Fair Isn’t Life

(States of Love 45: Minnesota)
by

Kaje Harper

Luke Lafontaine survived the past year by not thinking about the father he lost, the dairy farm he couldn’t save from bankruptcy, or his way of life that vanished with the rap of an auctioneer’s hammer. Cleaning up city folks’ trash at the Minnesota State Fair is just another dead-end job. But at the Fair, surrounded by a celebration of farm life, ambitions he’d given up on and buried deep start to revive. And seeing Mason Bell in the parade—gorgeous, gay, out-of-his-league Mason—stirs other buried dreams.

Mason left his hometown for college in Minneapolis without looking back. Student life is fun, classes are great, gay guys are easy to find, but it’s all a bit superficial. He’s at the State Fair parade route with his band when he realizes a scruffy maintenance worker is Luke, his secret high school crush. Luke should be safely home working on his dad’s farm, not picking up litter. Mason wishes he hadn’t fallen out of touch. He’s an optimist, though, and it’s never too late for second chances. Now he just has to convince Luke.

Lord Mouse by Mason Thomas ~ Audio Review

Title: Lord Mouse

Series: A Lords of Davenia 01

Author: Mason Thomas

Narrator: Joel Leslie

Genre: High Fantasy, Action Adventure

Length: 9 hours 25 minutes

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (10th March 2017)

Heat Level: Moderate

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts

Blurb: Scoundrel by nature and master thief by trade, Mouse is the best there is. Sure, his methods may not make him many friends, but he works best alone anyway. And he has never failed a job.
But that could change.

When a stranger with a hefty bag of gold seduces him to take on a task, Mouse knows he’ll regret it. The job? Free Lord Garron, the son of a powerful duke arrested on trumped up charges in a rival duchy. Mouse doesn’t do rescue missions. He’s no altruistic hero, and something about the job reeks. But he cannot turn his back on that much coin – enough to buy a king’s pardon for the murder charge hanging over his head.

Getting Garron out of his tower prison is the easy part. Now, they must escape an army of guardsmen, a walled keep and a city on lockdown, and a ruthless mage using her power to track them. Making matters worse, Mouse is distracted by Garron’s charm and unyielding integrity. Falling for a client can lead to mistakes. Falling for a nobleman can lead to disaster. But Mouse is unprepared for the dangers behind the plot to make Lord Garron disappear.

Review: If you like swashbuckling action, a good bit of grit, violence and witty main characters you’ll love Lord Mouse. I feel like this story is something of a hot action Robinhood with fast paced adventure, rebellion against evil nobles, and prison breaks. Mouse is a sharp and crafty leader even with his small stature. Don’t think dominant men can’t come in small packages either, his fierce fighting skills are equaled by his fierce sexual chemistry.

Lord Garron turns out to be a good foil for Mouse’s otherwise kill first ask questions later behavior. He’s honorable to a fault, and needs to see that sometimes breaking rules is necessary too.

Joel Leslie’s narration makes this story perfect for the audio format. The varied accents he brings to different characters keeps me intrigued and helps define characters especially when the action gets going. I read this book long before I listened to it and I recommend you definitely plug in your ears and download the audio version!

Great read.

Blurb: When will She open Rebecca Northcote’s box?

Finding lost poodles and retrieving stolen baubles is not how DI Tim Stoker envisioned his partnership with his lover, Hieronymus Bash. So when the police commissioner’s son goes missing, he’s determined to help, no matter what secrets he has to keep, or from whom.

When a family member is kidnapped, Hiero moves heaven and earth to rescue them. Even if that means infiltrating the Daughters of Eden, a cult of wealthy widows devoted to the teachings of Rebecca Northcote and the mysterious contents of her box. The Daughters’ goodwill toward London’s fallen women has given them a saintly reputation, but Hiero has a nose for sniffing out a fraud. He will need to draw on some divine inspiration to rattle the pious Daughters.

