(World of Love 02)
by

Peter Grover

Nature’s call of desire among golden fields and intoxicating red-lipped poppies seems to proclaim a path to love and healing in southern France. Yet Peter, an American university student struggling with self-doubt following a failed love affair, is determined never to be hurt again. While on a vacation with his widowed mother, Peter is smitten by Gaston, a handsome local baker. Gaston, less bold than Peter, is drawn to Peter as well but fearful of the loss of family esteem—particularly the respect of his cousin Mario, who looks up to Gaston. Their friendship grows into more as Peter continues to visit the bakery, but their increasing intimacy does not go unnoticed. The road to fulfillment becomes increasingly obscured, and internal doubts and external events spiral out of control. The arrival of a handsome stranger, suspicions of murder, and the threat of harm might spell the end of more than just their relationship.

Review: This is the first book in this series so I am going to go slow with these stories.  I am not a fan of sports or guys that are into hiding.  It just seems to cliché to me.  However I did like that the guys get it right in the end.  Also this is another story that one of the guys is bi-sexual so I am definitely not getting into it as I should have.  I can sense a theme going on with this author.

Zac is one amazing football player who got caught with another man.  He is so far in the closet he is going to join Asland in it.  He runs from being outed but in truth I can see that it as a chicken move. He is also a pushy jerk but it would seem to be what Seth needed. However, now that I have mentioned the other character.

Seth is a man that has lost most of the use of his leg after a car accident and a girlfriend. Well I am not going to mention the female at all, because let’s just say I saw no need.  He wants space from those around him, and to get away from his evil brothers.  He decides to go to work at the hotel that Zac now owns.  However these two are too predictable to be interesting.  It was like I knew how each one of them was going to react with the other.

I have to admit that I skimmed through most of this story.  It just could not keep my attention like it should have.  The characters that were backing our guys just were not memorable to keep my site on them at all.  They seemed like they were forced to be there in my opinion.  This whole story was just not flowing like it should have and fell quite flat.  And then there is Seth’s abuse in the past, it was overdone. It really didn’t add anything to this story and seemed off. Let’s just say that this story just was overdone.

I hate to admit it that this story just seemed to be rushed and overdone.  The pace was off on this story.  It didn’t make the story flow right.  What started off in the right direction fell to the side, as the characters seemed to mimic many others.  Now overall the story does have some great appeal and can be made into an amazing story.  However it fell off though.  It is a gentle love story with not a lot of heat.  These guys just didn’t have the right chemistry to make them the perfect couple.  I am afraid that this whole story did not rock my world at all.

Blurb:  It isn’t exactly a match made in heaven.  Mike isn’t much of an animal lover, but his sister insists that every little boy needs a pet. Which is how Mike finds himself sitting in a veterinary office, trying to explain the facts of life to his four-year-old nephew while holding a dead hamster in a shoebox. It’s not one of his finer moments. So, of course, that’s when he encounters the cute, shy and utterly lust-worthy Riley Laytham.

When they meet up again, the chemistry is explosive. Even cat scratches, rampant allergies and siblings with incredibly bad timing aren’t enough to deter Mike. Riley is worth any amount of trouble, and Mike is going to prove it to him.

Riley is pretty sure Mike is unique. Whether that’s good or bad is still up for debate, although he does have to admit that the sexy man’s persistence in the face of adversity and embarrassing situations is oddly endearing. Riley believes love takes time to grow, but maybe for Mike he’ll make an exception…even if Mike staunchly declares that he doesn’t like cats.

Review: This is the first story from this author that I have read and let’s say it is one hell of a blast.  Although I have to admit that I didn’t understand the wife part in the beginning and never got a reference after that, but other than that, this was one fun, exciting little story.

I knew a girl at work that hated cats, and I just don’t get it.  Furry little brats who only want attention when they want it, and will nip your heal if you’re not careful.  Uncle Mike thinks children should have pets, and so does his sister, just not at her house.  So here he sits at the vet, with his nephew and a dead hamster.  All goes well; he is sitting next to one sexy stranger.

