Blyd and Pearce

by

Kim Fielding

Born into poverty and orphaned young, Daveth Blyd had one chance for success when his fighting prowess earned him a place in the Tangye city guard—a place he lost to false accusations of theft. Now he scrapes out a living searching for wayward spouses and missing children. When a nobleman offers him a small fortune to find an entertainer who’s stolen a ring, Daveth takes the case.

While Jory Pearce may or may not be a thief, he certainly can’t be trusted. But, enchanted by Jory’s beauty and haunting voice, Daveth soon finds himself caught in the middle of a conspiracy. As he searches desperately for answers, he realizes that he’s also falling for Jory. The two men face river wraiths, assassins, a necromancer, and a talking head that could be Daveth’s salvation on their quest for the truth. But with everyone’s integrity in question and Death eager to dance, Daveth will need more than sorcery to survive.

Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens with Dianne Hartsock & Kim Fielding!

Chechnya Blog TourReaders & Writers for LGBT Chechens is a group of people raising money for organizations working directly with gay men and other persecuted LGBT people from Chechnya and the northern Caucasus. We do this through direct donations, donating royalties to these charitable organizations, and an online auction to be held May 5–13.

The group started out with a Facebook conversation between authors Dale Cameron Lowry and Olivia Helling in mid-April, after news of the targeted imprisonment, torture and executions of gay men started coming out of Chechnya. Other authors quickly got involved, and the effort snowballed from there.

Chechnya bt 1

Dianne Hartsock, a romance and speculative fiction author, has donated a set of two signed paperbacks to the charity auction. Here, she talks about why she decided to get involved:

“As a believer in human rights for all, I was horrified and heartbroken to realize what is happening in Chechnya. At first I was shocked, which quickly turned to a feeling of grief and helplessness. Participating in Readers & Writers for LGBT Chechens has given me the opportunity to help in a small way. If all of us take part, we can make a difference.”

Author Kim Fielding, who donated a set of three paperbacks and a t-shirt to the auction, adds,

“I got involved because it’s a small way I can contribute to the fight against brutality. As part of my day job, I’ve been studying hate crime for over two decades, and I’m well aware of how bad things can get. I think the fight against bias and violence is eternal, but every battle counts.”

Blurb: Small but mighty—that could be Detective Nevin Ng’s motto. Now a dedicated member of the Portland Police Bureau, he didn’t let a tough start in life stop him from protecting those in need. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, and he doesn’t do relationships. Until he responds to the severe beating of a senior citizen and meets the victim’s bow-tied, wealthy landlord.

Property manager and developer Colin Westwood grew up with all the things Nevin never had, like plenty of money and a supportive, loving family. Too supportive, perhaps, since his childhood illness has left his parents unwilling to admit he’s a strong, grown man. Colin does do relationships, but they never work out. Now he’s thinking maybe he won’t just go with the flow. Maybe it’s time to try something more exciting. But being a witness to a terrible crime—or two—was more than he bargained for.

Despite their differences, Colin and Nevin discover that sparks fly when they’re together. But sparks are short-lived, dampened by the advent of brutal crimes, and Colin and Nevin have seemingly little in common. The question is whether they have the heart to build something lasting.

Review: I fell in love with foul-mouthed, crabby, moody and intense Detective Nevin Ng. I love this story, everything about it is simply perfect; intense, sexy as hell, not overly dramatic but captivating nonetheless. Even though it’s the second book in the Love Can’t Series, it can be read as a standalone without any problems. To be honest, it took me a while to remember details about the first book (I cheated, I went and read my review) and I had no trouble keeping up with Nevin and Colin’s story.

Nevin and Colin are as different as fire and water; Colin grew up as the only child of a relatively rich family, and despite his health problems, he’s had a happy childhood. His parents love and accept him and want nothing but the best for Colin. Nevin grew up without knowing who his father is and with the knowledge that his mother didn’t love him enough to keep him. Abandoned at a young age, Nevin is the product of our faulty foster care system; he’s closed off and afraid to make emotional connections with the men and women he fucks, and the only important people in his life are Jeremy (Germy, the main character from book 1) and Ford, Nevin’s foster brother.