Like weeds gnarling the roots of Eden’s fabled tree, Tim and Hiero’s cases intertwine. Serpents, secrets, and echoes from Hiero’s past lurk behind every branch. Giving in to temptation could bind them closer together—or sever their partnership forever.

Purchase Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: This is the second book in the Stoker & Bash series and can be read as a standalone but I’d advise reading The Fangs of Scavo to get the background of both Tim (Kip) and Hiero.

As we re-join Bash and Stoker we discover that Stoker isn’t happy with their work, after having an exciting role in The Fangs of Scavo he’s frustrated with the cases they have been taking part in. But now Stoker has been tasked with finding the police commissioner’s missing baby son. Stoker is excited with the promise of writing his own ticket when he solves it but he’s been sworn to secrecy, even from telling Bash.

Bash swears to move heaven and earth to find Callie’s mother when she disappears during a day out, with his eye on the Daughters of Eden as the culprits the gang set out to rescue Lillian from their clutches.

Stoker’s and Bash’s paths cross and they end up teaming up, but with Stoker still keeping secrets and his slight resentment towards Bash it proves to be a trying time and puts pressure on their relationship.

This is a great story from Stoker and Bash; it has a dark tone to it in certain parts because of some of the subject matter, baby farming. While the Daughters of Eden aren’t baby farming it is touched upon and a dead baby is discovered, which is distressing.

I really enjoyed catching up with Stoker and Bash and embracing their characters again, Stoker is still plain and unassuming, disappearing into the background and often overlooked and forgotten. Bash on the other hand is as flashy as ever, attention grabbing and still lives to be the centre of the spotlight.

Bash is really affected by events; his memories of his past assail him and he eventually shares his last secret with Stoker. Stoker finally sees the true heart of Bash. While they do have some rocky moments their love finally connects true and their relationship moves on to a new level.

This story has a lot of mystery and intrigue, there’s danger and some horrid moments. The Daughters of Eden have dark secrets and Bash and Stoker are determined to root them out even if it does put their lives in danger.

I recommend this to those who adore historical mysteries, fantastic characters, danger and action, and an ending that has you hoping for the next book.

Review: Each story in the Shifter Regime collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order. This particular series is branched off from several other series featuring the same crossover characters in many of the books.

Curiosity they say kills the cat, but in Lachlan’s case he would have been dead many times over. He can’t seem to let a puzzle go. He is able to sneak in to places without getting caught, that is until his mate does one night. Thad is a turkey shifter who thinks that mates is just a mythical idea and doesn’t truly believe. However it doesn’t explain why his every thought is always on the blasted cat shifter.

Charlie is one of the few author’s whose stories always keeps me entertained. I usually loose interest in stories that are just continuous and never ending, but I seem to get a kick out of these books. The story always keeps my attention and gives me everything I could want in a story. Excitement, adventure, danger and some hot sexy times are just a bit of what you will get in one of these books. I love how she gives us unique shifters that you don’t normally get in other books. I also love how protective they are of each other and their families. The only thing I do not like about these books are how they feel like it is just a drop at the end. They end at the weirdest times and drives me crazy.

Other than that issue, I always get a kick out of these stories. They are a blast to read and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book.

Blurb: For ninety years, the Exclusion Zone has been walled off from the rest of the country. The neighborhood—once a hotbed of political revolution—is now crumbling. Review: I love when I start reading a book and am taken by surprise with the uniqueness of it.

Tryg is a poison master. He keeps to himself and does what he’s told by his older brother. My repulsion for Tryg’s half-brother started early on and grew stronger. Tryg does not want to hurt people with his poisons and so makes antidotes for every one that is asked for. His lover, and brother’s assassin, Arris is trusted with this.

