Blurb: The world of writers, readers, and reviewers is a close-knit family of friends, fans, and fiction fanatics. That’s the world Milo Cook and Logan Hunter reside in—thriving on the give and take of creativity, the sharing of stories and ideas, and forever glorying in their boundless love of books and the words that make them breathe.

But sometimes words can cut too deep. And when they do, there is inevitably a price to pay.

What begins for Milo and Logan as a time of new love and gentle romantic discoveries, becomes before it’s over a race for their lives and for the lives of everyone they know.

Who would ever suspect that an entity as beautiful as the written word could become a catalyst for revenge? And ultimately—murder?

Review: Wow, I think this author is trying to say something. Logan is always making sure his reviews are honest and somewhat gentle, even with author’s that are not all that. After the death of the man he loves, he decides to head west to make a new life for himself. He had wanted to meet a certain author and maybe get his autograph. He just hadn’t expected Milo to be what he was.

Milo has been making a name at writing some amazing stories. He was however a bit down that no one had come to see him and get his autograph on his latest novel, but that is the life of an author. That is until one hell of a sexy man comes in and not only gets his autograph but bought two of his stories. A drink does sound good, now doesn’t it.

With all of that going on, someone is killing those who write some pretty nasty reviews. He or she has a knack for doing it too. So much so that they have picked their next target.

I liked the hidden word in the story and I will admit that it was kind of creepy. However I had a blast reading this story and the characters just rocked. It does have a darker tone to it that I don’t care for but the author just turned it to right tone. Now I was at a stopping point in parts of the story and it didn’t keep my attention like it should have. There are just a few issues I had, but those were on me.

I could not guess who the killer was and that was a good sign of an amazing mystery author. It did catch my attention like it should have and it did give me some horrible murder scenes. The romance was worked in their just perfect. I had a blast reading this and can’t wait to start in on the next book. I would definitely recommend it.

Shorty’s Review: 💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

A fascinating tale about two young men, Tim and Scott, who find out they are more than they thought. Their journey is not without heartache, loss and self discovery as well as ghosts calling out for help and a an evil spirit hellbent on continuing his evil existence and work no matter the cost.

I truly loved everything about the paths that Tim and Scotty found themselves on from a young age. They had to deal with things they were too young to understand at the time. Scotty decides to run from the ghosts and travels to Chicago when he’s a young man. After five years the ghost of Tim’s mother implores him back to help Tim before something bad happens. Upon seeing Tim Scotty knows he never should have left and so begins the journey of discovering who they are and what their purpose is in life to each and others.

I loved all the side characters as they added a better understanding to the story. The serial killer ghost was a nasty piece of work to say the least. I could not believe how long he had been around for doing what he was doing. Tim has some bitter feelings for Scotty which was understandable.

The explanation of what the lock and key were was fascinating. I was swept up in the entire story from start to finish and was sad when it ended as I wanted more. The only thing I wanted to know at the end which was not revealed was what Tim did to the ghost that had been trying to possess him.

Fast paced, edge of your seat, suspenseful and intriguing beginning to a series that I am looking forward to diving into further.

Fantastic read and highly recommended.

Pixie’s Review:  💖💖💖💖💖 5 Hearts

I’ll be honest, there isn’t much that I can add to Shorty’s review.

The Spirit Key is a superbly crafted paranormal story that drags you in and holds on till you get to the last page. Both Scotty and Tim are excellent characters, they have quite a bit to work through to get to on the same page. It’s far from easy and there are one or two scenes that have you gritting your teeth and praying that they can work things out.

Now, Tim proves to be possessed so I am gonna warn you that it is a truly evil spirit and it makes Tim do some things that he would never dream of doing. It is hard to read in those moments and know that the evil spirit gets whats coming to it.

Scotty has a lot to discover about his gifts and how to accept them, and Tim has a lot to overcome. Both men will need to forgive themselves for them to move forward with their relationship, and it’s not easy for either of them.

The background story really is fascinating and as we delve into the responsibility of the Lock and Key we understand just what Scotty and Tim face in the future.

