Blurb: Carlos Mendez spends all year working hard at his Houston-based landscaping business, and he sends every spare penny he earns back to his family in Mexico. By the time the holidays roll around, he doesn’t have much patience for the unadulterated greed and consumerism paraded past him. Review: Carlos Mendez considers himself a Scrooge. He hates Christmas because people use the Holidays for more of the receiving of Gifts than what it’s meant to be. The Love, Charity and the Selfless acts that people give to others.

He meets his new next-door neighbor Ned and his 5-year-old daughter after he sees the type of Christmas decoration that he has up. Carlos sees the struggle Ned is going through to put a smile on his sick daughter’s face. Carlos sets out to help them both any way that he can, so they can both enjoy Christmas.

Blurb: When Marcus and James started dating a few years ago, James invited Marcus home to spend the holidays with his close, Christmas-loving family. Marcus quickly realized once was enough, and since then, he’s stayed behind.

But this year will be different. Though the festivity and chaos make Marcus uncomfortable, he loves James, and he’s decided to put aside his unease so they can spend Christmas together—even if it means losing his hotel room to one of James’s siblings, braving the cold to go caroling, and battling the crowds so the children can visit Santa. It’ll all be worth it if Marcus can take his place in the family’s traditions—and maybe begin a new tradition for the two of them.

Review:  James’s family plans for Christmas are spent with his family.  Marcus had gone once and that was enough for him.  That is until this Christmas, however if you want the juicy details you are just going to have to read it.

I think out of all the stories in this calendar, this one rocked it all.  Not only is it sweet, tender and very cute, but it is more traditional.  I got a kick out of it and can’t wait to see what else this author has out.  It will be a Christmas to remember.

Blurb: Micheal Donovan’s family has kept the peace between mortal and magical realms for generations, but Micheal skipped out on glory for other plans. He finished school, got a nine-to-five, and tried to fit in. When his cousin meets an unfortunate end on All Hallows, Micheal abruptly inherits the position of Riftkeeper, along with all the prestige and responsibility he didn’t want. Estranged from his family, Micheal never learned the details of the job. All the grumpy, ancestral spirit now possessing his goldfish can tell him is that a mistake could be catastrophic. Micheal isn’t feeling the holiday cheer, and coworkers’ attempts to encourage him only add to a headache of magical proportions. To make matters worse, Ryan Nickles, Micheal’s colleague and cubicle neighbor, has assembled enough Christmas decorations to attract more pixies than Micheal can hide.

When Micheal’s attempts to find the Winter Court on the week of the solstice leave him with nothing but a bad cold, he fears he’ll be the first Riftkeeper to break ancient contracts. He’s too stressed to handle Ryan’s attempts to get him into the holiday spirit, but Ryan might know more about the magic of the season than Micheal realizes.

Review: Micheal is the new Riftkeeper and has been having quite a bit of trouble with it.  For one he has no help, but then he finds out that the one working beside him for the last two years is the one who could help.

Now this is a short story that was fun to read, however it was also very confusing.  I didn’t understand most of the story and it ended up giving me a blasted headache.  However I did get the gist of it as one would say.  Other than some party, it doesn’t really have all that of a Christmas theme to it.  So I am afraid that this one was just not for me, mostly because I didn’t have a clue what was going on.

In our light we hold tales, and by us men set their sails.

Blurb: Former US Marine John Ving hates everything about holiday displays: they’re tacky, they waste energy, and they’re an eyesore. So what does his new neighbor do? He sets up the holiday spectacle from hell, and he doesn’t seem to care which holiday—he has a menorah, a baby Jesus, a Santa, and everything in between. Not to mention it’s swathed in enough lights his house is probably visible from space.

High-school teacher Kaden loves the holidays, and huge light displays on his lawn make his heart glow. He’d love to share some cheer—and maybe some kinky fun—with his smoking hot neighbor John. Odd things start to happen to his displays and just as he begins to think life is going his way, with the holidays and with John, a Grinch destroys everything.

Blurb: Karl Kringle hates the modern-day Christmas. He was born to be Krampus, but the Holiday Council refuses to let him help his brother Nick—aka Santa Claus—with the Naughty List until he finds his holiday spirit. To meet that challenge, he’s turned human and dumped in a strange apartment.

Lewis Weatherby loves the holidays and always has. Not only do his parents own a pumpkin patch and tree farm, he’s also inherited a Christmas-themed shop. All he wants from Santa is the man of his dreams, and the Big Guy might’ve just delivered. Lewis’s new neighbor Karl is gorgeous, sweet, and has a fantastic sense of humor—if his jokes about being Krampus are any indication.