When Tryg discovers the green death, a poison that radically affects a person by driving them to rage depending on the individuals trigger, was produced and used by his family, Tryg wants to make a cure. But his brother beats him and then has him dropped into the green zone to die a horrible death, only he does not die. He meets Riot and a slew of others who are part of a resistance against the government who have been trying to survive since they were bombed a hundred years ago.

I loved everything about this story. Tryg’s knowledge of poisons was mind blowing. His attempts at making an antidote was steadfast, as was his need to survive and control the rages within him. The hierarchy of the green zone was intriguing to say the least. They had their own little world behind the wall.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Texas Magic by Lyn Gala

Genre: Fantasy, Romantic, Multicultural

Length: Novella (178pgs)

Heat Level: Moderate

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖💖 4 1/2 Hearts

Blurb: Detective Zach Johnson never resented his lack of magic, although he hated that as a mundane he had no power to stop a corrupt Talent council from stealing the resources of the magical community. However, the return of the ancient ifrit guides led a blood-thirsty hummingbird to choose him as a partner. Now he can be a true equal to his shaman lover, Art Lammas, and the two of them can take on the council and the entire community if need be.

Art Lammas loves Zach’s enthusiasm and sense of justice, but the Talent community is much more complex than he assumes. Not only does El Paso struggle under the corrupt leadership of the council, but it stands at a place where three different traditions clash: the Vatican-trained shamans from Mexico, the Egyptian-trained shamans of mainstream America, and the Native Peoples traditions, which are far more complex than Art can possibly describe. Art would far rather focus on solving their cases. More than that, Art fears that Talent might be the one force in the universe that could drive a wedge between them. Art would happily burn all the magic out of the world before allowing that to happen, but he may not have that choice.

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: I adored Zach and Art in this story. They have a solid relationship with the other as they work their cases. I loved how well they worked together and how the story evolved. The continuation of the series was apparent as struggles over power and the many different shamans are prevalent in this continuation.

There is not a lot of action in the story it’s more an explanation of different things that overall add to the series as a whole in the understanding of things happening. Art tries his best to stay out of the magical situations when they pop up.

I simply loved this addition to the series. I am looking forward to the next installment where we will hopefully find out who the evil ifrit is.

Great read.

Review: Nickolas wanted what his grandfathers had, a marriage that was filled with love and laughter. However he thought he would never get that and did what his parents wanted. He was engaged to an ass, or should I say an stuck up omega. Their kind married for money and Nickolas was about to do that. That is until he noticed a cute red head who just made him loose his mind. One night and well you can guess what happened. To bad he was engaged to another and the omega that wanted him just found out. He was going to get his ass kicked.

Jaimie just wanted to do his job but so far knocking over the coffee in a meeting is not a good sign. His trying to make up for it got him a hot night with an alpha that made him want for more. To bad his alpha is getting married. One shock isn’t enough, well how about finding out he is pregnant….with twins!

I will say that when I first started reading this story I was about to say hell no. The alpha was engaged and sleeping around, that is not a story I want to read. They might not have a love relationship, but no cheating what so ever. However I decided to stick it out, cause lets face it Jaimie is a doll. He was a kick ass little omega who is not going to put up with any of his alpha’s shit. I got a kick out of him. However the alpha ended up being a good guy and I had a blast reading their story.

The story was engaging, enticing and quite fun to read. The characters were like any other alpha and omega pair but their story was unique in a way. Now I will admit that I am not a fan of alpha and omega’s that don’t shift, but it was still a pretty good story. That being said the story itself might be unique but it is also used quite a bit, so no big surprises there. What is unique was the way they were together and their actions were a bit more fresh then most. I can’t guarantee that this is one of those stories that will be read more than once, but it is still early on in the series. This author was new to me so I wasn’t to sure what to expect but was surprised in the end.

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next story. I will be checking out this authors other work to see what there is out there.

Blurb: It can take losing everything to realize what you had all along.

Up-and-coming London chef Marcus Vine is poised on the edge of success, but the only men courting him are investors. That leaves Marcus with some free time—which is fortunate, because his godchildren need him.