Nevin is a fuck-em-and-leave-em kind of guy, while Colin is a monogamist who’s been dreaming about his wedding since he was a child. Nevin is selfish, prickly as a porcupine; rude and brooding, but underneath that armor hides a heart of gold. Colin is caring and loves volunteering his time talking to lonely older LGBT people. But despite their differences, Nevin and Colin are a match made in heaven. If there ever was a couple made for each other, these two are IT! I loved every single moment, every single interaction, but what I love the most was seeing Nevin fall in love with Leg (Colin’s cat) and Colin.

Like in the first book, there’s a mystery plot in this book as well, but it doesn’t take the focus away from Nevin and Colin. Kim Fielding is one of my favorite authors and I know she can never disappoint me; this book is even more proof that Kim Fielding and I are a match. This book is lovely!

Review: This is a short and interesting Christmas short. I really do enjoy Kim Fielding’s writing and though I didn’t love this book, I still enjoyed the brief suspension of disbelief.

Grant is spending Christmas in Hawaii for the wedding of his brother. While Grant is happy enough to be there, he is jealous of the love that his brother and soon-to-be brother-in-law have. That is when Grant meets a mysterious man who apparently goes by multiple names, depending on the time of year. The man is a god who is stuck in a perpetual loop of death and rebirth.

The mythology aspect involved and with Hawaii as a setting brought to mind for me the books by AJ Llewellyn. If nothing else, I felt that this story needed to be longer – or something – because really the only thing missing for me was actually getting a proper hold on Grant’s emotions, as well as getting to know the mysterious god he meets. Also if you’re after a HEA ended in your Christmas story, you’re going to have to be satisfied with a HFN. I was really left with mixed feelings by the end of this one.

Kim Fielding Banner

Kim Fielding chats about “Anyplace Else”

A couple of things inspired me to write this story.

One was the notion that even the most beautiful place in the world is miserable for someone who’s not happy with the direction their life has taken.

Most of this story takes place in Hawaii, a place I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few times. It is paradise. Friendly people, gorgeous scenery, perfect weather, delicious foods. Really, it almost seems magical sometimes. On my last visit we went out on a catamaran, and a pod of spinner dolphins hung out with us for about 20 minutes. They were close enough to splash us. Plus my entire family got along perfectly—staying in a small space—for 10 days. A miracle!

But what if, like Grant, I’d vacationed in Hawaii during a time when my personal life was at a standstill and my work life was a grind? It might have taken some extra island enchantment to cheer me up.

My other inspiration was my musings on the solstice. That time of year is important in many religions, both ancient and modern, and rebirth is often a theme in the holidays celebrated then. Which makes sense—the year is dying, the sun making its briefest appearance of all. But then the next day begins the new year, and the sun starts to regain its ascendency over night.

So, throw together those elements—a life going nowhere, a chance for renewal, and a magical location—and that’s how you get “Anyplace Else.”

Review: This is the third book in the Ennek series. Ennek and Miner have finally come home. Only to find things have changed since they have been gone. It is a struggle to accept the changes of this new society while at the same time dealing with their own fears.

It was a wonderfully written, if not slow, ending to an intriguing story. I loved seeing how both the MC’s interacted with each other and others. They faced foes head-on and struggled to make a life for their selves in a world where nothing is certain.

As the story progressed I hoped for Ennek and Miner’s chance to live a peaceful life without all the drama that usually ended up happening. All in all it was a great ending to a really good trilogy.

Great read.

Blurb: Kyle Green is on top of the world. He and Matt have been together for ten years, and—as the voice of Ecos, the wildly popular anime character—Kyle is treated like a rock star in anime circles. But in an instant, a stroke leaves him blind. When photographer Matt gets the opportunity of a lifetime, Kyle reexamines their relationship, discovers it has been a safety net rather than a true romance, and sets Matt free to pursue his dream. Kyle’s life and career as he knew them are gone, and he must now find the courage and creativity to draft a new plan.

After being away for fifteen years, Seth Caplan comes home to Chicago to care for his mother and to partner with a small start-up tech company. He and Kyle meet after Kyle’s collision with a child’s sidewalk toy, and they hit it off. Kyle wants to get back into running, and Seth becomes his guide. Review: I’ve never heard of Venona Keyes before, but I’m a big fan of Kim Fielding and I’ll read anything she writes. I was surprised it took me a while to get into this book, because usually Kim Fielding’s writing sucks me right in, so I blame it on the collaboration. But once I got into it, it managed to keep my attention.

