Ten Mile Bottom

by

Teodora Kostova

Hitting rock bottom is just the beginning…

I’m a son, a brother, a friend.
A writer.
An addict.
Dead.
Cardiac arrest isn’t enough to keep me dead, though. The doctors brought me back, but for what?

At twenty four I’ve already achieved what most people do in a life time. I’m a successful author, own a flat in the heart of London and drive my dream sports car.

Or at least that’s what people see.

Once the spotlight fades, I’m left alone with my overactive mind, alcohol and drugs the only way to quiet down the noise.

Until an overdose nearly kills me and drags everyone I love down with me.

With the help of my best friend, I leave London and its toxic influence behind, moving to a small town in the outskirts of Cambridge to try and put my life back together again.

If only it were that easy.

Some kids’ heads are in the clouds. Harriet Little’s head is in outer space.

In 1950s America, everyone is expected to come out of a cookie-cutter mold. But Harriet prefers the people who don’t, like her communist-sympathizer father and her best friend Jackie, a tomboy who bucks the school dress code of skirts and blouses in favor of T-shirts and blue jeans. Harriet realizes she’s also different when she starts to swoon over Rosemary Clooney instead of Rock Hudson—and finds Sputnik and sci-fi more fascinating than sock hops.

Before long, Harriet is secretly dating the most popular girl in the school. But she soon learns that real love needs a stronger foundation than frilly dresses and feminine wiles.

Blurb: Men found him attractive, interesting even. He was like a fascinating experiment gone wrong that men liked to investigate. He’d get a date – or two, if he was lucky – but it wasn’t long before Brian’s darkness showed, and the men were running from him.

Brian King was honorably discharged from the United States Navy five years ago. He’d left with the highest honors a man can receive in his country, but he’d paid the ultimate price to earn them. He was considered one of the best; an Intelligence Officer in a Joint Special Operations Delta team that’d been a twelve-man wrecking crew. They’d thought they were invincible… until they weren’t. Brian was the only member that survived the ambush. He survived ten months of pain, of torture, only to emerge on the other side a warrior. A POW survivor. He’d returned home with all his limbs, his right mind, and with his only brother Ford, at his side. But, one thing had been lost, maybe for good… his voice.

Now, being a bounty hunter is Brian’s only means to satisfy his need to calculate, track, and capture. His only outlet to the stress caused by his silence. He was good at what he did. But, all work and no play for a forty-four year old man was taking its toll. Brian wasn’t a faulty experiment. He missed companionship, he missed communicating. So, when he met Sway Hamilton – in the most unconventional means – he’d been surprised at his special way of understanding Brian’s every look… and touch.

Sway grew up in the rough part of ATL, trailing behind his twin brother Stanton and his best friend, Dana. He and his brother had a bond only twins could understand. So when Stanton’s life was taken during their sophomore year in college, Sway didn’t think he’d ever recover. He finally finished school, got his masters in nursing, worked hard, and focused on taking care of his mother. However, Sway knew there was more to life than heartache, and caring for others. There had to be. But he didn’t know what any of those things were until he met a dark hunter that blew his mind… and the intense man had never uttered a single word.

Brian and Sway can feel the powerful connection between them. It was there from the start—but both of them have battled with loss and anguish for so long, neither understand that love can ease all of it. Do they have the courage to battle through it together? Sway has to learn to trust in love, and Brian has to believe that Sway will always understand him even if he never speaks again.

Review: This novel is part of a series but can be read as a standalone. Although I would read the first book first, otherwise questions arise on the other sexy men. I hate to admit that you can guess what the book is like and how it will end just by reading the blurb. So I am glad that I never read it till now.

I have not read but a couple of books by this author so I was quite surprised by this book. It makes me want to go read the first book. Now the book is a bit long winded but is still quite a enjoyable read. The characters are quite sexy, charming and have just a bit of a troubled past. The plot is solid and very strong, just like the characters.

Brian is a retired navy seal who has had a rough time. He had been taken prisoner along with his partner, but his team was killed in front of him. He never said a word, and it followed him even after his brother rescued him. He was mute but one of the best damn hunters the bounty business had. His personal life however was not so good. They would see his dark side and run. Just as the sexy man at his brothers.

Sway is one hell of a nurse and has a wonderful life. His past was hard but he has overcome quite abit, that is until he meets Brian. He sees the sexy man for what he is, but it still takes him time to come to terms with everything. Danger and excitement are just a bit of what you get with this story. These are two very strong willed men and their love is just as strong.