A year ago, a horrible accident killed Marcus’s best friend, Raine, leaving her children without a mother and her husband, Tom, without a partner. Consumed by grief, Tom has been going it alone, refusing help, but when Marcus sees him out with the children, it’s obvious that Tom and his two daughters need someone. His persistent caring finally wears Tom down, allowing him to accept the comfort Marcus offers. Soon Marcus is up to his elbows in homework, home-cooked meals, and after-school activities. Over time he helps them rebuild their world, until soon their lives are approaching normal.

Review: The Missing Ingredient is not exactly the most light-hearted book in the Dreamspun Desires line, but it is one amazing book. Brian Lancaster is a new author to me, but I do like the whole friends to lovers and the storyline reminded me of the Stormy Glenn book The Ties that Bind from her Cade Creek series. Seriously, if you know what I’m talking about, loved it and you weren’t yet sold on the friends to lovers’ thing, you really should give this a go.

The only cloud in chef Marcus Vine’s life is that he lost his best friend in a car accident a year ago. At the moment his professional career has taken off in a way that means that he is now being recognized on the street and his restaurant in London is so close to gaining a Michelin Star.

However, his personal life is not so good. He’s never found his perfect man, over the years he has compared many men to his best friend’s husband. After the death of best friend Lorraine, he was told by her husband Tom that he and his daughters needed space. Marcus never got a call back and didn’t want to intrude, so it has also been almost a year since he last saw his god children.

Tom has been struggling with life since his wife killed in a car accident, he has doubts in every corner of his life. He is can hardly keep his head above water when it comes to looking after his daughters, one of them has severe asthma, as well as trying to be a productive partner in his business. When Marcus accidentally comes into his life again Tom realizes that he can ask for help and learns that it’s ok if there is more between him and Marcus. The problem being is that it’s not a simple lesson and the men have a very bumpy road to their HEA.

Although it’s a fairly simple plot, this is choc full of emotion and I loved it. Both guys have a lot to get over but they have a chemistry that is impossible to deny. The depth and development of their characters makes this a wonderful read. The only criticism I have is that I didn’t really like that the epilogue wasn’t clearly ear-marked as being 10 years later. A minor complaint, so all in all, nothing bad at all.

Review: Sweet Nothings was something of an unexpected surprise for me. Both the author, T. Nielson, and the narrator, Simon Ferrar, were unknown to me. I didn’t know what to expect but I knew from the blurb that this was the type of book that I’m a sucker for. Two guys running from theirs pasts, one a relatively recent relationship and the other a bad boy with a heart of gold. It was actually the bad boy with the heart of gold that got me, I always look forward to when these guys find the one man that can see through the tough façade and find true love and a sweet HEA.

If what I described is your type of book, then Sweet Nothings is totally for you. It’s a sweet and easy read, so it’s good to relax and listen to the audio on the bus/train or when shopping. Or if you’re like me, you listen to drown out the off key “humming” of colleagues you share an office with.

Sweet Nothings is the story of Tristan Love. He runs from New York and his controlling, possessive and abusive fiancé back to his home town where is the baby in a family full of boys. His brothers mean well but since they lost their father at a young age, he has brothers that are more interested in replacing their dead father than just being a brother. As part of his plan to get himself back on his feet, Tristan opens a bakery, which had been his dream and something that his ex would never allow him to do. He has a lot to do to get things up and running, yet at the same time is dealing with his over protective brothers and meets Jake.

Jake is a mechanic with a troubled past but mostly because he took the blame for something he never did. The problem being that he had always been something of a bad boy but years later Jake is finally trying to pick up the pieces of his life. While getting his life back together he meets Tristan. The two have instant chemistry but people don’t trust Jake and warn Tristan away from him. These guys have a lot going against them and although the plot is predictable, I really loved the sweetness that underpinned the entire plot.

