Blurb: A widowed alpha finds something unexpected with a rescued, pregnant omega…

Two years after his longtime mate passed away, Senior Constable Isa Higgs lives for his work solving crimes and protecting the citizens of Sansbury Province—and he won’t admit to anyone that he’s lonely. His three beta sons barely speak to him, he has no real friends to speak of, and his home feels too empty most nights. When he helps free five omega prisoners from a life of torture and abuse, Isa is unexpectedly drawn to one in particular—an omega six months pregnant with another alpha’s child.

Liam Haley lost everything in one single tragedy—his family, his freedom, and his ability to make choices. And then he’s whisked out of hell by an alpha constable twice his age who should terrify Liam, but instead, the man makes him feel safe. Protected. Wanted. But Liam is carrying a child he isn’t sure he wants to keep, and the last thing he needs is to get attached to a widowed alpha who can’t possibly want him back…right?

With Liam pregnant and Isa previously mated, neither man is sure exactly what they’re feeling—only the more time they spend together, the closer they become. And Liam is still sorting through the trauma of his kidnapping, so friendship is their only recourse—until someone from Liam’s past shows up to claim what he believes is his. Now Isa has to choose between letting Liam go, or fighting like hell for the damaged, young omega he’s unexpectedly fallen in love with.

NOTE: This is a non-shifter Omegaverse story with alpha/omega/beta dynamics, heats, knotting, and mpreg. In this world, omegas are second-class citizens with few civil rights and almost no protections under the law. Trigger warnings for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

Review: Liam is rescued along with other pregnant omegas from a fight ring. He does not trust anyone except for Higgs. Scared and uncertain of what the future holds in store for him he turns to Higgs for comfort. Higgs is unsure of what he feels for Liam and considering the age difference he is not sure it’s a good idea to act on his feelings.

Higgs has three children, all in school. He lost his mate a few years ago and has been lonely so he buries himself in his work. The problem is he’s pushed his kids away. With Liam comes a new understanding of his children.

When an alpha makes a claim on Liam, Higgs will do anything to make sure Liam never suffers abuse again. I loved these two together. I also liked the fact that none of the couples just fall into bed after the first meeting like most books. Each has suffered didn’t indignities. The omegas need time to adjust an find themselves after the horrific events of their pasts.

I loved that the alpha mates gave these omegas time, patience and understanding given their circumstances. Another great addition to an ongoing series that ties all the characters together in a well written emotional saga.

Blurb: With the pressures of the job bearing down on him, police officer Garrett Wreckley needs a vacation—in fact, he isn’t given a choice in the matter. Since the water has always soothed Garrett’s soul, he heads to the Caribbean, hoping some time alone sailing on the open water will help him pull himself together.

But even though he’s taking a break from law enforcement, Garrett can’t get rid of his cop’s instinct so easily.

He meets Nigel, a young man as innocent as he is beautiful, who grew up sheltered from the world, exploring the beaches and tropical forests with only the company of his aunt, his brother, and the wildlife and sea creatures he befriended.

As sweet, passionate love blooms, their time in paradise feels too good to be true… and Garrett’s gut and training tell him that might be the case. As he investigates, he quickly realizes everything is not as it seems. Will his snooping destroy not only their romance, but everything Nigel believes about his life?

Review: Unfamiliar Waters is a book by Andrew Grey. Andrew Grey is one of my favourite authors and I always look forward to new book by the author. I love his characters, their complexity, how relatable they are, and the heart felt emotion he manages to put in his stories, particularly when there are kids involved in the story.

The story start with cop Garrett Wreckly. He’s been forced to take time from work after a particularly stressful case/event and decides to take advantage of the time and heads to the Caribbean for a tropical holiday. He hires a boat and is content to keep to himself and just relax on the open waters and take in the ocean. On one of the isolated islands he meets Nigel. He is sweet and innocent and comes across as more of a teenager than someone who is twenty-two, but that is the start of the mystery. As much as Garret is attracted to the sweet, sexy man, he knows that there is something not quite right about the guy. And so the cop that took the break to get away from work finds himself with a case and a guy that he is instantly attracted to. Luckily for Garrett, the attraction is completely mutual and spurs him on to become Nigel’s knight in shining armour.