Riley is from a large family, and when I say large I am talking nine other brothers.  That poor mom of theirs, but it sounds like a fun family.  They breed, raise and sell really furry cats.  So when Mike calls saying he is interested, well Riley knows what Mike is really interested in.

I don’t understand Riley to a point.  He doesn’t much care for public displays of affection, but we never learn why.  And as I said before I don’t get his wife reference, but oh well I guess I will have to imagine.  Mike however asks him out even after the wife statement, and I still got stumped.  However the story was a blast and I no longer cared why. I loved how it is a short story, but it came off with so much meat to it that it felt longer.  That was a plus for me.

I had a lot of fun reading this and look forward to reading another book by this author.

Blurb: This time, it’s a real bunny shifter and you know the saying about doing something like bunnies…

Oliver Biggerstaffer comes to Texas from Boston, looking for a job and a new life. He’s hoping the advertising firm he interviews for will hire him, and he can put his past where it belongs—behind him. No one will know who or what he is—a snake shifter.

Except he’s interviewed by Jagger Osterman, a bear shifter, and he meets a cute bunny shifter at the hotel where he’s staying. Oliver can’t hide his shifter status from them. And he doesn’t want to, once he meets them—especially the bunny, Peter Ruiz. It’s lust at first sight, but Oliver wants to take things slow as long as he’s staying at the hotel Peter’s working at.

Peter wants to get laid, and he wants to get laid now. The sexy snake shifter he’s attracted to has morals and ethics and things most of the guys Peter’s screwed around with before lack.

Oliver treats Peter like a person, not a body to have sex with, and if they can survive a series of weird accidents that might not be accidents after all, then Oliver and Peter just might have a happy ending all their own.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and kidnapping.

Review: Oliver is a snake shifter has moved to take on a new job. He meets Peter, a bunny shifter, while staying at the hotel where he works. Oliver has been having weird accidents and doesn’t understand why. To keep Peter from being affected he tries to send him away with no success.

Peter is frustrated by Oliver’s constant pushing him away for one thing or another. He does the only thing he can do; he goes against Oliver and stays. This was an interesting story with drama, mystery, suspense, and humor. I loved the combination of these genres as they complemented each other throughout.

I loved this addition to the City Shifters series and highly recommend it.

Review: This is book three in the mermen and magic story. Kai and Dax are decreed to be together which I did not completely understand as I thought, from the previous books, that oracles were meant to be alone since they cannot go up on land.

However, I did find the struggles these two men faced head on almost as a set up for them to fail. But they conquered them and won out to a point. I truly felt sorry for them as the restrictions and rules in Atlantis seem out of date to me. But such is the law in Atlantis.

Dax and Kai faced many obstacles in their quest. A lot happens in this book that made it worth the read. It was a great addition to the series that enjoyed reading to the end.

Great book.

None of his considerable intelligence is helping him express his desires to the other man.

Review: This story was previously published by Amber Quill Press/Amber Allure, 2011.  Now when I saw this, I wasn’t too sure if it was going to be any different than the first time I read it. However I also didn’t remember how much fun this book was.  Let’s just say that this is one of those books you will read more than once.

There is nothing better than a man with a gun and a sexy little geek.  I love this author’s work and the way she puts together a story.  It has a serious tone to it, but there is so much humor in it that you will definitely be entertained.  I have got to say that I love Chuck’s partner too, he was a blast.  My attention was caught from the moment I started reading and kept it all the way to the end.  I am glad to say that this was not the first time I read this particular story; I read it the first time it came out.  So I knew what was going to happen, but loved it the second time around.

Herb is a true innocent in body and mind.  He is a sexy little geek whose parents do not really have anything to do with him.  He spends his time alone except when he as work.  He has no true friends, no lover in his life.  However that is about to change real soon when a co-worker is murdered and it leads them into a world of danger and deceit.

Chuck is one hell of a detective but he can’t work a cell phone.  Thankfully a sexy little man saved his phone from sudden death found in a street.  The dead body leads him to the same place Herb and his sister’s work.  Now he must keep them all safe and keep what they have found from the other side.