This is a totally enjoyable book. The pace was great and the chemistry between the guys was wonderful. I found myself relating to both MCs. I even found myself getting annoyed at Tristan’s brothers on his behalf while Tristan was battling the end of his abusive relationship. To top it all off, Simon Ferrar gave a wonderful tone to the narration of the entire story, I particularly liked his voice for Tristan. I’m keen to read other books by T. Neilson in the future.

The Signal Box

by

Lazlo Thorn

Autumn, 1913. Wiltshire, England. Davy Buckland, a boiler cleaner in the engine shed at the local railway station, was nineteen when he took a shine to the signalman at nearby Oakwood Junction. He didn’t know much about Nathaniel, but he recognised a man who could show him the ropes and how the isolated signal box in the Edwardian countryside where he worked, could provide the perfect hideaway for their clandestine games. By the time the Great War had started and these two ordinary men had become lovers, it wasn’t only the trains that were greased up and running on a good head of steam. But just how long could they keep this affair a secret? And what would the consequences be, if their unusual sexual liaison was ever discovered?

Bound by Blood

(Cloverleah Pack spin off)
by

Lisa Oliver

Maximillian “Max” Lipovsky has been Regent of the Atlanta coven for the past six months. His days are full of meetings and paperwork as he does his best to straighten out the mess left during the disastrous reign of Vadim’s brother Ermine. With Vadim now happily living in Cloverleah with his mate Josh, it’s up to Max to keep his friend’s coven happy and safe. Easier said than done. When it is pointed out to him it’d been more than six months since he’d fed from a willing donor, Max decides a night out is exactly what’s needed.

Lyle Roberts is tired of being scared, tiny, and alone. But mostly he’s tired. When a tall, strong man with flashing red eyes stops him getting beaten up in an alley, he thought he might have found a momentary reprieve from his rotten life. Finding out the man was a vampire, something he’d only seen in movies, Lyle decides to take a chance and asks the man to remove his curse. Only, it turns out Lyle isn’t cursed after all – unless you consider having a workaholic mate as a curse.

Lyle’s arrival at the coven seems to have brought out the worst in people. As soon as one threat’s dealt with, another one rears its ugly head. With the Alpha of the Atlanta pack pushing for a meeting, and vampires turning rogue within the coven itself, Max has his hands full. The only problem is, with his hands full, he doesn’t have anything to hold his beloved with. Will Max and Lyle ever find their HEA or will the mating curse strike its cruelest blow of all?

Bound by Blood is a complete standalone spin off story from the Cloverleah pack. Regular Lisa Oliver readers will remember Max from Watching Out for Fangs (The Cloverleah series #7) but it’s not necessary to have read that book, to understand this one. Intimate situations and some violence means this book is suitable for adults only.

#MMPNR #MMRomance #MMTrueMates

Warnings: some violence including a scene of a man looking as though he was trying to hang himself, but as he’s a vampire, he would never die of it.

The Fruit Of The Poisonous Tree

(Stoker & Bash 02)
by

Selina Kray

When will She open Rebecca Northcote’s box?

Santa’s Kinky Elf, Simon

by

Damian Serbu

Santa has big plans to release a story about himself right before Christmas, revealing his true nature as a vampire. He decides the best advanced publicity comes from reality stories and enlists Simon the Elf, a captive former human, to hit Chicago for the holidays and strike up a romance.

Santa wants Simon to document the whole thing, so they can give people a taste for life under Santa’s enslavement before the main story hits. Forced to the Second City against his will, Simon at first resists Santa’s orders, knowing a romance would be short lived at best, and at worst bring some innocent victim into Santa’s evil orbit.

But Simon failed to reckon with the charm and wit of Jonah, a hot guy he meets his first night on the town. Falling hard, Simon takes up with his new love despite knowing the awful choice ahead of him. Santa’s Kinky Elf, Simon, tells you this tragic love story in the elf’s own words.