I recommend this to those who adore stories of spirits, forgiveness, finding a new future, returning to the love of your life, and a very interesting ending.

Blurb: For a singer and a spy, love might be mission impossible.

Jaxon Powers has what most only dream of. Fame. Fortune. Gold records and Grammy awards. Lavish hotel suites and an endless parade of eager bedmates. He’s adored all over the world—even in the remote, repressive country of Vasnytsia, where the tyrannical dictator is a big fan. The State Department hopes a performance might improve US relations with a dangerous enemy. But it means Jaxon’s going in alone… with one exception.

Secret agent Reid Stanfill has a covert agenda with global ramifications. Duty means everything to him, even when it involves protecting a jaded rock star. Jaxon and Reid’s mutual attraction is dangerous under Vasnytsia’s harsh laws—and matters get even worse when they’re trapped inside the borders. Romance will have to wait… assuming they make it out alive.

Review: I was looking forward to reading the Spy’s Love Story for two reasons. One is that I have discovered that I really enjoy Kim Fielding’s books. The writing style is easy for me to connect to and I find a majority of Fielding’s characters both relatable and entertaining, at least on some level. The other reason I was drawn to and looking forward to reading the book is completely shallow – I don’t normally make a comment on the front cover but for me this book’s cover was… well in a word, hot. Basically, red/auburn haired men are completely my type, so the cover model hooked me when I saw the cover on the Dreamspinner website. I like to think I’m rational, but I can be as fickle as the next person, I suppose.

Right. So. Onto the story.

For me this book is a mix between The Cold War (in the style of The Man from UNCLE) and the Seth Rogen/James Franco movie The Interview. These were the movies/television that became my pop culture reference for the book, so if you don’t know what I’m talking about you could also think gay James Bond with a spoiled Rockstar and hot sexual tension. If a pseudo-James Bond minus the Bond girls is your thing in a romance this book will probably go for this one.

As I said, we have a spy and a Rockstar.

Jaxon Powers transformed his life and moved to the big city to try to make his big break after his parents took his coming out badly. In fact, he hasn’t spoken to them in years. But now he has made it big and a big name. He’s doing world tours, recording albums, and basically living the sex, drugs and rock n’ roll life style. He is a spoiled, bored and jaded celebrity. Then one days he gets what has to be the strangest request. Apparently, the dictator of some eastern European country is a massive fan of his and requests that Jaxon fly over to perform a couple shows. The US State Department see this as the perfect opportunity to see into the country Vasnytia and get some intelligence. Vasnytia is basically like North Korea/USSR.

This is were Secret Agent Reid Stanfil comes in. He is all that is awesome and the embodiment of a secret agent man: he’s ex-military, knows the local language, sexy as well and good to have when you’re in a spot of trouble. He accompanies Jaxon to Vasnytia and goes to all lengths to ensure the man’s safety, as well as conduct any secret agent type business. They have an instant connection, but Reid is well aware of the dangers of giving into his base desires. However, things go awry, to put it nicely, and when the guys are running for their lives the last thing they have time for is to give into their feelings.

I enjoyed the book, though I kept thinking back to the movie The Interview more often than not. I really liked the two characters together and I like that they didn’t have sex in stupid places at ridiculous times although they had a good chemistry. I’ll admit that the chemistry was a little flat at the beginning, but I got on board by the end of the story.

Review: I don’t know if I’ve been living under a rock or not, but I didn’t even know that Andrew Grey had a pen name and that it was Dirk Greyson. That being said, I was excited and expected good things because I absolutely adore Andrew Grey and happily devour every book he releases.

I am so happy to say that I also love the writing in my first venture into the writings of Dirk Greyson. I can’t really go by one book, so far, but I get the feeling that perhaps Greyson is the grittier, more dangerous persona to Grey’s usual sweet, sensual stories of finding love and expanding families.

I was also really happy to hear Dorian Bane’s narration. The danger element of the book really suited his tone of voice. I also love just hearing his deep, rich tones as well. His voice suited both MCs of this story. Both men are strong in their own way and his tone matched this characteristic in them.