I am loathed to say that Unfamiliar Waters is not a favourite book for me. Quite simply it didn’t grab me, and I felt that I had to suspend my disbelief for an inordinate amount of time. Perhaps it’s just me and I just wasn’t really in the mood for a mystery/thriller and if I were to read it again I might enjoy the story? Maybe I couldn’t connect with the Caribbean setting, which is completely on me but honestly, I do sometimes struggle with stories set in this part of the world. I know it sounds ridiculous but it’s true and I think that it’s because I struggle to build a mental picture that I am happy with when I read books in this setting.

I think that perhaps I wasn’t sold how quickly they fell in love – it is insta-love at its best (worst?), which for me can be a bit hit and miss. I get it, they are both young characters – twenty-two and thirty-ish, and it doesn’t usually bother me when one MC is more mature emotionally than the other. The problem is that Nigel has been sheltered, basically abused and is nowhere near emotionally mature, whereas Garrett (probably due to his career) is mature beyond his years. For this reason as well I wasn’t sold on the chemistry between the characters.

I struggle to write a recommendation for this book for obvious reasons. But for those that love cops, mystery and tropical settings I don’t see why you guys can’t give it a crack and enjoy the story.

Chasing Eddie

(Golden Gate Love 03)
by

Frank W Butterfield

January 29, 2019

Eddie Smith is a chubby bear of a guy who lives in Daytona Beach and doesn’t work much anymore but isn’t retired.

Whit Hall has just retired as a tight end for an NFL expansion team and lives in San Antonio.

At 52, Eddie feels at home with himself and has learned how to roll with life. He’s happy enough where he is and doesn’t expect much to happen anytime soon.

At 35, Whit is ready for a life that put less of a strain on his body. He’s banked plenty of dough but doesn’t know what to do next.

. . .

About to sit down to his favorite take-out lasagna, Eddie gets a call from a friend who wants to hire him to help Whit figure out what’s next in his life.

Eddie is a kinda, sorta life coach and might be able to help but seriously doubts it.

Reluctantly, he climbs aboard his friend’s private jet and flies to San Antonio. Once he arrives, he ends up getting a whole lot more than he bargained for. Whit Hall is aggressive, he’s angry, and he’s under a lot of pressure.

It’s a good thing Eddie (sorta) knows what he’s doing!

. . .

Now that he’s retired, Whit is looking for the next thing.

He’s set, with plenty of bank. And he’s doing what he can to deal with his parents, who are all up in his business. A lot.

Then, one Wednesday morning, he opens his front door. Before he knows it, Whit is chasing Eddie Smith out of his house, down the street, and even further.

It’s a good thing Whit is (kinda) in shape for this new type of chase!

. . .

Neither man wants to go far…

But unexpected changes are chasing them both…

Wherever they end up going, and whatever ends up happening, this will be the beginning of something new and wonderful for them both.

This 45K word stand-alone contemporary male/male (MM) romance involves a chubby bear guy and a retired professional football player.

Included:

Some tension…
Hints of a coming-out story…
Medium-heat sexual descriptions…
Slightly nerdy details…
Some metaphysics…
And a HEA (that’s a happily-ever-after)…

Not included:

Much angst…
Graphic sexual descriptions…
A cliff-hanger…

This story is the beginning of a series of contemporary romantic adventures. It ends with the start of one of those, so there are some loose plot points but no cliff-hanger.

Topics: virgin, virgin hero, out for you, first time romance, mid-life transformation, innocent first timer, late bloomer

. . .

Review: This is not the first time I’ve read a book by Elizabeth Monvey. I’ve only read one or two other books and they had me a bit reluctant to go again because the writing style did not agree with me. However, I have to admit that this is the first time I really and truly connected with the characters and absolutely fell in love with her story.

Honestly, the story is something of a tried and true formula, and fans of that formula will not be disappointed by the story. I suppose in some ways it really does come under the banner of cheesy paranormal romance. But, hell, I’m a sucker for that and I ate it right up! The story starts with Ajay Orbin, who has been trapped by scientists in a lab; let’s call that tried and true #1. He’s a bear shifter who has met his mate, another bear shifter, Henry, tried and true #2. However, circumstances have kept them apart and hurt Ajay, namely the fact that Henry had a wife, tried and true #3. Henry is a bear shifter who goes around with a team to free shifters who are being experimented on, tried and true #4.  And that is where the M-preg stuff comes in, tried and true #5, and is of course something that is more niche in terms of tastes than everything else in this story. So, now our heroes are forced to be together again despite not all having the time to heal the rift that had formed between them – really, I would have liked a little more self flagellation (all mental!) on Henry’s side.