Kyle’s world is turned upside down after a freak of nature: a stroke that leaves him with Riddoch syndrome, which only allows him to see objects in movement. I haven’t heard much about this syndrome, but it made sense to me and I liked how it was presented to us without making me feel like I’m taking lessons in medical school. Kyle is no longer able to do his job as the voice of Ecos, a very popular anime character, breaks up the relationship with his longtime boyfriend Matt, and finds ways to accept his new situation and move forward.

I loved how despite the shitty situation, Kyle avoided turning into a bitter asshole. He accepted help and worked hard to improve the quality of his new life, so when given the chance to resume running with a running guide, he takes it. Seth Caplan moved back to Chicago to take care of his mother who suffers of dementia and to partner with a small tech company. Seth and Kyle hit it right off and they become good friends, but neither of them is looking for a relationship. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to ignore the attraction between them.

Let me tell you this isn’t exactly a steamy book, and it takes forever to get to the lonely little sex scene. But somehow this kind of worked, because the focus of this story is Kyle taking charge of his life again. There are dates and romance, but there’s no explosive chemistry anywhere to be seen.

I also loved how Kyle’s relationship with Matt didn’t become bitter and hateful. They both realized they’ve always been more friends than lovers, and remained good friends even after they ended their relationship. We even get to see Kyle and Seth together with Matt and his new boyfriend, which made me stupidly happy.

The HEA is sweet and strong and beautiful and full of hope. Overall this was a pretty great book!

These questions are about to be answered, but those who discover the truth might wish they had never asked. On the other hand, some might find salvation in visitors from other planets. For while some aliens are hostile, others are benevolent. Some have little in common with humans, but for others, the need for love and acceptance is universal. Review: This is a continuation of Ennek and Miner’s journey that began in Stasis.

Ennek and Miner go on an adventure to find freedom from those in their homeland who would have them under their thumbs. This story is Miner’s.

His revelations are heart-breaking. But he is determined to overcome his past and be the best man he can for Ennek. Ennek struggles to control his newfound powers as wizard.

These two are constantly on the move traveling from place to place and encountering many dangers in their quest for freedom and a life free to be together. I love the chemistry and commitment these two characters show each other. With the journey ahead they will need that strong bond as the journey is perilous.

I loved that the story spans several places as opposed to one. The details of the journey were amazing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Blurb: Praesidium is the most prosperous city-state in the world, due not only to its location at the mouth of a great bay but also to its strict laws, stringently enforced. Ordinary criminals become bond-slaves, but the worst punishment—to be suspended in a dreamless frozen state known as Stasis—is doled out by the wizard and reserved for only the most serious of traitors.

Ennek is the youngest son of Praesidium’s strict Chief. Though now a successful portmaster, Ennek grew up without much of a purpose, unable to fulfill his true desires and always skating on the edge of the law. But he is also haunted by the plight of one man, Miner, a prisoner for whom Stasis appears to be a truly horrible fate. If Ennek is to save Miner, he must explore Praesidium’s deepest secrets as well as his own.

Review: Strange, yet interesting book. Stasis is where criminals are put to sleep until enough time has gone by then they are woken up and forced to become slaves. I had a huge problem with this myself. The prisoners are being punished by being put into stasis so I did not understand why when they were woken up they were forced to become slaves. I do not approve of slavery in any way, shape or form.

Ennek does not agree with the way things are, yet at the same time he really is not in a position to change anything. He becomes interested in a prisoner in stasis and wants to help him.

I must say I was appalled by Miner’s reason for being a prisoner but at the same time thought it was poetic justice that the chief’s son was the one he saw when he was woken up. Some of the laws in this story horrified me. I couldn’t believe someone could be sentenced to stasis for one thousand years simply for falling in love.

I truly loved this wonderful story. It called to me on a level I was not expecting. I loved the way the story played out bit by bit. Great read.