I had a lot of fun with this story.  It was a blast to read and I can’t wait to read the next story. This particular story gave me everything I could want in a story.  I would definitely recommend this book to everyone.

Blurb: For Alaska Wildlife Trooper Zanebono Fusca, it’s just another summer in Anchorage until a slew of inexplicable fatal bear attacks sets the city reeling. As far as Zane is concerned, the timing couldn’t be worse. He’s besieged with his own demons, coping with personal loss and an identity crisis that clutches him worse than a grizzly’s pickaxe-sized fangs. Ten years before, he hoped Alaska would bring him a sense of his manhood. Now the “last frontier” could put him in an early grave.

Zane’s role to protect Alaska’s teeming wildlife gets even more tangled when handsome 25-year-old Joshua Gaffner arrives seeking the details of his uncle’s gruesome death. But Alaskan officials have few answers. Against his better judgment, Zane takes Joshua deep into Anchorage’s far-flung back country – populated with eccentric recluses and ego-driven ecologists – in search of the truth. As the bizarre attacks increase, Zane and Josh continue to push for clues to crack the mystery. Finally Zane unravels a shocking discovery that makes the pieces fall into place. The trouble is Josh stands in the perfect position to become the next victim.

Review: Alaska Hunt is one of those books that gives me mixed feelings.

This is the first time I’ve heard or read anything from the author Shelter Somerset and I have to say, I am certainly going to be more inclined into looking into other titles when I come across them. This is a well written book and the plot together weaves together brilliantly. Also, I happen to love narration by John Solo – he has a real knack for giving each character a definite character and make you feel their emotions so easily.

For people looking for a strictly romance type-of-book this probably isn’t going to be top of your list. The romance plays subtly in the background though there were times that I thought that the pace of the romance subplot really needed to pick up. Instead this book is mostly a thriller/mystery, which I did find rather enjoyable. At first it had me thinking about like the book series/tv series by James Patterson. The big question was why bears seemed to suddenly attack people who were known in Alaska as bear experts/academics? This scenario works out really well in the plot, I liked it a lot though there was one aspect about it that turned me off (I will explain later).

The plot follows Alaska Wildlife Trooper Zanebono Fusca (aka Zane). He has an adventurous spirit, which led him to move with his now ex-wife and child in Alaska. But tragedy struck and an accident left his ex paralyzed and their son in the custody of the ex’s parents. People will probably question why both Zane and his ex let things go the way they did, at times it pissed me off, but in the end suspended my disbelief, especially since there was more resolution to that part of the story in the epilogue.

On top of all that, Zane also happens to bisexual and after meeting the hot nephew of the first bear attack victim, Zane feels his life spiraling out of control. Josh presses buttons that he never expected – he doesn’t seem to expect to ever of had a long term relationship with another man. Zane and Josh work well together in a sort of tug of war between finding the truth and doing what is right for Zane’s investigation. The sexual tension between them is even more brilliant.

However, there is one big “thing” that made me feel a bit turned off from the book itself. That is because there are two POVs used in this book – not uncommon but what annoyed me was that it was the POV of the attacking bears. I just didn’t feel like it fit because to me this is something that signals a shifter-paranormal book, not a contemporary-thriller.

Review: For the most part I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Dreamspinner Press’s greatest hits bundles for a number of their authors. Kate McMurray’s Greatest Hits is certainly no exception, which features a couple books that I’ve read in the past (Blind Items, Four Corners and The Windup) and funny enough, I found myself enjoying more on the second reading! As a whole I rate this bundle a 5/5 if only for my enjoyment of those 3 books. However, I found that I also enjoyed The Stars that Tremble and When the Planets Align just as much as the 3 I had read in the past.

BlindItemsBlind Items: Jonathan is the son of a very conservative, homophobic senator. He has tried the best he can for years to keep his life out of the limelight and part of that has meant he is deathly afraid of coming out of the closet. Part of that is probably also because he is so damn shy it’s bordering on cute. Then there is Drew, he is an openly gay journalist who has continually criticized Jonathan’s father. When rumours surface that Jonathan is gay, it is Drew’s job to find out the big scoop.