The two characters we are following are Forge Reynolds and Gage Livingstone.

The two men had developed a close relationship seventeen years prior, when they were both barely out of their teens and in the army. As a medical specialist of some sort, Forge ended up by the bedside of the grievously wounded Gage Livingstone. He kept the man company during his recovery and romance blossomed. When they parted they planned to continue their forbidden romance but that wasn’t meant to be (and we do find out why pretty quickly).

Now in the present, Forge is going through a messy divorce when he finds his husband dead in their backyard. Forge’s friend, and divorce lawyer, calls a security agency he uses for client protection. This brings in Gage, the owner of the company, back into Forge’s life as he tries desperately to hang on. Gage will protect Forge at all costs. However, he also has to make sure that the man he loves, the one that got away, survives and isn’t killed because of some nefarious goings on which had involved Forge’s dead husband.

This story is more action than it is romance, but there is still plenty of romance to be had. Both men are strong and have strong morals, so they don’t start humping like rabbits just because life has brought them together again. The action is the substance of the book and it was a totally enjoyable read (listen, whatever).

Fans of Andrew’s Grey’s Carlisle Cops and Carlisle Deputies series will definitely enjoy this audio book.

Blurb: Scoundrel by nature and master thief by trade, Mouse is the best there is. Sure, his methods may not make him many friends, but he works best alone anyway. And he has never failed a job.
But that could change.

When a stranger with a hefty bag of gold seduces him to take on a task, Mouse knows he’ll regret it. The job? Free Lord Garron, the son of a powerful duke arrested on trumped up charges in a rival duchy. Mouse doesn’t do rescue missions. He’s no altruistic hero, and something about the job reeks. But he cannot turn his back on that much coin – enough to buy a king’s pardon for the murder charge hanging over his head.

Getting Garron out of his tower prison is the easy part. Now, they must escape an army of guardsmen, a walled keep and a city on lockdown, and a ruthless mage using her power to track them. Making matters worse, Mouse is distracted by Garron’s charm and unyielding integrity. Falling for a client can lead to mistakes. Falling for a nobleman can lead to disaster. But Mouse is unprepared for the dangers behind the plot to make Lord Garron disappear.

Review: If you like swashbuckling action, a good bit of grit, violence and witty main characters you’ll love Lord Mouse. I feel like this story is something of a hot action Robinhood with fast paced adventure, rebellion against evil nobles, and prison breaks. Mouse is a sharp and crafty leader even with his small stature. Don’t think dominant men can’t come in small packages either, his fierce fighting skills are equaled by his fierce sexual chemistry.

Lord Garron turns out to be a good foil for Mouse’s otherwise kill first ask questions later behavior. He’s honorable to a fault, and needs to see that sometimes breaking rules is necessary too.

Joel Leslie’s narration makes this story perfect for the audio format. The varied accents he brings to different characters keeps me intrigued and helps define characters especially when the action gets going. I read this book long before I listened to it and I recommend you definitely plug in your ears and download the audio version!

Great read.

Blurb: When will She open Rebecca Northcote’s box?

Finding lost poodles and retrieving stolen baubles is not how DI Tim Stoker envisioned his partnership with his lover, Hieronymus Bash. So when the police commissioner’s son goes missing, he’s determined to help, no matter what secrets he has to keep, or from whom.

When a family member is kidnapped, Hiero moves heaven and earth to rescue them. Even if that means infiltrating the Daughters of Eden, a cult of wealthy widows devoted to the teachings of Rebecca Northcote and the mysterious contents of her box. The Daughters’ goodwill toward London’s fallen women has given them a saintly reputation, but Hiero has a nose for sniffing out a fraud. He will need to draw on some divine inspiration to rattle the pious Daughters.

Like weeds gnarling the roots of Eden’s fabled tree, Tim and Hiero’s cases intertwine. Serpents, secrets, and echoes from Hiero’s past lurk behind every branch. Giving in to temptation could bind them closer together—or sever their partnership forever.

