns into a clandestine romance.

With not just the injured dinosaur at risk, but all of the precious dinosaurs on the islands too, Kit and Logan have to figure out how to balance their budding romance without letting their careers go extinct.

Purchase Link: Dreamspinner | Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: Something Wild is a standalone romance by Anna Martin. While the author is known to me, nothing immediately comes to mind about any opinions that I’ve formed in the past. Let’s face it, I saw dinosaurs in the blurb and I was happy.

I’m going to get my negativity out of the way first. While I loved the set up of the book, the themes and the characters, I felt that there was something missing in terms of spark between the MCs. The spark was there, but I’m thinking that there wasn’t quite enough character development that meant that the book exceeded my expectations. TL:DR version – I just wasn’t feeling “it” a number of times throughout the book.

Now: the dinosaurs and the inevitable pop culture references.

Something Wild, to me, is like if Jurassic Park was a scientific commune combined with a national parks type of set-up, rather than a theme park. And the romance was as if Dr Grant (palaeontologist) and Robert Muldoon (Jurrasic Park game warden) discovered that they had romantic feelings for each other. In this world a small, isolated archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean was found to the be home of dinosaurs in the 1970s, when everyone had previously thought them extinct. Since them, the archipelago has become a protected site for these amazing animals, with the only people are the scientists who study and protect the creatures.

Basically, what you see in the blurb is what you get in the book. So there isn’t any real surprises, and to be honest with the poaching subplot, I had that figured out pretty quickly. Nonetheless it was good to see how the characters arrived at their conclusions in the end, and our heroes saved the day.

The MCs are palaeogeneticist, Kit Sterling and head ranger, Logan Beck. In the big scheme of things, Kit and Logan are nemeses by any stretch of the imagination. Instead they have a complicated relationship at the start simply because their work does not bring them together all that often. I mean, yeah, Kit and Logan would have encountered the usual academic arguments you see these days of whose name should be included on published papers, and at what line do you draw between acknowledging someone to giving them authorship. But again, in the big scheme of things, that’s actually normal in the academic world.

As a palaeoscientist specialising in dinosaur genetics, Kit doesn’t venture into the wilds of the dinosaur habitat, instead getting information and samples (from blood to carcasses) from the rangers. He is also on the ethics committee, and so he has a particular and stringent set of rules that he requires the rangers to follow when they are out among the dinosaurs.

Then there is Logan is essentially a field scientist, who had previously worked in safari parks in Africa, after completing his PhD (he is referred to as Dr Beck numerous times and is explained in the beginning) he found his calling in the wild with animals, although that also meant that many lab-based scientists overlooked his expertise. He loves working with the dinosaurs on the archipelago and is meticulous when it comes to ensuring the care of all animals on the islands.

It is perhaps fortunate that Logan’s experience in Africa means that he recognises the signs of poachers on the Island, which coincides with the possibility of dinosaur leather being sold on the black market is brought to Kit’s attention. This is the catalyst which brings Kit and Logan together, to actually work together in the field and in the lab, getting to know each other. Add in the sweetest little runt of a dinosaur, Dizzy, which pulls at Kit’s heart and has him going against the ethics code and I was happy. You can see that Kit and Logan have so much potential as they work together to find out about the poachers and foster the injured dinosaur.

Review: Xin and Jonathan travel to a dying planet desperate to reconnect with civilization no matter the cost. When the inhabitants refuse to cooperate with them yet still want their help Xin and Jonathan become embroiled a in a fight for their lives when they realize this planets inhabitants want their help even at the cost of their lives.

I liked that despite the dangerous situations these two grow closer as the story progresses. Though this story is different than the last two in that the crew is not involved as with the previous books I still enjoyed the story. Suspense and drama along with action and romance play a big roll in this addition to the series.

Xin and Jonathan were great together. I loved their dynamic and the way the story unfolded.

Great read.

When you want something stolen, call a professional.