But there is a lot going on between these guys. As the blurb says, they develop a slow burning attraction. However, this isn’t an angst-ridden trope it is actually quite fun and the characters are very optimistic, which for me made it so easy to enjoy. Honestly, I’m not sure on the connection between the title Blind Items and the actual story. But I’m letting that slide because I absolutely adored this story. All characters, particularly the MCs have great depth and the emotion from the story is just so strong.

Kate McMurray - Four Corners CoverFour Corners: Jake, Adam and Kyle were basically the type of friends that would be dubbed The Three Muskateers. However, all that changed one day when Adam left town and didn’t make contact with Jake or Kyle for five years. But now Adam is back and he wants Jake to be his. The problem with that being that he needs to grovel for Jake’s forgiveness for the hurt that was caused five years earlier. The guys have brilliant chemistry and they fit together so well, but it is understandable that the pain from the past will not allow Jake to just slip into Adam’s arms like nothing happened.

Add into that Kyle, who is the open minded mostly straight friend. He is a brilliant minor character, who sometimes just steals the scene. He has seen Jake through thick and thin and though he does not know what happened between Adam and Jake in the past, he is the awesome type of friend that is Jake’s shoulder to cry on and the one ready to set Adam straight – so to speak. Kyle is a great buffer for the whole Adam/Jake thing which really had potential to be an angsty battle between the two men.

StarsThatTremble[The]LGThe Stars that Tremble: This is a story all about loss and coping with losing an integral part of one’s self. Mike has been raising his daughter Emma on his own since she was a toddler, after the death of his former partner. Then there is Gio, an opera singer who can no longer sing on stage again, not the same as losing a life partner but it was a major life changing loss. Their lives collide when Gio becomes something of a mentor to Mike’s daughter Emma, who is a gifted singer and wants nothing more than to be an opera singer. It seems like one of those fairytale type match ups considering she is the young teen daughter of a self-employed plumber.

This is one roller coaster of emotion but like in all her other books, the chemistry is there from the beginning and it works perfectly. While neither man is closeted, they have to navigate the completive world of opera with a class full of young opera hopefuls and one particularly manipulative mother. I actually just read that this one has a sequel; I’m going to have to get onto that stat!

Kate McMurray - When Planets Align CoverWhen the Planets Align: This is one of those never in the right place at the right time kind of stories. Simon, who is quiet and shy and always practical, has been in love with Michael all his life. But Michael has never been in the right “position” for Simon to pluck up the courage to make his move. Now the time has come, it’s just a matter of these guys getting their feelings gathered and taking a chance on love.

Kate McMurray does the friends to lovers type of trope really well, and I love the heartwarming feel that I get from this story. However, sometimes I had problems with the chemistry between the guys and I felt that the flashbacks (there are a lot of them) were a little disruptive to the overall romance. On a more positive note, this is one of those books where my mind just clicks and I think that this is the perfect title and strangely enough enhanced my enjoyment of the book. Unfortunately, this is probably my least favorite story in this bundle.

WindUp[The]LGThe Windup: This is the first book in Kate’s Rainbow League series (FYI love the series, read it if you love hot guys playing baseball). Our introduction to this world is through Ian. He had grown up in Brooklyn, escaped for some years and has returned “home” to a very different city. Ian had used his job to move around for some years and fully intends to continue his lifestyle – settling down to help refurbish one hotel before picking up his life and moving on to the next hotel. Upon his return, Ian’s high school friend convinces Ian to join his baseball team, in the hopes to get Ian out and meeting some new guys.

At baseball, we meet Ty. He likes to call himself the team slut, but he has a lot more depth than that. There is an instant attraction between Ty and Ian that is palpable and had me immediately and emotionally invested in these guys getting together and actually staying together. There is plenty of sexual tension going on between these two. These guys are great together but I have to admit that I have a soft spot for Ty and his Texan drawl.