Purchase Link: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Review: This is the second book in the Stoker & Bash series and can be read as a standalone but I’d advise reading The Fangs of Scavo to get the background of both Tim (Kip) and Hiero.

As we re-join Bash and Stoker we discover that Stoker isn’t happy with their work, after having an exciting role in The Fangs of Scavo he’s frustrated with the cases they have been taking part in. But now Stoker has been tasked with finding the police commissioner’s missing baby son. Stoker is excited with the promise of writing his own ticket when he solves it but he’s been sworn to secrecy, even from telling Bash.

Bash swears to move heaven and earth to find Callie’s mother when she disappears during a day out, with his eye on the Daughters of Eden as the culprits the gang set out to rescue Lillian from their clutches.

Stoker’s and Bash’s paths cross and they end up teaming up, but with Stoker still keeping secrets and his slight resentment towards Bash it proves to be a trying time and puts pressure on their relationship.

This is a great story from Stoker and Bash; it has a dark tone to it in certain parts because of some of the subject matter, baby farming. While the Daughters of Eden aren’t baby farming it is touched upon and a dead baby is discovered, which is distressing.

I really enjoyed catching up with Stoker and Bash and embracing their characters again, Stoker is still plain and unassuming, disappearing into the background and often overlooked and forgotten. Bash on the other hand is as flashy as ever, attention grabbing and still lives to be the centre of the spotlight.

Bash is really affected by events; his memories of his past assail him and he eventually shares his last secret with Stoker. Stoker finally sees the true heart of Bash. While they do have some rocky moments their love finally connects true and their relationship moves on to a new level.

This story has a lot of mystery and intrigue, there’s danger and some horrid moments. The Daughters of Eden have dark secrets and Bash and Stoker are determined to root them out even if it does put their lives in danger.

I recommend this to those who adore historical mysteries, fantastic characters, danger and action, and an ending that has you hoping for the next book.

Blurb: Detective Zach Johnson never resented his lack of magic, although he hated that as a mundane he had no power to stop a corrupt Talent council from stealing the resources of the magical community. However, the return of the ancient ifrit guides led a blood-thirsty hummingbird to choose him as a partner. Now he can be a true equal to his shaman lover, Art Lammas, and the two of them can take on the council and the entire community if need be.

Art Lammas loves Zach’s enthusiasm and sense of justice, but the Talent community is much more complex than he assumes. Not only does El Paso struggle under the corrupt leadership of the council, but it stands at a place where three different traditions clash: the Vatican-trained shamans from Mexico, the Egyptian-trained shamans of mainstream America, and the Native Peoples traditions, which are far more complex than Art can possibly describe. Art would far rather focus on solving their cases. More than that, Art fears that Talent might be the one force in the universe that could drive a wedge between them. Art would happily burn all the magic out of the world before allowing that to happen, but he may not have that choice.

Review: I adored Zach and Art in this story. They have a solid relationship with the other as they work their cases. I loved how well they worked together and how the story evolved. The continuation of the series was apparent as struggles over power and the many different shamans are prevalent in this continuation.

There is not a lot of action in the story it’s more an explanation of different things that overall add to the series as a whole in the understanding of things happening. Art tries his best to stay out of the magical situations when they pop up.

I simply loved this addition to the series. I am looking forward to the next installment where we will hopefully find out who the evil ifrit is.

Great read.

by

Selina Kray

When will She open Rebecca Northcote’s box?

Stalking Buffalo Bill by j. leigh bailey ~ Audio Review

Narrator: Finn Sterling

Genre: Paranormal

Length: 5 hrs, 31 mins

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press (4th December 2017)

Heat Level: Explicit

Heart Rating: 💖💖💖💖 4 Hearts

Blurb: A smitten coyote isn’t the only one stalking Buffalo Bill.

A buffalo walks into a cafe. Sounds like the start of a bad joke, but for coyote shifter Donnie Granger, it’s the beginning of an obsession. Donnie is a little hyperactive and a lot distractible, except when it comes to William. He finally works up the nerve to approach William but is interrupted by a couple of violent humans.