Soon getting home is less important to Karl than what will happen when Lewis inevitably realizes the truth behind his jokes. He’s finally starting to understand the real joy of the season—now he just has to figure out how to hold on to it.

Review: I cannot put into words how much I love this book. Actually, I can, but I need to say the former to get my point across. From memory I think this is the first time I’ve ever ready anything by Andi Van and I have to say that this book was a fantastic introduction to a new-for-me author. The writing style is so easy to follow, the emotion from the MCs just grabbed me from the get go and the plot is simply wonderful.

If you’re into books based on mythology, then this is a great Christmas read for you. We are introduced to the usually maligned Christmas figure of Krampus. He’s definitely a grumpy guy, but he’s a grumpy guy with a heart of gold and he is angry at the Holidays for a very good reason. Krampus (aka Karl) is pretty pissed because he is never allowed to help his beloved twin brother, Nick (aka Santa), because he lacks Christmas spirit. It is his brother-in-law (Santa’s cross dressing husband, Noel) who sends Karl into the mortal realm and makes him appear human (his usual appearance is somewhere between Satyr and run of the mill “beast”). This is where Karl meets Lewis and the real story begins.

Karl and Lewis match each other perfectly. They are truly wonderful characters and I fell in love with them both. I really liked the fact that Lewis was made to be a man in his forties, unlucky in love instead of a twink in his early twenties, which is what usually happens in these kinds of stories. They work well together, though you will have to suspend your disbelief for a while when Karl keeps telling Lewis he’s Krampus and Lewis doesn’t go running in the opposite direction. The minor characters are absolutely wonderful too: from Nick and Noel, to Lewis’ friend Jerry and one of the many minions from the Holiday Council, Rimble. If nothing else it has sparked my interested in this world and really makes me wish for more!

Blurb: Christmas joy is a matter of perspective. For some, it’s the happiest time of the year. For others, not so much.

Twenty-nine-year-old Mick, the son of crack addicts, isn’t exactly a dyed-in-the-wool Scrooge. Mick’s been on his own from childhood. As a teen, he lived in a shelter, where for a short time he had a boyfriend. After the boyfriend left, Mick moved to the Orpheum Theater. While squatting there and taking care of the grand old building, Mick watched others celebrate the holidays from a distance, never able to share in their merriment.

Only his Technicolor dreams liven his dull, mechanical life until one day the world around him begins to change. Mick is surprised when a man named Jim buys the vintage Orpheum and plans to restore it. Something about Jim makes Mick think they’ve met before. In fact, Jim rekindles Mick’s longing for a better life and a little holiday magic for himself.

Review: I really have become a true fan of Pat Henshaw’s work since getting into the Foothills Pride series. The Orpheum Miracle is Pat’s offering this year to Dreamspinner Press’s Christmas themed stories.

This is a really sweet and uplifting story, which reminded me a bit Oliver Twist or A Christmas Carol when it comes to basing the entire thing around Christmas and orphans. Mick is the character narrating our story. He lived in a kid’s home most of his life, never adopted and all he really has is his job managing the Orpheum Theatre. He really has only connected with one person in his life, but that was back in his teens and that kid had disappeared from his life when the kid got adopted.

Things change one Christmas, a time of year he has never got to love, when he meets the new owner of the theatre, Jim. Jim is a bit mysterious, but you’ll figure out the ending before you get there probably. Nonetheless, the romance that begins to develop between the MCs is sweet and I totally loved it!

Review: This is a short and interesting Christmas short. I really do enjoy Kim Fielding’s writing and though I didn’t love this book, I still enjoyed the brief suspension of disbelief.

Grant is spending Christmas in Hawaii for the wedding of his brother. While Grant is happy enough to be there, he is jealous of the love that his brother and soon-to-be brother-in-law have. That is when Grant meets a mysterious man who apparently goes by multiple names, depending on the time of year. The man is a god who is stuck in a perpetual loop of death and rebirth.

The mythology aspect involved and with Hawaii as a setting brought to mind for me the books by AJ Llewellyn. If nothing else, I felt that this story needed to be longer – or something – because really the only thing missing for me was actually getting a proper hold on Grant’s emotions, as well as getting to know the mysterious god he meets. Also if you’re after a HEA ended in your Christmas story, you’re going to have to be satisfied with a HFN. I was really left with mixed feelings by the end of this one.

Kim Fielding Banner

Kim Fielding chats about “Anyplace Else”

A couple of things inspired me to write this story.

One was the notion that even the most beautiful place in the world is miserable for someone who’s not happy with the direction their life has taken.

Most of this story takes place in Hawaii, a place I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few times. It is paradise. Friendly people, gorgeous scenery, perfect weather, delicious foods. Really, it almost seems magical sometimes. On my last visit we went out on a catamaran, and a pod of spinner dolphins hung out with us for about 20 minutes. They were close enough to splash us. Plus my entire family got along perfectly—staying in a small space—for 10 days. A miracle!