Now this book like I said above is very long winded but very good. It has quite a bit in it, that I felt could have been left out. To long a story and I tend to loose interest real fast, but it was enjoyable and quite fun. I liked the characters quite a bit and can’t wait to read the previous books in this series.

If the rest of this author’s work turns out like this book, then I can see myself reading more.

Review: I am reading this after already having read the first of the series, and so my judgment is primarily as a series rather than standalone. Again: solid, polished writing that is in no need of editing.

The pairings are a rich blushing virgin, and a rich inventor who wants to be spanked because apparently that absolves him of his crimes. Not my type, but I know plenty of readers enjoy that.

However, we get into racial description problems right from page 1. “Dark” skin is not really descriptive beyond “not white” and has been a lazy skin descriptor of lighter folk for far too long – what “dark” means to white, white-passing, and other pale-skinned people is quite different than what is “dark” to readers who are not.

That said, I’m glad to see someone who’s not light-skinned being portrayed attractively, however briefly. I just wish it wasn’t in a stereotypically servile role, especially when there are no other characters of his portrayed race represented in higher/more respected capacities.

The clinical language used for Joon’s robotic perceptions of sex are immersive, and at points help to show a shift in demeanor.

I’m unnerved that this is the second book in a row describing a blue-eyed, Caucasian man as the type of man virtually everyone finds most desirable. Again, we have an Asian patron fawning over a constructed white guy who is beautiful because he is as white as can be. Joon too engages in this type of behavior, absolutely smitten with a white guy and his lovingly described pale skin. There is a major plot point which only further ‘enhances’ this kind of narrative, which I won’t spoil here. I understand internalized racism; it’s just gutting to see it in action.

This work is less vanilla than the last. BDSM is prevalent, as are multiple partners. Prostitution and promiscuity is normalized in this world, to the point anyone not perusing both frequently is considered eccentric.

Though it’s anime science full-throttle, the transition from robot to human reads as metaphorical to me: as someone in a highly dissociated state coming to terms with themself, their emotions and their mortality.

Enjoyed a brief nod to previous characters from the prior work without making things not make sense.

Review: The cat clan has many harsh rules and Steve seems to break many of them. He is not as submissive as they want and he decided to help a human in need. It is a punishment of death, but he survived. He found a place to hide and in his mind to die. However something made him want to live. The place he found to hide just so happened to be a ex-con in the shape of a werebear. A werebear who was almost feral and rogue. It seems he might just save the bear also.

Damon has spent five years in a shifter prison for murder. The problem was he didn’t kill anyone, his little brother had. He had lost a part of himself in there, and now he knew he was going out of control. That is until he saves a little tabby shifter.

I have not read but a few books by this author, so I wasn’t to sure what to expect. He has a few weak spots in it and the connection was not felt between me and the characters very well. However it is a very entertaining story and I hope that the next book gets better. It has great potential to be pretty amazing. It is unique and very surprising. I am afraid that the omega and the way the others treat them was the same but they might have a way out.

I was quite surprised with it and did enjoy the book.

Review: This is way higher brow than I was expecting for robot sex. I’m impressed. This book is polished, the prose flows well, and the story is told in a straightforward manner.

Surprisingly realistic world.

Sex scenes are refreshingly realistic, especially regarding stamina after, ahem, long in-betweens.

There are clever turns in this, as well as some uncomfortable levels of soul-searching. Bring it.
I was disappointed by the “tidiness,” so to say, of medical procedures and how they were evaluated, but I think that says a lot about how much Suzukawa has already built my expectations up for realism in a genre notorious for bumrushing things.

Hyperfocusing on genitalia as a metaphor for humanity fell flat, again, because Suzukawa has already shown off a knack for finer details and subtlety.

All in all, a decent read for cis gays.

Reviewer: Shorty

Review: I really enjoyed this story despite not really knowing exactly what the characters shift into. The dissension between the Misiq and the Chinjoka tribes is deadly even though at one point they used to co exist. This rift is the result of a devastating plague that has decimated both tribes with the Misiq blaming the Chinjoka.

Gyam, Dhala and Askari were great characters with each unique gifts within their tribe. i found the castes to be intriguing and fascinating. The magical and paranormal aspects of the story were a huge plus for me. The battle scenes between the tribes were ferocious and deadly.

Ena, a misiq, was an enigma once he is rescued from certain death. I liked that he tried to protect the chinjoka at the most crucial of times. Even though he did put himself in danger of being found out more than once. The chemistry between these two couples was electric yet sweet.

I truly enjoyed this amazing detailed journey in a land so different from now. The lush landscapes to the rivers and streams plus the different customs of each tribe were fascinating. I am looking forward to reading more in this fantastic series.

Highly recommended.