While William – don’t call me Bill – is currently a professor, he once worked undercover against an international weapons-trafficking ring. Before he can settle into obscurity, he must find out who leaked his location and eliminate the thugs. He tries keeping his distance to protect Donnie, but the wily coyote won’t stay away.

It’ll take both Donnie’s skills as a stalker – er, hunter – and William’s super-spy expertise to neutralize the threat so they can discover if an excitable coyote and a placid-until-pissed buffalo have a future together.

Review: Stalking Buffalo Bill is the first book in J Leigh Bailey’s series for Dreamspun Beyond, Shifter U. J Leigh Bailey isn’t an author that isn’t really on my radar, but the blurb caught me. I didn’t know what to expect but I was hopeful. Turns out, it’s a pretty damn good read and the audio was actually quite relaxing to listen to.

Finn Sterling, the narrator, is not unknown to me either, but I feel like its been a while since I heard his narration and I couldn’t remember what he was like. Sterling too was excellent. I liked the voices that he gave the two characters and amongst the action gave the tone something that I can only describe as amusing hijinks.

The story is about cheeky coyote shifter Donnie. He’s hyperactive and pretty like Tigger (I know I’ve made this comparison before for another book, but I love this cute hyper shifters). Donnie is made to feel like he has no direction from his family, since he decided not to work with the rest of his family and go to college … but Donnie dropped out of college and has shifted from job to job until he finds himself settled as a barista in a café near the college. There is one customer that has him intrigued and I suspect it’s Donnie’s coyote that leads him literally chase down (er… stalk) the hot customer who has become quite the mystery.

Donnie’s target is William, a buffalo shifter. He’s recently had a bit of a career change and is using his qualifications to be a professor at the college called Shifter U by all the shapeshifters. It’s one of the only colleges with a large, but secret, population of shifters living nearby and attending the uni. However, William has trouble on his tail who don’t want him to forget his former career. At the same time, the cute barista that he is definitely attracted to is dead set on “protecting” William and is getting under William’s skin in more ways than one. In the end, it’s William that has to protect the funny little coyote.

Overall, this was a completely enjoyable story and the audio was equally as enjoyable. I liked the chemistry between the guys and I like how the sex didn’t over take from the action and danger at the most inappropriate times (my pet hate for romance books). The plot was well balanced between the danger and the romance and was very well paced. I’m very much looking forward to the next books in this series.

Connor works for an organization that keeps track of aliens and artifacts and tries to prevent attacks. His best friend Isa is constantly setting him up though nothing pans out until Jason. On the surface Jason seems perfect. But nobody is perfect in my opinion. Then there was the mind attacks on Connor and the culprit found in Noah an alien.

Now I found Connor to be, I don’t know the word to use here, clueless, ignorant He should have known something was off about Jason. I could not believe he was that clueless consiering what his job was. it felt unrealistic to me. Noah was interesting and I liked his character. His backstory was fascinating especially his reasoning for doing what he did to Connor.

I think I would have enjoyed the story more if not for Connor’s character. I don’t think his character quite fit his job description and he left me feeling stunned at times that he could not see what was right in front of him. Never the less, I still enjoyed the story.

Great read.

Pixie’s Review: 💖💖💖💖💖 4 1/2 Hearts

Connor works for a company that secretly investigates anything alien, making sure alien artifacts don’t fall into the wrong hands. But, just recently somebody is getting to the artifacts before they can. On top of that worry, Connor seems to have gained a stalker who he has a very strange connection with, is it friend or foe? Noah has managed to stay under Primrose’s radar since the company came into being, but now he has inadvertently connected to one of its workers, Connor.  Noah tries to keep clear, but it’s not long before Primrose comes for him. Will the connection between Noah and Connor work for them or against them?

This is a great alien story that has a wealth of detail, great characters and an intriguing plot. Noah has been stranded on Earth for hundreds of years, living a quite unassuming life and not drawing attention to himself.  Inadvertently he makes a connection that he hasn’t felt in 270 years, he has high hopes, but then finds out Connor has a boyfriend. And that isn’t the least of his problems when he receives a visit from Primrose. Connor is shocked when something strange happens to him, but he tries to push it to the back of his mind as he starts dating a new man. Unfortunately, things become confusing for him when he discovers he has a connection to an alien and then he comes under suspicion when alien artifacts disappear from his work place and then Noah disappears as well.