But what if, like Grant, I’d vacationed in Hawaii during a time when my personal life was at a standstill and my work life was a grind? It might have taken some extra island enchantment to cheer me up.

My other inspiration was my musings on the solstice. That time of year is important in many religions, both ancient and modern, and rebirth is often a theme in the holidays celebrated then. Which makes sense—the year is dying, the sun making its briefest appearance of all. But then the next day begins the new year, and the sun starts to regain its ascendency over night.

So, throw together those elements—a life going nowhere, a chance for renewal, and a magical location—and that’s how you get “Anyplace Else.”

Review: I have not had a chance to read any of this author’s works, and I can tell you that after reading this story, I am definitely going to be looking him up.  Sometimes when you are dealing with Christmas it gets a bit down.  The stories are pretty much the same, even if the words are different.  This author has written a story that fulfils many Christmas dreams.  It shows what Christmas is really about.

Laurence lost his family when he was a child and got mixed up with a guy that was horrible to say the least.  He lost his spirit along the way and made sure everyone knew it.  He has one friend who stays by his side.  However this Christmas he has been put into a position he absolutely hates.  He is to help with the Christmas Charity committee.  His partner is a surprise though; it would seem Nick loves everything about the holidays.  Let’s just say, Laurence is going to get the best gift ever.  For you to find out what happens… pick up the book.

I have always worked Christmas and when my children were kids, I would go all out getting them everything they wanted and then some.  However to me, it was just another day and it seems to just stick like that.  With the kids all gone, it is just me so I always think work might just fill up the day.  Now I do like to listen to the Christmas songs, I don’t really do anything more.  After reading this story though, I realize that there are more things out there that can be done.  It is the season to be giving, instead of receiving and that makes this story just perfect to me.

I would definitely recommend you read this book, because it will bring a twinkle to your eye if not a tear.  Have a great Christmas and trust me this is the book for you.

Blurb:  Creatures of the Night and Santa’s Christmas duties don’t mix. Every myth and bedtime story tells you so.

But on Christmas Eve, when the Elves walked off the job over pension rights, it was time for me—Irwin, the only vampire on Santa’s payroll, despite recent diversity initiatives—and my trusty team to help out. Just deliver a few parcels, Santa asked me. Just help out on your local patch. Just for one night.

Armed with my reluctance to face all that human sentimentality, and accompanied by a wise-cracking werewolf and an unruly fairy with a taste for vodka, I did my best. Honest.
But we were heading for disaster until I came face-to-face with cute babysitter Benny. It’s Santa’s Number One Rule—no interaction with the clients. But Benny somehow managed to upset my appetite, inflame my libido, and restore my faith in the Christmas spirit, with one cheeky smile and a tasty body piercing.

mm-good-book-reviews-giveaway-bah-humbug-fbbanner-dsp

Hey everyone! I’m just here today to give you the heads up for MM Good Book Reviews upcoming month long giveaway which starts on the 1st December 2016.

MM Good Book Reviews has asked each of the Bah Humbug Advent Calendar authors to submit a question which you readers will be able to answer. And most of them agreed! So throughout the month of December EVERY DAY we’ll have a review from the Bah Humbug Advent and the books author will ask a question… all you have to do is to answer the question in the comments for that review.

What will you win? Well I’m feeling very generous this year so MM Good Book Reviews has the most AMAZING prizes… especially for those of you who will be feeling the pennies pinching in the New Year! 4th & 3rd prizes are $25 Dreamspinner Press Credits, 2nd prize will be $50 Dreamspinner Press Credits and 1st prize is an astounding $100 Dreamspinner Press Credits!

I know you’re thinking ‘what’s the catch’. Let me assure you there’s no catch whatsoever other than needing a Dreamspinner Press account if you win, oh and needing to get the answers correct 😉

The best thing about the giveaway is… there’s 31 chances to win! Yep if you comment on every Bah Humbug review with the correct answers then your name will be pinned 31 times to the corkboard (darts! It’s gonna be so fun on New Years Day) if you get 26 correct answers then your name will be pinned 26 times on the corkboard, easy.

And while it would be nice if you visited us every day in December you don’t have to, that’s right you could just visit once a week or if you’re really pushed for time then just once on the 31st Dec, I’ll be creating a page with all the links to the reviews and questions so you won’t have to miss any 🙂

So guys why don’t you nip over to Dreamspinner Press, check out the Bah Humbug Advent and take a look at the stories that have made me feel super generous this year <3

PI Jackson Rivers grew up on the mean streets of Del Paso Heights—and he doesn’t trust cops, even though he was one. When the man he thinks of as his brother is accused of killing a police officer in an obviously doctored crime, Jackson will move heaven and earth to keep Kaden and his family safe.