Blurb: Detective Dakar Rhodes is an alpha wolf shifter who’s short on sleep and patience. Called to yet another crime scene, definitely the work of a serial killer, he’s shocked to learn the Pedace Police Department has a Necromancer as a consultant. Considering he’d moved to Pedace because of the lack of a coven in the area, he wasn’t pleased with the new development. His previous dealings with magic users never ended well. But when ordered to show the consultant the respect befitting his position, Dakar bites his tongue and longs for a swift conclusion to the case.

Necromancer Prince Sebastian York, or Sy to his friends, has a real issue with people. He doesn’t like or trust them, but because of his position, he has to deal with them. Dead people are so much easier – at least they don’t want anything from him. But Sy has been raised to do his duty and when he’s called to a crime scene, he doesn’t expect anything much to happen beyond talking to a few spirits. The last thing he thought he’d find is a wolf shifter claiming to be his mate.

One short meeting has a wealth of repercussions. Finding a serial killer is easy; coping with relationships is anything but. Demons, journalists, long held grudges and a familiar with loyalty issues all combine to make for a hectic time. It’s a case of one step forward, two steps back for Dakar and Sy, but when evil comes calling will they be able to rely on each other for a chance at an HEA?

Reviewer: Lisa

Review: This story is the first in a planned trilogy based on the two main characters. This book can be read as a standalone, but when you get to the end you will see that it would be better read all together.

I came across Lisa not to long ago, but it was easy to see why she would not only be a favorite author of mine but an auto buy on her books. Now normally I have not been a fan of necromancers, but the way Lisa tells this story, makes me rethink that thought. My attention was caught from the very beginning and kept all the way to the end. It gave me everything I could ask for in a story. Danger, hot sex, surprise, tender looks and some major excitement.

Sy is a necromancer and with one look, well lets just say he looks like a sexy boy toy. At least that is what the detective at the scene of a horrible murder thought. Can you imagine Dakar’s surprise when he finds out that Sy is the one he had asked for. Now all he has to do is to learn to think before he speaks, for the sexy young man is his mate. Dakar is one hell of a wolf shifter and detective but he sure has a way to go to being a good mate.

Sy has two hours a day, three days a week that he spends with people. Otherwise he is usually in the library with his nose in a book. His protector and best friend holds him to a deal on going out and talking to people, but he isn’t to sure how to talk to his mate. Someone is killing young men and stealing their heats and there is going to be some big surprises in store.

This book was amazing and I can’t wait to get book two. If I chose a book by its title, I would have not even bothered looking at this book. However when I realized who the author was, I knew I was going to have my head stuck in it. This series is going to be off the charts big hit.

I had a lot of fun with it and would guarantee that you will also.

Blurb: “Hate the player, love the game…or was that the other way around?”

Research biologist Neil Parkinson had to give up a lot in pursuit of his Ph.D–his friends, his music, his home town–but the one thing he managed to hang on to was Legendary Pairs, the hyper-competitive collectible card game that has propelled so many nerds just like him to fame and fortune. With a new job in a new city, loneliness drives him out of his apartment and into The Ogre’s Den–a haven for local players, amateur and pro alike. Neil never aspired to be a professional gamer, but that was before he met Robin.

“Why even play, if you don’t play to win?”

Robin Abboud is cocky, brash, argumentative…and absolutely gorgeous. He may be a lowly caterer with a crappy car, but this game is the one place where he’s a top dog, and boy does he know it. Robin’s end-game goal is to play in the Legendary Pairs Pro Tour; he’s got the skill to do it, and from the moment he meets Neil, he’s convinced Neil does too. His flirty bravado gets under Neil’s skin like nothing else, but he runs so hot-and-cold that Neil can’t figure out if the two of them are competitors, friends…or something more.

“Don’t tell me this is just a game to you. I know better.”

When Robin convinces Neil to join him on a road trip to a major tournament, there’s more on the line than just the cash prize. Even as the two of them clash on the field of the tournament, Neil’s feelings for Robin are growing impossible to ignore. But could Robin ever feel the same way? The longer they spend together, the more Neil risks showing his whole hand. Is a perfect match in the cards for these two, or will their in-game rivalry tear them apart?

Perfect Game is a 25,000 word stand-alone romance novella with lots of heat, deliciously nerdy sweetness, and a happily-ever-after ending with no cliffhangers.

Reviewer: Napoleon A. Chase

Review: I chose this book because I’m a nerd and because I’m forever chasing that rare black-haired, brown-eyed protagonist.