Aliens, Smith, and Jones is far from the typical alien story. Noah Jones might have been found by Primrose, but they never experimented on him, okay so he went through a lot of tests but he wasn’t treated badly. I really liked the way that Primrose is portrayed in this book, although they do hunt aliens and alien artifacts it is more for the safety of the world, but without the need to experiment. I really was puzzled by Connor’s boyfriends’ role at first, but it soon began to come clear and it added a really good twist. I liked how we were drawn into the workings of Primrose and what they actually do, so we didn’t see them as the enemy.

What happens between Noah and Connor because of their connection I won’t say much about, but let’s just say that it saves both of them on more than one occasion. The action is well written and I liked how the mystery was done. There is some betrayal and a really horrific time in store for Noah at the hands of unscrupulous characters.

The sex in this book is really hot and it is intense when Noah and Connor finally get it together.  Their connection is something that is quite beautiful. There are some times when anguish and fear shine through and the descriptions are impressive and you can imagine just how emotionally painful it is.

I am going to recommend this one to those who like clandestine agencies, aliens, secret agendas, alien loving, a great storyline and a happy ending.

Review: Each book in the THIRDS Universe collection features a new romantic couple. To enjoy the overall story arc and crossover characters, I would recommend reading the series in sequential order.

Austen had been fascinated with the THIRDS ever since he met Sloan. He had been introduced and then recruited. He was the squadron specialist for Destructive Delta and worked for TIN. He was basically a spooked. He had a small problem although I would say Zach was small. Austen had the hots for bear shifter Osmond Zachary.

Osmond had the hots for a certain feisty cheetah who kept him a arms length. He had screwed up an assassin attempt and now they wanted him dead. Guess who is coming to his aid. It looks like he might just get what he wants.

I came across this author when her first book in the THIRDS series and I knew that I had found an series that I would fall in love with. This story is very entertaining with lots of action, danger and fun times with sexy characters. My attention had been caught from the start and kept all the way to the end. It gave me everything I could ask for in a story and so much more. I got a big kick out of Austen and his denial of wanting Zach, and his fall. He is one of my favorite characters after Dex, Kael and Hobbs of course.

This is one of those series that just keeps getting better and better with time. This is also one of those series that would be read more than once. I will also admit that I didn’t come across these stories in books but on the audible part. So once I listened to the first three books I knew I wanted to actually set down and read them.

I had a blast reading this book and can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I would definitely recommend it.

Review: Ray has led a very colorful life. When he was younger he was running numbers for a bookie and delivering strange packages. Then he was given a choice police academy or prison after he was caught one time. So for over twenty years he was one hell of a damn good cop or should I say detective. There is one thing all cops have going, they never want to leave a case unsolved. However he was framed and lost the one job he loved. Now as a private detective, he was leading a very boring life. That is until Andy called him for help. It would seem his coldcase was not so cold.

Andy was a sweet young man who didn’t have a lot of things going for him. He had been thrown into being a server at his job and basically it was all work and no play. Then he walked in to his roommate and best friend being murdered. Now he was the target and he needed help.

The first thing I am going to say about this book is it is creepy. It has a very dark tone to it and a budding romance going on. I am not really a fan of long drawn out stories but this one was a shocking surprise. What was more surprising was I had never read any books by these two authors but if their work is like this particular book then I could see myself reading more by them. I enjoyed the characters quite a bit but I will admit that I didn’t care for Ray like I should have. Although they have chemistry that is off the charts, it was still a bit odd. Which was OK because the story itself was focused on the actual crime for once. That was what made this story rock for me. It was the danger, excitement, suspense, murder and a little bit of romance in it.

I will admit that the cover of the book was quite creepy also. I would have added horror to this book. I enjoyed it quite a bit and would definitely recommend it.