Once the second-prize winner on My Slave’s Got Talent, Sky Blue has spent the past few years singing at a failing New York nightclub. While Sky has never had control over his fate, his life seems to take a turn for the worse when he’s torn from the familiar comfort of performing and sold to a rich and enigmatic man.

Morgan Wallace takes his newly purchased slave to San Francisco, his intentions unclear. On the one hand, he treats Sky with more kindness than Sky has ever known—treats him like a real person. On the other hand, he shares Sky at parties hosted by his sadistic new friends.

A confused slave is an endangered slave, and Sky isn’t even sure of his master’s real name. Is he Morgan Wallace, wealthy and cruel, or Mackenzie Webster, caring and compassionate? Caught between hope, fear, and an undeniably growing attachment, Sky struggles to untangle which parts are real and which are merely a performance. His future, his heart, and even his life may depend on it.

Review: Kim Fielding writes my favorite kind of books, full of feelings and emotions, with real characters who are not perfect nor do they strive to be. Her books are not as steamy as I’d like and yet the storytelling and the writing make up for the little things that are lacking. Who needs sex in every chapter when they get characters that are real, flawed and so easy to relate to?

Jeremy and Qayin are not young chickens who experiment with love. They’re both in their 40’s and they feel very single one of those years, especially Qayin. Qay is a recovering addict with a closet full of secrets and skeletons. Life has not been kind to him, and the only way he managed to drown his anxiety and depression was by losing himself in a world of booze, drugs and sex. Qay managed to get his life turned around and he’s one of those lucky people who actually learned something from his past mistakes.

Qay’s past still haunts him every single day. But he’s determined to finish college so that he can better himself. I have so much admiration for people who overcome their struggles and this was one of the things I loved the most about Qay. Yet, regardless of his determination, Qay doesn’t think much of himself and he knows he’s not good enough for someone like Jeremy.

Jeremy is a park ranger who’s like a modern version of a super hero: Super-Ranger to the rescue! Jeremy’s childhood was hell. He was bullied and made fun of, his parents were cold and indifferent, and the one person he felt didn’t hate him jumped off a bridge in an effort to kill himself.

When Jeremy got the opportunity to move away to Portland for college, he left and never looked back. Jeremy is all about helping people, especially LGBT homeless teens, and the respect everyone has for him is easy to see. Jeremy has an innate goodness that not many people possess, and that goodness prevents him from turning his back on his drug-addict ex-boyfriend Donny, when he shows up at his door beaten up and bloody.

Jeremy finds himself the target of some nefarious dealers his ex socialized with, while trying to pursue a relationship with Qay and save the world, all at the same time. The plot itself was thriller-like and well done. The relationship between Qay and Jeremy was sweet and full of feelings.

In all honesty I felt like this plot and the relationship between these two didn’t go together very well. I ended up being overwhelmed because Qay’s relapse and his difficulty in accepting Jeremy’s feelings took all my focus and all my heart. The bad guys needed to go, because the last thing I needed to keep up with was Jeremy getting shot and all the craziness that came with that.

This was a great book, I really enjoyed reading it! I am so very excited to read the next one in this series because NEVIN!!!! He was my favorite secondary character, I liked him even more than I liked Rhoda, and she was a kickass woman! Nevin with his filthy mouth and an even filthier personality will probably get his own book and I’m going to love every single page of that bad boy falling in love.

Review: Nicky Hauser has spent the last five years with a man who not only didn’t appreciate him, but cheated on him more than once. When Nicky walks in on his partner, the man he shares his life and home with, banging one of their waiters in his office, Nicky can no longer pretend not to know what Tom is doing. He couch surfs for a while until the opportunity to house sit falls into his lap. The couple is so impressed with how immaculate their home is upon their return, that they start suggesting Nicky to their friends, and Nicky turns it into a solid income from there.

That is all Spencer Cartwright is supposed to be, his employer. But all bets are off when Nicky takes a fulltime, live in job for Spencer, keeping his home in order. Quiet nights spent watching TV together, Spencer helping Nicky study for his college math class and evenings out with Nicky’s friends, slowly turn their friendship into something more. But can Nicky open up his heart to another man after the lost one broke it?