Defense attorney Ellery Cramer grew up with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, but that hasn’t stopped him from crushing on street-smart, swaggering Jackson Rivers for the past six years. But when Jackson asks for his help defending Kaden Cameron, Ellery is out of his depth—and not just with guarded, prickly Jackson. Kaden wasn’t just framed, he was framed by crooked cops, and the conspiracy goes higher than Ellery dares reach—and deep into Jackson’s troubled past.

Both men are soon enmeshed in the mystery of who killed the cop in the minimart, and engaged in a race against time to clear Kaden’s name. But when the mystery is solved and the bullets stop flying, they’ll have to deal with their personal complications… and an attraction that’s spiraled out of control.

Anthology - A More Perfect Union cover s

A More Perfect Union

(Anthology)
by

B.G. Thomas, J. Scott Coatsworth, Jamie Fessenden, Michael Murphy

On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court of the United States made a monumental decision, and at long last, marriage equality became the law of the land. That ruling made history, and now gay and lesbian Americans will grow up in a country where they will never be denied the right to marry the person they love.

But what about the gay men who waited and wondered all of their lives if the day would ever come when they could stand beside the person they love and say “I do”?

Here, four accomplished authors—married gay men—offer their take on that question as they explore same-sex relationships, love, and matrimony. Men who thought legal marriage was aright they would never have. Men who, unbelievably, now stand legally joined with the men they love. With this book, they share the magic and excitement of dreams that came true—in tales of fantasy and romance with a dose of their personal experiences in the mix.

To commemorate the anniversary of full marriage equality in the US, this anthology celebrates the idea of marriage itself—and the universal truth of it that applies to us all, gay or straight.

Someday, by B.G. Thomas

Lucas Arrowood is walking to school on his first day of kindergarten when he meets Dalton Churchill—a boy who stops and helps him tie his shoe. He knows from that moment he is going to marry that boy one day.  “Boys can’t marry other boys,” his mother explains, but that doesn’t stop Lucas. He knows what he wants.

He and Dalton become best friends—and then, no matter how much he resists, Dalton falls in love with Lucas. Dalton’s very conservative family can’t accept that their boy loves another boy, but finally Dalton stands up for love and for Lucas. Still, he declares he won’t marry Lucas until it is legal everywhere. He hates the “Commitment Ceremonies” gay men have. They aren’t the real thing. Why bother?

So Lucas waits for his day. The day same-sex marriage finally becomes legal and he can be joined forever with the love of his life.

Flames, by J. Scott Coatsworth

Alex and Gio had a big fight, and Alex ran away. Then a fire at home destroyed the life they had built together, and threatened to take Gio away from him.

Alex had always thought love was enough to keep them together. Why did they need wedding rings or legal certificates? But now, with Gio lost in a coma, his mother has banished Alex from his side.

What if Alex’s voice is the only thing that can bring Gio back from the brink? Their memories are all Gio has left, and the urge to just let go is getting stronger.

Still, nothing can keep Alex from Gio’s side. If it’s against the rules, he’ll break them. In stolen moments alone together, Alex fights to bring him back, one memory at a time.

Destined, by Jamie Fessenden

When Jay and Wallace first meet at an LGBTQ group, they have no idea they’ll be dating six years later. In fact, they quickly forget each other’s names. But although fate continues to throw them together, the timing is never quite right. Finally they’re both single and  realize they want to be together… but now they can’t find each other! With determination and the help of mutual friends, Jay and Wallace can finally pursue the relationship they’ve both wanted for so long.

It’s only the beginning of the battles they’ll face to build a life together.

From disapproving family members all the way to the state legislature, Jay and Wallace’s road to happily ever after is littered with obstacles. But they’ve come too far to give up the fight.

Jeordi and Tom, by Michael Murphy

Living as an open, loving gay couple in the rural South isn’t easy—even today.

When Jeordi and Tom move in together and come out to their families, Jeordi’s family does not take the news especially well. When yelling doesn’t work, they send in one sibling after another to try to separate the couple. When that fails, they call out their pastor to help Jeordi see the error of his ways. But Jeordi’s love for Tom is greater than anything they throw at them.

When an accident sends Jeordi to the hospital, his family goes too far when they try to keep Tom from visiting his partner. Jeordi and Tom are determined to do everything in their power to gain legal protection so this can never happen again. But when a bigoted county clerk refuses to issue them a marriage license, Jeordi decides a big, bold effort is called for, which is precisely what he sets in moVon so no one can ever separate him from Tom again.