Look, despite my rating because I really did love this book, you can tell by my brief analysis there are plenty of holes in this story. Most glaring would be the rushed pace of story and character development. Part of me wanted to bring the rating down to 3.5 because I think with more words and time this could be a truly awesome book. It is something that you could expect from a Flynn Eire or Lynn Hagen type of story and without the detail of a Stormy Glenn book. But as it is, I loved the story, I loved the shifters, I love the M-preg stuff – all the elements were there to suck me into the world of Ajay and Henry and I enjoyed every second of it.

Shadowmancer by Devin Harnois

Genre: High Fantasy

Length: Novel (189pgs)

Blurb: Marius Everhart is something even mages fear — a shadowmancer. His power marks him as cursed, a creature belonging to the Queen of Shadows. Marius escaped her realm with his memories corrupted and his sanity in tatters, managing to live a fragile, lonely existence at the edges of society.

Some might call Ayodele Sauveterre delusional. He prefers the term “optimistic”. With his homeland in danger from invasion, Ayodele will do anything to protect it, even recruit a shadowmancer. Marius’s incredible power and gentle nature make him a perfect addition to Paladin Charm, a new mage guild dedicated to helping rather than exploiting the non-magical populace. The fact that handsome Marius also warms Ayodele’s bed is a wonderful bonus.

With support from Ayodele and his new friends in the guild, Marius begins to heal. He’s also quickly falling for the alluring mage, but Ayodele struggles with what’s forming between them. Past experience left Ayodele flippant but guarded, and Marius’s open honesty unnerves him.

As they grow closer, Paladin Charm prepares for a battle with impossible odds. And in the darkness, the Queen of Shadows waits to reclaim Marius and drag him back into a nightmare.

Review: I loved this story about a man named Marius who is a Shadowmancer that escapes the shadow realm and meets Ayodele a mage who is the guild master of Paladin Charm. Ayodele believes Marius is the perfect fit for his small guild and recruits him despite everyone being afraid of Marius’ power.

Serpant Fang is a guild Ayodele used to belong to until they decided to take Ayodele’s home land. This is where he draws a line and forms Paladin Charm in the hopes of defending his home and surrounding city-state against Serpant Fang. It doesn’t hurt that he’s attracted to Maruis and the sparks fly.

The only three things I wanted to know more about were Marius himself and how he came to be a Shadowmancer since he was given his power by the queen of shadows and is human, how exactly the guild came up a way to get to shadow realm and what happened to Serpant Fangs leader at the end of the battle.

Other than those three things it was an exciting story with great characters, adventure and danger all rolled into in one great story.

Review: This is the first book in this series but I would say you could read it separately. Now to be truthful I really did not really care for this book. It gives you a new level on the old fairy tales you grew up on. However the story itself was well written with quite a bit of detail, which is not saying the pace was right on. It seemed to go in all directions and I lost interest in the story before the second chapter.

Now this should have been a reason not to grab the book, because fairy tells creep me out. I don’t have the same beliefs as many though. So I can see others falling in love with them. It has so many twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat though.

Although I am not sure how to write the review without giving too much away. Taylor is the princess who doesn’t seem to have the curse where as his brother Atticus is pretty much Sleeping Beauty. They need their rescuer but it doesn’t work out the way it should. Nothing ever does. In fact Taylor and Corentin are at each other, but not in a good way, from the start. Then there is Corentin’s curse to get over. Taylor also has to save his brothers ass.

Now even I have to admit that this story was funny as hell. I have never laughed so hard in my life. It even had a lot of action, which did the opposite for me, it made the book dull in that part. I wasn’t too sure what to feel in the end. I was in fact bored quite a bit also. It was a mixture of feelings in the story.

It was a quirky and goofy story that should capture ones attention and be able to keep it. However it didn’t do that for me. It didn’t give me what I wanted from the book.

The book starts out at a pretty good pace then it hits a snag. I am not really sure how to put it, but right when you are getting to the good part, then wham nothing. Not that the story stopped telling but it just went downhill for me. I had wished that my feelings had changed with the story though. It has a great bit of potential though. I would recommend it because as I see it just because it didn’t do it for me, doesn’t mean that another would not love it.

Blurb: An omega who can’t speak meets an alpha who won’t listen….

Karter Jenks is a first-year constable who’s still trying to prove himself to his superiors, so he isn’t looking for a mate right now. Soon, sure, but he also knows he has work to do to change his alphahole tendencies around omega rights. The Kell Iverson trial opened his eyes to how cruelly some omegas are treated, and Karter doesn’t want to follow in his authoritarian father’s footsteps when he finds his mate. And he absolutely does not expect a homeless omega vagrant and burglary suspect to be his bondmate.