This was just a fast fun read. The storyline was okay, the characters were a little distant though. I never really felt drawn to either of them until toward the end, and then the story was over. I did like how Nicky took his circumstance and turned it to work in his favor, but I really wanted him and Spencer to get together a little sooner and perhaps have a little more romantic time.

Kelly’s narration of the story was great. I liked that each character had a different voice, whether it was tone, pitch or nuance that changed, you always knew who was talking at the time.

If you are looking for something quick to pass an afternoon with a decent storyline and a tease at romance, grab a copy of Housekeeping.

Kim Fielding - Rattlesnake _Final

Rattlesnake

by

Kim Fielding

A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn’t seen in years.

On a quest to deliver the letter, Jimmy travels to Rattlesnake, a small town nestled in the foothills of the California Sierras. The centerpiece of the town is the Rattlesnake Inn, where the bartender is handsome former cowboy Shane Little. Sparks fly, and when Jimmy’s car gives up the ghost, Shane gets him a job as handyman at the inn.

Both within the community of Rattlesnake and in Shane’s arms, Jimmy finds an unaccustomed peace. But it can’t be a lasting thing. The open road continues to call, and surely Shane—a strong, proud man with a painful past and a difficult present—deserves better than a lying vagabond who can’t stay put for long.

Review: The first line has you hooked… It started with a dead man… all the way to the very last line. I couldn’t put it down.

Jimmy Dorset lives on the road. He travels as far as his clunker car will take him, stays until he has enough money to get on the road again. He is never in one place long enough to make a home or life. He feels no one wants him or needs him. Then one day he picks up an old hitchhiker that wants to go to Rattlesnake to try to make amends with his son. When Tom dies Jimmy sees so much in him he decides to deliver Tom’s letter in person to Shane Little.

Shane is a bartender of the Rattlesnake Saloon in his Aunts motel. Shane has his own story though very different from Jimmy’s they are two souls meant for each other.

Jimmy had no idea picking up a lonely, cold hitchhiker would change his life so drastically.

This book gave me chills from opening till I finally finished it (in one sitting). It is such a poignant story. Powerful with some soft undertones and I found it very romantic as well.

I adored both characters. Jimmy the loner–I still loved him and felt so deeply for him. Who couldn’t love Shane? He is the town’s sweetheart. Everyone loves him and is protective of him, even though he isn’t perfect either. I think I loved most the fact these two characters are not perfect in any way. Not looks or personality.

Though Jimmy fights his feelings tooth and nail, sometimes fate is stronger than your own will. I will admit I shed a few tears along the way. This book is in my favorite list of this year as long as Jimmy and Shane.

If you love modern stories set in old-west towns, broken men, some angst, romance, and some moderate, sensual, mansex this is definitely for you.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good M/M romance and something a little different.

Review: For every author there is always some book that is kind of the mental go to. I am not a stranger to Kim Fielding’s writing and for me Astounding! , is the one that has definitely left a lasting (and totally good) impression on me. It is a heck of a lot of fun and is packed with sweet romance to top it all off!

This is not your typical sci-fi, Close Encounters of the Third Kind or ET or Star Trek kind of outing. Instead, just about everything of this story gives off the vibe of a ‘50’s alien story. I think it’s the use of exclamation marks, not only for the title of the book but also for the chapter headings. They create the sense of melodrama and a great setting for the book. Even the cover screams 50’s aliens to me. It’s not often I comment on covers, but I really love this one. It’s fun and almost tells the story on its own.

The story is based around Carter. He is the editor and owner of a struggling print magazine which, due to electronic publishing, is about to publish release the final edition. Carter has devoted many years of his life to the magazine, publishing many amateur writers’ short stories.

Every month Carter receives submissions from one person in particular. The story never really changes, it is just variants on the same theme – an alien went to earth to explore, alien wants to go home but no way to contact his people, leaving the alien lonely. In that final month, Carter sends a rude rejection letter to the author of the badly written story.

This is the main setting which sends us on our own little road trip that in my mind crosses the ‘50’s aliens with X-Files (sort of). John is a charming and naive character. He has normally kept to himself but for something along the lines of a last hurrah, he and Carter join Carter’s friends on an RV trip. The romance between John and Carter is incredibly sweet and simple.

This is such an easy book to read and totally enjoyable.

Highly recommended.