Ren is someone Sebastian never expected to see again, and the one he never could forget. But Ren’s not offering forgiveness. Unless Sebastian can pull off an impossible heist on a distant planet he’ll lose everything – including a second chance with the man he once betrayed and still cares for.

Review: I really liked the MC’s, Sebastian and Ren, in this story. They are well matched yet different at the same time. The whole book had me hooked from start to finish as we travelled along with the crew as they traversed through dangerous situations and some intense scenes as well.

I liked that even though these two MC’s backstory together was messy it was not as drawn out as I thought it would have been. This was a fascinating tale with plenty of intrigue to keep the readers attention. I found myself immersed in the story quickly.

Ren enlists Sebastian and his crew to find a gem that was stolen from his planet. In return he will remove the bounty on Sebastian and the ship as well as give them credits. Sebastian agrees to help but things are not as they seem when they get going.

Great read.

Hate buying books in a series until the whole thing is done? Then check out the Rainbow Award-winning Taking Shield series, just released as an e-book boxed set. Not only do you get the entire series, there’s a very nice saving on the cost of the individual books! Anna’s dropped in today to tell us more.

About Taking Shield

Earth’s a dead planet, dark for thousands of years; lost for so long no one even knows where the solar system is. Her last known colony, Albion, has grown to be regional galactic power in its own right. But its drive to expand and found colonies of its own has threatened an alien race, the Maess, against whom Albion is now fighting a last-ditch battle for survival in a war that’s dragged on for generations.

Taking Shield charts the missions and adventures of Shield Captain Bennet, scion of a prominent military family. Bennet, also an analyst with the Military Strategy Unit, uncovers crucial data about the Maess to help with the war effort. Against the demands of his family’s ‘triple goddess’ of Duty, Honour and Service, is set Bennet’s relationships with lovers and family—his difficult relationship with his long term partner, Joss; his estrangement from his father, Caeden, the commander of Fleet’s First Flotilla; and Fleet Lieutenant Flynn, who, over the course of the series, develops into Bennet’s main love interest.

Over the Taking Shield arc, Bennet will see the extremes to which humanity’s enemies, and his own people, will go to win the war. Some days he isn’t able to tell friend from foe. Some days he doubts everything, including himself, as he strives to ensure Albion’s victory. And some days he isn’t sure, any longer, what victory looks like.

Blurb: As the epic trilogy hurtles toward its conclusion, the fight for the future isn’t over yet. It could lead to a new beginning, or it might spell the end for the last vestiges of humankind.

The generation ship Forever has left Earth behind, but a piece of the old civilization lives on in the Inthworld—a virtual realm that retains memories of Earth’s technological wonders and vices. A being named Lilith leads the uprising, and if she succeeds in setting its inhabitants free, they could destroy Forever.

But during the generation ship’s decades-long voyage, humanity has evolved. Liminals with the ability to connect with the world mind and the Inthworld provide a glimmer of hope. They’ll have to face not only Lilith’s minions, but also the mistrust of their own kind and persecution from a new government as homotypicals continue to fear what they can’t understand.

The invasion must be stopped, the Inthworld must be healed, and the people of Forever must let go of their past and embrace what they’re meant to become.

Purchase Link: DSP Publications | Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: The Shoreless Sea starts in 2207AD 19yrs after the end of The Rising Tide. The Shoreless Sea is spilt in three parts with the last part set in the year 2229AD. The first two parts are concentrated on the threat from the Inthworld while the third part is centered on the threat from the Government.

The Shoreless Sea is not a book that can be read as a standalone it must be read in order, the previous two books, The Stark Divide and The Rising Tide has the world building and some events that lead to this book, it will also help to understand the circumstances of characters when they later appear in the book.

Andy is again a central figure throughout the book, with her children Kiyrn & Belynn leading the charge in both part 1 & 2. There are an assortment of characters that we are introduced to throughout the story who add their own unique experiences to the storyline.

I’d love to go into great detail about this wonderful story but I think my head would explode so I’ll give you the basics, the Inthworld is dying and Lilith is determined to survive, she leads an uprising and it’s up to the Liminals to stop her (it is so much more intricate than that but like I said head explodes). Then there’s Government trouble where a bitter person decides that the Liminals are the reason for all their woes.