This is a busy book, there is a lot going on other than the Hipsters playing baseball. However, the most of the loose ends of story involving Ian and Ty are all tied together is a pretty little bow by the end of the book. The only threads of storyline left hanging are the stories that have been set up for future books.

Review: This trilogy follows the lives of Sean and Asbjorn as they struggle through ups and downs to make a life for themselves.

BreakfallLGBreakfall

Heart Rating: ♥♥♥ 3 Hearts

There was a lot of information about martial arts in this story. It was a bit much and the actual story seemed to fall to the background because of it. Then through in the mix a stalker and there is your story. I don’t know how I feel about the way Sean was treated by Asbjorn after he was brutally attacked by the stalker. Seemed to me if he cared for him he would have been more understanding.

SwordfallLGSwordfall

Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

This book picks up where the first book ended. The stalker/assassin is back with a vengeance and all Sean’s new self-confidence is slowly torn away. Needing a change of scenery Asbjorn takes Sean to see his family. But things go from bad to worse as added stress and another attack leaves them reeling and Asbjorn wanting to remove the threat to Sean permanently.

LandfallLGLandfall

Heart Rating: ♥♥♥♥ 4 Hearts

The killer is finally taken care so the couple should be happy but with the pressures to finish college mounting Sean ends up getting ill. Asbjorn feels out of sorts as well but when Sean gets a letter in the mail saying he’s won a boat they head off for some much needed rest and relation. Unfortunately things do not go according to plan as per usual. They get stranded on an island, a body washes ashore.

All in all it was a good series with some major issues being dealt with as one struggles to come to terms with happened to him and the other trying his best to protect them both from a killer and the world. But as with life it does not come without its ups and downs. Great read.

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: When I came across this story I had a different thought on the series name.  I was thinking paranormal what with Knot added in, but never did I think marriage.  I hadn’t even realized that I was getting ready to read book three, so I didn’t read the first two stories.  Which isn’t a good thing for me, because I felt like I had missed some of the reactions and reasons from everyone in the book.  For me, this is the first time I have read anything from this author, so I was no really sure what to expect.  I am not a fan of reading books by people I have not read before.  Most of the time I choose by title or series, thinking one thing and finding out that my dumb ass should have read the blurb.  With this story I went ahead and read it because of the fact that one of the guys had cancer.  It was meant to be an emotional book for me.  However I am at odds with it.

My attention was not as stuck on this book as it should have been.  The open relationship is what made the story flop for me.  I have never really got into books where one or both of the guys think’s sleeping with others was hot.  So it threw the story off to me.  However Dane is a little bit of a flake, whereas Gideon comes off as a fool in some parts.  Dane has cancer and has a few more chemo sessions to go through.  The problem is his insurance is about to expire and it will leave him without.  So him and his long-time boyfriend are getting married.  The problem is at the alter Spencer chickens out.

In steps Dane’s best friend and best man, Gideon.  Now Gideon has been in love with Dane for some time.  They have a sexual relationship, but it seems to be offset with the fact that he is in love with the man.  Now Dane is in love with Gideon although he fights it that is until the end.  So Gideon decides to do what is right and marries Dane himself, so that Dane has insurance.  Now I can see why they did it, but I also see how wrong in different directions.  I am just glad that the ending turned out as expected.

Overall the story is pretty good, but for me there were some parts that I just didn’t much care for.  As I have said I don’t care for open relationships in my stories so that dropped it down quite a bit.  Also the story just fell flat for me, because the sex that was added in, felt like it was just thrown in there for word count.  There was no true heat and definitely no passion to be seen, although the cancer can be blamed for that.  There should have still been something showing me that they really desired each other.  I am afraid that this story just didn’t do it for me.

Gerrard left England never expecting to return, especially after he pledged his life and love to Raúl. Yet he cannot dismiss his father’s offer of peace without some acknowledgment. When he arrives in England to find tragedy, his sense of duty toward his family’s tenants wars with his promises to Raúl.