Jax Orris escaped a life of captivity and pain to save himself and his infant son. Living as vagrants isn’t ideal, but it’s better than trusting the authorities who landed Jax in hell to begin with. When their hiding place is discovered, Jax is shocked to feel the mating bond with the young alpha who’s been tracking him—and even more shocked when the constable doesn’t immediately arrest him for his crimes. It helps him trust Karter enough to accept his help in keeping himself and his son safe from the men Jax escaped.

Jax’s story horrifies Karter, and he vows to protect his omega from further harm—but first he has to get his stubborn, angry omega to trust him. Trust is no longer in Jax’s nature, but he can’t deny his connection to the young alpha eager to please him. Jax never thought he’d want another alpha to touch him, much less mate with him, but Karter’s gentle patience breaks down the walls Jax erected around his heart after the death of his first mate. As Jax’s next heat approaches, the investigation into his captivity uncovers surprising connections to several previous cases, and the danger to everyone involved increases. Can he trust Karter to protect him, or will Jax’s past destroy their chance for a happily ever after?

Review: Jax is an omega who escapes the omega fight ring while pregnant. He is caught by Constable Jenks after he breaks into two houses for baby supplies. Jenks immediately takes the man and his child somewhere safe. Jax cannot speak due to the doctor who works for the fight ring cutting his vocal cords completely.

I loved that despite being young Karter protects Jax from all the evil that he has been through. With the help of friends he didn’t know he had the two manage to get closer to each other. The baby is adorable and Karter falls hard for the two of them.

There is danger all around as an investigation is under way to find the culprits. I loved how the omegas from previous books as well as omegas from different cases all rally together to fight for each other as well as their rights. Their support was rock solid and whole. The unwavering support of the alphas who believe in being good to omegas was awesome.

Great read.

Blurb: The festival of Tulsi Vivah ushers in the Hindu wedding season and tears away the love of Kristopher’s life. Three years of passion and tenderness are reduced to a shameful skeleton in the closet as Arjuna submits to the marriage his parents have arranged for him. His family has never even heard Kristopher’s name.

The festival, a ritualistic wedding between the holy basil plant, Tulsi, and her eternal lover, Vishnu, is as much of a play-act as Arjuna’s upcoming nuptials, but he believes the wedding will honor his parents and please Vishnu. So why is his Tulsi plant—whose leaves heal and bless the devout, who is Vishnu’s representative on earth—dying? Arjuna tends to her with all the care of a concerned parent, but it might take more than his devotion to save her. She might need Kris, with his clever green-fingers—and maybe a revived Tulsi can heal two hearts.

Review: Arjuna is so deep in the closet I am not sure he will ever get out. He is in love with Kris but to please his mother he plans to marry a woman. Kris agrees but his heart truly isn’t in it.

This story felt so stiff and formal that didn’t do the story much good. I felt bored and didn’t want to finish it, which made the fact that it was a short story a plus. I could not connect with the characters in the story. I figured it might just be the culture in this story which I didn’t understand much of. The whole story just felt off to me.

I am afraid that this story just didn’t do anything for me.

Blurb: The year is 2327. Earth, once strong, is now trying to recover from the devastation of the Great War. During the battle, millions of lives were lost and cities were destroyed. Needing to rebuild, the government turned to other planets. One day, a starship arrived from the planet of Glecerus. The aliens traded technology and medicine for willing humans to become mates to their people.

Sebastian Cain is struggling to survive. His only option for a better life is to leave Earth. He volunteers to go to Glecerus. He’s looking for a fresh start and the only family he has left, an older brother. But life on Glecerus takes some getting used to, and Sebastian must learn the customs before becoming a mate to a Glecerian male.

High King Auden Q’Tal and Captain Regin Priq’aq are both interested in becoming Sebastian’s mate. Instead of bidding on the human at auction, the aliens battle it out, and the winner gets to mark and claim Sebastian.

Review: Volunteering to leave earth for a better life and to see his brother again Sebastian is in good spirits until he realizes that he does not have a clue about things that were explained in the manual he was given to read but never need. Luckly he makes a new friend named Georgie who knows everything in the manual. Along with a few other volunteers Sebastian navigates the rules carefully while attempting to calm himself. When he meets captain Regin Priq’aq aboard the ship that carries them to Glecerus he feels something for the alien upon first sight and the captain feels the same and has every intention of bidding on the young man.