The story is wonderfully written dragging you into a situation far in the future, filled with characters who are diverse and unique. The world building is yet again exceptional; descriptions are written in such a way that you can imagine being there experiencing events along with the characters.

The one thing that stuck in my mind more than everything else is humanity just can’t seem to break its cycle. I mean here’s what is left of humanity in an ever growing world with a complete fresh start and in less than a hundred years there’s orphan kids living on the streets, drunks passing out in front of pubs and politicians trying to crush those that they hate. I would hope that humanity would learn its lesson but I have a fear that J. Scott Coatsworth is just a bit prophetical.

I’d recommend this to those who adore science fiction, love epic storylines, amazing characters, intricate plots and brilliant endings.

Blurb: What lurks in the dark is not always a monster. Sometimes it’s your deepest desire.

Having survived brutal centuries as Dracul’s slave, Dafydd is pulling his life together. He has accepted his role as father to baby Idris and is determined to raise this son without the evil influence of his alien blood. Trauma still affects every aspect of his daily life, however, and he struggles to cope with it in dangerous ways. He also cannot quite shake the appeal of the human doctor who saved his life.

Ric began his journey with the aliens out of medical curiosity. After his adventure in Wales, he can no longer dismiss how it has become personal. He knows Dafydd is not ready for any kind of relationship, but the lure of courting him is something Ric cannot resist.

When a new problem crops up in the Boston crime world, the aliens are forced to explore the possibility that it is more than human-based. Their journey of discovery ropes in both Dafydd and Ric, throwing them together and forcing them to face their attraction and their demons.

Malcolm is along for the ride with Brenin, who, like Dafydd, is dealing with his own PTSD. The four of them must lean on each other to find a way past the lasting damage visited on them by the monster.

Review: Fair warning this book contains scenes of violence, rape, enslavement, torture, forced pregnancy, public sex and prescription drug abuse.

You basically get the lives of four men in this story. Dafydd and Ric as well as Malcolm and Brenin. Dafydd had been held for close to four hundred years by a monster, whereas Brenin had been held for months. Dafydd had also been forced to have babies with the monster. He had even killed one of the twins to save one of the men trying to save them. He had wanted to die but was forced by the doc to survive. He was just now getting around to trying to be a father to his latest baby.

Malcolm knew that Brenin was still having troubles with what had happened. He just didn’t have a clue how to help him. Ric was in the same boat but with Dafydd using pills with alcohol. Neither man knew what to do to help the men they loved.

I don’t really know what it is about these stories that doesn’t do it for me. However if I had to guess it is the dark side to the stories. The BDSM doesn’t bother me too much but I don’t really need it in any of the stories. I think mostly it was the fact that it was about four men instead of just Ric and Dafydd. They seemed to be thrown back for parts of the story. The mates come off shallow and immature when they shouldn’t be. It just made the story a bit harder to get into as it should have.

I hate to admit that the same dark tone is what is making me change my mind with this series. I just can’t seem to connect with them. It was fine to read but I can honestly say that it will only be read once.

Review: Ondry and Liam are are an established couple in this story and though there is some kinda romance there is also much more in this story.

I liked the way the story unfolds and we see how Ondry struggles with other humans and rownts alike.

It was a clash of cultures with Ondry on the receiving end. I found myself wanting to help Ondry as the story progressed.

Good read.

Review: While I’m not an f/f reader I did enjoy this story. It picks up where the first book leaves off. The mc Keira comes into her powers at worst possible time and has her on the run. I liked the adventure and the coming of age aspect that shows Keira’s journey.

There are a lot of twists and turns and all the characters from the first book make appearances throughout. I have to admit to skipping any f/f parts in the story. Keira is tough yet soft when she needed to be.

With so many characters throughout it added an extra element of suspense to the story that intrigued me. But again I would have enjoyed it much more had it been an m/m story.

Good read.