This book instantly hits the problem many books hit when describing someone of a race that is not your own: “He looked ambiguously ethnic in a faintly Middle Eastern way, with deep olive-tan skin, dark hair and eyes, and a hint of a hook nose that drew the eye naturally…”
“Ethnic” is a poorly named grocery aisle, not a human being.

That said: mixed race Middle Eastern guy. Go on.

Chemistry is established immediately, which I dig. Gamer dynamic is accurate. Neil’s your typical stuffed-in-lockers variety of nerd; Robin comes off as a little Gary-Stuish since we pan into him Evil Masterminding a win against another competent player with no suggestion that there’s some element of chance to a card game.

Robin’s showing off strikes the right chords. I might have enjoyed this novel more if it had been written from his perspective.

Neil could be rewritten easily into a cis straight girl, which was disappointing but par for the course.
If you enjoy the smell of fandom tropes, this author has the cologne for you.

There were parts I enjoyed that I‘ve been robbed of due to layers of racism that just get worse and worse as the book goes on.

[SPOILERS]
It was super creepy to have the one PoC painted as a guy without any real prospects, just one – and then sees that wiped out by the random white guy he brings along. Then we get to see him have an absolutely childish tantrum while Neil plays the Arbiter of Rationality White Guy role that all too often happens whenever an argument, no matter how valid, occurs between PoC and white people who can’t even agree that grass is usually green.

This particular brand of “stupid and childish” is one that gets thrown at Middle Eastern guys almost as often as it gets thrown at black guys.

I ended up reading reviews to see if there was any hint of it coming back from this. There wasn’t. Gave up reading in the beginning of the make-up sex scene in which Robin is made to grovel for being a bad little boy.

In the summer of 1780, on the tiny island of Merryapple, burly fisherman Robin Shipp lives a simple, quiet life in a bustling harbour town where most of the residents dislike him due to the actions of his father. With a hurricane approaching, he nonetheless convinces the villagers to take shelter in the one place big enough to hold them all—the ancient, labyrinthine tavern named the Moth & Moon.

While trapped with his neighbours during the raging storm, Robin inadvertently confronts more than the weather, and the results could change everything.

by

Felice Stevens

Beneath the famous Brooklyn landmark, love is hidden but not denied: All his life, Alexi Kharpov has dreamed of traveling to unknown exciting places instead of working at his family’s frozen custard stand on the famous Coney Island boardwalk. Every year is the same until a gorgeous man picks a spot in front of his stand to sing, captivating him with his beautiful voice. After two summers of listening, it might finally be time for him to cross that boardwalk and take a chance.

Opera singer Cameron Maxwell has traveled the world, but the sight of the beautiful man serving custard to tourists touches his heart like nothing ever has before. A summer fling might be exactly what he needs to put his problems out of his mind, but the last thing Cam expects is to want the summer to last forever.

It’s a season of discovery for both men who learn to dig deep within their heads and hearts to decide whether secrets old and new should remain buried, or if love is too important to keep hidden under the boardwalk.

Blurb: Cole is a nobody. A nothing. He doesn’t want to be seen. And he doesn’t want to be heard. A life of torture and abuse makes it hard, and frightening, to be noticed. He’d rather go unseen.

The dragons came and freed him, and he was happy when none wanted him for a mate, but then he came along. Evzen is a strange man. Handsome, scarred Evzen is powerful and intimidating, and yet Cole can’t stay away from him. Even though he fears the pleasure Evzen can give, he is completely under the man’s spell and at his mercy.

Evzen will teach the small shifter what it’s like to really live, because only Cole can give that to him in return. After the death of his mate, Evzen wants this second chance, though someone in his own clan is plotting against him and his new happiness, with Cole as their primary target.

Review: Evzen was the leader of the dragons that join with Seth’s dragons. He takes one look at cute Cole and pursues him but Cole is terrified of everyone after the abuse he suffered at the hands of the vampires. I liked how even though Evzen wanted Cole he took the time to ensure and do everything possible to convince Cole he was not in danger from him.

Some of Evzen’s dragons do not approve and one even attacks Cole. I felt their was a lack of communication to Cole on Evzen’s part as he should have told him not everyone was happy with them being mates. A great addition to the series.

Highly recommended.

Review: A magical story about a prince, Anwyll, who is soon to become king, who finds his consort among the commoners. Pedr is a gardener from generations of the beginning when the people fled their home world from a tyrannical reign.

Anwyll was so determined to to keep Pedr despite what tradition says. I loved how thee two interacted and talked to one another. Pedr was extremely knowledgeable about all things regarding plants. I loved his gift for the king and the tale that is told to how it came about years before.

The celebration was magical and felt like it was a fairytale come to life.

Awesome read.