It comes out that Sebastian’s brother is mated to one of the alien prince’s and so that makes Sebastian royalty as well and is taken off the auction progress. In Sebastian’s case a different set of rules apply as two males, the captain and the ruler of Glecerus, Auden, both want Sebastian.

I really enjoyed this first book as it details as much as possible without overdoing the information on the different aliens, planets and rules that are in place for the humans as well as the details surrounding the characters. I found myself immersed in a world that intrigued me to no end.

I loved the entire book. Fantastic read.

Review: This is the fourth installment of Silvia Violet’s Fitting In series. By now I’ve gone through a number of Silvia Violet books and in addition to loving the plot lines she creates, I also thoroughly enjoy her writing style. For me it is just so easy to zoom through just about every book that I’ve picked up. But back to the Fitting In series, we are back with our primary trio – Mason, Gray and Jack – after a departure from the guys in the previous book. The guys are in love and work so well together.

After book 2 being written from Jack’s POV, we are now back to having the story told from Gray’s POV. I must admit that Gray still annoys me at times, mostly because he seems to value his work above his personal life on a regular basis. But no one is perfect and something we are all guilty of, I think, in real life. The other thing to remember about Gray, which is why he is so good, is that he is a tough cop – a detective since his promotion in book 2 but it is nice to see that Mason and Jack are working their magic on the man and there are definite traces of a cuddly teddy bear. I wouldn’t say that Gray is the glue holding them together – I love how Silvia Violet has written it that each man has his own role in the relationship – but Gray is definitely a the dominate player in their trio. There is some light BDSM but nothing major beyond some bondage and spanking, although the guys talk about plans for a play room.

As for Mason and Jack, through Gray’s eyes it is clear that Jack and Mason a certain strength to the relationship that he cannot. This is especially true since it becomes increasingly clear that Gray is stressed from work and I definitely think that he needs the strength of both his men to help him through, even if Gray does not want to go on the holiday that Jack and Mason so desperately want.

My only criticisms are that the ending was a little abrupt, although I like to hope that there is more from the guys. It was danger, danger, danger… then bam! HEA! Not that I’m complaining, I think that it still worked really well. Part of me longs for a book written from Mason’s POV. Because that is something that I felt throughout all the previous books, part of me really wanted to hear from other characters in the ménage besides the man that is narrating (in Book 2 that was Jack and in book 3, with a different trio, it was Bryce).

All in all, though, this is a book I recommend without reservation, especially those that love to read a hot ménage relationship that works.

(Hot Wire 02)
by

Kat Cassidy

“Where there’s nothing to gain and everything to lose.”

It’s modest, but after a lifetime spent barely holding on, former car thief Peter Bauer is proud of what he’s managed to achieve. He’s got a legal, legitimate job as a mechanic, a firm grasp on his addictions, and a steady relationship with Nikos Petrakis—stable, handsome, and recently widowed. Nothing is going to upset that, not the ever-present memory of Nik’s wife, not the claustrophobia Peter is starting to feel trapped in domestic bliss, not even the sudden reappearance of Peter’s ex—the sexy and dangerous Stavros Giannopoulos.

But when Nik’s daughter goes missing, Peter will be forced back into the seedy underbelly of the LA crime world, where anything goes. Can his and Nik’s relationship survive? Can Peter?

Backstreets is the second book in Kat Cassidy’s Hot Wire series which contains themes of crime, suspense, family drama, hurt/comfort, dark humor, addiction, and abuse. It should not be read as a standalone.

Jim Austen

They have eyes for each other. But someone is eyeing them for murder. An erotic gay romance mystery.

In the Junior students’ dormitory at Oakschott Hall, a heavy gaslight falls from the ceiling, crushing the head of a student sleeping beneath it. Was it simply a tragic accident? To avoid publicity, the Headmaster asks Colin Revell, a young Oxford University graduate and former Oakschott student, to quietly investigate.

While interviewing the faculty and staff, Colin meets Max Lambourne, a handsome don who was wounded and gassed in WWI. When Colin tries to help Max overcome his trauma and depression, the two men fall in love and begin an erotic affair.

But when another student dies—diving at night into an empty swimming pool—murder is suspected. Students and faculty all come under suspicion, and rumors proliferate when Scotland Yard intervenes. Meanwhile, during all this confusion and wild theories, the murderer sees Colin and Max as threats. Unbeknownst to the two lovers, their lives are now in danger.
